Stargate Archives – Once Upon A Time Skin Deep

Skin Deep Well here we are again, the first piece of new content for the archive site and it’s going to be a look at Once Upon A Time and more specifically a Robert Carlyle episode from the first season entitled “Skin Deep”. In this episode Rumplestiltskin meets Belle for the first time after agreeing to end her fathers war with the trolls. Meanwhile in Storybrooke Mr Gold is imposing his own business ethics on Moe (Belle’s father) after he failed to repay a loan. David and Mary Margaret continue to their dance unaware of who they once were and Emma now the sheriff investigates a robbery of Gold’s home, a very important item has been stolen. Skin Deep is a very rewarding look into this show’s version of Beauty and the Beast, there are some wonderful moments between Rumplestiltskin and Belle never more so after the Queen’s interference which leads to some home truths being dished out to the dark one. Our thanks to No Spoilers Dearie on twitter who helped us to decide what we were going to do for a first piece of new content for this site and while it’s not a full Once Upon A Time podcast we hope this is acceptable. Our next episode will probably be taking a look at Children Of The Gods (Final Cut), no schedule for release but it has been recorded so while we won’t be sticking to a weekly release we hope at least to maintain regular new content for the immediate future. The primary site for Gatecast will now be switching to Stargate Archives, new content will be posted there first and the site has it’s own own itunes entry if you care to subscribe. A few days after posting new content on that site it will be mirrored here until this site is permanently closed when the hosting runs out, we won’t be paying to keep two sites running and after this one was hacked the broken links are too much trouble to fix IMDB Robert Carlyle Emilie de Ravin Stargate Archives The post Stargate Archives – Once Upon A Time Skin Deep appeared first on Gatecast.

Gatecast Stargate Universe Wrap Up Show

Stargate Universe Wrap Up Show Welcome to the roundtable discussion of the two seasons of Stargate Universe in this wrap up show. Joining Mike and Alan are Thomas, Ian and Steve along with additional material from the co-founder of the podcast, Scott. On the show we discuss Stargate Universe in general and answer a few more specific questions in we hope an entertaining fashion. We also have the results of the favourite episode listener poll which we ran for a week and while we didn’t get the number of votes when compared to our other polls (which ran for around a month) we got enough to give us an idea of how the show fared. SGU Poll Results… Gauntlet Twin Destinies & Air (1,2 & 3) We would like to thank everyone that has contributed to the Gatecast podcast for these past few years but there have been so many so for now we want to have a special mention for the three guys who joined us over skype to wrap our coverage of Stargate Universe and also to Brad for the feedback over the years and dedication in getting up so early so often to talk with us, alas scheduling prevented him from joining in directly. We also want to thank Holly for the feedback over on our Facebook group and to Dan for the email along with our continued thanks to every follower on our social media, you’ve all made this journey worthwhile. In particular those that have joined us on the show to talk Stargate are going to get named (but not shamed) and while I am pretty sure this is a complete list if I have forgotten anyone make sure I know so I can correct any mistake, I would hate to have missed a guest while scanning through 350 episodes. Gatecast 350 SGU Gauntlet

Gauntlet Well this is Gauntlet the season and alas the series finale of Stargate Universe and while the episode was not specifically written as a series finale it actually works very well and by some miracle doesn’t annoy the viewer with a slap in the face cliffhanger. Of course as we know the final scenes of the series leaves everyone hanging by a thread but it’s done with such style and care you really do not mind, at least not too much. The Drones once again are pressuring Destiny and continue to block every single useful star in the immediate flight path of the ship, it’s simply impractical for Destiny to seek out resource rich worlds off the path as laid down by the seed ships so the question is asked what can they do. Eli comes up with another solution, not a good one but it has the benefit of not only preventing further conflict with the drones but maximising the current resources of the ship. His solution is to make use of the recently activates stasis pods, those combined with an energy saving FTL cruise would allow the Destiny to leave this current galaxy and bypass the are of space controlled by the drones. The margin of error is very small and the decision to implement this option would have to be taken very quickly, if Destiny’s power reserves dropped too low while in FTL the ship would be stranded in the intergalactic void with hundreds of years of sublight flight ahead of it. Some of the crew are give the option of a last visit to Earth but a minor hiccup almost derails the endeavour as some of the pods are damaged and a certain mineral is needed to enact a repair. Activating the gate will of course draw a drone command ship to their location but they lay down a diversion with one of the shuttles broadcasting a powerful signal to fool the drones, when they take the bait the shuttle does a kamikaze run and destroys the command ship and Destiny gates to the planet and collects the required material. The pods now working soon fill up and eventually only Eli, Rush and Young are left, it is then they discover one of the final three working pods is still faulty. Young doesn’t trust Rush to not risk the ship if he was unable to fix the pod after he and Eli went into stasis so Young decides to sacrifice himself but Eli makes his stand, he is confident he can fix the pod in the time allowed and will not hesitate to put the ship and crew ahead of himself if he fails in his task. Young and Rush bid their farewells in a manner which truly reflect how they feel about this young man who came onboard as a bit of a bad joke but through adversary has matured into a man that could one day lead others. Gauntlet was an impressive episode, there is as much action as you would expect from a modern scifi series and far more drama and character work than most, par for the course with Universe but this being the finale really brings it all home. It was quite an achievement to pack so much into this last “hour” of television without sacrificing so many quiet dialogue driven scenes between characters many of which showed how far these people had come. The final situation/obstacle that Eli, Rush and Young had to deal with also summed up the show to perfection, distrust, compromise and acceptance all brought together and allowing one of the youngest members of the crew and one never intended to be part of Icarus to commit himself and his life on his skill and a simple choice to protect his friends even if it meant his life. I’m already looking forward to watching Universe again in the near future, I really am surprised how much I have enjoyed the series after it had kinda been moved into the “will watch again one day” category whereas SG1 and Atlantis were always ready to go whenever I felt like it. The production levels, CGI and writing were all top notch and even now a few years down the line there is nothing that surpasses the quality of this series, equals yes in the case of say The Expanse but does not eclipse. Our thanks to Thomas for joining us for Gauntlet and next week we are going to have a roundtable discussion on Stargate Universe as a whole along with the results of the quick favourite episode poll we ran for a few days. Gatecast 349 SGU Blockade

Blockade The Drones continue to harass the Destiny but change tactics and send the command ships to local star systems to blockade the very source of energy that Destiny requires to function. As we have seen the Destiny is capable of holding her own against a single command ship and drones but each time she loses a little ground and even after a successful refueling an out of the box solution is required. Eli proposes to use a star that is way outside of the specifications and thus unlikely to be guarded, the risk is that the shields would be unable to protect the ship and crew. The decision is made to gate all but two of the crew to a nearby planet as Rush and Eli fly the ship through the star, Dr Park also asks to stay to continue the harvesting of medicinals as the radiation and heat will destroy them. On the planet the crew find a dead civilisation no doubt sprung from the seed of Novus at some point in the past, evidence indicates that the drones were responsible but while they are there teams fan out to see if anything useful could be uncovered. Alas dormant drones detect the gate use and radio chatter and pin down the teams in the city, a firefight ensues and eventually they have no option but to gate back to Destiny with the hope she has successfully navigated the star. They are fortunate, the ship survived by Park had been trapped in the biodome which failed, she survived but suffered extensive eye damage and they know the drones will not be so easy to trick a second time. Blockade is a perfect episode to bridge the recent drone episodes, once again it underlines how powerful they are in this part of the galaxy and that they are not simply reacting to an enemy presence rather they have a central intelligence directing them tactically. Removing the Destiny from her normal source of power demonstrates both the size of the done fleet but their big picture thinking. The crew got lucky by gating to a viable world but Destiny is not up to repeating this close call with a blue giant O-type star which begs the question what now… My gratitude to Steve and Ian for joining me this week as Alan had family concerns to deal with, we had a great conversation. Gatecast 348 SGU Epilogue

Epilogue Miles joins us for Epilogue the second part of the two parter which expands upon the bread crumbs offered up from Twin Destinies. The Destiny has for now broke contact with the drones and has travelled to Novus in the hope of discovering why the settlement lost contact. Initial survey clearly shows a world in the middle of a “nuclear winter” as ash falls gently and global temperatures too low. Yaozu leads the group to the entrance to a huge bunker and they use the main gun to tear open the doors, venturing inside they find the complex has power and thirty levels down they access the planets database complete with all kino footage dating back to the founding of Novus. The lives of well themselves play out and much is revealed of the first few years on Novus as people die, couples have children, the beginnings of the split in ideology and a society which is visually growing and developing. They also learn that a black hole is indeed responsible for the growing instability of the planet as the core gets more and more active and volcanic fissures continue to expand including one directly under this city. Near the end though the two nations on this world stepped back from the edge and as in the beginning joined forces and built a number of generation ships to allow much of the population to escape, they are sublight and aimed for the various settlements but the people of Novus and humanity has not died out in this galaxy. Time is critical and they begin to upload the huge database to Destiny, Rush discovers a solution to the ship’s air filtration systems and as the complex begins to collapse the fight for survival leading to Varro being critically injured whilst saving TJ. Epilogue is a stunning episode and totally exploits the groundwork provided by Twin Destinies and Common Descent. The revelations of a life not led were moving and at times emotional from the loss of Dale through to the birth of his namesake, the many other births and of course the path that TJ will have to travel. Oh yes who could also forget Brody and those damn kids. As the season draws to a close we know there was never going to be any follow up given that the people from Novus were bound to this galaxy as Destiny travelled on but perhaps we would have found one or two characters were reintroduced if indeed we had gotten a third season. Our continued thanks to Miles for guesting on the podcast, it was a good evening discussing two of the best episodes of Stargate Universe. Alan will be back next week along with Ian for our discussion on Blockade and as with Destiny our journey is coming to a close. Gatecast 347 SGU Common Descent

Common Descent The crew of the Destiny come across a group of humans descended from well the crew of the Destiny in the episode Common Descent. The air scrubbers that were retrofitted when the Icarus group first boarded the ship are failing and the search begins for more lime or similar material to help clean the air. They gate to a planet and meet two English speaking young people who recognise both Scott and Greer and reveal that they are the latest generation from the crew of Destiny who found themselves stranded 2000 years in the past after attempting the nice chevron dialing within the star as told in Twin Destinies. The news of these spreads quickly with Eli, Chloe and Camille venturing to the planet where they greet one of the settlements elders named “Yaozu” who recites a verse very familiar to Camille and in its native language. The crew then learn about the lives of those who fled the Destiny never to return thanks to the extensive use of Kinos and the ability to maintain the integrity of the day to day records of their society. No doubt Eli with his long held belief that everything should be documented would aid this young society in the centuries to come allowing for more rapid development and no corruption of historical figures and events. This settlement has lost contact with their homeworld “Novus” which was experiencing geologic issues which they were beginning to believe were being caused by a small black hole passing by the solar system, with no gate access to resources the settlement is dying but Young refuses to take them back to Novus as Destiny itself even with limited repairs would be unable to handle the extra personnel, the the drones attack. The Destiny is battling the drones and taking people off the planet as it too comes under fire but when the Stargate is damaged the Destiny jumps into hyperspace and abandons a number of her own crew along with the last of the Novus citizens. Eli manages to get a message to the Destiny using the gate control subsystems and the Destiny swings back and transports the people to Novus. Unfortunately the planet is wrapped in extensive cloud cover with low temperatures and particulates in the atmosphere. The cities are intact though but no life is found and it is believed a major volcanic eruption drove the planet into nuclear winter and decimated the population of Novus. Common Descent is a very entertaining episode which really makes the most of Twin Destinies at a time when there was no indication those eighty or so people who were lost in a wormhole would ever be heard of again. The producers and writers however have created a master stroke in exploiting a time travel narrative in a less than usual way with very positive results and far more to come in the second part of this story Epilogue. Our thanks to Miles for joining us this week, he’ll return for Epilogue and continued thanks to Brad for the feedback for The Hunt. Gatecast 346 SGU The Hunt

