He would happily have relived the Extra Time and penalties too but he had to board a flight at Alicante Airport and he never saw them. This, as we discover, was a bit of a habit with the Gillingham-loving Nick. We also discover how and why he chose Gilingham FC over the glamour of Tottenham, Arsenal and any of the other London Clubs easily in reach from his home town. 

For the Fourth Episode of The Football Rewind, writer and author, Steve McKevitt relives the emotional roller coaster that was the three days in Mid-May 2013 which saw Wigan win the FA Cup and get relegated from the Premier League, making unwanted history in the process. We discover how a Merseyside-born Everton fan ended up supporting one of the least fashionable clubs in professional football and how he saw it transformed into a Premier League resident. We cover everything from the laughable amount of money required to take control of the club to the equally hilarious parade of dross that came through the clubs doors over the following two decades. 

Declan is joined by RTE’s Conor Wilson to pick a winner from the greatest collection of goals ever scored in one calendar month.  Conor outlines some rather novel ways of following the big games, during the early years of Sky Sports, when he had no access to cable TV. We will hear the almost heart-warming tale of the goal that saved Christmas, while Declan will abuse his platform to lobby for Matty Taylor’s 45 yard effort to retroactively be anointed ‘Greatest goal of all time’. 

John Hindhaugh joins Declan Brennan to discuss the all-time classic encounter between Charlton Athletic FC and Sunderland AFC.  John is a Sunderland supporter and very kindly watched the entire game for the first time seeing as he was working on that fateful day back in 1998.  Were Sunderland wearing the wrong shirts? Had Nicky Summerbee really just come from a night club in full kit? What cruel and unusual punishment was imposed on Clive Mendonca once he retired and moved home to Sunderland? All of this and more will be explored as Hindhaugh exorcises some demons and forgets it’s not live.
