War and Peace (Russian Война и мир, Voyna i mir; in original orthography Война и миръ, Voyna i mir) is a monumental epic by Leo Tolstoy, first published between 1865 and 1869 in Russki Vestnik. This extraordinary novel delves into the intricacies of Russian society during the tumultuous Napoleonic Era. Regarded as one of Tolstoys two major masterpieces—alongside Anna Karenina—its also celebrated as one of the greatest novels in literary history.