The Hunt In this weeks episode The Hunt a small opportunity to visit a welcoming world full of resources and wildlife, a deer like animal is sighted and Greer has a hankering for a good old fashioned BBQ but is unable to pull the trigger, it seems his recent emotional roller coaster has taken it’s toll on the hell for leather soldier. Something seems to spook the “deer” and then Scott is attacked and again Greer fails to fire which allows the “beast” to rampage through the nearby camp causing some injuries. TJ and Cpl Reynolds are missing and they are believed to have been taken by this huge predator, they have little look tracking the beast until Varro and the remaining Lucian Alliance soldiers offer their services being more familiar with the more day to day requirements of living off the land. The tracking party are however led into a trap clearly indicating this “beast” has intelligence and with more injuries Varro and Greer go on alone eventually locating TJ and using explosives distract the alien pack reach the cave. They find TJ and Reynolds along with this intelligent creature and Greer lowers his weapon in the belief that the animal recognises the threat and the removal of said threat, the animal backs off and lets them all leave. Meanwhile Brody has been locked in a stasis pod they recently found, Eli thinks he screwed up but it was actually Rush who was proving a point when it comes to jumping feet first into alien technology, a day later Brody is released in time for the Space Deer BBQ hosted by Becker with help from Varro who is now even closer to TJ than before. The Hunt is pretty much as standalone episode no doubt written and prepared long before they knew of the shows cancellation so while it may seen like a wasted opportunity it’s understandable why the show was willing to tell this sort of story. The cutting of some TJ backstory doesn’t help but we do get some good character development between Varro and TJ and it’s a shame he ends up being the only Lucian soldier left on the ship, I would have liked to have seen more of Tasia played by Kyra Zagorsky who also appeared in the Atlantis episode Reunion. The CGI and location shooting were top notch as you would expect with this production and the issues Greer was dealing with give a lot more weight to his character. The “b” plot as it were dealing with the reveal of the stasis pods and Brody getting trapped in one provided the levity the episode needed and if for nothing else watching Rush smile as his made the younger scientists dance to his tune was a delight. Our thanks to Ian for taking the time to join us over skype to talk Stargate and he’ll be back for the episode Blockade. Gatecast 345 SGU Seizure

Seizure The crew of the Destiny have to deal with a holidaying Rush in the episode Seizure as well as fall out from events on the planet Langara. Homeworld command are in negotiations with Langara to use their world as a staging post for dialing Destiny thanks to the veins of Naquadria that run through the planet. Naturally given two worlds have already been destroyed the Langarans are not overly enthusiastic and are also under pressure from the Lucian Alliance. The military led by Telford favour direct action as they believe the Langarans are already dealing with the Alliance and so a plan is formulated by Dr McKay and put into action. On board Destiny Rush is having a day off and is using the chair to send his consciousness into the ship’s computer where his and Amanda’s bits and bytes can overwrite each other with abandon. When it’s time to leave Rush finds himself trapped in the computer with no control over the programme currently running and Ginn is desperate to get critical information to Eli before the system breaks down with catastrophic results. Seizure is an entertaining episode with a fantastic guest star including Victor Garber, Robert Picardo and of course David Hewlett. It’s a pity Jack only gets a mention but the screen is certainly full of quality acting and some excellent location work in a former power plant (now a museum) which would be familiar to many a Canadian sourced tv series shown over the last decade. It was interesting to see how confrontational Homeworld was based on the belief the Langarans were double dealing and that based on very suspect intelligence gleaned from encrypted communications. In many ways it’s not a side of the SGC we want and leans more towards the dark days of the NID or maybe just the desperation by one or two individuals pushing an agenda regardless of the consequences. Helen Shaver did a magnificent job directing her first Stargate episode especially given the complexity imposed by characters who had backgrounds on SG1 and Atlantis. Thanks to Brad for joining us on this weeks episode and for sending in the voicemail feedback for last weeks episode “Hope”. Gatecast 344 SGU Hope

Hope They say when all else is gone there is always hope and for Eli and Rush that hope appears in the aftermath of the attack on Homeworld Command and the loss of communication via the stones. It’s been weeks and no contact but the station is continual manned just in case and then as Chloe rests her body is inhabited by an intelligence which reveals itself to be Ginn. This causes some consternation since well Ginn and her consciousness is long gone after being murdered by Simeon when she was visiting Earth to help prevent the Lucian Alliance attack. Ginn is very confused, the last thing she can clearly recall is talking to the officers at Homeworld Command and it comes as a shock to learn that she is technically dead, her body having being buried by Eli on a world light years away. Rush reveals that he had talked to Franklin which opens up the possibility that whatever is Ginn at this time could be transferred into the Destiny’s computer and retain sentience and time is running short, continued physical choking is risking Chloe’s body and just to complicate matters Amanda Perry makes an appearance. If all this wasn’t enough Volker is in critical condition suffering from kidney failure, despite the risks Greer is a match and is will to donate a kidney and while TJ is emotionally distressed with the situation (being a medic after all not a surgeon let alone a Doctor the operation goes ahead. Surprisingly it’s the Volker storyline that ramps up the comedic aspects of the episode and it’s not even dark humour at that. Ultimately a solution is found thanks to the skills of Eli and Rush, Chloe is herself again and the Amanda AI assists TJ in the operation resulting in a successful conclusion for the two men. Hope is another excellent episode of Universe, lots of drama and comedy with some great performances thanks in no part to a good script. We see that the arboretum is now fully repaired offering an “oasis” within the ship full of life and Greer and Volker taking a rest stop there was a moving scene. The use of the Destiny to house Amanda and Ginn pays off the more nebulous interactions between Rush and Franklin plus the image of his former wife and it was a delight to see the two actors back on the show after their “deaths”. Gatecast 343 SGU Alliances

Alliances Stargate Universe ” Alliances ” concludes a story arc which has been in play since the assault on Destiny by the Lucian Alliance. As intelligence indicated an attack upon Earth various members of the invading force where kept on board and interrogated, this lead directly to the murder of Ginn/Amanda Perry and Simeon going on his rampage but also the addition of Varro to the crew. In this case a routine communication stone exchange to allow Dr Andrew Covel and Senator Michaels to board Destiny to gain more insight into the condition of the ship and crew went badly as Camille and Greer where in Homeworld Command when an attack by a cloaked cargo ship happened. The two of them survive but are trapped in the collapsed building along with another survivor but a geiger counter found in the rubble indicates a huge amount of radiation is present, Varro confirms that a Naquadria device is likely to be the means to destroy the city but something must have gone wrong. Alliances is a worthy conclusion to the Lucian Alliance plot, Varro once again proves himself invaluable despite the technical limitations of the communication stones and the interference of Covel which while being understandable wasn’t really thought through. It’s also interesting to note that Homeworld Command/IOA are having serious thoughts about the investment in time and resources required to recreate the Icarus base given the rarity of suitable planets. Great to see  French Stewart returning to the franchise and no question the pairing of Camille and Greer was inspired with some great dialogue drawing upon their establish character conflicts present since the first episode. Ultimately the episode demonstrated the best and worst of humanity but when push came to shove and with little alternative what needed to be done was done. The episode wasn#t perfect though, I still have issues with the threat of the Lucian Alliance or at least how the writers chose to present that threat but the “terrorist” approach was small scale and kept most of the narrative tied to Destiny which is important for the show as you would expect. Our thanks to Miles for the audio feedback for last weeks show and to everyone that listened and/or spread the show info by social media. Gatecast 342 SGU Twin Destinies

Twin Destinies The episode title Twin Destinies hints at this story which begins with the Destiny is badly damaged from the recent conflict with the drones and the use of a star to power the 9th chevron dialing is once again addressed as Eli claims to have made a breakthrough with the work he did with Ginn. He uses the communication stones to exchange with Dr Lee and the attempt is given the green light. Rush is opposed to the attempt citing all the possible things that could go wrong with the chaotic variables they will be manipulating. Young allows Rush to present his thoughts to the crew and as we see there are enough people willing to stay onboard and continue the mission despite the state of the ship. As they fly towards a star they receive a signal from a shuttle approaching Destiny, onboard is Dr Nicholas Rush who reveals he has travelled backwards in time and his Destiny is dead in space and the crew gone. We learn that a solar flare intersected the wormhole and only one person made it back to Earth but there is a ship out there with spare parts, food, medicine and weapons and the opportunity has to be taken to bolster this timelines Destiny although one Rush may be one too many. Well it’s true you can never have too much Robert Carlyle and he went to town in the episode and also credit to Lou Diamond Phillips who as Telford was the only person to get home portrayed the survivors guilt and anger towards Rush with style. An unexpected conclusion to both characters but when you have a spare then you can always offer up a good death scene without taking away future potential story lines. This episode also saw the final appearance of Bill Dow (Dr Lee) and the final sole writing credit for Brad Wright whose current series Travelers will return for a second season. Gatecast 341 SGU Deliverance

Deliverance The second half of the second season of Stargate Universe kicks off with Deliverance which is the conclusion to the two part episode which began with Resurgence. The Destiny is under heavy attack from the mysterious Drones but Chloe has sent a message to the Nakai who have been searching for her since she was abducted and infected with some pathogen. Three of their ships jump in and a good portion of the drones break off from Destiny and attack the newcomers. Rush and Eli manage to jam the drone communications for a brief period of time which allows the Destiny to lock on with their main gun and destroy the command ship, the rest of the drones power down. They decide to bring one of the drones onboard to study so they send the shuttle out, it recovers a drone by the Nakai intervene and hold the shuttle hostage, they want Chloe and they are holding all the cards. Chloe is nearing the end of her time as a human and with little chance of recovery and the benefits of getting the drone she is sent over to the Nakai ship. She is taken on board and once again the aliens perform some sort of medical procedure on her while Scott patiently waits in the shuttle hoping she will be allowed to return. Eli and his band of merry scientists continue to study the captured drone and then another command ship jumps in and launches drones but the existing ones don’t react. Eli realises that each drone is tied to a particular command ship and having already accessed the code they manipulate the alien version of friend and foe and the older drones. The Ursini having learned their colony was destroyed give their lives in a suicide run on the command ship which gives Eli the time to finish his work and then the old drones begin to attack the new ones. This small respite allows the Destiny to risk a FTL jump with minimal shields but the ship is badly damaged and many of the crew are injured. Deliverance is an excellent episode and a good start to this group of episodes. The drones now take over as the primary antagonist for the ship as the Nakai and Chloe storyline winds down and as always as answers and provide many more questions are being asked. The visual effects of the space battles were stunning as you would expect and the practical effects onboard where visually dramatic. Chloe and Scott had a wonderful scene together and the comedic element was surprisingly strong with Eli and particularly Volker and Brody. I think we are in for a very entertaining ride as we head towards the series finale. We want to extend our thanks to Thomas for joined us to record two episodes in one evening, this was the second and he’ll be back for the season finale. Gatecast 340 SGU Resurgence

