Episode 4 - Margaret Skinnider
Margaret was a queer teacher, sniper, rebel, and union organizer. Like Constance Markievicz, she wasn’t interested in maintaining social norms or meeting social expectations. During Easter Rising, she broke social norms by frequently dressing in a masculine fashion and by serving as a sniper. After Easter Rising, she continued to support the IRA and the anti-treaty IRA in a militant capacity and went on hunger strike three times while serving a prison sentence during the Irish Civil War. After the war, she moved in with her partner, Nora O’Keefe and remained dedicated to trade union activism for the rest of her life. Episode 3 - Hanna Sheehy Skeffington
Hanna Sheehy Skeffington is the perfect example of a badass rebel. She was a suffragette, feminist, and Irish Nationalist. She had an indomitable spirit who refused to back down after the British murdered her husband and then tried to buy her silence. When that didn’t work, they tried to intimidate her and the one British officer willing to tell the truth. Instead of being intimidated, she went on a tour in the United States, speaking about the murder of her husband and the many abuses the Irish experienced at the hands of the British. She raised her son on her own and continued to fight for Ireland’s freedom and women’s rights up to the day of her death. Episode 1 - Constance Markievicz
Happy Women's History Month! In Women Resisting Empire's first ever episode, I'll be discussing Irish Rebel Constance Markievicz. Constance Markievicz is one of those legends from the fight for Irish Independence that seems bigger than life. She was born into an Anglo-Irish landowning family and, by all accounts, she should have ended up a Unionist married to some English soldier or lord. Instead, she turned into a bohemian artist, socialist, suffragist, officer in the Irish Citizen Army, the first woman to win a seat in British Parliament, the only woman in De Valera’s cabinet, and Irish Republican married to a Polish Count. Learn how she fought for Irish Independence and resisted the Anglo-Irish Treaty.Theme song: Arabesque Op.61 by Cécile-ChaminadeTranscriptSupport this podcast by joining my PatreonJoin my newsletter and stay up to date on all my projectsFollow me on InstagramFollow me on BlueskyVisit my website
