    26. 1900-1930 WOMEN'S LIVES IN COLLISION

Between 1900 and 1930, the world was at war. Between the Russo-Japanese War and World War I, every part of the world was affected. Women at home or on the front played a vital role in fighting for peace, sustaining the war effort, and rebuilding. For women in Russia, the wars resulted in a revolution that promised much and gave them little. In Turkey, the war brought reforms that forced modernization of women's lives at a surface level. World War I was a catalyst for profound changes for women, but these were slow to materialize. Women also had union labor strikes, and protests for voting rights, signifying the beginning of cultural and societal shifts in regards to women's place in society. 19. 1450-1600 WOMEN AND THE REFORMATION

The Reformation was a time of great change in Europe for both men and women. While men were at the forefront of change, many women also held positions of power and were influential in the changes taking place during this period. While some women were well-respected, respect was difficult to earn and maintain. Women were often persecuted for speaking out. Needless to say, it was not an easy time to be a woman. Before the arrival of European explorers, the people living in Mesoamerica, Oceania, and Africa had rich cultures and empires with their own gendered dynamics and attitudes.  Find the bibliography, transcript. and learning materials that support this episode at: https://www.remedialherstory.com/17-1000-1600-new-worlds.html#/ Support this work at: https://www.remedialherstory.com/giving.html#/ Shop the RHP Store at https://www.remedialherstory.com/store  Host: Jacqui Nelson Editor: Tyler Cardwell Producer: Haley Brook Contributing Authors: Kelsie Brook Eckert, Dr. Nancy Locklin-Sofer, Chloe Gardner, Dr. Pamela Scully, Jacqui Nelson, Maura McCreight, Caroline Taylor, and Rachel Perez. 10. 100-500 WOMEN TRAVELERS AND MERCHANTS ON THE SILK ROADS

The Silk Roads connected people, spread ideas, religions, and commerce, and created empires for those able to control the roads. Women were integral to every aspect of the Roads. Women served as primary producers of crucial items sold and transported along the roads, not withstanding their name sake: Silk. Women literally made it! Women were also sold as brides along the roads to help establish peace between governments. 9. 0CE: ONE MALE GOD OVER WOMEN

Monotheism was a liberating and uniting force in most of the western world. This section explores Judaism and Christianity and what they said about women, as well as explores the lives of the founders and the women who are all over those origin stories. As we are focusing on the impact of these faiths on women's status, this section can seem a bit critical, but remember the social experiences of women in faith are different from their spiritual ones, and despite some of the ways women may have been discriminated against, women from all walks of life flocked toward monotheism.  Find the bibliography, transcript. and learning materials that support this episode at: https://www.remedialherstory.com/9-0-ce-monotheism.html#/ Support this work at: https://www.remedialherstory.com/giving.html#/ Shop the RHP Store at https://www.remedialherstory.com/store  Host: Jacqui Nelson Editor: Tyler Cardwell Producer: Haley Brook Contributing Authors: Kelsie Brook Eckert, Dr. Nancy Locklin-Sofer, Chloe Gardner, Dr. Pamela Scully, Jacqui Nelson, Maura McCreight, Caroline Taylor, and Rachel Perez. 7. 100 BCE - 100 CE WOMEN AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE

Roman history includes many powerful and fascinating women such as. Cleopatra, who helped to define Roman history through her relationships with Roman leaders. The wives of Roman leaders, such as Octavia and Scribonia, as well as their daughters, also played prominent roles in the Empire’s history. Women close to the emperor could manipulate him. Cleopatra was not the only ancient woman to take on male Roman rulers. Women also fought Roman expansion. Boudicca, Zenobia, and Kandake were strong women who opposed Rome. They led powerful anti-imperial forces. Both inside and outside of Rome, women played politics, fought, and led. 6. 800-300 BCE ASIAN PHILOSOPHIES AND WOMEN’S PLACE

In Asia, three religious philosophies emerged that would define human lives for millennia to come: Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. What do these philosophies have to say about women, and what roles did women play in their founding? This varied from faith to faith, although women feel a bit like an afterthought in each. But women are all over the founding stories and traditions. 5. 800-400 BCE EUROPEAN FOUNDING MYTHS AND WOMEN’S PLACE

Ancient Rome and Greece established gender norms that would last millennia in the western world. These norms diminished women's rights and subjugated them to the domestic sphere. And yet, there was nuance and differences across the early western world. Trigger Warning: for discussion of sexual assault and rape. 4. 4000-1000 BCE WOMEN IN THE FIRST CITY STATES

Emerging hierarchies in the city states changed women's roles forever, but not all city states were the same. Some gave women greater social respect as others. It's important to dive into these nuances and the roles that women DID play in the city states. 3. 10,000 BCE THE AGRICULTURAL REVOLUTION: A GREAT MISTAKE?

The Agricultural Revolution allowed humanity to evolve from hunter gather societies to societies capable of building advanced and enormous civilizations, but did we lose more than we gained? Maybe. Women became slaves to the grind stone, health declined, and hierarchies established gender norms that lasted millennia. Birth rates improved, surpluses of food, and everything considered modern evolved from the agricultural revolution. Weighing it all-- it's hard to say whether this was revolutionary for women. 1. T0 15,000 BEFORE GENDERED CONSTRUCTS

Paleo-anthropologists can track human evolution and migration in prehistory by using the remains of women. Such findings have provided some of the most important breakthroughs in our understanding of the past. Humans emerged as hunters and gatherers, and a specific gender dynamic evolved as groups learned to survive. However, there is a debate about whether in fact we can “see gender” in the archeological record and whether gender attribution is helpful for understanding gender relations in pre-history.