Resurgence In the mid-season finale Resurgence the Destiny detects at extreme long range something that peaks Rush’s interest, given how focused he has been on the “mission” it’s surprising he is the one calling for the ship to alter course to investigate. When they arrive at this part of the galaxy they find  a wreckage strewn area of space, sensors indicate at least 5 starships were destroyed, once is still fairly intact so a shuttle is sent over to board the ship, Greer and Brody get to don the space suits. Suddenly a number of objects power up within the debris field and on board Destiny Eli thanks to a computer simulation realises that some of the debris is not as advertised and contain dormant power sources now activating. These small vessels zoom towards Destiny, the ship powers up shields and weapons and attempts to communicate, the response is sudden and violent as the ship comes under fire from these very fast moving drones. The ship looks doomed that an unexpected visitor arrives in the shape of a Seed Ship, together they jump away from the area and Colonel Telford gets to tell his story and how he has been spending his time alone with a bunch of aliens on the seed ship. Resurgence is quite an important episode as it introduces the main antagonist for the remainder of the second season, we also get the return of Telford and more information on the Ursini and the realities of this area of the galaxy. There are some spectacular CGI scenes in the episode with the Ursini ship, the wreckage field and the fast movers of this mysterious alien race who shoot first and never even worry about asking questions. As expected with a mid-season finale the cliffhanger is strong but unsurprisingly not that “edge of the seat” experience, Destiny is not going to get destroyed and no individual character was in particular dire straits. Overall a very strong and entertaining episode of Stargate Universe and we don’t have to wait a few months for the conclusion of this particular story. Our thanks to Thomas for joining us over skype from the states and he will return next week for Deliverance. Thank you to Mack for the feedback over on google plus and my appreciation for British Invaders podcast for continued entertainment for when I am working, their promo is featured this week. Gatecast 339 SGU Visitation

Visitation Not so long ago a number of the civilian crew of the Destiny elected to stay behind on a world which appeared seemingly out of nowhere. They were led by Dr Robert Caine a charismatic man with a strong religious faith, he believed the world was placed in the path of Destiny as a home for the lost. In Visitation months later a shuttle appears (as if by magic) alongside Destiny which is now in another galaxy, on board the shuttle are the people that were left behind. The people led by Caine claim not to remember recent events, they went to sleep the night before then awoke to find themselves in the shuttle alongside Destiny. They are checked out and seem to be healthy but for obvious reasons there is a certain level of scepticism, they should not be here and if they are who they say there are how and why are they here? Eli approaches Val (Camille Sullivan) and after a brief friendly chat blood begins to pour from her nose and then scalp, she starts screaming and collapses dead on the floor. Her friend Peter (Tobias Slezak) struggles to recall events on the planet but under memory regression he recalls his relationship with Val and her death after she was struck by a falling tree which smashed her skull. Peter dies soon after of what looks like hypothermia, it seems the people from the planet are dying on board Destiny in the order they died on the planet. Caine is still sceptical but after Rachel (Michelle Harrison) passes he too undergoes memory regression and learns that they had no cabins or crops and they were slowly freezing to death inside the crippled shuttle. Caine was the last survivor and now the only one left alive on Destiny, he knows he is already dead but takes comfort in the fact that his soul has passed on and maybe the divine or an alien species reanimated the body to allow them to say goodbye. Caine passes soon after leaving only a Kino behind which appeared on the shuttle after it was searched, on the Kino are the last few moments of Caine’s life and a bright light that envelops the shuttle, the recording fades and a quiet contemplative silence encompasses the watchers. Visitation is a mind bending episode drawing upon the events from the episode Faith yet doesn’t really answer the important question as to what the planet represented or who/what created it. Mind you it did solve one important problem, the Destiny finally got a shuttle which she desperately needed. Yes there was always the Stargate but a space ship needs a shuttle type vehicle or there are limits to where stories can go. The episode of course being vague leaves the question of the divine wide open (as it should be), hard to prove a negative and there is a reasonable scientific explanation again unproven. It may be that at the last Caine used his faith to not only accept his fate but to finally give closure to TJ who is still broken over the loss of her child. We also got an excellent scene with Chloe and Greer, her fate may be sealed as the infection spreads but Greer asking for forgiveness as he accepts his hand will be doing the deed was very moving, wonderful dialogue and performances. As always we couldn’t do this without our guests, this week our thanks go to Ian and of course continued gratitude to Brad for the audio feedback for Malice and to Mack for the posts over on our Google+ page, appreciated. This weeks promo is for Flash Pulp the always entertaining source of original audio content, movie discussion and a little bit of music. Gatecast 338 SGU Malice

Malice Simeon always a dark presence amongst the Lucian Alliance detainees strikes with malice when he learns that his clansman Ginn has used the communication stones to visit Earth and briefs Homeworld on the impending attack on the planet. He kills Amanda and the connection between the two women seals Ginn’s fate which causes heart break for both Rush and Eli, Rush however is more assertive and doesn’t wait for permission to peruse Simone through the gate onto the planet which Volker dialed under the threat of Park being killed. A game of cat and mouse then begins as Simeon lays trap after trap to thin out the numbers of his pursuers, eventually Greet gets shot and Scott reevaluates but turns to find that Rush has once again gone off by himself, he finally corners the wounded Simeon and plays the desperate yet helpless victim luring the Lucian soldier into a very devious trap indeed. An explosion rocks the valley and a rumble is heard, Simeon turns and sees his fate rushing towards him. Malice is a wonderfully dark episode full of anger and vengeance with desperation and some of the most beautiful location shooting to ever grace Stargate it not and science fiction series made. The environment truly looks alien yet the western themes run strong and you could easily picture this being viewed in a theatre back in the day when westerns were all the rage in Hollywood. Robert Knepper signs off his stint on Universe with a fantastic performance and Robert Carlyle portrays the driven man to perfection. I have to say after the side step with our bonus episode return to Universe with Malice was perfect scheduling, an episode that kicks off this new year with drive and passion and more to come as we look to the second half of the final season of Universe. Our thanks to Stephen for making a long awaited return to the show but as you heard in the podcast the lad has been busy and thanks to Mack for the feedback. Gatecast Bonus Episode 29 – Stargate Atlantis

Stargate Atlantis Wrap Up Show This weeks episode of the Gatecast takes a look back at Stargate Atlantis and their five year adventure in the Pegasus galaxy. As we did in the SG1 retrospective (mainly to keep the discussion short) we compiled a few questions and then had a round table type chat, it was fun. We did have some recording issues when we lost the primary track so the audio quality is far from perfect but listenable so we hope you enjoy our answers to the various questions, if you have alternatives then feel free to let us know. Our thanks to both Brad and Thomas for joining us for the show, rare we have guests from Australia and America on the same podcast but it worked out ok apart from said recording failure which wasn’t skype’s fault. Next week we are back to our Stargate Universe adventure with the episode Malice and are joined by Stephen so not long to go before we have covered all the live action Stargate made so far. We also want to thank everyone that voted in the Stargate Atlantis Favourite Episode Poll, we ended up with eighty responses and of them there were thirty eight people who left contact information and we’re included in the prize draw. If you want to know if you have won then listen to the show, I’ll be contacting the main winner and runner ups in a day or so to make delivery arrangements. Gatecast Bonus Episode 28 – Travelers

Travelers We take a look at the premiere episode of Travelers on this week podcast, one of the bonus shows and delayed a while so that with Showcase and Netflix broadcasts we shouldn’t be spoiling anything. Travelers was created by Brad Wright one of the minds behind the Stargate television franchise and the show features many familiar actors and crew who also graced Stargate with their talents. Travelers at heart is a time travel series centered on a time of individuals who have returned into their past to prevent a disaster that has global impact, in their time the world and the human race are dying and all their technology is focused on repair the damage done even if it ultimately leads to their own deaths or more accurately their births. While Travelers is freely available thanks to the Netflix deal (outside of Canada) it can only help but give this opening season the maximum exposure and thus provide the impetus for a second season because after watching the show I really do want to see how the events pan out, it was a pretty good season cliffhanger providing satisfying conclusions to plot elements introduced and opening up some very intriguing options if explored. This premiere episode (also named Travelers) basically introduces us to the main team as they attempt to blend into a world that is very much unlike the one they came from and trying to make no false steps as they are forced to continue the lives of the people they replace. The variety of the group and their situations maximises the story telling options and as the series continues the show just gets better and better as more complexity is added and yes as they change the past their future changes as well. I can highly recommend Travelers to any fan of science fiction and with Eric as the lead his presence really does add a level of audience awareness a lot of shows in the genre would kill for. Our thanks to Steve for joining to discuss Travelers, at this time he also has watched the entire season and as of yet not really heard a bad thing about it. Next week we are going to doing our Stargate Atlantis retrospective complete with the results of the listener favourite episode poll and then we’re back to our coverage of Universe. We hope you tune in for that and as always we would love to hear your thoughts on anything Stargate or the podcast. Gatecast Bonus Episode 27 – Stargate

Stargate 1994 Theatrical Feature Film On this latest bonus episode Mike, Brad and Andrew take a look at the 1994 Stargate theatrical feature film. This episode is not a commentary but a general discussion talking through the plot of the movie highlight the good and bad bits with maybe a little nit-picking along the way. I don’t think a synopsis of the movie is required but what the hell, mysterious artifact found in Egypt, taking to the states and under the control of the Air Force. Doctor Daniel Jackson is brought it as perhaps a last ditch effort to decode the hieroglyphs and he discovers the link to star constellations and formulates the devices use as a travel device on a galactic scale. Colonel O’Neill leads a team through the gate where they find a primitive human culture enslaved by Ra the Sun god who is actually an alien who stole humans to work for him and worship him. Fights break out, the military dudes engineer regime change, the people are free, Daniel gets married and stays with the inlaws. Our thanks to Brad and Andrew for joining us for this bonus show, a little different but we think it came out ok. Next week we are going to be taking a look at the premiere of the Brad Wright scifi series Travelers so we hope you join us for that and as this is released on new years eve have a safe and happy evening and lets hope for a wonderful 2017. Gatecast Bonus Episode 26 The Inheritance

Poltergeist The Legacy The Inheritance Rachel inherits the belongings including a house after the death of her aunt Rebecca. She decides to take her daughter Katherine along to allow the youngster to learn more about her family’s history. On arrival they met the local sheriff and the attorney handling the inheritance. Both seem a little disturbed that Rachel will be staying in the family home especially after a man named Simon had been dragged kicking and screaming from the house when Rebecca was found dead in her bed alongside a skeleton. Of course it’s not going to be all wine and roses as Rachel begins to explore the mystery that was Rebecca’s life and discovers that the skeleton was around 40 years old and shows evidence of dark magic engraving on it’s bones but maybe it’s too late. Rachel having found a brooch drew blood and we see her personality change as her dreams show a young Rebecca engaged in satanic like sexual activities with we assume the man whose skeleton shared her bed for decades. The Legacy sends help in the form of Nick and back by their resources the secrets are revealed leading to a confrontation between a fully possessed Rachel who is totally off her rocker but her daughter is the rock which draws her back. The Inheritance is a dark and very atmospheric episode of Poltergeist The Legacy, the music and cinematography at times goes far beyond what you would expect from a weekly hour long show. The funding from Showtime no doubt made the show better than it could have been if created for another channel as perhaps shown by the fourth season when Scifi took over the show. That said the episode was nicely paced, lots of mystery and suspense, great guest stars especially for Stargate fans in the form of Don S. Davis and Garry Chalk and a dark element which certainly makes the programme not for kids. Our thanks to Thomas for joining Mike to discuss The Inheritance as Alan was overseas when the show was recorded. We’ve decided next week we are going to be releasing the discussion between Mike, Brad and Andrew on the 1994 theatrical feature and then perhaps the week after our look at the premiere of Travelers and to wrap up the bonus season our look back at Stargate Atlantis. Gatecast Bonus Episode 25 – Stargate Infinity

