Learning/Liking/Wanting: Come As You Are Chapter 3
The most important sex organ is...the brain!! Even so, Amy & Tommy can't help but start with the clitoris and the fact that it's been largely ignored until the 90s. The NINETEEN NINETIES. Soon enough they move on to Chapter 3 of Emily Nagoski's Come As You Are, the author-described "nerdy chapter," chock full of brain science. Don't worry, Amy & Tommy find several reasons turn up the spice level, including examining their own contexts for positive sexual experiences!Mentioned in this Episode:The Female Edge by Sara Szal, MD"The Female Body Was Not Designed for the Sex Most Women Are Having After 35" by Sara Szal, MDInside Out Inside Out 2Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski, Ph.D.The Lord of the Rings, by J. Lemons & Little Jackets & Other Turn-Ons: Come As You Are Chapter 2
Amy & Tommy begin to connect the dots: have our favorite stories from childhood and teenhood shaped our romantic and sexual selves? Emily Nagoski explains as much in Chapter 2 of Come As You Are. Nagoski first blows the mind with the explanation of the dual-control model: we've all got sexual accelerators and sexual brakes. And not all of us are Lamborghinis! But then, there's CONTEXT. Nagoski is a terrific tease and the anticipation for Chapter 3 is PALPABLE!Mentioned in this Episode:First Love by Gay HeadCome As You Are by Emily Nagoski, Ph. Body or Soul?: Introduction to Come As You Are
What IS our human-ness? Is it the SOUL? Or is it the BODY? What is it that reminds us that we aren't supercomputers and that AI-generated bots aren't human? Amy & Tommy dig into that question as they open up Emily Nagoski's Come As You Are for in-depth discussion. Amy confuses the beloved San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen with an artist at the paper, Warren Goodrich. No matter. An AI Threesome: Season 3 Premiere!
Welcome to Season 3 of Work From Bed Friday! Inspired by the feminist podcasting duo Amanda Montei and Tracy Clark-Flory of Dire Straights, Amy & Tommy try an AI experiment—in the name of research, of course. I Love Dick: The Book, The Series
Closing in on the end of Season 2, Amy & Tommy discuss I Love Dick, the 1997 cult feminist classic by Chris Kraus. Lucky for them, the book was made into a fabulous television series in 2016. They discuss both of these works, digging into themes of art, desire, femininity, the patriarchy. Love Heals. So Does Dance: All About Love Chapter 12
Intending to start the episode with a discussion of Esther Perel's AI therapy session, Amy & Tommy soon realize that it's a can of worms that need to be opened at a later date! Instead, they remember a favorite podcast episode and the birth of their crowdsourcing efforts: Does Size Matter? Then, it's on to Chapter 12 of All About Love by bell hooks and a discussion of healing and redemptive love but Amy and Tommy veer off into questions of faith, interdependency, the senses, and of course, hope.Mentioned in this Episode:Where Should We Begin? with Esther Perel: My AI Loves Me Better Than Anyone Ever CouldDire Straits: We Got AI BoyfriendsDoes Size Matter? All About Love by bell hooksIs a River Alive? by Robert MacFarlaneAlcoholics AnonymousNeuroscientist Explains How to Manifest without the WooWooVipassana MeditationVineland by Thomas PynchonOne Battle After AnotherContact Improv DanceSend us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff! Finally Free Love: Heated Rivalry Season 1 Finale
