Unlocking Success with a One-Page Marketing Plan
One of the most common pitfalls I see small businesses encounter is the failure to have a business plan. Think of it as your Google map for your business. It's essential for determining where you want your business to be, understanding where you are now, and mapping out the steps you need to take to reach your end goal. But in today’s podcast I talk about another significant challenge many small businesses face is the lack of a marketing plan. Time and again, I hear from clients, "I don't need a marketing plan, Jen. I have loyal customers who come back, word-of-mouth referrals, and strong referral sources." But here's the thing: a marketing plan is not just about advertising. It's about knowing the direction of your business and how you're going to get there. A marketing plan involves understanding who your ideal customer is, what we call your avatar. It's about figuring out the best activities to achieve profitability and attract the customers you want to serve. It's also about identifying what products and services your market truly wants from you. You might think they want product A, but after digging deep into understanding your client, you may discover they actually want product B. In today's episode, I'll explore why having a business and marketing plan is essential, how to create one, and how it can transform your business. I'll delve into identifying your target market, understanding their pain points, and speaking their language to solve their problems effectively. So, whether you're just starting out or looking to refine your strategies, stay tuned as we uncover the secrets to building a roadmap for your business success. Let's get started!

Mistakes I Made in Business
In today’s episode of Dollars and Dreams, I dive into the mistakes I made when starting my business. Despite my background as an accountant, transitioning from employee to entrepreneur in 2006 presented challenges as I grew my business. I candidly share my early struggles with operating from my home office, battling imposter syndrome, and the negative effects of undercharging and over-servicing my clients. These experiences taught me the importance of setting proper boundaries and truly valuing the services I offer, lessons I hope will help other small business owners avoid similar pitfalls. Throughout the episode, I offer key insights on the necessity of fair charging practices, the dangers of under pricing, and the empowerment that comes from not letting clients dictate the terms of engagement. I also emphasise the importance of understanding your ideal client avatar to refine and target marking efforts effectively. To wrap up, I encourage listeners to adopt a strategic approach to business, which includes budgeting that starts with paying oneself first, maintaining strict control over cash flow, and preparing an exit strategy to guide long-term business goals.

Smart Moves to Protect Your Superannuation from Death Taxes
In today's episode of Dollars and Dreams, I want to have a bit of a chat around what is the only place in Australia that we have an inheritance tax or a death tax, and that's inside our superannuation funds when we die. When I talk with a lot of my clients about crafting a strategy to ensure that the taxman doesn't get a share of their super when they pass away, some may say, "Who cares? It's not my money, I'm dead. Who cares? They can pay some tax on it." But for most, avoiding unnecessary payments to the tax office is a priority, as leaving a significant tax burden for beneficiaries is something many want to avoid. There are strategies we can implement to eliminate or minimise this death tax from superannuation. Towards the end of today's podcast, I'll share the strategy I use for many clients to ensure their beneficiaries receive their super without a tax burden. It's not just about taxes on the super; it can trigger taxes for beneficiaries on their own income, Centrelink benefits, and more. Failing to implement this strategy can have a significant financial impact on beneficiaries. Let's demystify some terms. Anything paid out of your superannuation after you pass away is called a death benefit or a super death benefit. Many clients are unaware that superannuation isn't covered by their will; they fall under different legislations. It's crucial to consider where your superannuation will go. You can include it in your will, but you need to do one thing first: a death benefit nomination. There's a binding death benefit nomination and a non-binding one. Within each, there's also a lapsing and a non lapsing option. A binding death nomination compels the trustee of your superannuation fund to follow your wishes, even if they're not in the best interest of your assets. Conversely, a non-binding death nomination allows the trustee to consider your wishes but isn't mandatory to follow. So, if you nominate an estranged partner, for example, the trustee will take your wishes into account but isn't obligated to follow them.

