by Wild World of Sport
Have you ever wondered what the wildest sports story of all time is? Could it be Eddie Gaedel, the only person under 4 feet to play Major League Baseball, or Carlos Raposo, the Brazilian scam artist who conned his way onto football teams all over the world. Or maybe Michael O’Brian, the first person to streak at an elite sporting event, or even Margaret Abbot, the United States first Female Olympic Gold Medal Winner who didn’t even know she won. Whatever the answer, we are going to find it... or at least try with the help of our very scientific Wild or Mild board (Patent pending). If you want to find the answer to this question and so many more, join three friends who sit down, crack a couple of beers, and go on a journey to find the wildest story from the world of sport.

Maurice Flitcroft - World's Best Worst Golfer
There is a select group of people who, without any proof, believe that they are better at sport than they actually are. But most of those people don't go as far as todays hero, Maurice Flitcroft. Maurice had the grand idea one day in his mid 40s that he should become a professional golfer, despite never playing the sport before. So without ever playing a round, he entered the British Open, and infamously shot the worst score ever recorded in tournament history, an impressive 121. You might think that was the end of his story, especially after he was banned from all courses in Britain, but this is where the real story begins...So grab your trusty four wood, slap on a fake moustache and concoct the craziest fake name you can and get ready for a story of one of sports greatest games of cat and mouse on our journey to find the wildest story from the world of sport.Sources:https://www.todays-golfer.com/features/player-features/the-story-of-golfer-maurice-flitcroft-phantom-of-the-open/https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12572040/ - The Phantom of the Openhttps://www.4moles.com/golf-world/discussions/how-the-world-s-worst-golfer-gate-crashed-the-openhttps://kids.britannica.com/students/article/British-Open/598833https://www.bbc.com/sport/golf/62121946https://www.globalgolfpost.com/featured/the-besotted-open-journey-of-maurice-flitcroft/https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2008/jul/16/theopen.golf5http://smh.com.au/national/anything-but-par-for-the-course-20070407-gdpuwq.htmlhttps://www.theguardian.com/sport/2008/sep/19/golf.rydercupPresenters;James WhybrowBen WhybrowCarlin SheavesMusic and cover art:Zoe Behrendt

The Death Match - Bread and Bullets
World War II was a dangerous and difficult period of time in Europe, and a time where most professional sports were banned. This included Ukraine, which was occupied by Nazi Germany. However, a group of professional player from Dynamo Kiev and Lokomotiv Kiev formed a team while working at Bread Factory 1.The team, FC Start, gained attention from the Nazis, who set up matches against the team, the most famous a win against a German military team 5-3. The match became a powerful symbol of resistance, leading to legends that players were shot for refusing to throw the game, though historical accounts suggest a more complex mix of fear and propaganda. So prepare your bread starter, open your war rations, and bunker down as we travel back to some of histories darkest days to hear the story of perhaps the worlds bravest football team on our journey to find the wildest story from the world of sport.Sources:youtube.com/watch?si=Uo_2aRoeTAMTwb70&fbclid=IwY2xjawRnuuFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETB3UnBZNm5qMVBVRmJTZVd6c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHhzVGvF6EJ7LrcC4l4a-muBZosMB1cI_O1qCzrwaRj0kwAKbRllZYaLoskPU_aem_zwlF-m2brrIBh9DbyZ2Nng&v=KK9bOt7asYI&feature=youtu.behttps://guides.lib.uconn.edu/ukraine/WWII?fbclid=IwY2xjawRnutFleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETB3UnBZNm5qMVBVRmJTZVd6c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHnBZ0UU8UWO4tBV81EmYJSV6vLyvW4pDNxgLg_jipJV_xJ2pQfYbTerChIqr_aem_MXDZTZMOHdZqFR6h24SOIwhttps://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/24/sports/soccer/a-soccer-match-in-ukraine-during-world-war-ii-echoes-through-time.html?_r=2&fbclid=IwY2xjawRnum9leHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETB3UnBZNm5qMVBVRmJTZVd6c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHnBZ0UU8UWO4tBV81EmYJSV6vLyvW4pDNxgLg_jipJV_xJ2pQfYbTerChIqr_aem_MXDZTZMOHdZqFR6h24SOIwhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Half_(1962_film)?fbclid=IwY2xjawRnuoVleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETB3UnBZNm5qMVBVRmJTZVd6c3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHnBZ0UU8UWO4tBV81EmYJSV6vLyvW4pDNxgLg_jipJV_xJ2pQfYbTerChIqr_aem_MXDZTZMOHdZqFR6h24SOIwPresenters:James Whybrow Carlin SheavesFelix SendenMusic and cover art:Zoe Behrendt

