#181: From OXFORD to HARVARD - Oxford Talk Reflections

Oxford. Harvard. And one quiet, surreal moment where it was just me, a camera, and a message I couldn’t keep to myself. In this episode of Finding the Upside, I’m taking you behind the scenes of two speaking experiences that stretched me, grounded me, and reminded me what real leadership is made of—humanity, hospitality, and belonging. I’ll share what it felt like to step into rooms built for history-making thinkers… and why the milestone was never the stage—it was the invitation the stage created. You’ll hear the unexpected lesson I carried from Oxford Business School into an even bigger moment at Harvard University—and the truth I want you to remember the next time you’re tempted to wait until you feel “ready”: impact isn’t earned by perfection. It’s created through authenticity.Inside this episode, I’ll unpack the mindset shift that turns pressure into alignment, what it means to share an idea worth doing before you have the perfect words, and why doors open when you keep believing in the value of what you have to offer. And then I’m passing the mic to you: the idea that keeps nudging you? The one you’ve been holding close? It’s time to name it—because naming it gives it life.If you want to see clips from these talks, connect with me on Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook, and check out the features on my speaking page. #179: Belonging Beyond the Workplace: Leadership That Extends Outward Part 4: LEADERSHIP THAT GIVES BACK Mini Series

Leadership doesn’t stop at your org chart—it follows you out the office door and into the communities your business touches. In this final episode of my Leadership That Gives Back mini-series, In this final episode of my Leadership That Gives Back mini-series, I’m closing the loop on everything we’ve talked about together. I’m closing out this conversation with one core truth: Belonging isn’t a workplace perk—it’s a leadership practice. And when belonging stops at the office door, it’s incomplete. Because organizations shape communities whether they intend to or not—through wages, policies, and who gets access… and who doesn’t.Leadership decisions ripple outward—through families, neighborhoods, dignity, and opportunity. That’s why giving back isn’t separate from belonging. It’s an extension of it. And if we build belonging inside our companies while ignoring our impact outside of them, we’ve missed the point. If you’ve been wrestling with purpose-driven leadership, workplace belonging, and business that actually means something, or what it looks like to build a culture that doesn’t just perform—but contributes—this one will hit home.Press play, then share it with a leader who’s ready for the responsibility to turn culture into community-level impact. 🎧✨ Listen now and keep deliver on big impact with me.Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:36] Leadership Doesn’t Stop At Your Org Chart[1:06] HOW Leadership Decisions Ripple Outward To Communities[2:03] WHY Giving Back Is An Extension From Belonging[2:41]  WHAT We Can’t Forget As Leaders[3:33] We All Have The Opportunity To Impact For GoodEpisode Show Notes Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeIf you’re ready to dive deeper and level up your learning beyond the Finding the Upside episodes, sign up for the Business Leaders Hub! #175: Real Women: 7 Minutes of Transformation with Lisa Cain

For a long time, Lisa Cain believed that protecting others meant holding parts of herself back. In this episode of the Real Women: 7 Minutes of Transformation series, Lisa shares a story shaped by careful restraint—and the moment she realized that healing wasn’t possible while she kept filtering her truth.Recorded live at the Revive and Thrive 2025 Empowerment Summit, Lisa reflects on what happens when we stop playing small, remove the armor we’ve learned to wear, and allow ourselves to be seen without editing or apology. Her story offers a glimpse into the kind of transformation that unfolds not through perfection, but through honesty. This episode explores the quiet courage it takes to choose vulnerability, the clarity that comes from naming what we’ve carried, and the unexpected connections that form when we stop hiding.Lisa’s story is part of a larger collaborative book project launching in 2026, created by the women whose voices are featured throughout this series. #174: How CEOs Can Embed Giving Back Without Overcomplicating It Part 3: LEADERSHIP THAT GIVES BACK Mini Series

Good intentions don’t create impact, execution does. In Part 3 of my “Leadership That Gives Back” mini-series, I’m getting practical about what it actually takes to build responsibility into the way you operate. Because most leaders aren’t avoiding impact because they don’t care; they’re avoiding it because they think it has to be complicated, messy, or risky. In this episode, I share the simple model we chose,  a clear 1% commitment tied to revenue (not leftovers)  and why that one decision changes everything: it makes giving back predictable, transparent, and embedded in culture, not dependent on “good years” or guilt-driven spikes. If you’ve been waiting for permission, perfection, or a massive initiative to “do it right,” this is your sign to stop overengineering's impact -  because grand gestures make headlines, but consistency builds trust. Listen now and take the one step that makes leadership real: do it, embed it, and let it scale with you. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:18] Good Intentions Without Execution Doesn’t Create Impact[0:43] WHY Most Leaders AVOID Giving Back[1:33] WHY Giving Back Matters[2:03] You Don’t Need A Massive Initiative - You Just Need THISMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level? #173: Why Local Partnerships Matter: NJ Devils Affiliate Partner Update