Goal Setting: The Difference Between Trying and Achieving
Welcome back to another episode of Dollars and Dreams, today we’re not just talking numbers but something that ties closely with our personal lives and business landscapes – Goal Setting As an accountant, I’m always asking my clients “where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time? Where do you want to be?” To find the answer you must work backwards, creating a path from the 10-year vision to where you are currently standing. Think of goal setting as your GPS system, put in your destination and following the routes on how to get there. Life is always full of curveballs, that is why goal setting is not a set and forget, they need to be re-evaluated and adjusted. A personal goal of mine is to get healthier, I signed up to a gym in hopes of achieving my goal. I told my son ‘I’ll try and go to the gym four days a week’. His response ‘are you going to do it, or just try?’ Using the word try is unknowingly setting ourselves up for failure, our language shapes our commitment. Being mindful of our language can help us to achieve our goals. A Harvard business study has shown that people who write down their goals are 30 times more likely to be more successful. If you were given the opportunity to be that much more successful, wouldn’t you take it? Remember, goal setting is not a set and forget, if you find yourself not achieving your goals in the designated period, you need to look at whether you have set realistic goals. Constantly re-evaluating your goals is important to keep yourself motivated and accountable. If you have any questions about today’s podcast, do not hesitate to reach out. Closing the Vault: Unpacking Australia's Retirement Savings Divide
Welcome to another episode of Dollars and Dreams! Today, lets dive into the gender super gap and discover effective strategies to boost your retirement savings. While Superannuation has been a topic of conversation previously on this podcast, it is the greatest key to living the life you want in retirement. The gender pay gap lies at the heart of the superannuation pay gap, as it directly influences the compulsory super contributions made by employers. The good news is the gender pay gap is narrowing, now at just 12% as of November 2023. On average, men earn more than women with the average income for a male at $1,744 per week compared to a women’s $1,276 per week. This disparity can have long-term impacts on retirement security for women. Women are estimated to have greater life expectancy, with women over 55 becoming the fastest-growing demographic of homelessness in Australia. This highlights the importance of financial independence in retirement. In today’s episode, we’ll discuss government co-contributions, spouse rebates, and contribution splitting – all valuable strategies for boosting your super savings. We will also talk about the importance of contributing to your super while you are taking a break from work to raise children, remember fees and charges can eat into your balance if you’re not actively contributing. For more information or if you are not sure which strategy is right for you, please reach out to me at jenrichardson.co. Also mark your calendars, my Super Savvy Woman course is launching on March 4! Meet your Business Avatar: Not the Blue ones in the Movies, But your Ideal Client
Welcome to another episode of Dollars and Dreams! In today's episode, I want to talk about something that is really important for every business owner: your ideal customer. I’ll show you how to identify your ideal customer, also known as your business Avatar (and no, I'm not talking about the strange blue ones from the movies)! To truly understand them, you’ll need to uncover their fears, emotions, and motivations behind purchasing your product or service. When I ask my clients about their business Avatar, the usual response is "whoever wants to buy my product." But efficiency in marketing requires a narrower focus. Having an ideal Avatar for your business doesn’t mean you only have one; you can have multiple ideal customers with different traits. You need to know what product you are selling and to whom. If you are creating content or marketing to a specific person, it flows more easily and becomes more personal. Marketing is about connecting to your clients, and giving them the idea that you're appealing to them personally. Keep in mind, you will need to update your Avatar frequently to ensure you are growing with your ideal customer. When I first started Got Money Honey, I was marketing to Generation X and Y. As the years have gone by, my ideal customers are now Millennials because they have moved into my target demographic. Communication with demographics is different, so I now need to adjust to market to my ideal clients. If you have any questions about today's episode, please reach out to me at jenrichardson.co. We are going to be kicking off our Business Growth Academy very soon. I will see you all next week on Dollars and Dreams!

Growth vs Fixed Mindset
In today’s episode, I’m diving into the powerful concept of mindset – something I’ve always been passionate about. I firmly believe that our mindset shapes our actions and ultimately, our lives. Despite my strong belief in mindset, I’m not immune to moments of self-doubt. In those times, I examine my thoughts and feelings, think about the challenges I face and explore how I can overcome them. For me, mindset is all about control – over my finances, thoughts, processes, and the inevitable overwhelm we all experience. That’s where Carol Dweck’s theory of growth versus fixed mindset comes into play. A fixed mindset tends to resist change and sees setbacks as proof of incompetence. On the other hand, a growth mindset views failure as an opportunity to learn. Having a fixed mindset can hinder your progress in various aspects of life – whether it's pursuing hobbies, growing your business, or enhancing your personal life. But mindset is not set in stone; it can evolve over time. And if you find yourself leaning towards a fixed mindset, it’s not a life sentence. You can cultivate a growth mindset with practice and persistence. So I ask you these questions: do you identify more with a fixed or growth mindset? And if you lean towards a fixed mindset, are you open to shifting towards a growth mindset? Remember, success rarely happens overnight, and everyone starts from scratch. Don’t let your mindset hold you back from living the life you desire. Thanks for tuning into today’s episode. I really enjoyed discussing the power of mindset with you, and hope I’ve inspired you along the way. See you next week on Dollars and Dreams!

