A monthly horror movie podcast, hosted by Cliff Barnes, with comedians Emily McQuade, Bryony No and Luke Poulton. Older episodes feature former devils CJ Lines, Phil Jerrod, Hollie Horror, Richard Trondsen and Sarah Dobbs. Each month we look at a different theme or subgenre, with a focus on two particular movies, and every show concludes with the challenging audio clips quiz, Scary Noises.

  1. 101

96: The End of the World

Celebrate the upcoming apocalypse with the Devils, as they dive into the movies End of Days, Holocaust 2000, Save the Green Planet!, Night of the Comet and Virus: Resurrection Day. Test your knowledge of 2024's horror releases in a special quiz, and hear our Highs & Lows of the year! Thanks for listening, and take cover!!!

  2. 100

    95: Brian De Palma's Twins

This month, the Devils get stuck into the brilliant filmography of Brian De Palma, but there are special guest appearances (in the chat) from Caroline Munro, Stephen Mulhern, Churchill the dog and some naughty, naughty doctors. Plus, and actual live improvised song from man like Si-Plotz!

  3. 99

    94: Class War

With thanks to listener Danny for the suggestion, this month we've been looking at recent movies with a Class War theme: High-Rise, Parasite, Ready or Not, Infinity Pool and Saltburn. Plus we review new releases Timestalker, Terrifier 3 and Woman of the Hour.

  4. 98

    93: Jekyll Times Hyde

When we're feeling Jekyll, we talk about movies based on Robert Louis Stephenson's famous horror novel, as well as Coralie Fargeat's phenomenon The Substance, which is Jekyll & Hyde-adjacent. When we're feeling Hyde, we discuss the You Bet! revival, slime and gunge, folk horror based on The Great British Bake Off, and ask what Mickey Mouse is serving. But which of our personalities will be victorious this month? Listen to find out! And don't forget to email the Horror Helpdesk: [email protected]

  5. 97

    92: Indonesian Black Magic

This month the Devils have been watching movies full of cackling witches, flying heads, magic spells and, erm, mayoral elections. It's a quintet of quite bizarre Indonesian horror movies from 1980-82, including Mystics in Bali and Queen of Black Magic. Along the way our discussion takes in surprising BBFC ratings, our Great Lord Willy Wasser, unnecessarily aggressive Carter USM fans, Yeti spaff, and the Mannequin Pis of Piss. And under the spotlight in this month's Horror Helpdesk segment: a question of continuity in the Alien franchise. Email the Horror Helpdesk at [email protected] for a chance to win exclusive DX5 merch!

  6. 96

    91: No Budget

This month the Devils check out the best and absolute worst in no-budget horror cinema, ranging from the well-known like Skinamarink to the thankfully obscure like Attack of the Cockface Killer. Plus we review new releases Longlegs, Maxxxine and In a Violent Nature, and figure out what the scariest movies of the decade so far have been! To be in with a chance of winning exclusive DX5 merch, mail the Horror Helpdesk at [email protected].

  7. 95

    90: Roberta Findlay

Apologies to our listeners in the north of England; it's not your fault that Inside No.9, Cilla Black, the Worst Radio Times Letter of the Month and Clear Sound mode on Simon's TV made us so regionalist! Let's blame a bad mood caused by having to watch the films of Roberta Findlay for this episode. We cover Blood Sisters, Lurkers, Prime Evil, The Oracle and Snuff, while in the Horror Helpdesk we examine how far we can stretch the definition of horror.

  8. 94

    89: 1950s British Horror

Come back with us to the 1950s and discover the first ever body horror FX movie, anti-European propaganda, an offensive-faced killer and more! Plus on the Horror Helpdesk, we consider different difficulty levels for certain films, while our Highs & Lows include new horror-adjacent releases Love Lies Bleeding and Hoard.

  9. 93

    88: Conspiracies

It's another fine episode of our horror movie podcast, and this month we talk about Nando's, Free Willy, pork scratchings, Catchphrase, pasta shapes, Exeter nightlife and Saved By the Bell. There's also a bit about conspiracy horror, with Blow Out, Jacob's Ladder and Broadcast Signal Intrusion among the films discussed. Plus, our Highs & Lows include new releases Immaculate, Monkey Man and The First Omen, and there's a question to the Horror Helpdesk about Late Night with the Devil.

  10. 92

    87: Nunsploitation

In this month's episode we look at some saucy nuns with horrific habits, in the movies Torn Priestess, Satánico Pandemonium, Benedetta, Nude Nuns with Big Guns and The Other Hell. Plus we deal with one listener's sticky problem in our Horror Helpdesk segment, which YOU can contact at [email protected]!