Training Innovations recently presented another New Jersey Devils home game at the Prudential Center through the Devils Affiliate Partner Program with Eleven Sports Media. For me, this partnership is about more than visibility. It represents a commitment to supporting our home team, connecting with other New Jersey businesses, and being part of a local community that believes in showing up for one another. There’s also a natural alignment between sports and the work we do every day. Championship teams train with discipline, communicate clearly, and execute together under pressure—the same principles that help organizations build strong cultures and high-performing teams. This episode reflects on why this partnership matters and why supporting local teams and local businesses is something I’m proud to be part of. #170: Profit, Purpose, and Performance: The Myth We Need to Break Part 2: LEADERSHIP THAT GIVES BACK Mini Series

Purpose doesn’t soften performance — it stabilizes it when everything else gets shaky. In Part 2 of my mini-series “Leadership That Gives Back,” I take on one of the most persistent myths in modern leadership: the idea that you can either build a profitable business or a principled one. Somewhere along the way, we were taught that caring costs too much… and that impact belongs in PR, not in operations. I’m calling that out and breaking down what actually happens inside organizations when leaders strip work of meaning. This shortie episode is designed to hit where it counts: trust, engagement, retention, and resilient performance. I share what I’ve learned from decades inside organizations (and what we’ve seen firsthand at MDR) about why profit is an outcome,  not an identity and purpose is a true performance driver when uncertainty shows up. If you’re done choosing between results and responsibility, press play and let’s build the kind of performance that lasts. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:27] Leadership is No Longer Measured by Outcomes[1:35] Purpose Becomes THIS When Clarity Disappears [2:14] Our Success Doesn’t Exist in Isolation[3:16] High Performance without Purpose Is Fragile[4:22] I’ll Leave You With This Final Question… Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level? #169: The Business Leaders Hub: Redefining Leadership and The Future of Work

In this special conversation recorded LIVE at the 2025 Revive and Thrive Empowerment Summit, I sit down with my friend and mentor, the incredible Tricia Brouk, to share something I’ve been working on and marks the official launch of The Business Leaders Hub.For years, I’ve worked with organizations, executives, and teams to transform the way they lead. What I’ve seen time and again is that true leadership isn’t about titles or hierarchy, it’s about self-awareness, courage, and a commitment to impact. That’s why I created The Business Leaders Hub: a global community where leaders can access the tools, training, and support they need to grow, rise, and create meaningful change in the future of work.During our conversation, Tricia and I dive into what leadership really looks like today. We talk about why the old models don’t work anymore, and why I created Rebel Leadership and how embracing values like trust, inclusion, and belonging can completely shift a company’s culture. I also share what’s inside the Business Leaders Hub, from on-demand training and curated resources to live group coaching with a diverse lineup of experts, all designed to help leaders step into their fullest potential. If you’re ready to lead differently and join a community that’s rising together, this episode is your invitation. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[1:09] How Do You Define A Business Leader? [2:50] Are Leaders Born Good Or Can They Be Taught? [10:24] Going Back To That North Star[13:53] Diversity Is Where We Get The Innovation[17:09] The Launch Of The Business Leaders HubEpisode Show Notes  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level? #168: Real Women: 7 Minutes of Transformation with Angela Hoover

What does transformation really mean — and when does it actually begin? In this episode of the Real Women: 7 Minutes of Transformation series, Angela Hoover invites us to rethink transformation not as a single defining moment, but as a choice we make again and again — sometimes quietly, sometimes courageously.Recorded live at the Revive and Thrive 2025 Empowerment Summit, Angela shares reflections shaped by a life that looked one way on the outside and felt very different on the inside. Her story touches on silence, survival, and the moment she realized that avoiding her truth was no longer an option. What unfolds is not a polished success story, but an honest reckoning with fear, shame, and the unexpected power of being seen. Angela’s experience reminds us that transformation doesn’t wait for permission — and that speaking your story can create connection in ways you never anticipate. This episode is part of a larger collaborative project leading to a book launching in 2026, created by the women whose voices you’re hearing throughout this series.Listen — or watch — and consider what might shift when you decide to say your story out loud. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:35] What Transformation Really Is [3:08] When Her Spiritual Transformation Started[5:01] WHAT No One Tells You About “Having It All”[8:10] WHY Your Story MattersEpisode Show Notes  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeIf you’re ready to dive deeper into the full Revive and Thrive Empowerment Summit, sign up for the Business Leaders Hub! #167: Why Impact Is a Leadership Responsibility (Not a Marketing Strategy) PART 1: LEADERSHIP THAT GIVES BACK Mini Series

