Born in England in 1911 Hardwicke Knight lived in Dunedin from 1957 – 2008. Amongst his vast travels he told the story of having been the official photographer on a Soviet Russian Expedition up Mount Ararat in 1936. On that expedition he claimed not only had they found Noah’s Ark. He had souvenired a piece of its timber! Kiwi perspective to a now forgotten friendly fire incident in WW2. Sinking of the Italian vessel ‘Nino Bixio’ in the Mediterranean August 1942, by British submarine ‘Turbulent’. The ‘Nino Bixio’ and her sister ship Sestriere were  packed with over 6,000 Allied prisoners of war from the North African Campaign. The attack by the Turbulent upon the Nino Bixio resulted in the deaths of 336 Allied prisoners. New Zealand (2nd Division) death toll being 117.  Were those deaths preventable? Is it possible to proportion blame? Let’s look at this from all angles. Footnote: If you had a relative on board either the ‘Nino Bixio’ or ‘Sestriere’ on this ill-fated journey. Today’s episode I recount the horrendous horrors of the shipwrecked ‘Invercauld’ sailors.  In May of 1864 the Scottish vessel ‘Invercauld’ travelling between Melbourne & Peru sailed directly into Auckland Island in the subantarctic Southern Ocean. 19 men made it off the vessel with just the clothes they were standing in. Their struggle to survive in the face of appalling conditions.  The desperate measures they were reduced to on one of the most desolate and isolated places on the planet.  Is an amazing & tragic one. One of Hillary’s forgotten expeditions took place between 1960-61. The Himalayan Scientific & Mountain Expedition. Better known as ‘Silver Hut’ due to the confined cabin the scientists & mountaineers occupied 5,800 metres up a remote Nepalese mountain. The primary goal was to see the long term affect of altitude on human physiology. If acclimatisation could result in climbers reaching the top of mountains without carrying oxygen. The other part of ‘Silver Hut’ was what gripped the public. Funded most of the venture. They would have the go proving or disproving if Yeti existed. In between undertaking human tests, climbing.