  11. 91

    86: Terrible Twosomes

What to say about this month's episode? You get 8 minutes on Wild at Heart, 5 minutes on The People Under the Stairs, 5 minutes on Mum & Dad, 6 minutes on Natural Born Killers, 7 minutes on Sightseers... and nearly 11 minutes on something so enormously irrelevant that you won't quite believe your ears. Plus the Horror Helpdesk deals with Found Footage, and there's another chance to win some exclusive DX5 merch in our listeners' competition.

  12. 90

    85: Swedish Death

In the first episode of the new-look DX5, we cover Swedish horror movies Hour of the Wolf, Thriller: A Cruel Picture, Let the Right One In, Koko-di Koko-da and Black Circle. We also help listener Sam out with his Rob Zombie-based confusion, and deliver some of the best Saltburn-related content you're ever likely to hear!

  13. 89

84: Dog Hits (with Phil Green)

Comedian Phil Green joins us for Bryony's final show... and she's not the only part of DX5 history making one last appearance...! Changes are afoot, so listen out for the big news towards the end of the episode, after we've looked at a bunch of killer dog movies. Also featuring our brand new listeners' competition, with the chance to win some exclusive Devil Times Five merch! Email your Horror Helpdesk problems and your competition answers to [email protected] Check out Phil's tour dates at https://www.philgreencomedy.com/

  14. 88

83: Bands of Death (with Dan Fardell)

This month, the Devils and guest comedian Dan Fardell come up with a new scoring system for movie reviews, ask whether a steel drum could ever be a P.I.M.P., and do the best impression of the Insidious franchise that you'll ever hear. Somewhere among all that, we consider horror movies about rock musicians, including Studio 666, Phantom of the Paradise, Rocktober Blood, Hard Rock Zombies and Green Room. Plus reviews of new releases Thanksgiving, Saltburn and even Anatomy of a Fall.

  15. 87

82: Modern Cults (with Katharyn Henson)

The award-nominated horror podcast is here for Halloween, with an episode about movies featuring cults like the ones in Midsommar, Baskin, The Sacrament and The Invitation. You'll find out who Dr Jiggles is, why Martyrs isn't quite extreme enough for us, and how angry Ti West's early films make us. Our guest Devil this month is Katharyn Henson @ewgirlyounasty!

  16. 86

    81: Dario Argento

It's the end of an era for one Devil this month, and that's before we've even moved onto the main theme of Dario Argento. 12 of his movies are dissected in forensic detail by the internet's most serious horror podcasters. Or whatever it is we do. You know the drill, it's just a load of pissing about and being naughty chumps, still somehow possessed by the legend of the Suburban Sasquatch. WARNING: This episode contains a teeny spoiler for Saw X.

  17. 85

    REWIND: Argento Flashbacks

Ahead of this month's episode on the Dario Argento movies we haven't covered before, here's a special bonus compilation of reviews of the dozen that we already have!

  18. 84

    80: Bigfoots

Behold: our shortest episode to date! Is it because the Bigfoot subgenre is so bad we didn't want to waste either our time or yours talking about this month's films for too long? Or is it because Cliff had a poorly tum-tum at time of recording? Bit of both, tbh. Anyway, come and hang out with us and our new friend Titty Bingo for 56 minutes, during which time you'll also hear our takes on new horrors Talk to Me, The Dive, Evil Dead Rise, Wolf and the Sharksploitation documentary. Warning: Contains major spoilers for Demonwarp (1988).

  19. 83

    79: Cannibals (with Chris Ward)

Take your longpig meat with a side of 1980s yogurts, have a bar fight to the tune of Wallace & Gromit's theme, discover the Muppets' gender rules, and pay tribute to Sir Elton John, as the Devils (featuring the Ancient Slumber's Chris Ward) discuss the cannibal horror cycle from Italy and beyond.

  20. 82

    78: Naughty Old Ladies

This month, our theme is psychopathic old(-ish) biddies, but the Devils also discuss punching actors in the face, mixing vodka with Squirt, the most tragic way to die, the most niche joke anybody has ever said, Andrew Lloyd Webber, alternative alternative titles for Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker, and incredible amounts of sperm.

  21. 81

    77: Halloween Continues...

Mugs! Mugs! Mugs! This month the Devils are covering the Halloween franchise, and to be honest they'd rather be talking about anything else. So look forward to a detailed run-down of the plot of Soccer Dog: The Movie (1999) among other pointless tangents.