Stargate Infinity Decision Well here we are again once more taking a look at Stargate Infinity and it’s premiere episode Decision. This time around Alan and Shayne sat down earlier this year to record a commentary intended for a april fools joke but it was better used for a christmas bonus show so sit back and enjoy. In Stargate Infinity “Decision” we are introduced to the world which is set around 30 years after the SGC was created and became operational. The characters are totally new and the SGC seems to have expanded significantly as more vehicles are used thus the gateroom and ramp are designed for such a purpose. The story begins with the court martial of Major Gus Bonner who supposedly disobeyed orders which led to his team being killed by an alien threat. An age old sarcophagus is discovered believed to house the remains of an ancient (which turns out to be still alive) and once again Bonner is seen to be allowing the aliens to invade the SGC. The young SG team still under training battle the invading aliens and when cut off they escape through the gate and find themselves far from home, Bonner now in their eyes exonerated leads them onwards on the journey to find their way home and to solve the puzzle of the ancient creature.   Stargate Infinity lasted just a season (26 episodes) but did get a DVD release. While the voice talent for the show is impressive the show can not be considered canon and overall suffers due to poor animation and the simple fact they chose not to make the most of the existing TV series as basis for their stories. As we’ve seen with Star Wars if you allocate a reasonable budget and use the establish source material to the max you can create an entertaining show for new and existing fans, Infinity failed to do either. Our thanks to Shayne for joining Alan for their look at SGI S1E1 “Decision” and shame on them for not doing episode two like they planned but I guess who can blame them:) Next week we are going to be taking a look at Poltergeist The Legacy S1E18 “Inheritance” which features Stargate cast and crew in front and behind the camera, Thomas joined Mike for that show so tune in and let us know what you think. We still have the Atlantis retrospective, Travelers premiere and Stargate (movie) to look at before we return to Stargate Universe so if you have time on your hands over the holidays we’re here to help you fill it. Oh also worth noting that Travelers will be appearing on Netflix from December the 23rd. Gatecast Bonus Episode 24 – Dark Matter

Dark Matter On this weeks bonus episode we are joined by Ian to take a look at the series premiere of Dark Matter. The show was created by Joseph Mallozzi and Paul Mullie who in their time wrote and produced episodes of Stargate SG1, Atlantis and Universe. This Syfy funded show tells the story of the crew of a spaceship who awoke from stasis with no memory of who they are, they do retain their intelligence and muscle memory skills but the details of their identity remains clouded. The ship’s android perceives them as a threat and attacks but is shut down and security protocols purged thus allowing her to serve this crew and to freely delve into the mystery of who they are. As the crew (numbered from the order they awoke) explore the ship they learn a few things and discover some puzzling aspects of what the ship had been doing but still nothing to identify themselves. They do come across an impregnable security door and a weapons cache, advanced heavy weapons and then the first clue as the android identifies the destination the ship was initially set for. They travel to the planet and find an independent mining colony who are expecting an assault by a corporation’s alien mercenaries, they tell the crew they sent for weapons to aid in their defence and boxes begin to get ticked. The crew return to the ship and decide to provide the miners with some of the weapons but once again the android makes a break through and reveals some personnel files stored in the computer, the crew are all wanted for extreme crimes and are not here to help the miners but are the mercenaries sent to kill them!   Dark Matter premiered on June 12 2015 on both the Space channel and the Syfy channel with a thirteen episode first season, the episodes in an amusing decision had no name just numbers. The second season premiered July 1 2016 with a third season currently under production. The premiere episode is technically a two parter but aired as two separate episodes and stands alone without any issues, the cliffhanger actually works very well with the revelation of who these people are, well all apart from Five who remains a mystery. The show has an excellent ensemble cast, two familiar faces (Jodelle Ferland and Roger Cross) who had appeared in Stargate along with Melissa O’Neil, Anthony Lemke, Alex Mallari Jr. Alex Mallari Jr, Marc Bendavid and Zoie Palmer fresh from her role on Lost Girl. The series also evolved from a limited run comic book series of the same name written by Joseph and Paul and published by Dark Horse in 2012. The premiere episode was entertaining and made the most of the mystery of the ship and the crew, the viewers were allowed to learn at the same rate as the principle characters and thus each revelation paid off to it’s fullest. The cast seem to have quickly embraced their roles although there is an awful lot of experience on screen and certainly behind the camera, these days a show needs to find traction quickly and Dark Matter certainly did that. The first season has a DVD and Blu-ray release in the stated but alas only DVD in the majority of markets and it fails to live up to the incredible standards in terms of extras we Stargate fans are used to receiving. Our thanks to Ian who joined us to watch Dark Matter, this was his first exposure to the series and it certainly sounded like he enjoyed the show and would continue to watch. As always we are grateful to everyone that continues to listen and interact to our Stargate coverage and we know this holiday season means a drop in listeners (we too have more important things to do) but hopefully these bonus episodes will tide is all over until we return with Universe in the new year. Next week we are going to be releasing the Shayne and Alan discussion of Stargate Infinity, yes it’s not all fun and games but then again when Brad and Mike talked about Infinity it was a fun time despite the quality of the show being discussed so tune in next week, share and enjoy. Gatecast Bonus Episode 23 – Penance

Penance Welcome to the twenty third seasonal bonus episode of the podcast, this week we are taking a look at the Sanctuary episode “Penance” which features Michael Shanks as the major guest star and a co-starring roles for Aleks Paunovic as “The Duke”. In this episode the Sanctuary team are meeting up with a courier who is transporting a very dangerous abnormal but they are intercepted by a criminal gang led by “the duke” who has laid claim to the abnormal. During the fire fight the team are split up and the courier Jimmy played by Michael Shanks escapes with Kate who is shot as they flee the scene in a car. The two hole up in an abandoned hotel with no communications while Helen and the rest search for them and deal with the Duke as he too looks for his prize. Penance is the ninth episode of the second season of Sanctuary and as you would expect when you get Michael Shanks to guest star he is going to take center stage. The episode starts off action orientated but quickly evolves into a character piece with a lot of the scenes focusing on Jimmy and Kate as they deal with her injury and discover their shared history which leads to a rather serious standoff thankfully defused by the Big guy played by Christopher Heyerdahl under a lot of prosthetics. Aleks plays the bad guy to perfection and while the joke about the golf club was probably in bad taste it was funny and his choice of artwork was an added detail to the character and story that was noticed. Overall Penance is an entertaining episode of Sanctuary which made good use of Michael and Aleks as well as mixing location shooting and the heavy green screen sets the show was known for. Our thanks to Brad for joining Mike on the show this week as Alan was busy and next week we are going to be look at the series opener of Dark Matter for another seasonal bonus show, join us for that and if you want to leave some feedback we would love to receive it. Gatecast 337 SGU The Greater Good

The Greater Good The question of what is the greater good is asked of many of the crew of Destiny in this episode as the ship comes across an alien derelict. Without a shuttle the decision is made to leap across the void (in the space suits) and employ a Kino as motive force and to string a connecting rope to aid the second person across. Colonel Young and Rush both volunteer and are probably both being a little paranoid but the unlikely couple do make it across safe and sound and enter the alien ship through a rupture in its hull. Rush is able to secure a compartment and bring power up and sends the Kino in search mode, they discover the alien pods they found previously on the Seed ship and unfortunately trigger an energy surge which propels the ship far away from Destiny. Rush is extremely unwilling to reveal the secret of the bridge and his partial control of the ship so convinces Young that the only solution would be to bring Amanda Perry back on board. Ginn has been supplying Homeworld with intel so is swapped with Amanda and once she is onboard then Rush lets her onto his secret. She gains access to the bridge and is able to fly the Destiny towards the alien ship and attempts to bluff Eli and the others that she has been able to tweak the maneuvering thrusters. Eli digs deeper and sees the secret messages Rush was passing onto Amanda and tracks hers down to the bridge, no one is pleased to say the least. Young and Rush have a knock down drag out fight before clearing the air and coming towards a consensus which if they survive could allow Destiny to be unified and to pursue the great mission that Rush has been tantalised by. Young and Rush are of course rescued but Simeon who has been disturbed by how close Ginn is to the crew and learns of her visit to Earth pays Amanda a visit in her quarters with a glorious amount of foreboding… The Great Good was an excellent episode, some of the CGI visuals where stunning more so because they were slow and deliberate allowing you to appreciate the detail the artists applied to their computer constructed models. The continued relationship between Ginn and Eli is fantastic and Amanda and Rush spark as you would expect. The highlight of the episode barring Eli getting seriously pissed when he discovers Rush’s betrayal is the dialogue heavy discussion between Young and Rush, two great actors performing with a good script and twenty six episodes of character growth behind them. Our continued thanks to Brad for joining us this week and the featured promo was for Generations Geek. Next week since it will be December we will be dipping into this season’s bonus episodes recording over this last year. Gatecast 336 SGU Trial And Error

Trial And Error Colonel Young continues his slide into the abyss in the episode Trial And Error as we see him indulge a little too eagerly the fruits of Brody’s homebrew experiments. Young has also started having what he takes for nightmares, very vivid nightmares of the return of the aliens who we first met when they were discovered to have been tracking the Destiny for who knows how long. Each of these experiences leaves Young failing to save the ship from destruction but he is able to take some action in the real world even though he can not really explain why he is making these specific choices. Eventually he bites the bullet and goes to talk to Camille who is obviously sceptical but when Eli discovers the ship has been running battle scenarios the truth is revealed that Destiny has been interacting with the Colonel perhaps testing his command capabilities and refusing to enter FTL until it is satisfied with the results.   Trial And Error is an interesting episode as it pretty much breaks Young who has been on the edge since first arriving on Destiny. His relationship with his wife and TJ plus the rigors of commanding the military and civilian crew plus day to day gate operations have all taken their toll. The death of Riley in hindsight was the breaking point where he started to use alcohol as a crutch and it’s only been getting worse. The battle scenarios and neural interaction certainly add a layer of complexity and capability to Destiny and opens up a whole world of scifi story lines if the writers so chose to use them given the show would still be around in a few years. Of course the kicker was that when Young finally realised how far he had allowed himself to fall and at least started to correct the matter the pay off of Destiny finally engaging the FTL was undermined by Rush and his antics on the bridge with the “Franklin” persona. Oh well, maybe we’ll learn more of what Destiny is capable of when it isn’t being manipulated by Rush for his own ends. Overall the episode was entertaining, the groundhog day approach is certainly not unique in scifi but it worked well and the cost of the rather spectacular explosions covered by multiple use. It was also gratifying to see Eli and Ginn simply sparkle with chemistry, it’s been said that she is perhaps a cold blooded opportunist but I want to believe she saw something in Eli that appealed and this was her chance to embrace a new path for herself free from the shadow of the Alliance. It was also without doubt delightful to see Greer playing the role of wingman or say big brother and taking such joy in the act, it confirms that he isn’t the hard nose he makes out to be but retains a very healthy scepticism on those who have yet to prove themselves. Our thanks to Brad for joining us this week and to Mack for the feedback. Gatecast 335 SGU Cloverdale

