Food For Thought: How Universal Free Meals Benefit Us All
by Cynthia Melendez
This is a show about the impact of Universal Free Meals in K-12 public schools. What are the benefits, the downside, and everything in between. In 2021 California passed the Universal Free Meals Program for K-12 schools, this program allows for school-aged children to receive a free breakfast and lunch during the school day, and so far the results have been incredible. So the question is, how does California serve as a model for the rest of the United States to implement Universal Free Meals and how will it benefit the education system in the long run.

How Universal Meals Benefit Us All
Food For Thought is a show about how the implementation of Universal School Meals countrywide benefits all Americans. I provide research, data, and personal anecdotes that support the idea that providing two free school meals, breakfast and lunch to all students, will lead to an improved education system, alleviate food insecurity in low-income/minority students and will improve behavior as well as instances of absenteeism.
