John Hartenfeld’s Cold Case and His Son’s Long Search for Truth

Send us Fan MailIn August 1996, John Hartenfeld drove into the mountains of northern New Mexico for a solo fly fishing trip and never came home. His Toyota 4-Runner was found two months later on remote ranch land — every fingerprint wiped from the vehicle. His credit card had already been used, four days after he vanished, to buy a small and troubling amount of two-stroke fuel. Private investigators and law enforcement both concluded foul play. No one was ever prosecuted.John's son James Hartenfeld is a Portland comedian who has spent most of his adult life with this unresolved wound. He joins us to talk about the moment as a kid when he searched under beds and in closets hoping his dad was pranking him, about the phone call his dad made to a close friend reporting that someone was messing with his car — days before he disappeared — and about a jaw-dropping development that happened just weeks before this recording: New Mexico cold case investigators found remains in the area where John vanished, and they need James's DNA.James is also building My Little Cold Case, a six-episode documentary series about his father's disappearance. It's a project designed for the families that most cold case content ignores — the ones with no ending, no arrest, no resolution. Croft and Barrow Jane Does Family Speaks About Identification

Send us Fan MailIn November 2008, an electric company crew replacing a power pole in Oklahoma City made a grim discovery — the partial remains of a young woman. She was Native American, estimated to be between 17 and 23 years old, and she had no name. The only clue she left behind was a pair of black Croft & Barrow shoes. For sixteen years, she was known as the Croft & Barrow Jane Doe.Her name was Amy Elizabeth Davis. In this episode, we sit down with Darlene Nixon — Amy's biological cousin — who spent years searching for answers across state lines, fighting through closed adoption records, institutional silence, and a system that looked the other way. Darlene tells us how Oklahoma City police turned Amy's adoptive family away when they tried to file a missing persons report. How the family was told Amy was just a sex worker on the street, and that was that. How Darlene herself finally filed the report in January 2026 — and how just three months later, Amy's brother's DNA confirmed what the family had feared for years.Amy is identified now. But the questions surrounding her death remain open. No cause of death. No suspect. And not a single person from her final years willing to come forward. If you knew Amy Elizabeth Davis — from Oklahoma City, from the Will Rogers Court area, from anywhere — somebody needs to hear from you.To share information, contact the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner at (405) 239-7141 or reach out to us at TheColdCases.com.Support the showEvery Unsolved Case Deserves a Voice.Somewhere right now, a family is waiting for answers. Send us Fan MailIn April 2024, 21-year-old Elizibeth "Lizzy" Green walked out the front door of her home in Callao, Utah — a remote desert community of fewer than 50 people — and was never seen again. And the case has received almost no national attention. In this episode, we sit down with Kale Green, Elizibeth's father, for an exclusive interview. He shares what investigators found — and didn't find — on her devices, why the K-9 units' failure to pick up any scent trail points him toward someone within the community, and why he believes the answers to his daughter's disappearance lie not in the vast surrounding desert, but among the people who were already there. He also shares details that have never been publicly reported — including disturbing events inside the household in the weeks before she vanished, and a comment made to him by someone close to the case that he has never been able to shake. This is a story about a young woman the news largely forgot. Was Jack Morgan Killed by his Dad for Being Gay?

Send us Fan MailIn December 1996, fifteen-year-old Jack Morgan vanished from his San Diego home after an argument with his father. No clothes taken. No money. No note. Nothing.Authorities called it a runaway case. His father called it closed — throwing out every photo, every belonging, forbidding Jack's name from being spoken in the house, blocking his mother and aunt from speaking to police, and personally killing a planned America's Most Wanted broadcast that might have found him.The case file was lost three years later. The investigation shut down for fourteen years. Now, in an exclusive interview, we sit down with Jack's aunt Dawna Holland — the woman who never stopped looking — who tells us what investigators never publicly revealed: that Jack was gay, that his father was a violent Marine who beat his mother, and that she believes Jack was killed because of who he was.His brother knows what happened that afternoon. He's never spoken about it. And the weight of that silence has nearly cost him everything. This is the story of a boy the system failed, a family that refused to forget, and a case that — nearly thirty years later — remains unsolved. If you have information about Jack Duane Morgan, contact the San Diego Police Department at 1-619-531-2000 or the NCMEC at 1-800-843-5678. Douglas "DJ" Shondel II Is a Case That Should've Been Easily Solved