Leadership isn’t shifting, it’s being rewritten in real time, and responsibility is no longer optional. In this shorty episode of Finding the Upside, I’m kicking off Part 1 of my four-part mini series, Leadership That Gives Back, and I’m naming the thing so many leaders tiptoe around: impact is already happening, the only choice is whether it’s intentional. I break down why “giving back” can’t live as a once-a-year initiative, a marketing campaign, or a feel-good add-on. Leadership that gives back is leadership architecture, the decisions we make, the systems we build, what we fund, what we tolerate, and what we ignore. And yes… even our silence speaks. You’ll also hear why I’ve shared the MDR giveback model publicly, not for optics, but for accountability and why conscious, connected leadership is the only model that scales trust long-term. Next up in the series: we dismantle the myth that profit and purpose can’t coexist and I’ll show you the new standard leaders must normalize. Press play and let’s build leadership that actually leaves something better behind—because impact doesn’t wait, and neither should you. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:26] Leadership Is Changing[1:35] This Is Not About Performative Philanthropy[2:42] Culture is Revealed By What You Truly Value[3:33] Leadership Does Not Live in Silence[4:42] Your Voice Matters.. Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level?      In this powerful and deeply personal talk from the Revive and Thrive 2025 Empowerment Summit, certified trauma care practitioner and mindset coach Stacey Uhrig takes us on a journey from her very first anxiety attack at age 12 to the transformative moment she stopped fighting her anxiety and started listening to it.In PART TWO of this two-part episode, Stacey shares how anxiety became a constant companion through every stage of her life—shaping her behaviors, fueling her drive, and eventually pushing her to a breaking point. But it was in a quiet, surrendered moment that everything changed. Instead of asking, “How do I get rid of this?” she began asking, “What is this trying to tell me?” That single shift unlocked a new relationship with herself, one built on compassion rather than controlDrawing from her personal experience and professional expertise, Stacey introduces her “HEAL” framework, a simple yet profound tool for acknowledging, engaging with, and ultimately transforming anxiety into a source of insight and empowerment. She reminds us that anxiety is not a flaw to fix—it’s a part of us that wants to be seen, heard, and understood. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by anxiety or longed for a new way to navigate it, this episode will offer you both hope and practical wisdom to change your relationship with fear.

#164: Mastering the Art of Networking with Dr. Ivan Misner/BNI

Building something that lasts requires patience, relationships, and a deep commitment to serving others first. In this episode of Finding the Upside, I sit down with Ivan Misner, founder and Chief Visionary Officer of BNI, the world’s largest business networking organization. Often called the father of modern networking, Ivan shares how BNI grew from a simple need for referrals into a global organization grounded in the philosophy of Givers Gain.We talk about what leadership really looks like when it’s done well, mobilizing and inspiring people rather than managing through control. Ivan and I explore why consistency beats chasing bright, shiny objects, how long-term relationships drive real business growth, and why networking, leadership, and success itself are all marathons, not sprints. Our conversation also moves into disruption and AI, and why leaders must learn to adapt without losing sight of the human side of business. Ivan shares insights from decades of global leadership, philanthropy, and teaching, reinforcing the idea that technology can support growth but people, values, and behavior ultimately determine impact. This episode is a reminder that meaningful success is built slowly, intentionally, and in alignment with who you are and how you choose to lead. #163: Leading Forward: What’s Next for Finding the Upside

As we step into 2026, leadership is being tested in new and uncomfortable ways. Systems are shifting. Expectations are changing. And the old rules for success no longer apply. In this episode, I’m sharing what’s ahead for Finding the Upside — and why the conversations we’re having now matter more than ever.Looking back at the themes that shaped 2025, one truth stands out: belonging is no longer optional. Culture is no longer secondary. And leadership is no longer defined by title, certainty, or control. This year on the podcast, we’re going deeper into Rebel Leadership — challenging outdated systems, naming what no longer works, and elevating leaders who are building cultures of trust, inclusion, and high performance in real time. We’ll explore belonging as strategy, not sentiment. We’ll talk honestly about power, identity, burnout, AI readiness, and the human cost of ignoring culture. And we’ll center the voices of women and diverse leaders who are shaping what leadership looks like next. This episode is an invitation. To lead with courage. To question inherited norms. To create spaces where people can show up fully — and perform at their best because of it.If you’re ready to lead differently — and more intentionally — Hit play and start right now. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:26] What we covered in 2025[2:27] Why Belonging is a Leadership Imperative [3:33] Why I implemented a GIVEBACK Model[5:40] The MDR Giveback Model Is About Leadership[6:56] What we’ll be talking about in 2026…… [9:13] Finding your OWN Upside[10:28] Your Call to Action for 2026Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level? #162: Giving Back Is Good Business: The Story Behind MDR Brand’s 1% Commitment