Pigeon Racing - Champions to Castaways
Pigeons are thought of pests, annoyances, and just generally dirty creatures. The affectionate name 'Rat with Wings' may hold true today, but pigeons were once our way of communication, war heroes, and companions. But while that may have gone by the wayside, there is still a collection of people that care for and respect the noble creature, and race them against each other. The racing of pigeons can feature up to 20,000 birds and travel over 11,000km, with some bird even getting lost, never to return. And one pigeon stands above the rest - Armando. A bird that had a transfer fee 10 times that of Neymar, the most expensive football move of all time.So take flight, shit on the heads of the people below you, and try not to get lost as we explore the world of espionage, science, and competitiveness of pigeon racing on our journey to find the wildest story from the world of sport.Sources:Australian Broadcasting Corporationhttps://www.abc.net.auArmando, the 'Lewis Hamilton' of racing pigeons, breaks auction https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30430252/https://www.pipa.be/sites/default/files/d6files/0184018_joel_verschoot_cataloog_en_digitaal_lr.pdfhttps://spotterup.com/operation-tacana-spy-pigeons-of-the-cia/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-49692534https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/War-Pigeons/#:~:text=Some%20of%20the%20pigeons%20who%20received%20the,parachute%20jump%20with%20the%20agent%20carrying%20herhttps://youtu.be/4DkMVCzvgRghttps://www.pattayaoneloftrace.com/enhttps://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/pigeon-racing-china-intlPresenters:James WhybrowBen WhybrowCarlin SheavesMusic and cover art:Zoe Behrendt

