Is now the right time to invest?

In this episode of Freedonomix, Cameron speaks with IWP Senior Financial Adviser Lynn Zhao to unpack one of the most common questions investors ask: Is now the right time to invest? Rather than focusing on market predictions, this conversation explores what really matters — your goals, your time frame, your ability to tolerate volatility, and the importance of having a disciplined long-term plan. Cam and Lynn discuss why trying to pick the perfect time to invest can be unhelpful, how fear and hesitation can keep people stuck in cash, and why evidence-based investing is often less about timing the market and more about spending meaningful time in it. It's a thoughtful discussion about behaviour, perspective, and making investment decisions with clarity and confidence. The Psychology of Money with Cameron and Chris

In this episode of Freedomonix, Cameron speaks with Chris Haggart - Partner and Financial Adviser about the psychology of wealth and the search for meaning beyond a paycheck. Drawing on themes from Chris's articles, they explore why financial decisions are rarely just about money, how people often link self-worth to income and status, and why true wealth may be better measured by freedom, alignment and peace of mind. They also discuss the importance of understanding the "why behind the why" in financial advice, and how a life-first approach can help people make better decisions with the resources they already have. It is a reflective conversation about money, identity, contentment and what really matters over the long term. Death Tax by Stealth

In the latest episode of our video podcast, Cameron and Shane unpack Shane's recent blog article, "Death Tax by Stealth." Unfortunately, in Australia if you die with money in your super and you want to pass this through to your adult children, then the taxable component of your super fund is taxed at 15% plus the medicare levy (2%).  In this episode, Cameron and Shane talk through the ways to reduce this tax to ensure that your children receive more of your estate rather than the ATO.  Read the full article here: Death Tax by Stealth  Access the videocast here: IWP - Death Tax by Stealth April 2026 DISCLAIMER: This podcast contains general advice which does not consider your particular circumstances. IWP - Market Update - April 2026

Link to IWP's April 2026 Update (PDF) Monthly Market and Economic Chart Pack  Markets have experienced a volatile and challenging period over the past month, with both equity and bond markets declining as geopolitical developments—particularly escalating conflict involving Iran—drive renewed uncertainty, rising oil prices, and inflation concerns. In this month's discussion, Shane and Chris unpack the key issues influencing markets and portfolio positioning:  • Equity markets declined by approximately 7% in March, marking one of the weakest months since 2022, as ongoing conflict and uncertainty weighed heavily on investor sentiment • Escalating tensions involving Iran and the United States have increased geopolitical risk, with unpredictable leadership dynamics contributing to heightened market volatility  • Oil prices have risen above $100 per barrel amid supply disruptions and concerns around key shipping routes, reinforcing global inflationary pressures • Rising fuel and energy costs are impacting both households and businesses, with discretionary spending expected to weaken as essential expenses increase • Inflation remains a key concern globally, particularly in Australia where price pressures were already elevated, increasing the likelihood of delayed or additional interest rate hikes  • Historically, markets react sharply in the early stages of conflict before entering a stabilisation phase, with current conditions suggesting we may be transitioning beyond the initial shock period • Consumer sentiment has softened, with individuals and businesses delaying decision-making amid ongoing uncertainty  • While short-term volatility has been significant, broader market performance over the past 12 months remains relatively resilient, highlighting the importance of maintaining perspective  • Portfolio strategy remains unchanged, with a continued focus on diversification across sectors, asset classes, and geographies to manage risk in unpredictable environments • Attempting to time markets or make short-term tactical shifts remains highly challenging, particularly given rapidly changing geopolitical developments and market reactions Overall, the message remains consistent: remain disciplined, avoid reacting to short-term volatility, and stay focused on long-term investment fundamentals and the benefits of a well-diversified portfolio. IWP - Global Investment Outlook 2026