Cloverdale Cloverdale the home town of Scott and Chloe (also the location of many a Canadian tv series such as Smallville) plays host to their wedding after Scott on leave from the military returns home. Eli is the designated camera man for the wedding and all the preparations and Greer is the best man, oh lets not forget that Everett is Scott’s father not just the normal father figure. A lot is going on in the opening scenes of the episode but things come to an abrupt focus when we see the crew of the Destiny on an alien world battling some sort of native life form and Scott in critical condition. The episode then proceeds to tell the story of the events on the alien world as Scott lives an alternate life in Cloverdale surrounded by his friends and family played by crew of the Destiny. We see these people showing traits that is not the norm or others with attitudes highlighted, it may be that Scott is interacting with the people with character traits he believes them to have which may explain Volker being a little more fluffy than usual, Brody the source of things booze and in an interesting choice Vanessa as the love lorn ex who would still swallow her pride and offer herself body and soul on the eve of Scott’s wedding.   Cloverdale works in many ways, some of the location work is excellent especially the simple colour timing tweaks which turned a normal piece of woodland into a very alien world. Of course the Cloverdale location shooting was spot on and some of the in jokes worked very well including a very well crafted stunt which Brian was allowed to at least partially perform, check out the DVD extras for a full behind the scenes look. The standout character of the episode was perhaps Greer who was the life and soul of the wedding party and the true warrior as he fought off the alien planets aka Triffids. Rush was a close second thanks to a stellar performance as the registrar and both Brian and Elyse delivered solid performances. The episode viewer ratings wise is pretty average and I wouldn’t disagree but there are some good scenes and performances and serves a purpose as a standalone episode allowing for a breather for this seasons main story arc. Our thanks to Steve (once again) for joining us for the podcast and to Brad for the feedback, apologises for the shorter show which was the result of the second episode with corrupted audio recordings. Gatecast 334 SGU Pathogen

Pathogen Pathogen is a rather disturbing title for an episode more so for scifi but in this case it bodes extra specially for whatever is growing within Chloe and in part for Eli’s mother who is suffering from the accidental contraction of HIV. Maryanne Wallace is of course only aware of her son working with the US military at some undisclosed location but with no direct contact she is depressed and no longer taking her medication. In short she has given up ever seeing Eli again and without him she sees little to live for when everyday is a fight with the disease she carries in her blood. Chloe is becoming more and more suspect and in the eyes of many untrustworthy but as it happens Rush finds a way to not only use her to advance his agenda but hide the fact he is able to manipulate the Destiny at least upto a point.   Eli is allowed to visit Earth to try to form a bond with his mother but obviously without giving the game away and even when he does blurb she doesn’t buy the uber scifi narrative this strange guy is dishing out. Meanwhile Camille who is acting as intermediary is also taking the opportunity to visit Sharon who it’s obvious is having serious issues herself, a manic personality and increased alcohol consumption. When Eli finally reaches out to Camille she acts and forces the IOA and Homeworld into allowing a visit to Destiny by Maryanne and in that sequence is dare anyone not to get teary eyed as she finally sees her son in the flesh and wanders around the Destiny and absorbs every moment with her child. Eli for his part is back to the little boy hanging on to his mother’s dress for dear life and this simple act by Camille solves at least this problem. Perhaps the unexpected bonus was that Sharon meets up with Maryanne later which gives both of them a confident and anchor to share their troubles which also shows that at least Camille while being stubborn and opinionated at terms at least is not corrupt, she couldn’t give herself the privilege of have Sharon visit her but for another who needed it then she the power she had. Pathogen also gave us some very good moments with Simeon as his presences becomes more intense and we get both Greer and Varro making moves to contain the threat but unfortunately nothing much is being done but we can’t help but feel it should be obvious that Simeon is faraway from being the cooperative soldier that his fellow alliance members are. I said in the podcast I wasn’t sure if I really liked this episode, there was some very good scenes and situations but there wasn’t that clear cut “great episode” feeling about it, perhaps as mentioned it was meant to put the viewer on edge and if so Robert as a first time director did it proud. If you have listened to this episode of the podcast then you know we had some technical issues, most of my dialogue has to be replaced and alas it wasn’t always done well. Unfortunately next weeks episode will suffer from the same fate but then we found the problem and resolved it so bare with us. Gatecast 333 SGU Awakening

Awakening In the third episode of the season called Awakening we see the Destiny approaches the mysterious object detected earlier, the ship approaches swiftly which provokes Young to order the deployment of the main gun but before they can fire the thrusters engage slowing Destiny and docks the two ships. A team board the vessel through the airlocks which prove to be compatible, no surprise really as the design of the ship certainly echoes Destiny herself. As the team search the ship the control is activated and we see that there is something alive on board, shortly after Volker alone on the bridge is surprised by an alien who promptly collapses. TJ is sent over to provide aid and when the alien awakes they try to communicate and offer it food with little success. However Rush and Park discover that the Ancient built stargate seeding ship has almost a full energy storage cell which can be tapped to provide the Destiny with enough power to dial Earth. Everyone is excited but as they prepare to dial the energy feed reverses and the seed ship begins to draw power from Destiny.   Telford and Eli are unable to prevent the energy drain and everyone but Telford leave the seed ship, Rush on the bridge of Destiny makes the call and disconnects the two ships leaving Telford stranded and alarmingly surrounded by a number of the aliens… Awakening was an interesting episode both in terms of adding to the Lucian Alliance complication but solidifying Ginn and Varro and the dark presence of Simeon. We get another clear indication that when the proverbial hits the fan and the crew learn that Rush has control of the ship he may not survive the experience. Riley died because of Rush and his distrust and paranoia and now Telford has been abandoned to his fate although it has to be said it was a moving conversation between the two Colonels. It was great to see the Seed ship and the bay full of gates ready for deployment and quite funny how Rush reacted but of course he has bigger fish to fry whereas Scott and Greer were like kids in a candy store:) A decent episode which actually works better as a jumping off point for storylines to come but with plenty of drama, humour and some great character pieces which raises the episode above average. Gatecast 332 SGU Aftermath

Aftermath Well the titles says it all, in the aftermath of the defeated assault by the Lucian Alliance the crew have to come to terms with the loss of some of their comrades and the unexpected visitors locked up in a store room. Some members of the alliance forces are co-operating by explaining the reasoning behind their attack on Destiny while others are still looking to cause trouble. All ready there are rumblings of discontent amongst the expedition members over the resources being used on the captives but the IOA and others want to interrogate them as trouble seems to be brewing back in the Milky Way.   Rush has eventually determined the location of the ship’s bridge and in typical fashion doesn’t tell anyone else, he is confronted by a representation of his wife and Franklin who may be hallucinations or avatars of the ship’s AI but either way Rush is making decisions with little thought of the people involved. He brings the ship out of FTL near a planet with a locked off gate and proclaims it safe to visit via the shuttle even though there is extremely high turbulence in the atmosphere. Of course the shuttle crashes and Riley is critically injured and trapped in the wreckage, the gate as well is missing but turns up buried under what was perhaps a landslide and they are unable to return to the ship before the Destiny jumps away. Rush is confident that when the Destiny re-enters normal space the planet’s gate will still be in range and meanwhile they continue to dig the gate out eventually relying on explosives to clear the bulk of the debris. Once uncovered the Destiny does indeed dial the planet and the team are rescued and Young informed of Riley. He visits Riley and the two men share a moment and Riley makes it clear he knows he will die where he lies and makes it clear he does not want anyone to risk themselves by staying behind and asks Young to help him die. The silence passes by and as the unspoken words pass between them the Colonel suffocates Riley and then slowly exists the ship and announces the passing of the young officer. On board Destiny the Colonel gets a list via Telford of the members of the alliance the IOA and Homeworld want to continue to talk too, the rest of the alliance members are gated to the planet where it has to be said they will probably die. The Destiny jumps away now minus the last remaining shuttle which could be a problem since they have come in very useful so far. Gatecast 331 SGU Intervention

Intervention The second season of Stargate Universe begins with the episode Intervention. In terms of the show it is technically the final part of a three part story which encompasses the finale of the first season and the beginning of the second. Most of the expedition have been stranded on an alien world and after a power struggle amongst the alliance a number of the invaders are also marooned including Varro. The remaining Lucian Alliance still retain partial control after the ship was saved by Greer and Scott by adjusting the shields on the outer hull. Rush now begins to reduce the energy to the shields which will eventually allow the radiation to kill the crew or at least those who are not in a more secure location which is where Rush and company are going to hole up, as he says to Dannic those that are not safe are a necessary sacrifice. Dannic refuses to give up but is then killed by one of his own who then turns over control of the ship to Rush and they then gate back to the planet to retrieve the stranded people. Young returns to discover that TJ has lost the baby.   The secondary or maybe primary storyline in Intervention is centered on TJ who is unconscious in the med bay after being shot and losing her child. She awakes in a cabin and is greeted by Dr Cane who tells her she has been brought to the world they visited earlier in recognition of her sacrifice by returning to Destiny. Her daughter is alive and well and she is told that her child “Carmen” will be allowed to stay but TJ had to return to Destiny. She finally wakes up and indeed she is on Destiny and yes her child died due to the trauma of the bullet wound but something calls to her and she struggles to the main viewing port and sees the same nebula that was revealed to her on the planet… Intervention is an excellent episode to begin the second season of Stargate Universe, we get some action and full introduction to a few new players in this part of the story such as Ginn and Simeon. Varro continues to be the sensible and intelligent alliance member and one who Young could probably work with but that’s some way away, at this point keeping them confined is the only safe option barring abandoning them on a planet just as they were. The mystery of TJ and her child will remain just that for quite a while but the writing provides the viewer to follow the more scientific or mystical path as they so choose which gives plenty of options further down the line as the season develops. Overall we got a very good episode, great effects and character interaction, new characters making their mark and opportunities for the writers to expand in many directions and maintain the mystery that is Destiny. We want to thank Steve for joining us this week and he will be back for the episode Pathogen in a few weeks. Gatecast 330 SGU Incursion Part 2

