Challenges of the 3D Print Market
Contemplating the many challenges of the 3D print design market, such as trying to appeal to a market that doesn’t even know 3D printing exists yet, or that they need or want 3D printed products. Can You Capture Other Parts in Your 3D Prints?
It’s Tech Tuesday, and today’s question is, “Is it possible to make a 3D print where you print part of it and put some other object of a different material into the middle of your print and keep printing over it? So you encapsulate it or capture something in your 3D print.” It brings up a lot of points of whether or not that part could be damaged or how it fits in there. or if you’re going to hurt your 3D printer if you do it. Educational Project: Digital Sundial
In this WTFFF?! Episode, Tom and Tracy have found a great educational project for teachers and students. There is a lot of potential here for creating it into a larger lesson plan about time, geography, and of course 3D printing and 3D design. What they are talking about is creating a digital sundial, a little ironic considering sundials are analog by nature. Why Does My Recurring 3D Print Suddenly Change?
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom & Tracy answer a technical and practical question from a listener who prints the same type of objects over and over again. The question is: Why does a part that I have printed regularly and successfully over a long period of time all of a sudden have problems when I go and print it? That always surprises me. We’ll get a print off the printer, and there are gaps and holes and things. But we just printed this, and everything seems to be working, but all of a sudden there is a problem. Theoretically, he can play, but he will probably be in quite a bit of pain even though it was about two weeks ago. It’s still not healed yet; that takes a while. How to Improve Your 3D Prints
In this episode of WTFFF?! Tracy asks Tom a question about how to improve the quality of a 3D print. What is the attack process? It starts with defining what improvement is to you. Is it just speed because it is taking too long to print? Or is it quality of the surface smoothness and things like that? Is it having it come off the build plate and it’s done? Meaning you don’t have to clean anything up. The Netflix Of On Demand 3D Printing with Hector Berrebi of 3DShook

This is actual designers who are making a living at it, who are being paid to create exclusive content for 3DShook to distribute. And that’s really impressive. Valentines Day Suggestions
In this WTFFF?! episode, Tracy Asks Tom a question: “What are you going to print me for Valentine’s Day?” The reality is, it does take a long time to create and then model and test and print something new. Food 3D Printing
Food 3D Printing has come from a couple of times from listeners over social media asking us about the sugar printers and the chocolate printers. I promised we would follow up because I really want one. Of course, we went to CES at the beginning of this month, and there was quite a significant display of the food 3D printers at the 3D Systems booth. It’s the second year in a row; they had it last year, and they had it again this year. But there have been some developments, and even XYZ has a printer that does cookies. My point is there is more than just 3D Systems. Other people are working on it and experimenting with it, and we are hoping a good desktop sugar printer comes out soon because I know our daughter would be all over that. After yesterday’s interview with Aniwaa and learning about how many printers, scanners, and software they have in their database as it exists today—926 3D printers alone—our minds are blown. We feel like we are having 3D printer overload right now. Every week on Kickstarter or in the media, there is another press release or announcement about a new 3D printer in the market. We saw a few at CES that are start-ups that will be coming in the market shortly, and they’re probably not even in the database yet because most don’t have full websites yet. That’s really the thing that struck us yesterday. How does anybody keep track of this and sort it all out? Martin Lansard and Pierre-Antoine Arrighi of Aniwaa
In This WTFFF?! episode Tom & Tracy have an interview from across the pond over in France with two business partners and co-founders of a website called Aniwaa.com. They are Martin Lansardand Pierre-Antoine Arrighi. Aniwaa started out as a blog with product comp charts, which were awesome, because they would compare features between multiple printers, five or six of them at a time. Then there was a quick-sort as well. We thought it was a really useful tool, and have used it many times. Now they have launched a whole new website that is trying to be a major resource for anybody looking at the 3D printing ecosystem of printers, scanners, and software. These guys are really product-knowledgeable and product-agnostic, as we like to call them; they are not tied to one product. It’s not a website from a product company pretending to be independent. They really are independent. To send us a message, go to 3dstartpoint.com or wtfffpodcast.com or shoot us a message at [email protected] or on our facebook or twitter! Consumer vs. Prosumer