Link to IWP's Global Investment Outlook (PDF) Global markets have delivered strong returns over the past year, supported by resilient economic growth and continued momentum in AI-driven investment, while policy uncertainty and inflation risks remain key watchpoints heading into 2026. In this month's update, Cam and Naasha from Willis Towers Watson review portfolio performance and outline the global economic and asset class outlook: Investment portfolios have continued to outperform their long-term objectives across defensive, balanced and growth strategies, reflecting disciplined asset allocation and low-cost implementation  U.S. growth remained more resilient than expected in 2025, driven by strong consumer spending and significant AI-related capital investment, with 2026 growth forecast to remain above trend  Inflation in the U.S. is expected to stay elevated but manageable, with only limited scope for further rate cuts as the Federal Reserve balances growth and price pressure European growth has also proven steady despite trade tensions, with fiscal expansion and stable inflation supporting a constructive outlook for equities In Australia, economic growth has improved, though inflation has re-accelerated, prompting a recent rate hike; the RBA is expected to remain cautious and data-dependent in 2026 China met its 5% growth target in 2025, successfully navigating trade tensions, with technology investment and domestic consumption key to its 2026 outlook Global equities remain the preferred asset class in the short term, supported by earnings growth, fiscal expansion and ongoing AI investment, while government bonds continue to play an important diversification role Credit markets appear less attractive in the near term due to tight spreads, and currency movements have seen the Australian dollar strengthen against a softer U.S. dollar Overall, the message remains clear: despite heightened policy and geopolitical uncertainty, markets have shown resilience. A diversified, long-term investment approach remains central to navigating volatility while positioning portfolios for continued global growth opportunities. IWP - Market Update - January 2026

Link to IWP's January 2026 Update (PDF) Market Update   Markets have started the year on a steadier footing, with equity markets rebounding after a softer end to last year, while geopolitical developments add a layer of uncertainty without materially disrupting markets so far. In this month's discussion, Andrew and Chris unpack the key issues influencing markets and portfolio positioning:  Equity markets have opened the year reasonably well following a weaker finish to last year, with January activity picking up as investors return from the holiday period  Geopolitical tensions involving Venezuela and Iran, alongside renewed unpredictability from Donald Trump, have increased headline risk, though market impacts have remained relatively muted to date  Oil prices remain a key watchpoint, with any escalation in global tensions potentially feeding through to higher energy costs and renewed inflation pressures In Australia, inflation has eased from prior peaks but remains above the RBA's target range, while stronger-than-expected consumer spending suggests parts of the economy may be reheating The RBA faces a finely balanced outlook, with improving sentiment and spending weighed against ongoing cost-of-living pressures and the risk of further inflation persistence In the U.S., attention is turning to tensions between Trump and the Federal Reserve, including scrutiny of Jerome Powell, raising questions around central bank independence and future rate policy Portfolio strategy remains unchanged, with no short-term adjustments in response to current news flow, reinforcing a disciplined, long-term investment approach  Diversification and broad market exposure continue to be emphasised, with expectations that returns will broaden beyond a small group of high-profile tech and AI stocks over time Overall, the message remains consistent: stay the course, avoid reacting to short-term noise, and remain focused on long-term fundamentals and diversified portfolio construction. IWP - Market Update - November 2025

Link to IWP's October 2025 Update (PDF) Monthly Market Update   Markets have experienced a modest pullback this month as uncertainty rises across global economies, though underlying fundamentals remain resilient.  In this month's discussion, Chris and Brigitta explore the key themes shaping markets and investor sentiment: • After a strong six-month run, equity markets have softened slightly, reflecting mixed economic signals and increased caution from investors • The RBA has kept the cash rate on hold, with inflation edging higher and labour-market conditions needing to soften further before any additional rate cuts are likely • Spring property activity has picked up, supported by improved sentiment and the government's 5% deposit scheme for first-home buyers • In the U.S., the recent government shutdown has ended, but delayed data releases and reduced consumer confidence have added short-term uncertainty • Global tariff tensions remain elevated, with the U.S. and China maintaining a fragile truce that continues to influence market volatility • AI-related stocks, including Nvidia and the broader "AI seven," have delivered strong returns but now face questions around high valuations and heavy investment spending • Despite short-term movements, diversified portfolios continue to be well positioned, with long-term structural themes guiding investment decisions rather than short-term market noise As always, we highlight the importance of staying diversified, disciplined, and focused on long-term outcomes.   Should you prefer this in video form, please head to IWP YouTube

Proposed changes to the Division 296 Tax to Super

In this episode, we dive into the major revisions recently announced for the proposed Division 296 tax — the government's plan to impose extra tax on earnings from very large superannuation balances. Under the revamped proposal: Unrealised gains are out: only realised earnings (interest, dividends, rent, and capital gains when sold) will be taxed — removing a thorny compliance issue.  It introduces a tiered tax structure rather than a flat surcharge: • Balances between $3 million and $10 million: taxed at an effective 30 % (i.e. 15 % base + 15 % additional) • Balances above $10 million: taxed at 40 %  Thresholds will be indexed to inflation to avoid "bracket creep." The start date is delayed from 1 July 2025 to 1 July 2026, giving more time for planning.  The first assessments will be based on totals at 30 June 2027, with implementation in the 2027-28 financial year. We also unpack what these changes mean in practice — the benefits (like reduced complexity and lower risk of forced sales), the potential downsides for ultra-high net worth holders, and the strategic moves individuals and advisers should be considering now. IWP - Market Update - July 2025