Incursion Part 2 The Lucian Alliance and crew of the Destiny face off in Incursion Part 2, both sides have control of specific areas of the ship and both need/want what the other has. Young and Kiva agree on an exchange of medical and food for civilian hostages. Young is prepared to risk casualties by double crossing Kiva but the power issues intervene blowing the plan apart before it is enacted resulting in a half hearted exchange at best. Kiva then agrees to deal with Camille and a deal is done but alas the body of an executed Cpl Rivers is thrown in underlining how ruthless Kiva can be. Eli and Chloe continue to explore the ship and eventually find an active panel, he contacts the main control center using ancient which Rush recognises. Destiny thanks to the need to come out of FTL to allow gate access is in the vicinity of a pulsar whose regular output of gamma rays and other exotics is preventing the ship from generating the threshold of energy required to jump away, shields are taking preference. They decide to prioritise shields near the pulsar leaving the ship unprotected elsewhere which will mean less energy required and thus used for the jump engines. The shields however will need manually adjusting on the hull, Scott and Greer are tasked with the job. However to make it happen Young has to give control of the ship to Kiva but is hoping thanks to Telford the transfer can be reversed before any serious consequences.   Incursion Part 2 is a very fitting season finale making the most of the set up in the first half of this series of episodes and delivering action and oodles of suspense and drama. We lose crew and of course the cliffhanger leaves many of the main characters in jeopardy, in fact if contracts hadn’t been sorted before this aired many of the actors could be seriously worried. There was as you would expect some truly beautiful CGI shots and the stunt work was exceptional no doubt thanks in part to Mike Dopud who started his career as a stuntman, the fight in med bay was intense and brutal and the consequences heart wrenching and maybe the nastiest cliffhanger of them all. Lets not forget Eli and Chloe, a wonderful scene between the two of them which relied on a year’s worth of interaction and emotional ups and downs, credit to both David and Elyse. The final scene was beyond intense and the flickering light and fade to black highly effective in terms of building expectation but going hand in hand with the threat the ship faces from the pulsar. To sum up this was a pretty good episode:) We would like to thank Brad for joining us once again this week even when these two episodes were recording on the same night.  Brad will return for some bonus content later in the year and for a few episodes of the second season of Universe. Gatecast 329 SGU Incursion Part 1

Incursion Part 1 The first part of the two parter season 1 final Incursion kicks off where we left the previous episode. Telford is being more or less tortured and eventually dies but that’s what Young must have been waiting for as he is revived and immediately informs Young that the Lucian Alliance are about to launch an assault on the Destiny thanks in part to the contribution of the captured Dr Rush. Carter has flown to the planet housing the Alliance facility but as the attack commences that gate is activated and connects to Destiny. Young has laid a trap but when the chips are down he hesitates and the Alliance soldiers gain a foothold and break out of the gateroom and a running battle begins within the corridors of Destiny. Soon a balance is reached with both forces holding key areas of the ship, negotiations begin made the more urgent by seemingly unexplained power outages and an Alliance soldier being vaporised by some unknown force and of course Camille takes the role of the peacemaker and diplomat which you just know Kiva and Young would both agree is pointless but can be exploited.   Incursion being a two parter is using a lot of its narrative to make way for the pay off in the second episode but that aside this is a riveting episode full of action and drama. It has to be said though that Young failed in his task to protect his people. As Jack pointed out when Sam had to take her ship away from the exploding planet and sacrifice two of her pilots she made the hard call, for one man (well maybe two) Young allowed the Alliance on board and cost far more lives. Commander Kiva played by Rhona Mitra was fantastic, brutal yes but never a wasted action or reaction, she was as proved quite capable of cold blooded murder but when required had the sense to deal, no one reaches command rank in the Alliance by being reckless as we will see next week. Of course we also have a mystery surrounding the death of the Alliance soldier, well he was vaporised and with the power fluctuations we get a wild card in already volatile situation, next week should be fun. We want to thank Brad for joining us this week and he will return for the second part of this season finale. Gatecast 328 SGU Subversion

Subversion As you would expect from the title Subversion there are secrets and lies surrounding Destiny and the former Icarus project. The surprise attack on Icarus base was never fully explained but after Rush dreams of Telford having secret meetings after sharing the communication stones it becomes clear. Young is not totally convinced Rush is being truthful but agrees to allow him to take Telford’s place and investigate the Colonel but he also talks to General O’Neill about his suspicions and he in turn tasks Daniel (one man he can trust) to follow Rush. Meanwhile back on Destiny TJ is having a baby shower but when Telford arrives his sombre presence dampens things down but even with Camille’s support he is unable to prevent Young from pressing him on his undercover activities and the revelation of the communication stones side effects on people who shared Telford’s body. Rush makes contact with Lucian Alliance members on Earth and unable to supply credible ID is zapped and flown off world in a cloaked cargo ship and eventually arrives at a world which has the same Naquadah deposits as Icarus and a gate making it possible to dial Destiny if the calculations are precise. Kiva having tortured “Telford” and learning it is really Rush now expects him to complete the research for dialing Destiny, she orders the death of her own “expert” for well no longer being useful so plenty of incentive for Nicholas and while Varro shows him some compassion he admits that he will do the deed if Kiva requests it. Telford is also being aggressively interrogated onboard Destiny and Jack pays them a visit and Telford finally cracks and reveals his duplicity, yes it was under the thrall of brainwashing tech but the admission lets Young off his leash and he orders the air to be pumped out of Telfords room… Well what can you say about Subversion, great to see some of the SG1 cast making guest appearances and we begin to understand some of the behind the scenes events that led to the fall of Icarus. A little concerned how the Lucian Alliance can infiltrate Earth so easy and Teford being undiscovered for so long. We had some very nice moments with TJ which were pretty much the only “nice” things about this story to balance out the heavy and emotive drama going on with Telford and Rush. Rhona was kickass as Commander Kiva and we’re getting get a lot more of her next week when well the proverbial really hits the fan. Gatecast 327 SGU Pain

Pain This episode entitled Pain is pretty much standalone dealing with the unforeseen consequences of a recent visit to an alien world by some members of the expedition. The episode begins with a very dynamic sequence with Vanessa and Scott making sweet sweet nah going at it like rabbits which is confusing given Scott has pretty much staked his camp in the Chloe pasture. We then get a truly WTF moment when Scott ends up dead on the floor and we jump to a bemused Volker who can get out of his cabin and then Greer paranoia to the max spying Camille on the gate room computer. More slightly strange events occur before we get to see the outline of what is going on aboard Destiny which pays off pretty well I have to say. The cold opening really leaves the viewer in a confused frame of mind because nothing we are seeing is outside the bounds of probability or reason. You may notice the write up for this episode is fairly short that’s because while overall it has no real impact on the main story it should be experienced by the viewer as fresh as possible, if you haven’t seen it yet then you are for a treat, if it’s been a while then you should still enjoy it. For a veteran viewer some of the shine may have been lost and without plot elements meshing with episodes either side of it then it may lose some appeal. Gatecast 326 SGU Sabotage

Sabotage The Destiny is venturing into the void between galaxies when one of the drive units explodes, sabotage is not suspected despite the episode title, rather the simple fact of the age of the ship is considered to be cause. They decide to bring in an expert in FTL engines one Amanda Perry who has been developing the replacement for the Asgard hyperdrives currently installed in the BC-304 starships. Amanda is however a paraplegic and who ever swaps with her will have to spend maybe a month experiencing what Amanda has had to live with since she was a nine year old. Camille desperate to see Sharon again agrees to swap and the exchange is made allowing Amanda and Rush to be reacquainted after working together at the SGC. While the ship is adrift the gate activates, the defence crew rush to the gate room and behold Chloe, Scott and Eli walk through, everyone seem surprised even the three wanderers who have been saved by the explosion onboard. We then get a pretty good montage which covers the following three weeks and with the aid of one of the recently discovered robotic maintenance units the drive pod is ejected and bypassed which increases the efficiency of the engines making it possible for Destiny to reach it’s destination. Amanda now bids farewell to Rush and reveals that she has also loved him but knew he had not yet gotten over the loss of his wife and after the events in “Human” Rush is reliving the same feelings and is unable to reciprocate her feelings (at this time). To complicate matters further they discover that Lt. James after an aborted use of the communications stones has been taken over by one of the aliens and it was “her” who had sabotaged the engines and then the aliens arrive on the scenes. In a desperate do or die situation Young prepares to sit in the Chair but Franklin finally speaks and returns to the device which almost killed him. As the ship comes under attack and the shields weaken he merges with the ship and then she jumps to FTL, Franklin however is missing… Sabotage once again deliveries on multiple fronts, we get some solid drama with Camille and Amanda from both perspectives and we get a little bit of action, plenty of humour and another mystery which may be explained or maybe not. Gatecast 325 SGU Lost

Lost In the episode Lost we continue the off world adventure of Scott, Chloe and Eli as they choose to leave Greer behind after the second tunnel collapse. It was a tough decision for Scott to make but it was the right one given that the Destiny would not be waiting for them and their only chance of returning to the ship would be to have gated to a world further down the path the ship was traversing. Greer awakes to find himself trapped but manages to free himself and follows the chalk marks on the walls to freedom, of course he is too late but without a remote he can not go anywhere so sets up camp near the gate. This is where the writers chose to provide us with the meat of his backstory and it is very revealing. An abusive father who was no doubt suffering from PTSD after serving in the gulf shaped a young Greer into a man who wanted nothing more than to protect others and it was through the service he found his peace. While the lost members of Destiny struggle to survive the ship itself has gone into power saving mode, they soon realise that she is preparing for a Galactica FTL jump and with no gates between the galaxies the opportunity to search nearby worlds will soon be no more, teams gate to available worlds expanding outwards in a last ditch hope of crossing path with the missing team. Eventually Lt. James gates back to the world where the team originally were trapped and finds Greer waiting for them, he returns in good condition but as the counter reaches zero and the final search term returns the ship jumps and begins her voyage to another galaxy. We then see Chloe, Eli and Scott vainly attempting to dial Destiny just as it winks out on the remote, gone forever… Well a pretty impressive episode of Stargate Universe with some excellent background to the troubled character that is Greer, it was well worth the wait. We get some good exploration via the Stargates as the teams jump from world to world and none of that could have been cheap to do, the “dinosaur” was a laugh and the winter world and crystal world were very impressive to look at. The issues with Destiny herself continue to plague the expedition, the lack of any control still means the potential to lose people if even a single event goes awry must cause Young sleepless nights and speaking of which he now knows he is going to be a daddy. Overall Lost was a very good and entertaining episode, good character writing and interaction as well some stunning visual effects to enhance the story being told. Gatecast 324 SGU Human

Human In the 14th episode of Stargate Universe “Human” the crew of the Destiny have to deal with some bad decisions by the gate team who venture into some tunnels within a long abandoned and derelict city. The tunnel system collapses blocking the exit and trapping Chloe, Scott, Greer and Eli underground with no way to navigate the complex pathways, they can however contact the ship and relief is sent to help dig them out but the clock is ticking and ultimately Lt. James and her people are unable to reach their friends and are forced to return to Destiny. Meanwhile depending upon your point of view the A or B story deals with Rush who after some tweaking of the “chair” has connected himself to it in the hope of revealing the key to the Destiny which they believe will allow them full control of the ship. Human is very much a Rush episode despite the rather traumatic events going down on the planet which themselves would easily carry an episode. However seeing so much back story to the enigmatic Rush is very absorbing even though we are seeing him experience his past (Louise played his wife Gloria perfectly) knowing it’s not real so his actions are different to what they were. That said so much is made clear and provides an explanation as to the character we first met in the opening episode who then proved to be rather aggressive, arrogant and short tempered. It was probably fitting that the sacrifice Franklin made by trying the chair first paid off allowing Rush to commune with the computer system of the Destiny and it was an interesting to see the merging of his psyche with the AI of the ship. We still are not clear as to what the Ancients equipped the ship with in terms of control systems, there seems to be some intelligence maybe even sentience there but it’s clear the Destiny is far from a starship controlled by simply programming. I was a little disappointed that the excellent choices in music during the episode were not more key to solving the puzzle of the ship but they did lead the way and maybe even Rush was able to learn something about himself which will temper his interactions with the crew. Rush aside it was a little reckless for the gate team to enter an unstable tunnel system in pursuit of a kino, it was simply a bad decision and a few more bad choices left them in an untenable position, the consequences of which may take quite a while to play out but the drama of time running out and then Destiny jumping to FTL was intense. Overall a very good episode with two significantly different stories and kudos to the director and cinematographer for making the two very different visualisations of the events work and look so well. I want to offer me thanks to Thomas for joining me on this podcast, Alan was unavailable to it was just the two of us and we had a good time with an episode I was not sure would hold our interest after so many viewings, I was wrong. Gatecast 323 SGU Faith