This year, I have been thinking…If I’m helping leaders build cultures where people can thrive… how can I also help my community thrive? In this episode, I’m sharing the story behind a major shift for MDR Brands, the launch of incorporating a Give Back Business Model. At the Revive & Thrive 2026 event, I announced the MDR Give Back Program, our new commitment to donate a percentage of our sales revenue every year to Feeding America and No Kid Hungry. I talk about why we made this decision, how we launched it, and yes, I break down what those donations actually translate to in real-world impact, from meals served to children supported. Our motto at MDR Brands  has always been, “Your team is hungry — we feed starving teams.” Now we’ve expanded that to, “…and we also feed people.” If you’re curious about the heart behind this program, the impact it’s already creating, and how you can be part of it, this episode will give you the inside story. #161: You’re Not ‘AI-Ready’… and That’s Exactly the Point

AI might be the biggest buzzword in business right now, but most leaders are still asking the same quiet question: Are we actually ready for this? In this episode of Finding the Upside, I break down why readiness, not technology, is the real factor determining whether AI will create value in your organization. Using current research from McKinsey, MIT, and BCG, I unpack why so many CEOs feel unprepared, yet continue launching pilots that don’t move the needle, and why treating AI as a partner, not a tool, is the mindset shift that changes everything. We also dig into a critical cultural truth: your people’s fear of job loss. Ignoring that fear creates resistance, anxiety, and stalled adoption. Addressing it creates trust, clarity, and the foundation for real transformation. If you’re a leader trying to figure out how to move from “not ready” to confidently integrating AI into the way your company works, this episode gives you the perspective and starting point you need. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[1:07] Will AI Actually Have a Positive Impact On A Company?  [5:34] Common Patterns in Failing Pilots [6:14] You Can’t Buy Readiness! [8:23] Leaders Need To Acknowledge This Fear With AI [9:01] When You Treat AI As A Partner, You Are NOT Doing THIS[12:41] Give Your People Purpose and A Path In This Next EraEpisode Show Notes  McKinsey & Company, The State of AI 2024 — 65% of organizations regularly using generative AI. #160: Expand or Be Expendable: Les Brown on AI, Reinvention and Leading Others

In today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I sit down with the icon, the legend, Les Brown for a conversation that unfolds with honesty, warmth, and a depth that only he can bring. We talk about how quickly the world is shifting, especially with technology and AI, and how important it is to stay curious, adaptable, and willing to grow. What struck me most was how aligned we were in seeing change not as something to fear, but as something that invites us to become more capable, more creative, and more intentional in our lives.Les shares stories from his early career and personal life that reveal how often our path is shaped by unexpected turns. His experiences reminded me that even the moments that feel disruptive or difficult can open the door to a direction we never imagined but were meant to walk.We also explore leadership in today’s world, how essential it is to truly understand people, to listen past the noise, and to create environments where individuals feel seen and supported. Throughout our conversation, I found myself reflecting on my own leadership journey and the realization that impact isn’t reserved for big moments; it happens in the everyday choices we make, in how we show up, and in how we treat the people around us.This exchange with Les is filled with insights about navigating life during times of uncertainty, staying grounded in who we are, and finding a meaningful way forward. #158: No Kings - The Power of Showing Up for Democracy

Across the U.S., the No Kings movement has sparked one of the largest grassroots protests in our history, reminding us that democracy belongs to the people, not to any one leader. In this episode, I’m speaking straight from the heart about something that matters deeply to me- activism in action and the power of showing up. I share why I refuse to stay silent as our values of freedom, fairness, and inclusion are challenged and why showing up, speaking up, and staying informed are more critical than ever. This isn’t about politics; it’s about protecting what America was meant to stand for.I’ll also walk you through practical ways to get involved. from engaging in local action to having the uncomfortable but necessary conversations that move us forward. Because democracy doesn’t disappear overnight… it erodes when good people stop paying attention. So, I invite you to listen in, reflect deeply, and ask yourself: What role will you play in shaping our future? #157: Freedom Under Fire: What’s Happening with the U.S. Immigration Crisis

