La situazione precipita fino alla separazione dalla moglie, la quale inizia, insieme ad alcuni amici, un'azione legale nel tentativo di interdirlo. La sua opposizione alla "finzione" della società ed il suo delirio visionario lo costringeranno in un ospizio per il resto dei suoi giorni. Pirandello stesso, in una lettera autobiografica, lo definisce come il romanzo "più amaro di tutti, profondamente umoristico, di scomposizione della vita".
