From his 2013 live album Spaces on the Erased Tapes label, “Says” pairs a looping, arpeggiated analog synth pattern generated from his custom rig with a moody, melodic, reverb-drenched piano. The piece evolves almost entirely through gradual filter movements and subtle layering, slowly opening the harmonic spectrum over its eight-minute runtime. Recorded live, it captures not just the sound but the physical presence of the room, with Frahm shaping and automating the tones in real time.The effect is hypnotic, somewhere between Steve Reich’s phase minimalism and the analog glow of early Tangerine Dream. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing Frahm perform a few times and always leave a little stunned. His shows feel part recital, part laboratory experiment, featuring rare instruments like the glass armonica,* played by gliding wet-gloved fingers across the rims of rotating glass bowls, not unlike rubbing the tops of wine glasses. His music trades virtuoso flash (though he is an exceptionally skilled player) for something far more immersive: texture, space, and the emotional power of small sonic shifts unfolding over time. Occupying space between sleaze and sophistication, somewhere on the spectrum between Serge Gainsbourg’s smoky cabaret drawl and John Cooper Clarke’s acerbic street poetry, “Allbarone,” is Baxter at his most mordant: clipped, sardonic vocals narrating brittle egos and dimly lit escapades. Over a looped acoustic guitar and a distant, reverberating bass synth, Droll delivers a delicate yet affecting vocal performance, offering comfort to an ex-lover: “You say you’re fine and I hope you’re alright, but lately all I hear is what you croon when you cry… I remember nothing but the way we were.” As Droll’s subdued voice attempts to steer the jilted ex towards hope, the refrain—“I remember nothing but the way we were”—returns like a ghost of the past, punctuated by frenetic piano stabs that underscore the lingering pain echoing the song’s emotional core. On With Strangers, Droll proves her skill at fusing bedroom pop intimacy with electronic textures and experimental percussion. The result is a contemplative, often challenging collection that recalls the genre-defying spirit of ’90s icons like Beck and PJ Harvey.Bonus attention is also due to Donna Summer’s powerful cover of Vangelis’s 1981 track “State of Independence.” Produced by Quincy Jones, the recording stands out not only for its bold reinterpretation, but also the star power behind its gospel-infused chorus. To add to the supergroup aspect, this version is remixed by Superpitcher, a German producer who happens to be a member of Pachanga Boys (another electronic supergroup featured previously on Yeahyal 25 as the highlighted track). Dins El Llit leads with a delayed bongo tap over a pulsating 909 kick that slowly builds with more and more rhythmic features, (clicking sticks, hi hats, shakers and delayed voices mumbling indecipherably) until finally pulsating blips and bells carry an ethereal melody onward towards Vangelis-like synth pads. On It’s a Myth, the 2017 album on Merge Records, Sneaks offers her longest track (weighing in at a whopping three minutes and fifteen seconds), “Look Like That.” Staying true to form Moolchan offers up a catchy monotone refrain, “What do they look like? The trio channel acts like Le Tigre whilst also carrying the torch for post punk/new wave bands like The Slits, Tom Tom Club and Wire (with an a bit of Velvet Underground psych influence for additional good measure); despite all these similarities, Automatic still feel fresh, innovative and modern. Their second full-length, Excess, on Stones Throw Records was easily one of my favorite albums of 2022 and still gets many routine listens due to its raw yet also somehow polished stylings, coupled with its subversive and idealogical lyrics. Skyscraper offers up alienation and anti-capitalist angst over a slick, post-disco drum break, ethereal 80’s synths, and Glaudini’s brooding monotone delivery which all helps to highlight their anomie, “Change if you want or stay the same, there’s no difference in the end. A Barely Lit Path begins with a sputtering drone buried under a self-conscious, electronically morphed vocal/electronic query: “If I empty my mind and scoop out my skull, what gifts would I find, what secrets inside?” that responds with a warm organ and self-deferential response, “nothing inside, just a slug that provides a barely lit path from your house to mine…”The self-addressed Q&A’s conclusion, which seems nostalgic for genuine connections and human bonds formed IRL, builds with confidence under this realization… the warm blanket of pulsating drones and arpeggiating chirps slowly lifts until reaching an ethereal, orchestral crescendo (conducted and arranged by Robert Ames and performed by the Nomad Ensemble). As it builds we hear angelic voices singing what sounds like Baroque exclamations of “Glory” until finally resolving into a strong, pulsating synth that now, finally seems content with itself. With its throbbing bass stabs that accentuate piano and echoing vocals pleading for payment, “Paid” pays homage to the late 70s and early 80s (while still feeling quite contemporary and relevant) with its deft technique. Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, the self-taught pianist initially gained local notoriety as the front door bouncer for local bars until he befriended James Petralli, of White Denim, who helped him produce his album. You can play this track with joy as you type up your future invoices.Honorable mention goes to Pavement’s b-side “Harness Your Hopes.” Recently, I selected Pavement on my streaming service and was surprised to find that the top song was a tune I didn’t recognize from one of my favorite albums (in fact, another track from the same album is on a previous YeahYal). After more research, I discovered that the mystery song was a b-side that was added to their re-release, but I was still surprised that this particular song was listed as Pavement’s most popular, given they had so many popular albums with other great tracks. Apparently due to the mysteries of the algorithm, “Harness Your Hopes” was promoted to many future listeners on Spotify where it became even more popular when some of those same people started including it on TikTok posts. How do viral anomalies like this occur… are the lyrics cross-referenced with current events? Did the line “And the freaks have stormed the White House” make a 1997 track seem exceptionally relevant to an AI bot in 2021 when this track became popular? All I know is that Stephen Malkmus is a true wordsmith and his lyrics are a delight to listen/read/savor. I’m thrilled to have found this new/old track and I’m glad to know the algorithm is listening.On a final note, it’s an absolute shame (and maybe not a coincidence) that the four arguably best tracks on this mix (see below) are not available on streaming services. Taken from the 2023 album Principia on Sub Pop, “Wonder” begins as a traditional, twee pop tune before evolving into an exciting monster. It begins with the ethereal voice of Margaux Bouchaudon almost pleading with herself, “How can I stop, and do I want it?” before a pulsating bass line forcefully shifts the musical tone and forces her to reluctantly convince herself, “I’m a good human being, my mama said, and I hope she’s right…” As she struggles to come to terms with her life choices the pendulum swings back again leading her to wonder, “Who am I fooling? The duo offer up Azrael, a pulsating, yet somehow melancholy, banger that I can only hope is an ode to Gargamel’s evil cat Azrael from the Smurfs, but more likely refers to God’s archangel of death from the Quran and Bible. Unfortunately, and more often than not, an artist’s attempt to pay homage to a classic is just an inferior replica. This is not the case with Cat Power; rather than simply performing another artist’s song, Marshall re-interprets it and then turns it on its head. And with Bad Religion, she takes a track from Frank Ocean’s seminal classic, Channel ORANGE, and creates a version that is not only nearly unrecognizable from the original, it is arguably better. Honorable mention, to These Days, a rare Frank Ocean track that was supposed to be on his never released 2020 album, A Juicy Red Apple, a rarer house record by Skin Up that is sooo catchy, and None of it Matters, the beautiful exit track by my old bandmate Gustav Baller and Dana Boulé. In addition to being incredibly funky, it’s also admittedly funny as Mills lists cocaine’s debilitating effects with a splash of color, “Smokey Robinson could have wrote way more songs, Richard Pryor didn’t have to catch on fire, and Natalie Cole lookin’ way too old.” The Brighton, UK duo known as Wildcookie consists of producer Freddie Cruger and vocalist Anthony Mills who dropped their experimental album Cookie Dough on Tru Thoughts records in 2011. This mix has a few tracks from artists (Rasmus Møbius, Eddy Grant and 7A3) that are not available on streaming unfortunately. 🤷This episode’s highlighted track:Simian - Never Be AloneForming as university students from Manchester, England in 2000, the psychedelic electronic pop experimentalists Simian (consisting of James Ford, Jas Shaw, Alex MacNaghten and Simon Lord) made a name for themselves by blending 60s style harmonies and hypnotic Krautrock rhythms with the Brit Pop of their era to form an original and unique sound. 2002’s Never Be Alone ends with Simon Lord screaming “We are your friends, you’ll never be alone again!” over a pulsating, staccato organ synth and a beautiful, lilting falsetto harmony. Simian made two brilliant albums before breaking up but were resurrected in 2006 when Never Be Alone was remixed by the French producers, Justice for a college radio song contest. The song was a giant success and propelled Justice and their label, Ed Banger Records, to stardom. This episode’s highlighted track:Le Mans - Canción de Todo Va MalFrom their final 1998 album titled, Aquí Vivía Yo, (I lived here) San Sebastián, Spain, indie rock band, Le Mans’ “Canción de Todo Va Mal” (Song about Everything Going Wrong) is an elegant and moody ballad about the end of the world laid over a mysterious, almost tribal programmed drum beat. True to their form the Basque country quintet toy with this haunting theme by juxtaposing it with beautiful mandolins, horns, drums and piano that slowly build (the vocals for the 8 minute song don’t even appear until 2/3 in) into a welcome crescendo evoking the sounds of Belle and Sebastian, Stereolab or Serge Gainsbourg merged with the sultry vocals reminiscent of Astrid Gilberto.