In this episode of Finding the Upside, I take a hard look at what happens when the promises of freedom and belonging aren’t applied equally. Right now, in the United States, we’re seeing an immigration crackdown that is being carried out in ways that are inhumane, unjust, and not rooted in law, but in manufactured justifications for stripping people of their status. We’re at a moment where people who followed the rules, worked hard, and contributed to our communities are suddenly being told they don’t belong. These aren’t criminals. These are workers, students, spouses, and neighbors. This isn’t just about immigration—it’s about what kind of country we are becoming, and what it means for every one of us.What’s even more alarming is how many Americans are looking away or staying silent, not recognizing the danger this poses to our norms, our values, and our history as a nation of immigrants.I share my reflections on why we can’t look away, why silence is complicity, and how each of us has a role to play in standing up when systems fail people. If you’ve ever wondered what freedom really means—and who gets to claim it—this conversation will challenge you to think differently. This episode is both deeply personal and profoundly urgent, because if rights can be taken from them, they can be taken from any of us. My call to action is simple: don’t look away. Speak up. Ask the hard questions. If freedom only applies to a few, it isn’t freedom at all. #156: Reframing Feedback to Build Confidence

We’ve all felt that sting, the gut-punch moment when feedback doesn’t land like a compliment. But what if feedback, even the toughest kind, could actually strengthen your confidence instead of shaking it?In this episode of Finding the Upside, I share how to reframe criticism so it becomes a powerful tool for growth. Drawing from my 30+ years of coaching leaders, I am breaking down practical mindset shifts and tactical tools, including the SBI method and Radical Candor framework, that will help you give and receive feedback with clarity and courage. You will learn  how to pause and get curious before reacting, separate your work from your worth, identify patterns in feedback instead of fixating on one-offs, and extract the signal and discard the noiseWhether you’re a leader, entrepreneur, professional, or friend, navigating challenging conversations, this episode will help you transform feedback from something you fear into fuel for becoming the leader you’re meant to be. #155: The Rise of AI-Empowered Solopreneurs: How to Do More With Less

In this episode of Finding the Upside, I dive into one of the most exciting shifts happening in business right now; the rise of the AI-enabled solopreneur. No big teams, no giant budgets, just you, your hustle, and the power of AI.I share how I’ve been exploring AI in my own business and why I believe it’s becoming one of the most important skills to learn, whether you’re a founder or simply the entrepreneur of your own life. From automating repetitive tasks to marketing like you’ve got a full team behind you, AI has the potential to free up your creative energy, shorten the leap from idea to impact, and help you grow with less risk. But I also get real about the challenges. AI isn’t magic. It requires good input, a human filter, and responsibility around ethics, privacy, and creativity. It won’t replace us, but it will change the way we work, and those who lean in will have the edge.If you’ve ever wondered how to do more with less and still stay true to your values, this conversation is for you. #154: Multiple Generational Workforce - Inclusion is the Superpower

In today’s shorty episode of Finding the Upside, I’m diving into the opportunities and tensions that come with leading multigenerational teams. With five generations now working side by side, I believe inclusion isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s a business strategy that drives resilience, innovation, and trust.I share insights from research, real-life stories, and current corporate shifts to uncover why so many organizations recognize the importance of multigenerational leadership but still struggle to put it into practice. You’ll hear my take on how shared norms, tailored benefits, and creative structures like reverse mentoring can break down silos and unlock collaboration across age groups.I also get real about the recent rollbacks in corporate DEI efforts, why they’ve backfired, and what this means for leaders who want to future-proof their culture. If you’re navigating the dynamics of Gen Z to Boomers—or rethinking how to champion inclusion under pressure, this episode will help you see how bridging generational gaps is not only possible but powerful. In this special compilation episode of Finding the Upside, I am bringing together three powerful stories of resilience and transformation. You’ll hear from:Jessica Amerosa — who turned unimaginable personal loss into a mission to reclaim her health, happiness, and purpose.Miho Kanazawa — a multicultural therapist who created a safe space for belonging after witnessing cultural misunderstandings in traditional healthcare systems.Sal Rametta — who faced challenges of identity and reinvention, and found courage to build a new path forward.Though their journeys are unique, a common thread connects them: the strength to face hardship, the courage to grow, and the wisdom to transform pain into purpose.Whether you’re listening or watching, this episode will remind you that even in life’s toughest storms, there is always an upside waiting to be found. #152: The Culture You Tolerate Is The Culture You Create

