You Seem Fine Podcast

Hannah Shahabi, LPC and Roland Scheppske, LPC are two millennial therapists living in Virginia. Hannah and Roland have often found themselves having lengthy conversations with one another and developing hot takes about different therapy topics. It was in these discussions that the two of them realized a lot of ways that they mentally envisioned these aspects, were through the specific lens of a millennial (i.e. those born between the years of 1981-1996). With the fun spin these life experiences give to their hot takes, both Hannah and Roland decided that being able to express these thoughts and appeal to others, who often find themselves in a “I’m fine, this is fine” mentality, would not only be fun, but also beneficial. Specifically, for listeners to be inspired to seek out and achieve betterment in their own therapy journey. The You Seem Fine podcast provides an inside look on how Hannah and Roland conduct therapy around that topic. as well as how they handle that personally in a seg

With Main Character Energy, Comes Great Responsibility

Season Finale!Hot Take: Emotional ownership isn’t just awareness — it requires skill-building, accountability, and ESPECIALLY therapy. We talk a lot about being emotionally aware. Naming feelings. Knowing our triggers. Asking for space. But awareness alone isn’t emotional ownership — and this season finale asks the harder question: what do we do with our emotions once we notice them?In this episode, Roland and Hannah break down emotional ownership as an active, ongoing practice that goes far beyond insight or good intentions. They explore why emotional intelligence isn’t something we’re just supposed to “figure out,” and why developing EQ requires the same kind of education, coaching, and structure as any other skill. Friends can support us — but they aren’t trained to challenge patterns, hold accountability, or create the safety needed to grow.Through metaphors, clinical insight, and honest reflection, this conversation tackles avoidance, ghosting, accountability, boundaries, and the responsibility that comes with taking up emotional space. At its core, the episode makes a bold case for therapy as the place where emotional ownership is learned, practiced, and integrated — not perfected, but strengthened over time.

I Like My Money Where I Can See It-- Hanging in my Closet.

Hot Take: Is Work to Live or Live to Work better? Neither mindset is inherently better — sustainable work–life balance matters more than choosing a side.Is it healthier to work so you can live, or live so you can work? In this episode, Roland and Hannah dig into one of the most debated questions in modern culture and unpack why the answer isn’t as simple as picking a philosophy. They explore how both mentalities offer structure, purpose, freedom, and fulfillment — but also come with real costs when taken to extremes. From hustle culture and productivity-as-worth to privilege, burnout, and nervous system overload, this conversation highlights how work shapes identity, values, and well-being far beyond a paycheck.Rather than framing the debate as either/or, the episode invites listeners to look inward: How does your body respond to your work life? What needs are being met — or ignored? And what would balance look like if it were defined by your values instead of cultural pressure?Because the goal isn’t choosing the “right” mentality — it’s building a life that actually feels livable.

The Cost of Caring (Not Covered by Insurance)

Hot Take: Professions that routinely absorb secondary or vicarious trauma should require ongoing therapy or structured mental-health evaluations. In this episode, Roland and Hannah are joined by attorney Chip Clapp to unpack a provocative but necessary conversation about care, responsibility, and sustainability in trauma-exposed professions. From healthcare and law to therapy and emergency response, many roles require people to hold the emotional weight of others—often without adequate support.Together, they explore what vicarious trauma actually is, how it shows up over time, and why compartmentalization and “toughing it out” aren’t long-term solutions. The conversation moves beyond individual resilience to examine systemic responsibility: What does it mean to truly respect professions built on empathy? How do we balance personal accountability with accessible, ethical support structures? And what would prevention look like if we took emotional wear and tear as seriously as physical safety? This episode invites listeners—especially helpers, healers, and advocates—to rethink burnout, normalize care, and imagine a future where tending to mental health isn’t optional, but essential.

    Who is the Overwhelmed Achiever?

Spotlight Episode: Understanding overwhelm as a nervous system response, not a personal failure. What happens when being “high-functioning” doesn’t actually feel functional? In this spotlight episode, Hannah takes listeners inside The Overwhelmed Achiever — a framework for understanding people who appear capable, driven, and successful, yet feel chronically stressed, exhausted, or never quite enough. We explore how overwhelm often develops as an adaptive response to pressure, trauma, and a culture that rewards productivity over well-being. From imposter syndrome and burnout to perfectionism and high-functioning anxiety, this episode unpacks how achievement can quietly turn into survival — and what it looks like to interrupt that pattern with intention. This episode invites you to notice your body, question inherited definitions of success, and practice pausing without guilt.Because sometimes the most radical act for an achiever isn’t doing more — it’s deciding you’ve already done enough.

    Her Sister Was a Witch!

Hot Take: Many people who meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis aren’t “pathologically ill” — their bodies are responding appropriately to mis-attuned, oppressive, and unsafe systems. In this episode, Roland and Hannah are joined by Dr. Monica Band for a deeply nuanced conversation about mental health, diagnosis, and what we often miss when we pathologize human responses to cultural harm. Together, they explore the idea that anxiety, depression, dissociation, and burnout may not always be signs of something “wrong” with a person — but adaptive responses to environments that demand too much, offer too little, or fail to keep people safe. They unpack the role of diagnosis as both a tool and a limitation: how labels can bring clarity and access to care, while also reinforcing stigma, othering, and a false sense of defectiveness. The conversation challenges all-or-nothing thinking, social media over-diagnosing, and the pressure to be “normal,” while making space for resilience, post-traumatic growth, and community as medicine. This episode invites listeners to move away from self-blame and toward curiosity — asking not just what’s wrong with me? but what might my nervous system be responding to?Because sometimes healing isn’t about fixing yourself — it’s about changing the conditions around you.FIND DR. So You Think You Can Advocate?