  22. 80

76: Family-Friendly Gateway Drugs (with Amy Hoggart)

Self-confessed scaredy-cat Amy Hoggart joins the Devils to look at the tamer end of horror, with a trawl through some of the family-friendly films that got us and our listeners into the genre in the first place. Along the way, we ask: Does the 3D movie Yer Spaghetti actually exist? Flying Tiger - is it shit or not? Can Bryony Star Trekkify the podcast? And what's the German word for blowjob? Don't forget to check out Amy's brilliant podcast FeMANism!

  23. 79

    75: Post-Scream Slashers

Say what you see! It's episode 75 of Devil Times Five, and this time we're talking about the wave of American slashers that tried to emulate the success of Scream. Our features are Valentine and Cherry Falls, but there's also quite a lot about Brandon Cronenberg's new movie Infinity Pool, Mia Goth's other current showcase, Pearl, and the mad dinosaur nonsense that is 65. And remember: only the very, very best movie trivia is good enough for us!

  24. 78

74: Mans with Plans (with Isy Suttie)

Comedian & actor Isy Suttie (Peep Show, Damned, The 50 Funniest Moments of 2010) joins the Devils to talk about films in which men wreak violent revenge. Not only will you hear our thoughts on Dead Man's Shoes, Blue Ruin, Bull, Death Wish and Rambo: Last Blood, but you'll hear the latest from the Rainbow Cinematic Universe and the Cliff Cinematic Universe, and get a run-down of Isy's repertoire of regional accents. Meanwhile, game 74 of Scary Noises is hit with controversy. Please send us your stories of Gateway Horror for episode 76: on Twitter @DevilXFive, or by email to [email protected].

  25. 77

    73: Gen Z

Bryony's gone full goblin mode, but other than that, our Gen Z episode is brought to you by the letter B. Because when we're not talking about Gen Z horror movies, we're going on about balloons, bleps, Bough (Frank), Bill (The), bangs (gang), bums and beakers. Films up for discussion include Assassination Nation, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Cam, It Follows and So Vam, as well as new releases The Menu, Enys Men and Hellraiser.

  26. 76

72: Hands Off! (with Simon Plotkin)

There's a real end-of-term vibe to the Devils' last show of 2022, with lots of chat about space billionaires (and what they're really up to), making Kubrick movies filthy, and things you might find in a pub toilet. Oh, and sometimes we remember to talk about the films we've been watching, which concern severed hands coming back to homicidal life. Our guest Devil is Simon Plotkin from Brighton-based improv group Do the Thing, there's another round of Scary Noises, and we deliver our verdict on the Highs & Lows in horror this year.

  27. 75

71: Spanish Shockers (with High Contrast)

High Contrast, the Grammy-nominated don of drum'n'bass, joins the Devils for a look at Spanish horror through the 60s, 70s & 80s. He might seem an unlikely booking, but he really knows his horror! Films covered include the Blind Dead series, Panic Beats, Anguish, The Killer of Dolls, The House that Screamed and A Bell from Hell, plus we review new releases such as Terrifier 2, Barbarian, Sissy and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Plus: unusual cake recipes, Nazi Countdown, High Contrast's unexpected Norman J Warren connection, and an incredible anecdote about some missing chairs. One of our greatest ever episodes? Could well be!

  28. 74

    70: 80s Slasher One-Offs

Sarah Dodds from Chillennial Horrors returns to the DX5 fold for a look at some 80s slashers that never got themselves sequels, including My Bloody Valentine, StageFright: Aquarius, The Mutilator, Terror Train and Intruder. There's a half-arsed attempt to write deceased TV magician Paul Daniels into a horror movie, zen poetry from Emily, and more Scary Noises!

  29. 73

    69: Sexy Stuff

Phwoooarrrgghhh! This month the Devils get their fingers stuck into the sexier side of horror, covering movies such as X, The Sister of Ursula, She Killed in Ecstasy, Penetration Angst and our features La Bête and Evil Come Evil Go. We also review new releases Bodies Bodies Bodies, Crimes of the Future, Fall, Glorious and Speak No Evil, and play another round of Scary Noises. Plus: bell-ends at the Odeon, the sexiest Star Trek episodes, Ti West: shit or good?, Bryony & Emily improvise their own erotic horror story, and DIY advice from your favourite DIY comedy podcast!

  30. 72

68: Disease & Decay (with Zobo with a Shotgun)

Horror podcaster Zobo with a Shotgun is the special guest Devil this month, joining Bryony, Emily, Luke & Cliff for a pox-ridden trawl through movies about disease and decay. There are melting men and rotting women, and we've got parasites, smallpox and STIs... not us personally, but the films we're talking about. So put something on the end of it and take a dive into the unpleasantness with us!