Amy & Tommy's scrappy DIY podcast production catches up with them—this was the first episode in which they desperately needed an intern! At least to remind them of last episode's "cornerstones of romantic love." But do not fear! Here are all FOUR cornerstones of romantic love that have emerged over the last two episodes:Talk talk talking. Keep the channel OPEN.Treat the relationship as a third thing.Authenticity. What are the secrets to enduring romantic love? Amy & Tommy look for guidance from bell hooks in Chapter 10 of All About Love, but find little there. Heated Rivalry Episode 5: It's All About LOVE
Amy & Tommy had waaaaay too much to say about Episode 5 of Heated Rivalry. So much, in fact, that they had to make this monster episode into two parts: this episode focuses on Heated Rivalry (typically just the weekly Titillating Tidbit) and their discussion Chapter 10 of All About Love will drop as a separate episode next week. In the meantime, they giddily discuss the romance, the love, the coming out of the penultimate episode of Season 1 of Heated Rivalry.Heated RivalryGus Kenworthy in the New Yorker Gus Kenworthy Wikipedia"Good Medicine" by Sheila Heti Mechanical ElvesStonewall UprisingOriginal Music:Song: How Does One Point to Everything?Artist: Rick Real and The WarmthAlbum: USA #1Send us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff! Amy & Tommy's obsession with Ilya & Shane may be overshadowing their deep dive into All About Love by bell hooks. But they push on, overlaying this seminal text over the cultural reality of 2026. Deep Thoughts and Hot Hockey: All About Love Chapter 8 and Heated Rivalry Episode 3
Who knew that watching hot hockey romances in Heated Rivalry would be a fitting companion for Chapter 8 of All About Love by bell hooks?? So many parallels! Also, some welcome spice for the deep dives into love and community. Amy & Tommy discuss the cultural primacy of the nuclear family and its erosion of our ability to love. It's not as contradictory as it seems: we place so much importance on finding and keeping romantic love, often at the expense of the community and friendships where we practice, learn, teach, and spread love. A Love Ethic: All About Love Chapter 6 and Heated Rivalry Episode 1
As our country navigates this this very difficult moment, the words of bell hooks resonate in their prescience. She understood the road that we were, and are traveling. Amy and Tommy dig into Chapter 2 of All About Love by bell hooks, following her discourse on justice and advocacy for the rights of children. It seems far from a theory of love, but perhaps that's the point. Love and Cathexis: Chapter 1 of All About Love
It turns out that Chapter 1 of All About Love by bell hooks brings up more questions than it answers: what actually IS cathexis? Do you have to have cathexis before you have/practice love? Season 1 Finale: Review of "More: A Memoir of Open Marriage"
Amy & Tommy close out the premiere season of Work From Bed Friday with a review of "More: A Memoir of Open Marriage" by Molly Roden Winter. They disagree about Winter's motives, wonder about how on earth people have time for polyamory, and discuss the the cringe moments that pepper the whole book. Made, Found, Favor: Our Epic Anti-Consumerism Gifting Tradition
A long lost Brady Bunch episode inspired a gifting tradition in the Borffmann household that has been going strong for 20 years! Instead of purchasing gifts for Christmas, Amy and Tommy and their two daughters exchange only three types of gifts: homemade items, found items,, and favors/acts of service. Not only does the tradition short-circuit the consumerism frenzy that typically dominates the season, but it centers creativity, joy, and magic. In this episode, they trace the roots of the tradition and recount stories of memorable gifts, while providing inspiration and tips for anyone looking for a new way to gift! Just in case you want to actually purchase a gift for someone you love, here are a list of books that have been mentioned this season! For the peri-menopausal set. Does Size Matter?
