Trash Talk Reverse

Welcome to Trash Talk Reverse, where I trash content & topics within the entertainment sphere or I do the reverse. I mostly talk about things I want to see in movies and TV and things I don't, things that exist that I don't like, or things that I love and want more of. I figure since everyone's doing a podcast these days why not get on the mic and share my unsolicited opinions too? The film industry is so influential to society — after all, to quote That 70s Show, Hollywood is the third branch of government. So hopefully I can highlight how the industry can and should serve my own tastes.

    10: Lights, Camera, Live Action!

Hollywood has been obsessed with live action remakes for quite some time, and it doesn't look like the trend is going anywhere any time soon. This episode dives into the trend of live action remakes, and the obsession with live action versions in general, across Disney and other big studios to even the TV screen, and whether there's a right way to repurpose an existing property.(Not that anyone asked, but this was recorded/edited in June and only now released because I was going to edit the video version first but it got delayed so I'm just dropping this now. For context, that's why I don't mention certain recent projects that I will expand on in the companion article to come.)Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

TV 1: Phineas and Ferb: The Full Breakdown

The Phineas and Ferb revival has been out for a month by now, but prior to that, I recorded this in May to explore why the formula of the show not only works but actually induces creativity to keep the show fresh. This episode also dives into the world and characters of the show, the four seasons and special episodes, and some hopes for the revival.TV Episode 1 of the Trash Talk Reverse PodcastJoin the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    9: Reboot, Reuse, Recycle

Hollywood's been announcing new reboots, remakes, sequels, and spin-offs every five seconds, and people have been wondering if the entertainment industry is creatively bankrupt. This episode dives into the mountain of content being made that happens to be based on something else. Anything can be IP, and we'll take a look at everything from Mattel's toy-based content, the Harry Potter reboot, Pixar & animation, TV universes and reboots, public domain adaptations, superheroes, game-based content, horror, other types of franchising, and whether IP-based content is inherently a bad thing.Taking Back Harry Potter: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO43wDZf08kJoin the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

MV 1: Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes came out this month nearly 7 years after the previous installment in the newest Planet of the Apes franchise, and for the most part it did not disappoint. This is a quick rundown of the film: where it excelled, where it needed work, and how the story sets up the rest of the sequel trilogy.Movie Episode 1 of the Trash Talk Reverse PodcastJoin the TTR crew! https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    8: The Dystopia Games

With the recent release of the Hunger Games prequel, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the success of YA Dystopia as a genre has hit another bump in the road. With a thorough discussion of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and Maze Runner series, along with brief discussions of some other dystopian works, we dissect dystopia and try to figure out why the genre with so much potential has produced so few works of quality and so few works overall.P.S. Take a shot every time I mention the point of dystopia as a genre.Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    7: Strike 1, Strike 2

For half the year, two big Hollywood unions went on strike against the major studios to fight for better terms and protections for writers and actors. It was a long back and forth, so what ultimately went down? This, studios, streamers, VFX artists, and more.Life After Pi VFX Documentary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lcB9u-9mVEVariety Article Writer Room Minimumshttps://variety.com/2023/biz/news/writers-strike-screenwriters-oppose-staff-mininum-1235694323/Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    6: The Marvelous Emmys Success(ion)

In honor of the Emmys being moved to January (for now) because of the strike, enjoy this discussion of the recently announced Emmy nominations for the 22-23 TV year. Nominated and discussed shows include The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Succession, Barry, Ted Lasso, The White Lotus, Abbott Elementary, Wednesday, Only Murders in the Building, The Bear, and much (much) more.Note: Literally just realized that Derry season 3 would've qualified for last year's Emmys, not this year's, but the rest of the point still stands.Emmys Ballot PDF: https://www.emmys.com/sites/default/files/ballots/program-2023-v4.pdfJoin the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

5: Barbenheimer & the Directorial Squad

This summer debuted Barbie directed by Greta Gerwig and Oppenheimer directed by Christopher Nolan on the same day, and this created a phenomenon called Barbenheimer that had audiences flocking to see these films and creating massive success for both. Did these movies and their directors really deserve all this hype? Do their fellow critically acclaimed famous directors with specific brands deserve the praise they get? And can we ever stop getting these directors to stop writing when they're not good at it? Find out in the trashiest episode yet.Other discussed directors include Quentin Tarantino, Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Jordan Peele, James Cameron, Tim Burton, M. Night Shyamalan, Wes Anderson, Denis Villeneuve, and Bong Joon-Ho.Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    4: The Strangling Triangle

Introduced in the previous episode, this is a deep dive into the triangle of Hollywood, which consists of critics, creatives, and consumers. We dig into why all three suck most of the time and don't know what they're doing or talking about and how they can stop being dumb so that we can get better movies and shows. Content discussed WITHOUT spoilers or briefly mentioned includes: Boston Strangler, The Princess, Modern Family, Arrested Development, Community, The Crowded Room, Pirates of the Caribbean, Mission Impossible, Strange World, Lady Bird, Marriage Story, Knives Out, The Last Jedi, Prisoners, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Harry Potter. Some of these are great and some of these suck, so find out which is which.P.S. Take a shot every time I say "actually it's so ironic."Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

    3: Killer Swarm

Yet another serial killer show (so original), Swarm (Amazon Prime, from Donald Glover & Janine Nabers) turns a long standing misogynistic stereotype about fans into their villain. According to these guys, female fans of fictional Beyonce are more threatening than literally any other demographic, including rabid violent sports fans and uptight gatekeeping male music fans. Will Hollywood ever get tired of serial killer fiction? Especially garbage ones like this show? Will they ever be done glorifying killers or scapegoating mental illness and mental health? Plus an introduction to the triangle of Hollywood: creatives, critics, and audiences. No spoilers on any of the content discussed or mentioned (Swarm, Dahmer, Once Upon a Time).Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

2: Everything Racial All At The Oscars

The 95th Oscars were held on March 12, 2023 and despite mostly being a snooze fest, it was a big hit for Everything Everywhere All At Once. Coming a whole year after last year's slap fiasco, which no one seemed to be able to let go all night, Jimmy Kimmel hosted a night with some deserved wins as well as some questionable ones. But with a nearly hundred-year history of excluding people of color with very slow progress towards equality, how did this night measure up? And what are some past and present Oscars mistakes that this awards show needs to learn from?No spoilers for any of the nominated films or any other films.Article on history of racial classifications:https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4326670/Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/

1: When YOU Wish Upon A Plot Twist

Interesting concepts meet shark jumping in the latest season (season 4) of Netflix's YOU starring Penn Badgley, which seemed so promising, but then as usual, it took a deep dive off a bridge. Inconsistent characters, eye-roll-worthy plot reveals, and further stigmatization of mental illness all contribute to yet another misadventure for Joe Goldberg. Spoilers for YOU seasons 1-4 and also brief spoiler for Prisoners (2013) but that movie also did a very similar turn where they had plot holes upon plot holes trying to explain its ridiculous reveal so don't watch it.Join the TTR crew at https://trashtalkreverse.com/