There are a few things football fans all take joy in; Spurs getting relegated, Arsenal bottling the league (again0, and Italy not qualifying for the world cup. While the first two are easily explained through the pure 'bottleing' of the North London clubs, but there isn't an explanation to why four time World Champions, and Euro 2020 winners, can't qualify... until today.Carlin has done the research, and found a link between Australia's 'Drunk Socceroos', our golden germination of male players and their heartbreaking loss to Italy in 2006, and a witch doctor in Mozambique... and it actually makes sense. So put on your tin foil hat, cover yourself in chicken blood, and grab your copy of Johnny English Reborn. 1909 NSWRL Final - One v None Me Bruh
Rugby League is one of Australia's most popular sports, but after its debut season in 1908, the sport was financially on it's knees. The sport had one hope of survival... stealing the nations greatest players to improve the quality of its sport. And thats exactly what they did when they poached almost the entire Wallabies squad during an exhibition series between the Kangaroos and Wallabies. But surprisingly, this isn't the most controversial moment from that season. That honour goes to the Premiership Final between South Sydney and Balmain, a match that only one side turned up to play. So strap on your headgear, put in your mouthguard, and drink your own piss, as we go to the very beginning of rugby league, to tell the story of the only first grade final to be played by only one team. This is a story that involves underhanded deals, war effort funding, and the biggest double cross in Australian sport history, and of course a ranking on our wild and mild board to find the wildest story in the world of sport. 1988 Jamaican Bobsled Team - A Crash Course in Sledding
The 1988 Winter Olympics featured one of sports greatest ever underdog stories - the infamous Jamaican bobsled team. The magic of the tropical country competing at the winter games for the first time captured the world’s attention thanks in no small part to the Disney movie Cool Runnings. However, the movie is almost 100% false, with the films director noting that only “1% of the film is true” - the real story is so much wilder. So feel the rhythm, feel the ride, strap on your headphones, it’s wild world time. Steven Bradbury - Slip, Slop, Slap on a Medal
Australia has a famous saying for when someone has unlikely or unusual success - doing a Bradbury. The term comes from Steven Bradbury who became the first Australian to win a Winter Olympic Gold Medal when the four other racers ahead of him slipped over on the final lap, allowing him to glide over the line and into the history books. But Stevens story is so much more than some final turn luck, one that involves multiple near death experiences, the original Project Mbappe, and the deadliness of competitive speed skating. One of Australia's national sporting icons is the perfect place to start season 2, and ties in perfectly to the beginning of the 2026 Winter Olympics. So sit back, relax, and glide into our season 2 debut ffor the same wild antics you know and love from your three hosts on their journey to find the wildest story from the world of sport. Cynisca of Sparta - Shattering the glass Hippodrome
Cynisca, princess of Sparta was born in the late 5th century BCE and lived into the 4th century BCE. Cynisca is famous for holding the prestigious title of being the first woman to win an Olympic event in history - during a period when women were not allowed to compete or even spectate the event, under punishment of death. She accomplished this by exploiting a loophole in the rules, and her victories paved the way for other women to be able to compete in the Olympics for the first time in hundreds of years. So sit back and enjoy a dive down the ancient Olympics rabbit hole featuring a debate on partridges in pear trees, a dodgy microphone, and three men interrupting a women - who happens to be the only qualified person on a show trying to find the wildest story from the world of sport.Sources:https://www.olympics.com/en/news/five-historic-firsts-for-female-olympianshttps://www.olympics.com/en/news/12-july-1912-fanny-durack-becomes-the-first-female-olympic-swimming-championhttps://www.jstor.org/stable/43610326https://www.thoughtco.com/women-at-the-olympic-games-120123https://www.olympics.com/ioc/ancient-olympic-games/spectatorsWomen in Ancient Greece - World History EncyclopediaSpartan Women - World History EncyclopediaCollections: This. Roberta 'Bobbi’ Gibbs - Girl Boss-ton Marathon
The Boston Marathon is one of oldest and most prestigious races in the world. But from its inception in 1897 to 1972, women were not permitted to race due to barbaric and downright ludicrous medical theories on what a woman’s body could handle. However, those rules did not stop a few brave women who dared to race anyway, breaking the mould and showing race organisers and the world that women can run. These women’s names are Roberta ‘Bobbi’ Gibbs, who unofficially raced in 1966, Katherine Switzer, who officially raced in 1967, and Nina Kuscsik, who was the inaugural winner of the 1972 Women’s category.Lace up your shoes, meet us at the start line, and if you’re wearing an Uncle Sam outfit make sure you steer clear of Jock as we unpack the stories of these pioneers and their impact on Marathon running.Sources:https://web.archive.org/web/20150508010414/http://www.distancerunning.com/inductees/1999/kuscsik.htmlhttps://www.runnersworld.com/races-places/a61808909/best-womens-marathon-moments/https://www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/sports/nina-kuscsik-dead.htmlhttps://kathrineswitzer.com/2017/04/marathon-struggle-of-runner-who-changed-athletics/ (picture of Kathrine)https://www.bbc.com/sport/athletics/66615089https://www.aausports.org/https://www.baa.org/races/boston-marathon/history/https://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/18/sports/will-cloney-91-dies-put-boston-marathon-on-the-map.htmlhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1896_Summer_Olympicshttps://www.statista.com/statistics/1090581/olympics-number-athletes-by-gender-since-1896/?srsltid=AfmBOorm4_gM4P74wCS1SrnR-dpDQg6SyynIPAo7y2DCQc6InIu5rJZDPresenters:James WhybrowBen WhybrowCarlin SheavesMusic and cover art:Zoe Behrendt

These events are discussed in the historical context of the story and the actions, views, and treatment toward these animals are not condoned by Wild World of Sport. It’s no secret that during the 19th century people did some awful things to animals in the name of entertainment. ABOUT THIS SHOW
Have you ever wondered what the wildest sports story of all time is?
