We talk about Palestinian storytelling from oral histories that transmit our stories across generations, to policy analysis that explains what is happening to us today in our own voices. In this conversation with Yara Hawari, the co-director of the Palestinian policy network Al-Shabaka, we also discuss which Palestinians are given the chance to speak and the many—sometimes deadly—ways that our acts of self-narration are suppressed and controlled. Actress, director, producer, and screenwriter Cherien Dabis discusses her career, from directing shows like Ramy, Mo, and Only Murders in the Building to writing, directing and acting in her monumental new Palestinian film, All That's Left of You. She reflects on the profound impact of her first trip to Palestine as an eight-year-old, where experiencing harassment and humiliation by Israeli soldiers served as a political awakening that shaped her life and career. She discusses her early life growing up Palestinian in Ohio, her experience with a camcorder as a child, and how the First Gulf War crystallized her decision to become a filmmaker to tell authentic Palestinian stories and challenge the dehumanizing stereotypes in Western media. The conversation dives into the creation of All That's Left of You. She shares the immense emotional and logistical challenges of making the film, particularly during the ongoing genocide, and the surreal experience of recreating historical scenes, and scenes of displacement and military violence that were simultaneously unfolding in the news. Cherien explains the film's focus on the intergenerational impacts of psychological violence, harassment, and humiliation, using the family dynamic across decades to show how the Nakba is a continuing catastrophe. We go back to 1931, when Palestinian journalist Issa El-Issa visited Paris's Colonial Exhibition and discovered Palestinian pavilions had been co-opted by British and Zionist organizers. This experience led the journalist to organize an Arab Exhibition in Palestine in 1933. Historian Nadi Abusaada discusses Resurgent Nahda, a book he recently researched and edited, and takes us through the exhibition of the same name at Dar El-Nimer in Beirut. The discussion covers the key contributors, artworks, and crafts displayed at the exhibition in Mandate Jerusalem, along with its organization and its role in promoting Arab unity. Palestinian doctor, scholar and research fellow Ghada Karmi offers powerful, truthful and hard-hitting words on Palestine's past, present and future. She sheds light on a common experience amongst Palestinian diaspora: that of blocked memories, suppressed as a result of trauma. Dr Salman Abu Sitta was born in 1937 in Ma‘in Abu Sitta, in the Beersheba district of Mandate Palestine. Visualizing Palestine is a data-visualization platform that produces factual infographics and visuals to build a rights-based narrative of Palestine and the Israeli occupation. In this conversation, we explore the different pillars of Visualizing Palestine's work and process and how the project came into being. Through the work, we consider the structural inequality, apartheid and occupation that form the Palestinian reality today.Visualizing Palestine (VP) was established in 2012, and is dedicated to using data and research to visually communicate Palestinian experiences to provoke narrative change. Taking his film "Spaces of Exception" as a starting point, we talk about reservations and refugee camps as uniquely dual spaces that are all at once akin to prisons, yet a territory where it is possible to practice native sovereignty. He points to the very power of Indigineity in calling nationhood into question, the potent transnational solidarity that exists between Native Americans and Palestinians, and why it is possible to be a settler coloniser without a sponsor state. Malek Rasamny is a documentary filmmaker, researcher and writer. He was also one of the first afikra presenters when we first launched. He is the co-founder — along with Matt Peterson — of "The Native and the Refugee" which is a multi-media research project that compares and contrasts the societies and struggles of both Native American reservations and Palestinian refugee camps in the Middle East. "This is not a watermelon" is a podcast about Palestinian history and culture. In this episode, we sat down with Andy Clarno, author of "Neoliberal Apartheid: Palestine/Israel and South Africa after 1994" to understand more about transnational solidarity particularly between South Africa and Palestine. He helped us define apartheid and neoliberalism, sharing what he considers to be a useful working definition of the terms, unpacking their origins, and explaining what systems and realities they actually refer to. We discussed what it takes to dismantle such systems and how essential the Boycott, Divestment and Sanction movement is. Andy sheds light on the decades-strong transnational solidarity between South Africa and Palestine, walks through the steps it took to achieve liberation in South Africa, and considers whether the post-apartheid South African model is what Palestine should be aspiring to. Specifically, she is a cultural and intellectual historian of the 20th century Arab world with a focus on Palestinian history.
