You Pick The Movie

The great John Brennan joins the pod to discuss a movie that is disgusting, rageful and weirdly inspiring — Damon Packard's Reflection of Evil!This is a great episode! John's the man and we knew he was going to pick some weird underground movie that no one's heard of, but this was way weirder than we expected. Damon Packard is a truly independent filmmaker. He breaks every copyright law, experiments with different cameras, dubs over everybody's voice, gets banned for life from Universal Studios, fights dogs, stuff his face with slop...it goes on and on. The movie's almost unwatchable, but the more you think about it and the more John talks about it, the more you start to like it.Check it out!

The hilarious Max Fine joins the pod to talk about the underrated Brad Pitt movie, "Killing Them Softly." Released in 2012, critics and audiences expected a Scorcese-esque crime thriller and instead got a 90 minute economic crisis allegory. It wasn't received well. Idiots! This movie is great!

Levin and Levi sit down with comedian Trent Mabry to discuss what some people consider the last great comedy — MacGruber! A movie that bombed so hard in theaters but through the years got a cult following.

Is Cillian Murphy the bravest actor in history? His tiny dork in 28 Days Later says so! Michael Good joins us on the pod hot off his Kill Tony debut! Comedian Jill Weiner joins Levin and Levi to talk about Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers. A movie about the media's sensationalism of violence. We all wanna see some good ole murder! Is it a good movie? Jill thinks so. Oliver Stone makes Oliver Stone movies. That's that.We're all over the place on this one. Jess reads Oliver Stone's entire wiki page, we make fun of Whitney Cummings, talk about how River Phoenix was better than Jaoquin, and Levi breathes heavily into the microphone. Smooches!

Jessica and Levi discuss a true masterpiece with the funny and questionably Jewish Matt Benjamin. An iconic film that has stood the test of time, "The Girl Next Door." A movie about love, pornography and scholarships? IT STINKS!

Julia "Goolia" Kastner joins the pod to discuss Rob Reiner's "When Harry Met Sally." Beware of spoilers, they get together in the end! Julia, Jessica and Levi talk love, relationships and Genghis Khan (friend of the pod), and we don't mention the Katz's deli scene once.

Derek Humphrey joins our tirades. This week it's Begonia. We weren't expecting a movie this recent, but here we are. So, yes, there are spoilers. Don't listen if you live under a rock and haven't seen one of the best movies of the year.  We discuss men, Coke cans, and how we all would bang Ben Affleck over Matt Damon. Jessie Clemons, if you are reading, the Oscars robbed you. 

  The third amigo joins Levi and Levin with the one and only, Talal Alyan, with Michel Gondry's  2004 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind- a beautiful, miserable film about love, memory, and the desire to forget the people who absolutely devastate you. Some of us enjoy the film and understand it's about choosing connection, even when it hurts. The other is, well, a coward. If you listen closely, you can hear the "fear".  We also discuss the beginning of the end of the ever-so-loved archetype  "manic pixie chick" and the beginning of the "performative brooding male," the cast, Levi cries... ok, no, he doesn't, but wanted to see if anyone actually reads this. We interrupt each other, gang up, talk over each other's plot points, and absolutely project our own baggage onto the film, like real friends.  This episode is a heater. Just listen to the damn thing. 

For the first episode of You Pick the Movie, Levi and I are joined by comedian friend  Nick Tilleli, who kicks things off by choosing the most aggressively 90s action movie possible: The Last Boy Scout. We talk Bruce Willis, unhinged dialogue, football violence, and why every character in this movie seems like they haven’t slept in weeks. Along the way, we get into comedy, growing up on movies like this, and how the films you watched way too young end up shaping your personality. This is the tone of the show—movies, dark humor, and talking way too much about things that probably didn’t need this much analysis.
