This enchanting account not only details his battle with seasickness and fears of pirates but also captures the breathtaking coastal scenery and the rituals performed to appease the sea gods. Written entirely in kana, the script traditionally used by women, the Tosa Diary is interspersed with the poets reflections and beautiful poems created during the journey.