Faith In the episode Faith we see the Destiny drop out of FTL in a star system with a single planet that had not been charted by any of the seed ships which had passed through their part of the galaxy. Rush investigates and determines that this star and planet where simply not there when the seeders were looking to place Stargate and the scans of the system simply make no sense in terms of the age of the star and the planet’s structure and ecosystem. However Destiny will be in the system for at least a month as it orbits the star so the shuttle is sent down along with a full compliment of volunteers who set up camp and proceed to live the life of hunter/gathers. TJ goes along and realising now she is well into her pregnancy makes the most of the fresh air and water and good local food to revitalise her soul, many in the camp follow suit. On Destiny the remaining crew take the time to do some maintenance and explore the ship further, they find a few things that may come in useful at a later date but overall a depression has set in thanks to the daily grind and as the ship gets nowhere rather slowly. Of course not everyone had the opportunity to visit the planet but with gate travel limited perhaps many people still have not physically left the shop since they arrived. As the days go by and the camp prospers many begin to question the existence of the planet and the strange tower, perhaps the planet was created by an advanced species for purposes unknown or as Dr. Caine mentions perhaps it’s a gift from god. When their time on the planet draws to a close Young is rather startled to hear that not everyone wants to come back, mostly the group consists of the civilians but Scott and TJ want to stay, this does not go down well with the Colonel. Taking the partially repaired second shuttle he makes planetall and offers a deal, if all the military return he will leave that shuttle (shelter, power and limited flight) for the civilians and wish them well. TJ is heartbroken but a realist and returns forcing Scott to follow suit and the primary shuttle returns to Destiny with less people than before but packed with food and water. Faith is beautiful looking episode making full use of the location shooting, some of the visuals are truly awe inspiring including the “night” shooting which was actually done during the day and making use of post production to create a truly believable night scape. The discussions between all the characters on the planet be it about TJ and her pregnancy and the existence of the plant and the tower be it from god or another species showed how good the writing was in the show and the chemistry between both regular and guest actors. There are many questions asked in this episode and they tend to be ones with no direct answer, certainly this planet will remain a bit of a mystery for a while as such things should be although I am sure it’s existence may have been addressed if Universe had been on the air longer than it was. Gatecast 322 SGU Divided

Divided We see in Divided that the tensions which have been brewing since the Icarus survivors reached Destiny stoked it has to be said by Rush and Camille come to a head and a core group of the civilians stage a mutiny in an attempt to take control of the ship. The timing turns out to be poor as when the shuttle returns with Young and Scott on board it is unable to secure itself to the ship and as the FTL countdown is almost up it will be left behind when the Destiny jumps. Chloe and Camille pressure Rush to stop his attempts to secure exclusive access to the computer and he reluctantly agrees but it means that some control of the ship remains in the hands of Eli and under the control of the military. The ship now for all intents and purposes is split in two but the military have control over life support but the civilians have all the food and water, someone will have to blink first. Young however is not going to be sitting on his ass, he and Scott go for a walk on the hull of the ship and access the civilian areas through the damage done by the recent alien attack. The conflict is soon resolved as the military quickly secure the ship but then the aliens turn up, three ships then begin firing hoping to break down the shields. While the crew are indeed divided it turns out that as usual Rush has been manipulating Camille, he knew he had been implanted with a tracking device and afraid of what Young would do he engineered the coup in an affort to protect himself. Alas he had the right idea to defend the ship, unable to fight effectively their best chance for survival was to endure the attack until Destiny jumped away but he was still being selfish, the only true protection would be to totally evade the aliens which means surgery to remove the tracker from Rush. The do use the communication stones to bring a surgeon (via Chole’s body) but the connection breaks during the procedure, Rush was probably lucky they didn’t just throw him out of the airlock! Divided was a stellar episode, a tightly told story with some wonderful one on one dialogue, TJ excelled when laying down the situation to Chloe (war is what we do) and you can almost feel sorry for Camille who yes has her agenda but was totally manipulated by Rush. The episode delivered the usual high standard of visual effects and the opening sequence (cinematography and music) was a credit to Stargate as a whole. One of the best episodes so far and a lot more to come. Our thanks to Andrew for joining us over skype for this episode and to Mack for the feedback, thanks to Colin and Adriano for their emials as well. Gatecast 321 SGU Space

Space Stargate Universe returned for the second half of its first season with the episode Space in which the crew come face to face with one of the known elements of the universe, we are not alone and for the most part our fellow beings are not warm and cuddly, although neither are we if we are being honest. The fate of Rush is still being questioned amongst the crew and Camille tells Young she will be reporting in full to the IOA but as he points out she can only speculate and at this point it may be that she was in the dark as to the framing of Young for the murder of Spencer. Young uses the communication stones and finds himself on an unfamiliar ship and face to face with an alien being, the being seems uninterested in Young and we find out that on board Destiny the alien consciousness is now inhabiting Young’s body. The connection is broke and while many are sceptical that Young saw what he did when a huge spaceship appears in front of the Destiny the doubts fade away…   Eli attempts to communicate with the alien ship and they get a simple one word response “surrender” which came though untranslated, Young orders the launch of the shuttle and for the ship to bring her weapons on line. As the shuttle approaches the ship they see a number of smaller craft fly towards them, battle is joined but many get by and at least one latches onto the Destiny and breaches the hull. Chloe approaches the breech and looks into the light, we then see the ship detach causing decompression. When Young realises what has happened he orders the shuttle to cease fire and decides to once again use the communication stones to get intel on the aliens. We then get treated to the realisation that the aliens have captured Chloe for some sort of interrogation but that’s not all, they also have another human suspended in a water containment vessel, Rush is there. Young breaks Rush from the vessel and after some confusion and pain Young returns to Destiny and orders Eli to open up on the alien ship with the main weapon despite the risk to the shields and conduit stability, is he trying to save the Destiny or finish Rush off once and for all even sacrificing Chloe along the way? Space is a major turning point for the show, we know the universe is full of life but this is the first confirmed contact the crew have had since coming to Destiny and it seems this race have been trailing the Destiny for a long long time. At this point we don’t know their motivations and they didn’t shoot first but who would say Young was incorrect in a pre-emptive defence of the ship after the surrender message. Scott lets his feelings get the better of him and Greer is having the time of his life, Camille is once again pushing the boundaries and we get both humour and drama from all the remaining characters. This is a good episode which makes the most of the cast and throws in a lot of great looking action and suspense which is all you really want. Gatecast 320 SGU Justice

Justice The mid-season finale of Stargate Universe is entitled Justice and brings forward the conclusion of the ongoing issues with Sgt. Spencer who more than many has been having serious issues and coping with self medication. Now we know that whatever drug he has been taking has run out and his behaviour has become more extreme over the last few weeks culminating with an assault and bullying of Franklin in particular. The events that take place on Destiny are shocking but offer an opportunity for both Rush and Wrey to gain control over the ship and while both are complicit in the events as they unfold as always Rush has his own very personal agenda. Justice begins with a truly humorous scene more so because Greer is at its center, there is a good bonding moment between him and some of the scientists which gets derailed when he investigates the missing Spencer and finds his body with a bullet hole in it’s head but no weapon. The scene certainly implies suicide but the missing gun points to at worst murder and at best some other nefarious plot. The weapon is found in Young’s quarters by Eli and Wrey uses this to undermine the military control of the ship through a hearing (approved by the IOA) but much to her annoyance Chloe is treating the hearing with respect. Wray was looking for an easy takedown but can’t seem to handle the fact that a civilian could be arguing for due process and a balanced look at the facts. It’s quite clever that the writers didn’t give us any reason to really like Camille but then they gave us her homelife and a 180 degree turn in her character but now back on the ship she’s back to well her professional self and not much to like there. Spencer himself was another character we were not meant to like, we knew little about him and his stealing of supplies and mysterious drug use were red flags but ultimately he was perhaps the first of the true casualties, he was broken before reaching the Destiny and had no avenue to seek help, others sacrificed or were selfish or simply met an unfortunate end but Spencer was a victim in the truest sense. Eli once again is feeling the pressure of being privy to secrets and of course we get the final straw of the fragile relationship between Young and Rush. Pity the discover of the spaceship on the planet came so late in the FTL downtime, who knows what they could have learnt. Many thanks to Thomas for joining us this week, a few technical issues which meant no clean audio for some of the show but that was a temporary issue. Gatecast 319 SGU Life

Life In Life Scott and Camille return to Earth while on board Destiny TJ is assigned the task of doing the rounds of the entire crew and having a casual chat with them. The continued search of the ship aided by the improved power status reveals a new section which houses a strange looking chair, Rush believes it is a very early version of the Ancient repository of Knowledge and immediately begins to campaign for its use. Young is sceptical given the dangers inherent in the attempt and points out that instead of hoping for someone to volunteer if Rush thought it was safe he should use it on himself.  On Earth Scott learns his former girlfriend Annie Balic has a son, he visits her home (as Telford) and she does reveal the Scott is the father, he offers her his monthly paycheck which she accepts but refuses to abandon her lifestyle to live an image that Scott believes she should. Camille has a wonderful visit with her partner Sharon Walker who is aware of the mission and we learn that Camille is estranged from her more conservative parents, it seems Camille is under pressure from her family and workplace in regards to her chosen life which may explain why she projects a cold and analytical persona upto a point. When Scott returns to the Destiny he tells Young that he has been dreaming of Telford and his interaction with his wide, Young does not take this well. Rush meanwhile has discovered a planet which could provide the energy required to power a nine chevron dialup but it’s a year away, the crew are delighted until Eli discovers that it’s fake and that’s yet another black mark on the relationship between Rush and Young. The episode wraps with many of the crew in very introspective mood and dealing with events they have little control over and it closes with a close up of Spencer who we know has run out of his medication… Life is a slow down from last weeks action themed episode and suffers a little but counters with some fantastic character pieces and insights into their onboard life and back on Earth. Scott has to deal with being a father after maybe running off to the military after knocking up his former girlfriend who he believed handled the situation. Camille however was a revelation, the relationship with Sharon was an outstanding look at a stable and loving couple who were dealing with an almost impossible situation. Every scene between the couple was beautiful as was Sharon’s mask failing when she was alone and Camille paying respect to her parents while incognito, it may have been the first time they have talked in years. Life is an episode that will certainly appeal to a good portion of the audience and maybe not to others but there is no doubt there is an awful lot to like and enjoy in the episode. Gatecast 318 SGU Time