Here’s one of the toughest truths about leadership that most leaders miss: The culture you tolerate is the culture you create. Culture isn’t shaped in lofty mission statements or big strategic announcements, it’s built in the small, everyday choices and behaviors that often go unnoticed. In today’s episode of Finding the Upside, I share why those little moments matter more than we realize, how silence can speak louder than words, and why letting things slide can quietly erode the very values we claim to stand for. This episode will challenge you to reflect on what you’re tolerating in your workplace, your team, or even in your own leadership and how those tolerances are shaping culture, for better or worse.Change the approach and make the move to lead with intention -- stop ignoring the behaviors that undermine your values, and start creating a culture that truly supports belonging and performance.  Let’s get into it…! Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:26] The Culture You Tolerate IS The Culture You Create[1:29] Culture Is NOT This[3:25] Audit Your Tolerance[5:37] Make Feedback Habitual[7:48] Performance Grounded In Values Creates CultureEpisode Show Notes  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeIf you’re ready to dive deeper and level up your learning beyond the Finding the Upside episodes, sign up for the Business Leaders Hub! Get access to exclusive content, resources and tools, and a community built to help you accelerate to the next level. #150: The Cost of Masking at Work: Why Unmasking Unlocks Belonging

In this episode of Finding the Upside, I’m diving into the subtle yet powerful ways we hide parts of ourselves at work—what researchers call covering or masking. From code-switching to “task masking,” these behaviors may feel like survival strategies, but they drain our energy, stifle creativity, and prevent true belonging.I am sharing surprising statistics (like the 60% of U.S. workers who admit to masking daily), and unpacking the hidden costs organizations pay when people can’t bring their authentic selves to work. She also offers practical ways leaders and teams can begin to “unmask”—through vulnerability, authentic rituals, small acts of courage, and policies that normalize differences. If you’ve ever felt like you couldn’t fully show up as yourself at work—or you’re a leader who wants to create a culture of authenticity, start listening -- we all can stop perpetuating this condition that is blocking truly optimized performance.  This episode will challenge and inspire you to rethink what thriving at work really means and power you to implement it.Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:24] The Masks We Wear To Fit In [0:53] 60% of U.S. Worker Admit to Masking[3:03] Why Code Switching Drains You[3:34] Gen Z and Job Loss Anxiety [4:58] What We Can Do About This Episode Show Notes  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeIf you’re ready to dive deeper and level up your learning beyond the Finding the Upside episodes, sign up for the Business Leaders Hub! #145: Belonging Is NOT a Buzzword

I’m taking a moment to talk about something that gets thrown around a lot but still isn’t fully understood; belonging. Let me be clear: belonging is not a buzzword. It’s not a vibe. It’s not a box to check. It’s a business strategy and a powerful one at that.In this shorty episode of Finding the Upside, I’m breaking down what belonging actually means, why it matters more than ever, and how we can build it with intention not just hope it magically appears. I’m giving you the truth: belonging is the felt sense that you can be who you truly are, without being penalized for it. And when that’s missing, the entire system suffers, performance, morale, culture, everything. You’ll learn why belonging protects against burnout, how it impacts real business metrics (yes, I brought receipts), and five concrete ways leaders can build it into the bones of their organization. Whether you lead a team or want to start a deeper conversation in your workplace, this one’s for you.Belonging isn’t about making people fit into a culture, it’s about expanding your culture to include more voices, more brilliance, and more truth. In this episode of Finding the Upside, I’m wrapping up the three-part Rebel Leader series with something every leader faces —  disruption. One of the most important things to master as a leader is reconnection, especially after there’s been some disruption. Let’s face it in —  today’s world of corporate business is unfortunately,  riddled with volatility, including reinvention, restructuring, changes in ownership and bankruptcies. When these situations occur, it is critical for leaders to ensure that they can reconnect and rebuild trust with their teams.Because here’s the truth: real leadership isn’t just about showing up strong. It’s about what you do when everything’s been shaken.Whether you're a CEO navigating turnover, a team leader post-reorg, or someone working in a fractured culture, this episode is for you. I break down how disruption fractures trust, silences voices, and breeds fatigue and what rebel leaders must do to rebuild. Reconnection isn’t soft, it’s strategic. And in a world still recovering from burnout and breakdowns, it’s also your competitive edge. Today on Finding the Upside, I’m continuing the Rebel Leader Series with PART 2: You’ve awakened the rebel—now what? But here’s the thing: the mold was never made for most of us. Especially not women, neurodivergent thinkers, people of color, or anyone who leads with heart.I am diving into the reality: the pressure to conform, the double standards that still exist, and why leading from alignment isn’t just brave, it’s strategic. You’ll learn what authentic leadership actually looks like, how to stand in your values, and why integrity is your biggest power move. #138: Burnout Is Not a Badge of Honor

