Author and human rights/LGBTQ+ advocate, Michael Caputo returns to the show from NYC.  In July 2020, he joined us to discuss his autobiography, Dear Pat Cooper, about his journey with a loving family and an absent father.   This time, he's back to discuss his second book, Chameleon: A Memoir.  In this memoir, Michael shows us another side of  himself, in which he vividly describes his harrowing journey coming out of the closet and living authentically, post-Stonewall, pre-HIV/AIDS epidemic, and thereafter.  Michael writes, "I went from being an innocent altar boy to an older gay man caught up in the middle of the John Travolta sex scandal that put me on the front page of the Daily News and written up in People magazine and the National Enquirer....Once I let go of all that guilt that I grew up with and embraced my true self instead of hiding it, I started to live and enjoy my life."   Minerva & Ruben share a new place in Mexico.

Iowa Long-Term Care Ombudsman and former Iowa Congressional Candidate, Kim Weaver-Fritzche, returns to the show!  This time, Kim will discuss the importance of advocating for our elderly loved-ones in Long-Term Care.

This is our first live program for 2024 and it's a great one! Marie-Therese Connolly will join us from Washington, D.C., for a discussion on Ageism in the healthcare system,  elder justice, and her new book, The Measure of Our Age. MT is a leading national expert on elder justice who was awarded a MacArthur "genius" grant for her work that has shaped policy, research, and practice for decades. She was the architect of the federal Elder Justice Act, founding head of DOJ's Elder Justice Initiative (that helped to shape the 2015 White House Conference on Aging, National Center on Elder Abuse priorities), lead author of the Elder Justice Roadmap, and co-designer of the new community-based RISE model, a new holistic advocacy-based, harm reduction program for older people. We're very excited about this interview!!

Civil Rights Advocate and Author, Jake Sloan 01/28 by Dr Mara Karpel Your Golden Years | Self Help (blogtalkradio.com) Title:  Civil Rights Advocate and Author, Jake Sloan We'll be joined by Jake Sloan, who spent most of his adult life working as a civil rights advocate and labor-management consultant.  Jake will be joining us to discuss his new book, Standing Tall:  Willie Long vs. U.S. Government at Mare Island Naval Shipyard. This book is about Jake's experience as one of the "Original 21ers," a group of young African- American workers who challenged the largest West Coast U.S. naval base to provide equal opportunities and wages… and they won, influencing the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

We'll be joined by Alistair Hawkes, Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Clarity Breathwork specialist.  Alistair specializes in helping therapists prevent burnout. She will talk about what she learned from the experts presenters for preventing burnout and increasing self-care at her recent on-line Summit for therapists, caregivers, and others in the service professions.  And she'll let us know about her upcoming Free Masterclass, and her 12-session burnout recovery program that is beginning Wednesday 5/17.  And for Mother's Day, Dr. Mara will talk about a few more of the lessons she learned from her mom, from her social media series "Lessons from Mom."

Geriatrician, Dr. Michael Wasserman,  Chair of the Public Policy Committee of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine, returns to the program!  He is an author and editor of numerous books, a speaker, and a tireless advocate for improving healthcare for older adults, as well as improving care received in nursing homes.  He will join us to continue our discussion of some of the pressing current issues of geriatric healthcare and nursing home care.   Also, Rosie Davis, founder of the international organization, Yellow Heart Memorial, advocate for COVID victims, and co-author of the book, Who We Lost: A Portable Covid Memorial, will return to join us once again from Austin, TX.  Rosie will tell us about More Than A Number,  a traveling memorial, honoring those lost due to Covid.

This week, we're joined by Marsha Joiner, host of the Blog Talk Radio show, Betrayed by Hospice, and former Board Member of the Hospice Patients Alliance.  Marsha joins us to discuss how hospice went from being a way for people who are actively dying to die with minimum pain and with dignity to a profit-making business, causing people who are not necessarily in that category are convinced to enter into their care and where patients are often given one-size fits all drugs.   Marsha lost her own precious Mom by trusting hospice, where she was told they would do no harm but the worst harm imaginable killed her Mom.  This experience led her to advocate for the elderly and made it her focus to warn others about the danger of trusting without verifying. In addition, to her podcast, Marsha has a facebook group, Murdered by Hospice, that gives victims' families a safe place to share their tragedies and ask questions.  Marsha's goal is to inform the public, so that more informed decisions can be made without falling pray to manipulation.

We have another great program, when we will be joined from Ontario by Dr. Patricia Spindel.  Patricia is the Chair of Seniors for Social Action Ontario, she was a co-founder of the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly, and she is a former President of Concerned Friends of Ontario Citizens in Care Facilities. She is also a recipient of a Government of Canada medal for service to her community.   We are looking forward to having a discussion about elder advocacy

We'll be joined by Michelle Young Doers to discuss her book, Killing for Profit: The Dark Side of Hospice.  Michelle is a respiratory therapist who served for 5 years on the ethics committees of 4 major hospitals, she was a clinical instructor, and she worked on the front lines of health care during the SARS outbreak and the swine flu outbreak.  In her work, she has played an important role in the living and/or dying of patients with prolonged illnesses and decisions about hospice.  The point of her book is not to say that all hospice is bad.  In fact, the concept of hospice is great. But, she will discuss the big business of hospice and how to prepare yourself for such a huge decision without being marketed to and manipulated.

Gregg is a hospice and workplace chaplain and a professor.  While writing this book about his own survival from personal and family traumatic brain injury, providing hope, healing, inspiration with his story, he experienced several more family losses during the Covid pandemic.  Gregg will discuss his book and the post-script about how these losses strengthened his understanding of grief, while deepening his appreciation for the human and spiritual condition.  The twins Ruben & Minerva will be telling us about one of the most populated cities in the world, Mexico City. And Dr. Mara with more on Passionate Living and Caregiving in the "new normal."

In her film, Susie uses her own mom's story to take deep look into the the systematic crisis that has been going on for decades in long term care with the hope that, with greater awareness, we can, as a society, make real and positive changes in how we care for our elders.