Send us Fan MailIt has been more than two decades since Douglas James Shondel II — known to those who loved him as “DJ” — died under circumstances that his family, and even first responders, found deeply troubling. He was 21 years old. His mother, Pam Scott, has spent every year since searching for answers that have never come.On Sunday, March 11, 2001, DJ was found unresponsive in the bathtub of the apartment he shared with his pregnant girlfriend, at 100 N. 16th Street in Fairfield, Iowa, the shower still running. What followed next is at the heart of why this case has never left the minds of those who knew him.Rather than step next door to use a neighbor’s phone and call 911, the girlfriend walked a block and a half to gather friends, who then returned with her to the apartment — where they allegedly cleaned the area before anyone ever contacted emergency medical services. When first responders did arrive, they reported that things seemed “strangely out-of-place” and that the scene did not line up with the accounts given by the girlfriend and those with her.DJ was rushed to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His cause of death was determined to be a broken neck and head trauma. Despite those findings, his case has languished for over two decades with no charges ever filed, officially classified as undetermined.Support the showEvery Unsolved Case Deserves a Voice.Somewhere right now, a family is waiting for answers. According to her sister, Deanna arrived in a vehicle with two unidentified men. After a brief conversation, Deanna left again in the same car.She was never seen again. For years, the case was labeled a runaway, a classification that prevented the urgency and investigative resources that might have helped locate her sooner. Pacific Atrocities Education Discusses WWII War Crimes in Asia

Send us Fan MailIn this powerful episode, we sit down with Jenny Chan, founder of Pacific Atrocities Education ( https://www.pacificatrocities.org ), to explore the hidden history of Imperial Japan's systematic atrocities during World War II—a chapter largely erased from American consciousness. From the Roosevelt administration's alleged censorship of Japanese war crimes to the horrific experiments of Unit 731, we delve into the uncomfortable truths that have been buried for decades.Jenny reveals how her organization emerged from Chinese-American families determined to share their grandparents' untold stories, and why 26 million lives lost in the Asia-Pacific Theater remain largely forgotten in mainstream historical narratives. We examine the forced labor of millions of Chinese civilians, and the post-war deals that granted immunity to perpetrators in exchange for their research. This conversation challenges everything you thought you knew about WWII, exposing how geopolitical expediency shaped historical memory and why understanding these atrocities matters for contemporary human rights and justice. A must-listen for anyone interested in hidden history, Asian-American studies, or the long shadows cast by war crimes and government cover-ups.Topics Covered:The founding of Pacific Atrocities EducationRoosevelt's WWII censorship controversyUnit 731's biological warfare experimentsThe comfort women system of sexual slaveryChinese forced labor under Imperial Japanese occupationPost-war immunity deals for war criminalsThe ongoing fight for historical justiceSupport the showEvery Unsolved Case Deserves a Voice.Somewhere right now, a family is waiting for answers. Tulsa Race Riots & Rev. Stephenson’s Film

Send us Fan MailIn this powerful and deeply reflective episode, I sit down with Kevin Stephenson, Reverend and President of Faith Based Films LLC, to discuss his upcoming film project, 1921, which explores the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921—one of the most devastating and long-silenced acts of racial violence in American history. Our conversation goes beyond the commonly told narrative of destruction and loss to uncover lesser-known, deeply human stories of compassion, faith, and moral courage. Reverend Stephenson shares insights from a short documentary currently available on his website, highlighting how Catholics and other faith communities stepped in to help protect, shelter, and support victims during and after the riots—stories that complicate history but also restore humanity to it.We discuss why this film matters now, the responsibility of faith-based storytellers to tell hard truths, and the challenges of securing funding for an independent historical film rooted in reconciliation rather than division. This episode is about memory, accountability, and the role faith can play—not as a shield from history, but as a lens to understand it more fully. If you care about untold history, faith-driven storytelling, and preserving the truth of Greenwood and Black Wall Street, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.Support the showEvery Unsolved Case Deserves a Voice.Somewhere right now, a family is waiting for answers.