Link to IWP's July 2025 Update (PDF) https://tinyurl.run/PHjq3Z With geopolitical tensions easing, where are the markets turning their attention now? Our July Market and Economic Update breaks down the key shifts we're seeing.   This month's key points:   A Calmer Global Outlook: Easing geopolitical tensions and a stable ceasefire between Israel and Iran have provided a supportive backdrop for markets. This sentiment has helped drive global equities higher, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 approaching their all-time highs.   Shift to Domestic Policy: As global risks subside, market focus is pivoting to US domestic policy. Federal Reserve Chair Powell's recent comments have reinforced expectations for interest rate cuts later this year.   Policy in Focus: In Washington, President Trump is advancing the US tax and spending bill, which is expected to remove or weaken the "revenge tax" on non-US investors—a welcome development for the market. Progress on trade negotiations ahead of a July 9 deadline has also improved sentiment.   Overall, the reduction in geopolitical risk premiums has led to lower oil prices and low market volatility. While the outlook is positive, rising US inflation remains a key factor that could potentially delay policy easing.   Should you prefer this in video form, please head to https://youtu.be/CnpIMJnWqUI?si=wbnMXKP67xOfY9xZ

IWP Strategic Update - Div 296 Tax ($3M Super Tax)

IWP Strategic Update (PDF) - https://tinyurl.com/22qgo83x The proposed Division 296 tax introduces a significant change for superannuation balances over $3 million. With a proposed start date of 1 July 2025, this legislation will apply an additional 15% tax on earnings related to balances above the threshold. Crucially, this tax is calculated on both realised and unrealised gains, creating potential liquidity challenges for assets like property within an SMSF. Given the start date may be retrospective, it is vital to understand the implications now. In this video, Cameron and Chris provide a detailed analysis of the proposed law. We walk through worked examples, discuss the impact on asset allocation, and outline key strategic considerations for clients.  Shoudl you wish to watch the full video - please head to YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRcEjegnwJk #Division296 #Superannuation #TaxLaw #FinancialPlanning #SMSF #WealthManagement #AustralianTax Disclaimer: This content is for informational purposes only and does not constitute financial advice.

US GDP growth is expected to be weak but avoid recession, though policy uncertainty could slow business investment. Tariffs are predicted to lead to weaker growth and higher prices in the US. Cam and Chris then reviewed IWP's Flagship portfolio - Lifestyle Model 4 - showing a 1-year return of 11.88%, outperforming its index. Link to IWP's May 2025 Update (PDF) - IWP Market Update Cameron and Lynn recently discussed several key economic and market developments in our latest YouTube video, and we have highlighted the main points for you: US Trade and Policy Uncertainty: Ongoing trade tensions and political developments continue to create a degree of uncertainty in the global economic outlook.   Market Volatility and Economic Recovery: We observed significant market swings in April, influenced by a combination of mixed corporate earnings reports, evolving political concerns, and central bank policy announcements. Encouragingly, markets showed a notable rebound towards the end of the month.   Australian Economic Resilience: Despite global headwinds, the Australian economy continues to demonstrate resilience, with inflation remaining under control and expectations of potential interest rate cuts in the future. Australia's relative insulation offers a degree of stability in the current environment.   Long-Term Investing: As always, we emphasize the importance of maintaining a long-term perspective in your investment strategy. This includes staying invested through market fluctuations, avoiding attempts to time the market, ensuring adequate diversification across your portfolio, and regularly reassessing your risk tolerance in line with your financial goals.   As always, please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or would like to discuss your portfolio in light of these developments.   Should you prefer this in video form, please head to YouTube

Link to IWP's August Update (PDF) - IWP Monthly Update - August 2024 During the first few days of August there have been several significant economic updates:           The Bank of England began its rate-cutting cycle by cutting the official rate by 0.25%           The Bank of Japan raised rates (to 0.25%) and announced a reduction in its bond buying program.           Australian core inflation fell marginally, and;           There was a softer than expected US jobs report. Whilst economic growth data has been choppy recently, in aggregate it has remained consistent with a moderate, if slowing, global expansion.