  31. 71

67: Mad Scientists (with Sasha Ellen)

This month comedian & professional gamemaster Sasha Ellen joins the Devils to investigate how not to stay cool in a heatwave, the Serge Gainsbourg Police Force of France, clams (the shape thereof), and perhaps most relevantly, how to improve a human centipede. Because this is our Mad Scientists episode, featuring Corruption, The Skin I Live In, various versions of Eyes Without a Face and The Island of Dr Moreau, and of course Dr Heiter's horrible arse-to-mouth-to-arse-to-mouth monstrosity. Check out more from Sasha at https://www.sashaellen.com/

  32. 70

66: Scary Puppets & Creepy Dolls

Was Badger a cursed puppet? Is it possible to shag a knee? Which director is to blame for the death of DVD? Why would you fill a bath with warm piss? And what exactly is the point of Annabelle? All of these questions and more may be answered in the Devils' trawl through horror movies about deadly (and not-so-deadly) dolls, from Hugo in 1964's Devil Doll to Brahms in 2020's sequel to The Boy. Plus, we review new releases Men, Dashcam and The Innocents, and play another fiendish round of Scary Noises!

  33. 69

    65: Aussie Horror

CJ's back in the gang this month, Bryony's working on a building site, Cliff's train journeys have been getting saucy, and Christmas has gone all upside-downy. It's the topsy-turvy world of Aussie Horror on this month's Devil Times Five horror podcast, and we've been watching Wake in Fright, The Loved Ones, Wolf Creek 2, Hounds of Love, Howling III, Lake Mungo and more!

  34. 68

64: Body Horror (with Chris Mayo)

Big Fat Cult podcaster Chris Mayo joins the Devils to talk about Wallace & Gromit, The Little Mermaid, Shrek, Embarrassing Bodies, Neighbours and... oh hang on, no it's an episode about body horror movies isn't it. Oops, we did it again.... But don't worry - there is splatter here, including Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Slither, Possessor, Color Out of Space, The Ruins, Antibirth, Body Melt and even some Guinea Pig. Plus we review new releases The Northman, Morbius, Benedetta, Choose or Die and Broadcast Signal Intrusion.

  35. 67

    63: Superheroes? (with Dave Fensome)

This month the Devils look at the dark side of mainstream comic book cinema, with some superheroes who are rather more violent than the ones you get in the MCU! Namely: Faust, The Crow, The Guyver, Swamp Thing, Constantine, Blade, Spawn, Hellboy, Darkman and Brightburn. Something for everyone, including listeners who can't stand superhero rubbish... honestly!!! We're joined by comedian Dave Fensome from the Pop, Collaborate & Listen podcast, who knows his way around 90s music as well as comic books.

  36. 66

    62: Frankenstein (with James Swanton)

This month the Devils look back on over 90 years of Frankenstein adaptations, from the earnest to the very, very silly indeed. They're joined, appropriately enough, by the writer and star of Frankenstein's Creature, James Swanton. Plus the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre film gets a quick review, and there's another round of Scary Noises!

  37. 65

    61: Sharks (with Nik Coppin)

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water, the Devils are swimming into your very ear canals, with an episode all about shark movies. Orca farts, Wickes adverts and Hellraiser holidays all come under scrutiny, plus of course there's another game of Scary Noises to play along with!

  38. 64

    60: Black Horror (with Sampira)

For our last show of 2021 we've invited theatrical and visual horror art expert Sampira on to talk about Black issues in the genre, from the clever and thoughtful (Ganja & Hess; Get Out) to the absolutely inane (Black Devil Doll from Hell), via oddities like Def By Temptation, Vampire in Brooklyn and Bad Hair. Plus new releases Prisoners of the Ghostland, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, Slumber Party Massacre and The Scary of 61st get the DX5 treatment. Follow Sampira at https://twitter.com/___samo

  39. 63

    59: Troma (with William Stone)

"We were thinking about poop"... and who can blame us when we're wallowing in the filthy world of Troma, home to The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nuke 'Em High, zombie chickens, self-referential filmmaking and even a full-scale war? Comedian William Stone joins the Devils to dive in face-first. Also featuring reviews of new releases Slumber Party Massacre, Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, Last Night in Soho and Bull.