Amy and Tommy take on the age old question with their unique blend of honest conversation, questionable knowledge, reckless internet research, and a component new to them both: crowdsourcing! The discussion is spicy and thought-provoking. They don't uncover the answer to the question, but find that there are many possible answers. Perhaps as many answers as there are sizes of penises. Your Friends & Neighbors
After bingeing Season 1 of Your Friends and Neighbors on the plane home from Rome, Amy & Tommy dive into analysis. Does extreme wealth change the story of marriage, sex, and connection? Is repressed rage the common denominator for all of us? Why does Jon Hamm look so good in a suit? Also: watching raw and vigorous sex scenes on a personal airplane screen seems transgressive in itself. But when you're sucked in, it's hard to stop. Live from Rome
Coming off of Miranda July's All Fours, Amy & Tommy record the first of a few season-ending bonus episodes...from Rome! It's a honeymoon that patiently waited 21 years to happen. In 2004, en route to a 5-week drive through the Sahara desert, the newlyweds were to use their gifted "buddy passes" (standby airline tickets from airlines employees) to first spend a more honeymoon-ish couple of days in Paris before heading off to a gritty and arduous overland adventure. Needless to say, they did NOT make it to Paris that time (and barely made it to Europe to launch their full trip). Fast forward to 2025, where they pivot the plan to a decidedly sexier visit to Rome. Good stories and a few decent travel tips!Mentioned in this episode:Nighttime tour of the ColosseumThe HypogeumFontana di TreviPiazza NavonaPorta Portese MarketNo Jet Lag PillsImmunity Booster PackOriginal Music:Song: Peel with the ColoursArtist: Rick Real and The WarmthAlbum: Coach BarbarianSend us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff! Benson Boone Should Play Davey: All Fours Chapters 29 and 30
Amy and Tommy finish their in-depth analysis of Miranda July’s All Fours. They discuss the final chapters, about which they have a lot of feelings. Aren’t we all over Davey by now? But maybe if Benson Boone played him in the movie….Were these two chapters written after the fact to appease an editor who needed more closure? Or perhaps if was an attempt to distance the story from Miranda July’s actual life? Whatever the reason, a labyrinth and a crystal and two spirit guides would have been okay, but taking us to a non-sensical dance performance and bathing Brooklyn in golden light? Puh-lease. No matter, Amy & Tommy celebrate the conclusion before heading off to Rome, where they will record the next episode of WFBF! In addition, they plan to do a couple of one-offs (single episodes on books or topics of interest) to complete Season 1, then begin Season 2: an in depth analysis of All About Love by bell hooks.Mentioned in this episode: All Fours by Miranda JulyEpley maneuverLabyrinthitisBenson BooneAll About Love: New Visions by bell hooksSculptureLA at the SFMOMAMuistardeaux CollectiveOriginal Music:Song: Coach BarbarianArtist: Rick Real and The WarmthAlbum: Coach BarbarianSend us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff! On Hands and Knees: All Fours Chapter 28
Recording their first episode from their new bedroom in their very old (1896) new house, Amy and Tommy determine that Chapter 28 of Miranda July's All Fours should be the final chapter in the book. End it HERE. But the actual editors of the book disagree. They leave them to their fantasies of ending up where they started, but brand new in that same place. The repetition of days, like the repeating line in the blues, become more and more profound. Amy and Tommy discuss everything from superstars to doggy style. It's a pretty good band name, amiright?? It's also a composite of Chapter 25 of Miranda July's All Fours, at least according to these two intrepid podcasters. Amy & Tommy use the chapter as a jumping off point for a discussion about the staying power of monogamy, the way that jealousy can act like gasoline on the spark of desire, and the non-primacy of marriage.Did Miranda July use numerology at all for her book? Is it an open marriage? Or co-habitation with girlfriends? Amy & Tommy discuss Chapter 24 of Miranda July's All Fours wherein kissing is invented and orgasms are water creatures. There's more, of course: how preparing for a first date is good advice for long term relationships, the way in which a flash of attraction that melts away should be available to all of us, and the pressure of "I love you" even when it's spoken by a journeying soul. Amy & Tommy record this episode from the basement of their new house, Beatrice. Even in the middle of a major move, the two come together to discuss Chapter 23 of Miranda July's All Fours, touching on the subjects of vaginal dryness, third things, and polyamory. They know nothing about polyamory, but that does not stop them from discussing it, and also the lack