What if burnout isn’t a badge of honor but a boundary that's been broken? In this shorty episode of Finding the Upside, I tackle one of the most dangerous misconceptions still thriving in our culture: that burnout is the price of ambition and a sign of success. Spoiler alert - it’s not.Burnout is a boundary violation. And it’s one we often let happen to ourselves.I dive into how our hustle-driven, always-on culture, especially in corporate America, has glorified exhaustion and blurred the lines between dedication and self-betrayal. Drawing from both personal experiences and brain science, I break down the hidden costs of ignoring your limits, the red flags that signal boundary erosion, and why chronic stress has become a disguised “norm.”You’ll walk away with actionable strategies, like conducting a “resentment audit” and reframing boundary-setting as a commitment to greater presence and productivity—at work and at home. Plus, I offer real-world examples of how leaders and team members alike can model boundary-respecting cultures that actually boost performance and retention. This episode is a wake-up call for anyone caught in the burnout cycle, and a reminder that self-respect starts with what you say “no” to. #137: How to Find the Work That Answers Your WHY with TJ Bennett

What if the key to transforming your work and your life starts with one bold question: “What if I don’t have to sacrifice who I am to succeed?”In this episode of Finding the Upside, I sit down with a purpose-driven coach and fellow rebel-with-a-cause, TJ Bennett—creator of The DeSuckify Work podcast and newsletter, and a man on a mission to help people rediscover joy and meaning in their work.TJ shares his own evolution from 25 years in advertising to his leap into coaching, where he now guides individuals and organizations to align work with their purpose, finding their why. We discuss the realities of walking away from what’s familiar to pursue what’s authentic, and the fears that come with untethering from steady paychecks and unfulfilling career paths. This episode is a deep dive into the culture of work - what's broken, what’s possible, and how values-based leadership can radically shift both company culture and individual fulfillment. We unpack everything from the myth of “stability” to how Gen Z is showing up unapologetically curious and values-driven. We also challenge traditional hiring models, discuss why performative company values are a liability, and offer practical insight into helping the next generation (and ourselves) define purpose - not by title, but by strength, impact, and joy.Whether you're a leader trying to achieve cultural change, a professional feeling out of alignment, or someone simply craving more authenticity in the workplace - this conversation will light a fire under your seat and remind us: Work shouldn’t require us to trade our soul for a salary. This is also a call to corporate leaders defining these environments to do a better job -- to start normalizing the power of showing up whole, living your values out loud, and finding the upside in a new way of working. Have you ever felt like you weren’t enough—despite everything you’ve achieved? In this episode of Finding the Upside, we’re diving into a deeply human experience: the journey from questioning your worth to fully recognizing and embracing your expertise. I explore the powerful shift from feeling “not enough” to recognizing and embracing the knowledge and value we already possess. #135: The Power of the Giveback Model

Right now purpose and impact are becoming non-negotiable and the companies that thrive are those that give more than they take. In this episode of Finding the Upside, I dive into the power of the giveback model. a business approach that embeds contribution into the very fabric of a company’s mission, not just as a side effort, but as a strategic pillar. From brands like TOMS, Patagonia and Ben & Jerry’s, we explore how organizations are shifting from traditional ROI to Return on Impact and why this model creates deeper employee engagement, stronger communities, and fiercely loyal customers. But this episode isn’t just for business owners. It’s for anyone who spends, shops, or supports. And I share an exciting teaser about the upcoming MDR Brands Giveback Program. Our new initiative launching this June that will be announced at the Revive and Thrive Empowerment Summit. Supporting causes close to my heart, this program is our commitment to making business better, on purpose. Details about the Revive and Thrive Empowerment Summit can be found in the show notes. If you’ve ever asked, can businesses and consumers really make a difference - the answer is yes. #134: ONE TOUGH CHICK: The Power of Purpose with Tara Gilvar

