How biophilic design improves our mental health with Marcus Jankie

EPISODE1: How biophilic design is creating environments that are good for our mental wellbeing. Up Property General Manager Marcus Jankie discusses in this podcast the detailed work undertaken for the interiors of the new Barwon Health Mental Health Hub in the heart of Geelong's CBD. Biophilic design is at the core of the interiors, creating natural, relaxing spaces for those who work at and use the Hub. Up Property purchased a derelict group of shops in Moorabool Street, Geelong, in 2017, and through collaboration with Barwon Health, and State and local governments, the once eyesore is now a landmark building in the heart of the CBD, servicing the mental health needs of the community. In this podcast, Marcus talks to the research team at Deakin University, architects at Clarke Hopkins Clarke, Geelong State MP, the State Mental Health Minister, and the artist about coming together to design the interiors to create a sense of calmness within the building. A unique aspect of the design at Barwon Health Mental Health Hub was the input from people with lived experience in mental health. In essence, they were the clients, as they would be using the building and its services, and their insights drove much of the design and colour palette. Biophilic design isn't new, but since COVID, the design space has seen an increase in its application earlier in projects, and it now forms part of the sustainability brief on many developments. Up Property is proud of its latest completed project and the entire team who brought it to reality.