of human predisposition to monogamy. Although for some, it may be a pre-installed program. Join Tommy & Amy as they stumble into the house of mirrors created by the shifting identities of Chapter 22 of Miranda July's All Fours. They explore the new terrain created inside a spontaneous few days of role playing between our main character and her husband. Can we be more honest inside fiction then we can in real life? And does that honesty mean that real constructs (like marriage) can dissolve inside of that fiction AND in reality? It's a BIG chapter, full of so many opportunities for real discussion about connection inside of and outside of marriage. Is it makeup sex or something much much more profound? What Do You Want? - All Fours Chapter 20
Chapter 20 of Miranda July’s All Fours is one of Tommy and Amy’s favorites. Our character invites her friends to Excelsior’s Room 321 in order to crowdsource marital advice and a whole lot more. But once there, the room expands into another dimension and a new portal seems to open, a place where one can begin to understand oneself and one’s own desires via the sharing of others. Through it all is the titillating question: “If you could have anything or do anything that would not jeopardize your relationship in any way, what would it be?”Hidden parts, secret yearnings, long distance, and much more pepper the conversation that connects the marital argument of Chapter 19 with the possibilities spring forth in Chapter 20. Rock Bottom with Your Pants Down: Chapter 19
True to form, Tommy & Amy "very thoroughly" examine Chapter 19 of Miranda July's All Fours. In the aftermath of a marital fissure, our character moves through her days in a haze of formality, cupcakes, and bones to chew on. All of which allow our fearless hosts to explore their past marriage tensions, typically beginning with a tiny pea, twenty mattresses down. This chapter seems to mark our character's "rock bottom"—she even compares herself to an alcoholic and just one drink. Chapter 18 of Miranda July's All Fours is barely three pages in total. It only takes eight minutes to listen to it on audio. Tommy and Amy, however, do not let that stop them from talk talk talking for so long about rage, intercourse as a disappointing end game, and centering pleasure. They dig deep into the anatomy of a marital argument and hit on a profound distinction: working on your relationship vs. practicing loving. Now officially experiencing perimenopause, we follow her faulty reasoning as she concludes that her newfound libido may soon disappear along with her estrogen—she, and all women, will eventually fall off of a cliff. Or so she thinks.Amy confirms that not all medical providers are as evolved as Dr. Mendoza and the two hosts consider that any prescription for perimenopause should include a rumspringa, as Mary suggests. I Need Him to Jizz Thinking About My Ass! - All Fours Chapter 13
Amy delivers that line with so much enthusiasm (and only flubbing one word) that it's as if she's hoping it will be considered as her audition for the next incarnation of the audio book. Or the Starz series?? One can dream...In Chapter 13 of Miranda July's All Fours, our increasingly unhinged heroine pleads menopause, finally agrees to adopt a puppy, and witnesses the moment that her desperate attempt to connect with her lover comes full circle—and lands under her linden tree. Amy & Tommy discuss big life change, jealousy, masturbatory cleaning, trad wives, and more.Original Music:Song: TomsomArtist: Muistardeaux CollectiveAlbum: Face the MusicReferences in this Episode:All Fours by Miranda JulyStasia's Style SchoolEster Perel interviews Miranda JulyMiranda July's SubstackStarz acquires the rights to develop All Fours Ballerina FarmThe Rise and Fall of the Trad WifeSend us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff! Darkness, Heartbreak, and the Dangers of Black Spray Paint: All Fours Chapter 12
Oh, heartbreak. You are so maddeningly universal. The sick feeling. The roboticism. The detachment from reality. As our character re-enters her domestic life, heartbreak haunts her. She lives the image from the beginning of the chapter: a frozen soul, in her basement, between a trampoline and a couple of suitcases. Amy & Tommy examine the bleakness of this chapter, but not without cackles of laughter and memories of their own heartbreak and miscommunication. Amy vouches for the healing power of young pilots in Singapore and Tommy recounts the slow response to his marriage proposal via accordion song. The unsung power of both fax machines and engagement rings are discussed. It's all in episode #13 of Work From Bed Friday!References in the Episode:All Fours by Miranda JulyThe Wendy Award by Walter ScottPat Jackson with Paul Michael ThorpeThe Legacy of Pat Jackson's American DanceOriginal Music:Song: I Almost Got Hen Hunched on the BusArtist: Rick Real and The WarmthAlbum: FM PerspectiveSend us Fan MailDon't miss the good stuff!
