I had the incredible honor of reading an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of MAX IN THE LAND OF LIES: A TALE OF WORLD WAR II, by NYT Bestselling author Adam Gidwitz. After reading book 1, MAX IN THE HOUSE OF SPIES: A TALE OF WORLD WAR II, I didn't think there'd be any way to top such a powerful read, but if anyone could write an equally fantastic read, it's Adam Gidwitz! MAX IN THE LAND OF LIES is a fast-paced, intriguing book that keeps readers engaged, interested and invested in this inspiring middle-grade historical fiction read, while also teaching kids important WWII facts that they might otherwise not be exposed to. My Book Review of IT’S WATCHING, by New York Times Bestselling author Lindsay Currie!
I have read my fair share of creepy middle-grade books, but I must admit, no story has made me feel quite as scared as when reading, IT’S WATCHING, by NYT and USA Today bestselling author Lindsay Currie! Lindsay pulls out all the stops to create the perfect chilling middle-grade tale. I was first introduced to Lindsay’s writing when I read THE MYSTERY OF LOCKED ROOMS, an Instant New York Times Bestseller, and IT’S WATCHING is just as suspenseful and page-turning a story, but I’d say Lindsay took IT’S WATCHING to an even more nail-biting level! IT'S WATCHING should be on the top of all spooky horror lovers’ radars. My Book Review of ELEVEN RINGS: THE SOUL OF SUCCESS by Coach Phil Jackson & Hugh Delehanty!
Have you ever wondered what makes the best NBA coaches great? What sets them apart from the opposition? How do they compose themselves when their team breaks down or players experience a meltdown? I certainly have pondered these questions, and I'm so grateful the book ELEVEN RINGS: THE SOUL OF SUCCESS was brought into my life by FOX 40 Sports Director, Andrew Marden! As Phil Jackson shares in his memoir, the fundamentals are an important aspect of any NBA team's success, but the connections that are built are supremely impactful too. These connections can be formed emotionally or spiritually. Jackson reflects on his time in Chicago with the Double Three-Peat Chicago Bulls, and with the Lakers where he tried to plug the hole of a growing void between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. To learn more about Phil's life and the trials and tribulations of it, read ELEVEN RINGS: THE SOUL OF SUCCESS! My Book Review of THE FIRST CONSPIRACY: THE SECRET PLOT TO KILL GEORGE WASHINGTON
This is my book review of THE FIRST CONSPIRACY: THE SECRET PLOT TO KILL GEORGE WASHINGTON by New York Times Bestselling authors Brad Meltzer and Josh Mensch. The First Conspiracy shares a piece of American history that's not often taught in the classrooms or examined in textbooks. THE FIRST CONSPIRACY is filled with intriguing stories about our nation's first president, George Washington and includes events leading up to the early beginnings of the CIA and counterintelligence. A compelling, fast paced read that is based on real events, research, and a bit of intuition. The story shares declassified documents and letters that push readers to think deeper and question more because trust me, there is always more to the story. Be sure to check out THE FIRST CONSPIRACY: THE SECRET PLOT TO KILL GEORGE WASHINGTON! I personally read a young readers edition, created for a teenage audience, but for adults looking for a longer, more in depth version, check out the original, which is sure to be a treat too! A Talk With Authors Chris Baron & Torrey Maldonado About Countering Toxic Masculinity in MGlit!
In this interview I speak with Chris Baron and Torrey Maldonado, two award-winning middle-grade writers and two incredible people with big hearts. Their stories are heartwarming, engaging, but most wonderfully of all, they break societal norms! Their stories show readers the harsh realities that come with from toxic masculinity & they discuss how to combat harmful "stereotypical" masculine behaviors with positivity, empathy and healthy communication. Torrey and Chris craft strong, carrying, and confident young men who fill the pages of their stories with light, love, and compassion. Torrey and Chris are great author friends of mine, and I'm so grateful we could come together to use our platforms to spread information, positivity to those who need it most! Watch our talk and be enlightened and educated on the power of positive male role models in stories! "Toxic masculinity" in middle-grade books refers to the portrayal of exaggerated, harmful masculine traits in young male characters, often including behaviors like excessive aggression, emotional suppression, a refusal to show vulnerability, and a strong emphasis on dominance, which can be damaging to their mental health and relationships with others; these books can either depict these behaviors critically, showing the negative consequences, or inadvertently reinforce them through stereotypical character portrayals.