  40. 62

    58: Hammer (with Sooz Kempner)

Hammer Horror is the theme of this month's show, so the Devils get stuck in and discuss the Muppets, Cats, On the Buses and gay porn... err hang on, whut?! We're joined by comedian Sooz Kempner for a particularly off-the-rails episode. Check out her Classic Lines from Hammer Horror video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14_MAW-ZwD4

  41. 61

    57: Dracula (with Sallyann Fellowes)

As the 100th anniversary of FW Murnau's Nosferatu draws near, the Devils - complete with guest Sallyann Fellowes - look at an array of Dracula movies, from that 1922 classic up to Dario Argento's 2012 version, and figure out which actor played him best. Plus James Wan's new movie Malignant gets reviews, and there's another round of our audio clips quiz, Scary Noises.

  42. 60

    Phil Jerrod tribute

A tribute to our former Devil, Phil Jerrod, who tragically died earlier this month. We relive his funniest moments on the show, and hear his thoughts on: Bram Stoker's Dracula, The Cabin in the Woods, The Shape of Water, Stephen King, The Dead Zone, An American Werewolf in London, Saw and The Boxer's Omen. Plus, you'll hear Phil's last ever live performance, with his special horror-themed stand-up routine written exclusively for the podcast's live show at Sweet Werks, Brighton on 30th October 2020.

  43. 59

    56: Dystopias (with Joe Wells)

This month the Devils and guest Joe Wells look at the five Purge movies and a selection of other dystopian, horror-adjacent movies including UK classics Threads and A Clockwork Orange, and the Battle Royale films from Japan. 44. 58

55: Japes with Jason (with Nathan D'Arcy Roberts)

Here they are: the results of our listeners' poll to determine what your favourite and least favourite Friday the 13th sequels are! This month the Devils are joined by comedian Nathan D'Arcy Roberts - who's never encountered Jason Voorhees before! - to run top to bottom down that poll, as it were. Plus, we review new releases Old, A Quiet Place Part 2 and Fear Street, there are more Scary Noises to identify, and Cliff finds out what a centrefold is.

  45. 57

54: Women Directing Women (with Hannah Platt)

BBC New Comedy Award finalist Hannah Platt joins the Devils to look at a selection of horror films directed by women and featuring female leads, as well as dreaming up yet-to-be-made scary movies such as Comic Sans and The Cursed Stylophone. Classic films covered include Jennifer's Body, Revenge, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Trouble Every Day, Saint Maud, Prevenge and The Babadook, plus we we've got reviews of new releases such as In the Earth, Army of the Dead and Spiral: From the Book of Saw (sort of).

  46. 56

53: 1970s British Horror (with Andrew O'Neill & Megan Aileen Williams)

What does 1970s British horror have to do with the Saw movies? Everything, according to Cliff, who's currently obsessed with Jigsaw's antics. The other Devils and their guests (Andrew O'Neill & Megan Aileen Williams) are more into playing 70s TV bingo, with Monty Python, Dad's Army, Doctor Who and others getting a look-in. Plus we discuss a few films too, including new releases Great White, PG: Psycho Goreman and, yes, Spiral: From the Book of Saw.

  47. 55

52: John Carpenter (with Nick Helm)

This month the Devils are joined by comedy superstar Nick Helm to paw through John Carpenter's horror filmography. Plus we look at new releases The Reckoning, Godzilla vs Kong, A Little More Flesh II and Shortcut.

  48. 54

51: Cat III (with Dan Martin)

This month we're joined by special FX maestro Dan Martin (also of the Arrow Video Podcast), as we scour our way around the grotty barrel of surprisingly glossy Hong Kong movies known as Cat III Horror. Our features are the legendary The Untold Story and the far less well-known Horrible High Heels, and we look at everything from the wild Story of Ricky and A Chinese Torture Chamber Story to the controversial likes of Human Pork Chop and Red to Kill. The movies might be rough, but as always, we know how to have fun with them!

  49. 53

    50: Satanists (with Robin Ince)

The Devils are joined by very special guest Robin Ince (from BBC Radio 4's The Infinite Monkey Cage, among many, many other credits), to look at Satanists in 1970s horror. But inevitably, we get sidetracked talking about having sex with snack packaging, what TV presenter Noel Edmonds would get up to in Hell, and daddy issues. Don't worry, we do also discuss The Devil's Rain, Satan's Blood, To the Devil a Daughter, Sinthia: The Devil's Doll, Alucarda, Ring of Darkness and more! Plus there are reviews of new releases Wrong Turn and The Special, and another round of Scary Noises.

  50. 52

Other. podcast (@HorrorCultTrash on Twitter), and we've got reviews of hot new releases Run Hide Fight and Bloody Hell, as well as another game of Scary Noises.