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss if the future market for 3D printing more consumer or prosumer? This question is coming up because of 3D Systems’ decision to abandon the consumer market, not sell the Cube 3D Printer, and go back to their roots of industrial 3D printing and the prosumer market in general. The prosumer may be the closest to the consumer market they are going to get because they are staying more commercial, their comfort zone of where they have been, but they are recognizing the prosumer market is something they need to serve. 3D Designs For Sale
A lot of people have asked us over recent months: “Can we buy your tie? Is it for sale? Where can we buy your 3D-printed tie?” In this WTFFF?! episode we discuss the options we considered for where to sell it, and reveal that it is finally for sale. We gave a lot of thought about where to sell it, and at one point, Amazon had a 3D-printed product store. We were very excited about that, and we got accepted into it. But then they disbanded it promptly before we were able to get our product over there. And they made it such a headache that we eventually gave up on them. It just didn’t make sense, and it became much harder to create a listing on Amazon within the category. What we found actually was an easier path for making it available for people to buy that is lower maintenance for us as merchants, the answer for us was Etsy. Big Show vs. Little Show
We have had some questions from listeners about some of the events happening locally and internationally. In this episode of WTFFF?! Tom & Tracy discuss the biggest question, which events are better to attend and participate in: Big show or little show? The problem is, it’s like a big fish, little pond, little fish, big pond kind of situation. It really depends on your goals. Doesn’t it depend on whether you are an attendee or an exhibitor? Planning A Killer 3D Printing Event with Colton Robtoy of CD Printathlon
Last August we interviewed Colton Robtoy as he wasplanning the CD Printathlon. CD is the Capital District, which is the Albany,NY area. We were talking to him about the challenges of planning this Printathlon. He was trying to get the word out about it, and that is why he came on ourpodcast. Very recently we noticed that he had written some recap blogposts in the Pulse on LinkedIn. They were awesome; they had such great tips. Hewas so honest about all the things that went wrong, and we loved his methodicalapproach and analysis to it so that he would make an even better event nexttime. We thought we should have him back on WTFFF?! to talk about that. He is a student, and he put on a 3D printing event. Hehad no event planning experience; this is not his background. He is anengineering student. Was it train wreck? Or did it work? 3D Printing Safety First with Gail Greatorex of Product Safety Solutions
In this episode of WTFFF?!, 3D Printing Safety First, we have an interview from downunder with Gail Greatorex from Product Safety Solutions. We talked with her via social media a long time ago, when we first started the podcast. She was pointing us to materialsafety data because we were talking about filament, air quality, and some ofthose things at that time. She was also pointing out other significant safetyand quality issues, so we have been wanting to have her on the podcast for awhile. I’m glad we finally made that happen with the time difference. Is There Exceptional 3DP Customer Service?
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss how some 3D Printer manufacturers are building brand loyalty by providing exceptional customer service. One thing that we have learned in business is that you can not have exceptional customer service without allowing for “exceptions.” Here is where US companies may have an advantage over foreign competition. It is hard enough to build brand loyalty when you have a US office and customer service team, forget it if you are trying to service US customers remotely from your native country. 3D Print Fail Fast & Forward
In this WTFFF?! episode Tom and Tracy discuss how success in 3D Printing involves failing, but failing as fast as possible while spending the least amount of money possible. There are arguments to be made that you should not buy your own 3D printer, and just use 3D Hubs, the UPS Store, or a service bureau. Others would argue that having your own 3D printer is the fastest way to fail at the least cost, and the way to go. Regardless, whether you are prototyping parts for tooling, testing parts for production, or using 3D printing to create fine art, time is money. 3D Printing Nerd Power Guides with Joel Telling of 3D Printing Nerd Show
In this episode of WTFFF, 3D Printing Nerd Power Guides, we have an interview with quite a character, Joel Telling. His YouTube channel is “3D Printing Nerd.” We love that name! He really has a lot of fun with what he does here on his YouTube channel, and it’s all about 3D printing, as well as some things non-3D-printing just for fun. He has a lot of videos and 6,000 subscribers. No companies are providing the entire package of customer service and resources to make customers successful. It’s one of the things we are starting to see changing a little bit in the industry.