Hot Take: Do better & get involved — advocacy is more accessible than you think when you know your values, strengths, and what you can offer. This week, Roland and Hannah sit down with lawyer and activist Emma Shahabi for a powerhouse conversation about what it really means to get involved in activism. Spoiler: it’s not about being perfect, politically fluent, or chronically online — it’s about knowing who you are, what you care about, and how your skills can support a movement.Emma breaks down the biggest myths and barriers that stop people from taking action, from the “I’m not political” mindset to the fear of messing up. Together, the trio explores how identity, privilege, and intersectionality shape our roles in advocacy, and why small, consistent actions can create just as much impact as large-scale organizing.Whether you’re a seasoned organizer or someone wondering where to start, this conversation reminds you that advocacy isn’t about doing everything — it’s about doing your thing, with intention, courage, and community. Here are some accounts that Emma referenced in the episode. You're encouraged to look into these accounts and find similar ones to efforts you believe in.@dear_white_staffers@btnewsroom@theslowfactory@pslnational@palestinianyouthmovement@intersectionalenvironmentalist

You is Kind. You is Smart. You is Important.

Hot Take: You have to love yourself before you can love someone else. It’s a phrase we’ve all heard — maybe even said — but what does it really mean to “love yourself first”? In this episode, Roland and Hannah break down the complexities behind one of self-help culture’s most repeated mantras. They explore the pressure this saying can create, especially when love isn’t linear, self-esteem fluctuates, and healing doesn’t have a clear endpoint. What if you’re capable of loving others deeply even while struggling to love yourself? Who decides when you’re “enough” to deserve love — and how do we redefine what that even means?Through real talk and reflection, the hosts dive into authenticity, boundaries, and what it looks like to care for yourself without falling into perfectionism or hyper-independence. From reframing self-love as a practice to finding joy in your own company, this episode invites listeners to replace judgment with gentleness — and remember that love, for self and others, is an ongoing process.

I've Got a Blank Slate, baby, and I'll Write Your Name

Hot Take: Self-disclosure is necessary and therapeutically beneficial in the therapy room. This week, Roland and Hannah are joined by psychologist Dr. Chloe Goldbach for a candid conversation on one of the most debated topics in the therapy world: therapist self-disclosure. Should clinicians be a “blank slate”? Or does sharing parts of ourselves actually make the therapeutic relationship stronger?Together, they explore how self-disclosure can foster trust, model vulnerability, and create more authentic connections — especially in communities where shared experience matters. From challenging the rigid “never self-disclose” lessons taught in grad school to unpacking how culture, identity, and power shape disclosure, this conversation blends clinical insight with real-world nuance.Dr. Goldbach brings a feminist therapy lens to the table, emphasizing how therapist humanity isn’t a flaw — it’s a strength. Whether you’re a clinician rethinking your stance or someone curious about what happens behind the therapy room door, this episode invites you to consider how showing up as yourself can be a radical act of care.https://lgbtcounselingdmv.com/dr-chlo%C3%AB-goldbach%2C-ph-dhttps://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists/chloe-goldbach-arlington-va/1317255https://www.youtube.com/c/TheChloeConnection (Also on IG!)https://www.amazon.com/Counseling-Gender-Expansive-World-Resources-Therapeutic-ebook/dp/B0BJ172NDN

If You Wanna Be My Lover

Hot Take: Friendships in your 30s should be quality over quantity. As we move through our 30s, friendships start to look different. The spontaneous hangouts get fewer, the group chats get quieter, and suddenly “catching up soon” turns into “maybe next month.” In this episode, Roland and Hannah unpack what it really means to have quality friendships in adulthood — and why that phrase might be more complicated than we think. They explore how our energy, priorities, and sense of connection shift as we grow, and how that impacts the way we show up for one another. What happens when a friendship no longer fits? How do we navigate the grief of drifting apart while making space for new, more aligned connections? And what if it’s not really about choosing between quality or quantity — but about finding what’s fulfilling and sustainable for you?Through humor, honesty, and a few hard truths, this episode dives into the evolving meaning of friendship, the necessity of boundaries, and the power of building community that actually feels like home.Because friendship in your 30s isn’t about how many people you have — it’s about who helps you feel seen, supported, and safe to grow.

    Chef's Kiss

The Season Finale is here! This episode we explore perfectionism and the sneaky ways it shows up in our lives. Perfectionism is a personality trait characterized by a relentless pursuit of flawlessness and high standards. It can manifest as self-motivation and drive to achieve success, but often leads to anxiety & low self-worth when standards aren't met. Hey baby, what's your sign? Hannah and Roland look to the stars this week in order to discuss just how deeply a horoscope can mean not only to them, but to anyone interested as well. Horoscopes have been around for a millennia, first appearing in the Mediterranean region sometime around the late 2nd or 1st century BCE. The word "horoscope" comes from the Greek words "horos", meaning "hour", and "skopos", meaning "observer". Join Hannah and Roland as they discuss horoscopes relation to religion, how in depth your horoscope & birth chart can really go, its place, if any, in the therapeutic process, and if these two Scorpio's truly do sting. *THIS PODCAST IS NOT A SUPPLEMENT OR REPLACEMENT FOR THERAPY CONDUCTED WITH A LICSENED PROFESSIONAL*

Get in Loser! We're High Functioning

This week, Hannah and Roland have their first guest on the podcast! Lily Shahabi, a consultant based in Boston, and Hannah's sister! Lily has struggled with this week's subject, joins to uniquely discuss how she handles life with High Functioning Anxiety.