What I Wish I Knew Before Starting a Business: Strategies for Success
Welcome to another episode of Dollars and Dreams. Today, we're diving into the world of small business and the key to ensuring profitability. As a fellow small business owner, this topic is something that I am really passionate about. I opened my business from home when I had three baby boys, and it has grown over time. Along the way, I’ve witnessed many promising businesses crumble, not because of their lack of skill or dedication, but due to the absence of essential structures and strategies needed to survive difficult periods. Did you know that the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that a staggering 60% of businesses in Australia will fail within their first three years of operations, with 20% of those businesses failing within their first 12 months? It's a harsh reality that highlights the importance of proper planning and preparation. In my financial services practice, I work closely with clients to help them understand their business models, assess their organisational structure, create cash flow projections, and set aside contingency funds. The question I often pose to them is simple yet crucial: Do you have a solid plan for your business, or are you simply winging it? While some businesses might get by with a "wing it" approach, the odds are stacked against them, and they could easily become part of that discouraging 60% statistic. In this podcast, my aim is to equip you with effective strategies to counteract the common reasons for business failure. I won't just tell you that lacking a business plan or having poor marketing will lead to failure. I'll show you how to overcome these challenges. For aspiring entrepreneurs ready to take the plunge into the world of business and those looking to grow their existing ventures, reach. out to me at jenrichardson.co. Stay tuned because we have a wealth of valuable content coming soon to the Business Growth Academy. My ultimate goal is to ensure you don't become another statistic of business failure. Success in business hinges on planning and staying organised. Yes, I've made my fair share of mistakes along the way, but I've also discovered the solutions and emerged stronger. Thank you for joining me on this week's episode of Dollars and Dreams. I'm excited to connect with you again next week, where we'll continue our journey toward financial success.

Love and Money: Navigating Finances with Your Better Half
Money can be a sensitive subject, and it's often assumed that when two individuals enter a relationship, they will automatically share the same financial perspectives. Today’s episode will highlight how this misconception can lead to financial problems. And it’s an issue that doesn’t only affect new couples, it can arise at various stages of life. This is why it’s so important to have open conversations around money. I am constantly asked “Should we merge our bank accounts?”, but there is no one-size-fits-all answer here. It really depends on your unique situation and what you both feel comfortable with. If you feel uneasy about sharing the intricate details of your daily spending habits and financial choices with each other, then the concept of consolidating your finances into a joint bank account may not be the best choice for your relationship. However, agreeing to some ground rules from the outset is key. My husband and I have always had joint bank accounts. For obvious reasons, I look after the money in our relationship. I pay the bills, I look after the budgeting, and I do the forecasting and projections to see if we are going to have enough for retirement. But we do sit down once a year to have a good, honest conversation regarding money and our goals. Today’s episode will encourage you to sit down together to discuss your income and establish a budget and financial goals. There is no one size fits all and you need to work out what works for your relationship. Maintaining open communication in your relationship is crucial to avoid becoming one of the 32 percent of couples who experience financial difficulties. Thank you for listening to today’s episode. Don’t forget to like and share so other people can benefit from the advice about handling money in their relationship. I look forward to seeing you next week on Dollars and Dreams.

Say Goodbye to Super Stress: The Ultimate Guide to Consolidating your Superannuation
In today’s episode, we dive once again into the topic of superannuation. I know I have touched on super quite a bit recently, but for me it is such a crucial aspect of financial security – and many people simply don’t give their super the attention it deserves. In this episode, we discuss the importance of consolidating your super accounts and what you need to consider before taking that step. A recent report by UniSuper revealed that over four million Australians have more than one superannuation account, resulting in the unnecessary payment of double fees. Consolidating super is important because it gives you CONTROL over your money. Every superannuation fund comes with management fees or administration fees or both. If you have multiple accounts, you’re essentially draining your financial resources through these fees. It’s worth noting that there is no age limit for consolidating your superannuation. Even if you’re in the pension phase and have several funds, you can still streamline them into a single account. During this episode, I will provide you with a checklist of crucial factors to consider before consolidating your superannuation. It's especially important to understand any insurance policy implications before consolidating, as once you've initiated the process, there will be no going back (and you don’t want to lose a policy you actually still need!). We’ll also explore the advantages of consolidating your super, such as assessing which funds offer ease of access and minimal fees, and whether your chosen fund is on Australian Financial Review’s Naughty or Nice list. Having fewer superannuation accounts also simplifies retirement planning. It’s much easier to project your retirement balance if you have a single fund compared to managing four separate ones. Most funds offer projections that estimate your balance at the age of 67, the current retirement age. I hope this episode enlightens you about the necessary steps and considerations before consolidating your superannuation accounts. Additionally, for those interested in taking lasting control of their super but feeling unsure where to start, I have an exciting superannuation course called Super Savvy Woman – coming soon to Got Money Honey!
