I was recently commissioned to do a re-orchestration of it, removing all synthesized instruments from last time to create a new purely real-world orchestral sound. The key difference is the main beat throughout, which is now an accordion to imbue the traditional orchestral sound with that extra carnival/halloween vibe I was going for last year. Another one of my annual Halloween-related creations for this past October! Relatively simple orchestration this time around, less melodic and more atmospheric, all about a tall gothic tower… and its mysterious inhabitant… I've been using organs as my main instrument for the past couple of tracks that had similar concepts, so I wanted to change that up this time. The end result is a comparatively simpler sound, again less focused on a melody and more on just a general mood. And I'm really quite happy with how it all turned out. Love those low strings. This is a track I created as the theme for a fictional setting called "Wall City". The first portion is comprised of a military march, slightly dystopian, with a heavy drum/choir sound to give a sense of scale and power, which then transitions into a "grunge" rock piece (the first time I've ever attempted the style). The basic premise is that Wall City is a major economic center for a military dictatorship. Yet, swiftly and silently, organized crime has infiltrated many levels of the local government and is now basically running the show. Hence, the song begins as a booming military march and gradually becomes a swift yet chaotic grunge rock. The original story behind Wall City was created by Reynold James Dalton as part of an RPG setting for D&D games and the like. Here's the description of the location in his own words: Wall City is a central city for a steampunk/fantasy tabletop RPG setting. Under the command of the dictator, Fuhrer Jurgan Krieger, the tyrannical Fists of Luther keep the country tightly controlled, always alert for signs of sedition and treason. Meanwhile, the charismatic Darren Leingod and his loyal band of smugglers and thieves fight for the rights of the common man, the dignity of the motherland's citizens, and, obviously, reasonable profit. My main challenge in making this piece was to create those huge thumping notes toward the middle of the song. I wanted to give a sense of urgency, like a huge "alert" alarm sounding out, or the tense pounding of a heartbeat. I don't think I captured quite what I was aiming for, but I ultimately like the sound nonetheless. Oddly enough, my favorite section of the piece turned out to be the very beginning and ending: that deep, quiet, ambient beat. I'd love to explore that more in a future piece. This sort of feels like the "Bourne" series mixed with a space chase or something. Initially I was going for that bouncy, pumping, constant beat feel of the Bourne trilogy, but then I started messing around with all these synth sounds and it became a little more sci-fi-ish than I had planned. A very bouncy, quirky song and one of my more fun songs (I usually tend to do dark, mysterious, sad stuff). It was actually done as a section of the score for a 48 hour film festival short. A very wacky song of mine. I was just messing around and really liked what I stumbled upon. It has a sort of ethereal feel, like being in a timeless and shapeless space. It made me think of Escher's or Dali's paintings, hence the name. Not the type of music I usually come up with but I really liked its bizarre feel so I may do another one someday. A dark, foreboding, and slightly suspenseful piece. I kinda wish the piano was a little quieter in the beginning because it sounds a little blaring right now, but I like how the ending turned out with the final note (it sorta sounds like a huge clock has just stuck and it's time for the sinister plot to be carried out). A darker piece featuring one of my favorite instruments: the harp. I usually tend to use the harp in unconventional ways, such as the mega low notes in the second half of the song. Even though this song is slightly dark, it still has a sort of kid-like quality to it. It's mysterious, wondering, but hinting at possibly scarier stuff. It wouldn't be played for a kid's full-out nightmare, but possibly the moments right before that, as they lay quietly and alone in their bed while they stare out the rain covered window.