Sometimes the most powerful transformations start with a simple question: “Remember who you wanted to be?” In this episode of Finding the Upside, I sit down with ONE TOUGH CHICK, Tara Gilvar, founder of B.I.G (Believe, Inspire, Grow), a global women’s empowerment organization that started in her living room with one email and a bumper sticker.Tara shares her personal journey from political campaigns and advertising boardrooms to suburban motherhood, where she wrestled with identity, purpose, and the economic realities so many women face when choosing between career and childcare. What began as a quest to reconnect with her own ambition quickly grew into a powerful movement that has touched over 14,000 women across the globe. We dive deep into how B.I.G helps women reclaim their voice, rediscover their purpose, and launch businesses, dreams, and legacies—often from a place of uncertainty or loss. Tara opens up about the real-life stories of women who found not just connection and confidence, but healing, courage, and even new life missions through this powerful sisterhood. This conversation is about more than empowering women. It’s about systemic challenges, the brilliance sidelined by outdated structures in our country, and the cultural shift required to make space for women to fully thrive. From overcoming tragedy to inspiring policy change, Tara’s shares stories that illustrate how grassroots leadership and authentic community can change lives—one woman at a time.Tune in for an honest, uplifting, and deeply inspiring conversation that will spark your own sense of possibility and remind you: there is power in gathering, in giving, and in remembering who you were always meant to be.Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[2:09] How Tara Went From Politics to Leading a Global Network[12:53] The Bumper Sticker That Created B.I.G. [22:44] The Brilliance That Sits On The Sidelines[28:45] B.I.G.’s Mission is THIS[35:35] HOW You Can Connect with Tara[46:16] As Many People As You Impact, They Are Also Impacting OthersEpisode Show Notes  Tara Gilvar | InstagramTara Gilvar | FacebookTara Gilvar | LinkedInB.I.G. #133: Why Your Voice Matters—Now More Than Ever with Tricia Brouk

In leadership and in life our greatest impact often comes when we dare to speak from the heart, even when it's uncomfortable. In this episode of Finding the Upside, I sit down with Tricia Brouk, award-winning director, former professional dancer, and founder of The Big Talk Academy, to explore what it truly means to be an influential voice in today's divided world. From her early days dancing on New York’s biggest stages to her current focus, coaching thought leaders and TEDx speakers, Tricia shares the powerful story of how she found her purpose not in being center stage—but in helping others own theirs. We dive into her journey of writing The Influential Voice, a book born not from market demand, but from a deeply personal response to injustice and a longing to unite humanity through dignified discourse.Together, we unpack what it means to create belonging, build cultures rooted in empathy, and lead teams where every voice is heard. Tricia offers profound insight into the “trust recession” facing business and leaders today and the kind of capital that really counts: trust, relationship, and attention. Whether you're building a business, raising a family, leading an impact in your community or simply watching from the sidelines, this conversation will challenge you to rethink where your influence lies—and how you choose to use it.Tune in for a heartfelt and deeply human conversation that will inspire you to lead with love, speak with intention, and remind you that your voice—exactly as it is—matters more than ever. Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[2:21] Trisha Brouk’s Journey[8:55] What It Means To Be An Influential Voice[30:41] Tricia Brouk’s Big Talk Academy[37:05] HOW You Can Model What’s Possible For Communities[49:02] NO ONE Can Learn From Someone They Don’t TRUST[55:34] HOW You Can Connect with TriciaEpisode Show Notes  Tricia Brouk | InstagramTricia Brouk | FacebookTricia Brouk | LinkedInTricia Brouk | WebsiteTricia Brouk’s FREE on demand masterclass, COMMAND ANY ROOM.Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Instagram Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | Facebook  Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | LinkedIn Maria DeLorenzis Reyes | WebsiteMaria DeLorenzis Reyes | YoutubeWant to scale your business to the next level? #132: Honoring Women: Progress Isn’t Permanent - It Needs To Be Protected

Today, I want to slow things down and talk about something that’s been on my mind—legacy. Specifically, the legacy of women. As Women’s History Month wrapped up, I found myself returning to this phrase we hear often: standing on the shoulders of giants. But how often do we really feel that? Do we pause long enough to name the women whose strength made our own possible? In this episode of Finding the Upside, we’re honoring both the trailblazers in the spotlight and the everyday giants whose names may never appear in history books—our grandmothers, our mothers, our teachers, our friends. The ones who worked two jobs, spoke life into our potential, and reminded us we were strong when we felt anything but.But this conversation isn’t just about looking back. It’s about what we do now. Because here in 2025, some of the progress we’ve fought so hard for is under threat—whether it’s reproductive rights, leadership representation, or simply being seen and heard in rooms where decisions are made.Progress isn’t permanent. It has to be protected. So let’s talk about what it really means to honor the women who came before us—not with a quote on social media once a year, but in how we live, lead, and lift each other up. If you’ve ever asked yourself, What kind of legacy am I leaving?—this one’s for you.*To subscribe to the Personal Reflections Emails mentioned in this episode CLICK HERE and sign up at the bottom of the page.Show Notes: *MDR Please see my comment down in the transcript* Here’s a quick look at what you can expect from today’s episode…[0:30] The Legacy of Women[1:57] Highlighting The Women Who Paved the Way[4:24]Progress is NOT Permanent.