Time Time is an obvious title for this episode and fits well into the rather simple but descriptive methodology the producers have chosen to identify the episodes within the series. In Time we have a team gating to a jungle which should be a rich source of organics for both food and perhaps medicine. They do make a rather startling discovery when they come across a Kino, maybe it was left by other travels but it contains data and when viewed they see themselves on this world and then watch in mounting horror as one by one the people on the recording fall ill and then come under attack from a native life form leaving death and destruction in its wake. On board Destiny the crew to struggle to explain the recordings but then they too start to fall ill and a contaminant is found within the water supply, no doubt due to some poor purification when they harvested the ice, only know has it become strong enough to affect its human hosts. TJ is pushed to the limit trying to treat those that are falling ill and soon one by one the crew lose their battle with the illness, Chloe passes first leaving us with a very touching moment with Eli but indicates a direct correlation between events on the recording and this timeline. Destiny has already dropped out of FTL and the planet became available to dial and thanks to the rather unexpected recovery of Scott (on the recording) it seems a powerful antibiotic can be found in the lifeform responsible for the deaths of the crew in the other timeline. The visit to the world does not go well and Scott hears of Chloe’s death and again the lifeforms attack ripping through the soldiers until only Scott is left but now he knows what to do, as time runs out he records all the information required for another timeline to solve the puzzle and sends the Kino through the solar flare affected gate and onto a different timeline… Well what can you say about Time? Absolutely brilliant in execution which covers both the production of the episode, the writing, direction and acting. There is really very really too criticise about this episode making allowances for the ever present convoluted issues with time travel stories. Everyone shone in the episode from Eli having a borderline breakdown on the planet to Chloe seeing herself dies (first one to do so) and TJ hitting a brick wall in treating the crew. We also got a very strong scene with Greer who took to heart his other self’s failure to protect his people, again we see the level of integrity within Greer which is so easy to miss when you take him at first sight. Time is an episode that does stand alone in this first season and should be watched by an scifi fan. Gatecast 317 SGU Earth

Earth The IOA propose a dangerous experiment to use the refueling capability of the Destiny to provide the power required by the Stargate when it dials a 9 chevron address. They basically want to dial while the ship is within the star and draw energy directly to the gate, there are concerns but the IOA are convinced it will work. One issue is that they spring this on Young when he is making a scheduled visit via the stones and when he balks at the idea they do an end run and have Telford enact the plan. This means that Young, Eli and Chloe are all on Earth while these almost reckless plans are put into place, of course this allows all three to visit family and Eli finally gets to catch up with his mother who unfortunately is not cleared for full disclosure. Rush continues to resist the experiment but after a one to one with Camille his throws in with Telford and after they drain the power reserves of the ship by using her weapons she jumps to the nearest star and begins to refuel. The programming kicks in and the gate begins to dial drawing power directly but it soon becomes apparent the conduits have since lost their capacity to carry so much current and the ship is going to rip herself apart… Earth is rather character dependent even with the pretty impressive visual effects used when Destiny is performing the experiment. There is a considerable amount of what you could call talking heads scenes but none of the them are boring and each either expands on the character or their immediate relationships. Eli for example is explored through his emotions towards Chloe as well as his love and obligations towards his mother so plenty of good writing going on but the pacing can feel a little slow if you are not committed to the characters and narrative. All this aside it was also rather telling that the IOA personnel when faced with death immediately jumped ship, it underlines how important the ship is rather than the crew which is pretty much exactly what Rush believes. Overall Earth is a good episode and I think most people would say they didn’t expect the musical interlude but hey Universe is nothing if not different. Gatecast 316 SGU Water

Water The Destiny continues it’s journey though out the Universe with the rag tag bunch of inhabitants who now find their precious water stores being rapidly depleted with no obvious cause. Suspicion of each other soon develops and the water is locked down and searches of personal cabins and possessions begin generate ill will amongst some. Destiny drops out of FTL and a planet appears on the DHD which seems to be ice bound, two space suits are in good condition so Scott and Young gate to the planet and begin small scale mining operations, at this point any water is a bonus. It does however take them some time to find clean good quality water ice and in an area subject to tremors it’s no surprise Scott falls into a crevice leaving Young with the dilemma to get the ice back to the ship or attempt to rescue Scott as their air supply dwindles. Meanwhile on Destiny TJ has encountered an alien entity, they believe it is the same on that Scott met on the desert planet and it enjoyed a drink, the explanation of the missing water is revealed but not how to prevent further loss. They trap the life form and then tempt it into secure storage and throw it through the gate to the ice world where Rush and Scott are attempting to return before they lose their air and the alien surrounded by water recognizes Scott and then departs. Water is perhaps the beginning of serious dissatisfaction between the military and civilian components of the Destiny crew and the lack of information and military viewpoint begins to grate. Spencer is discovered to have been hoarding food and water which doesn’t help the them and us mentality developing and of course Rush stirring things up as usual makes matter worse. The episode however was entertaining, some incredible set design for the alien world (see the behind the scenes features on the DVD/Blu-ray) and very clever writing to bring back the alien life first encountered by Scott. It was also gratifying that the solution did not require any wholesale destruction and maybe the alien itself considers it’s choice to board Destiny worthwhile with a whole new world to explore with plenty of water. Many thanks to Mack for the feedback over on Google + and to Ian for being our guest on this episode, he will return next week when we are going to be taking a look at the episode Earth. Gatecast 315 SGU Light

Light Light is the second part of this two part story and continues with the Destiny making a beeline for the primary of the solar system the ship found itself in when it came out of FTL. Of course at this point they are not aware that this was a deliberate choice by the AI of the ship so faced with imminent death extreme measures need to be taken. The sensors pick up three planets in the solar system, the first two are not suitable for human life and the third is behind the sun and impossible to get accurate data on. However to reach the planet in good time the shuttle will have to leave before confirmation of suitability is obtained so the choice is bad to try to save 17 people. Colonel Young picks Scott and TJ to be on the shuttle as pilot and medic and the remaining 15 places are determined by a lottery, Young and Rush remove themselves from the draw. The shuttle departs with the chosen few and the remainder of the crew spend their last few hours, some read, some just walk and some take comfort in their faith or simple companionship. Time ticks by and the planet is scanned by the shuttle and proves to be unworthy for life and back on Destiny there seems to be some confusion as to why they are still alive. Rush figures it out and with a burst of joy (yes he smiles and laughs) takes in the wonder of the Destiny as is cruisers through the photosphere of the star and gathers in the energy rich plasma the ship needs to power her systems. The call the shuttle and order them to return home but they are unable to rendezvous with Destiny, Rush and Eli do some quick calculations and project a course for the shuttle around the planet building up speed and slinging them out of the system along the same path as the Destiny. Of course they make it back intact and all seems right with the world now they know the method Destiny has been using to power herself for these millennia but for Young the question of did Rush know or suspect this was the case…. Light is another good episode of Stargate Universe and a worthy second part to this story which as we know was originally a single episode called “Fire”. It was great to see Rush smile and be rather civil to more of the people on board but at the end we get the conflict within the character come to the forefront, Rush is always going to be that chaos element in this show. Gatecast 314 SGU Darkness

Darkness Darkness is the fourth episode of Stargate Universe and after the crew solved the problem with the air filtration you would think there would be some respite but it was not to be. Rush is monitoring the power levels and becomes rather irate as technology is activated by order of Young and then as if an off switch is flicked the ship loses power and falls out of FTL. Basic life support is still functioning but it doesn’t look good especially as Rush finally has an emotional break and collapses. Young uses the communication stones to report back and while he is on Earth goes to visit his wife and as she says it seems he is making sure he gets to say goodbye. I guess I don’t blame Young but with so many people on Destiny and the growing issues with transparency between the command staff and highly placed civilians many would have liked the opportunity to speak with their loved ones. The crew however continue to record bits and pieces using the Kino and in terms of the show this idea allows the viewers to get a peak into the inner thoughts of the crew which is essential to each episode. Stargate Universe is character driven but there are times one one one chat providing exposition can get a little clunky especially if you have a large main cast and a significant number of recurring characters. In this episode we got some really good background on Volker, Riley, Brody and Dr Park was magnificent as she seems to be really embarrassing the opportunities Destiny is providing regardless of the sword hanging above their heads. As it turns out Destiny had dropped out of FTL at the edges of a star system and uses a gas giant to aero break into the inner system, this whole sequence is magnificent and is as good as anything you’ve seen on television and equals theatrical features. As the crew take a deep breath the calculations and visual indications show that the ship is now aimed directly at the systems sun and there is nothing they can do… Darkness was a great episode, the suspense and tension on the ship as she loses power and Rush breaks down was of the highest order, the episode did take a breather with Young back on Earth and of course Telford playing his games but I guess that is a longer term payoff. The use of Lt James as the focus of some immature and very questionable behavior by Hunter and Eli kinda clashed with how she had manipulated Eli earlier but as with Chloe in the “shower” they chose not to be graphic which they could have done and gotten away with up to a point. The visual effects of Destiny before, during and after her visit to this star system was exceptional, all credit to the artists for rendering some truly spectacular visuals to accompany the performance of the cast and situation. Darkness continues the great work being done early in this first season and once again makes me realise how much better this show is on a rewatch. Gatecast 313 SGU Air Part 3

Air Part 3 Steve and Jeff are back for the final part of this season opener, Air Part 3. In this episode which once again picks up where the second left off the chosen few from Destiny are exploring the first alien world they have been able to gate too after Destiny came out of FTL. Rush has made a play to always be at the center of things so while Young isn’t convinced he should leave the ship he allows it but makes sure Eli goes along as well for the reasons explained in the previous episode. On this desert world the team begin to search for the compound required to use in the ships atmospheric filters and batting zero they split up. Soon members of the group led by Eli seize the Kino and gate interface and return to the gate intent on going to another world. Eli does his best but he is unable to prevent the armed insurrection but the guy does try:) Two of the group go through the Stargate but Greer prevents the DHD from following them and he leaves Eli to watch over Rush who proved to be a bit of a nuisance on this mission. Greer then goes in search of Scott who is having hallucinations or maybe influenced by an native intelligence of this world. This being provides water and then reveals the compound they have been searching for. Scott and Greer  make haste getting back to the stargate as the Destiny FTL timer countdown and Eli sticks his arm in the event horizon which gives them a few extra seconds to get home before the ship jumps. The two people that went through the gate are abandoned, Franklin has his gun shot wound dressed and the rest of the group are suffering from sunburn and dehydration but for now as fresh air circulates through the ship the danger is over… Air Part 3 is another great episode of Stargate Universe and as I have said before it’s hard to quantify it’s value as a standalone when you take into consideration how well structured this three part story has been. Once again there was great dialogue and character interaction between the main and minor players in this drama and the scenes in White Sands were visually stunning, money and time well spent by the production. Gatecast 312 SGU Air Part 2

Air Part 2 We’re back for the second part of the Stargate Universe premiere three parter “Air Part 2”. In this episode which picks up exactly where the first left off the survivors of Icarus are stranded on the Ancient starship with environmental conditions deteriorating and serious injuries to Colonel Young and Senator Armstrong still life threatening. Rush unbeknown to anyone else takes the communication stones which Young risked his life to retrieve and changes place with Dr Lee, he goes straight to General O’Neill who kinda chews him out for not gating to a known address and thus getting as many people home. When Rush returns he announces he has been given command of the mission and when the Senator objects he collapses, his injuries are far more severe than first thought. As the conditions aboard the ship continue to decline they confirm that damage to the hull has caused extensive use of the ships shields but they are not perfect and the ship is losing atmosphere. The onboard air scrubbers are also well past their prime and their catalyst is useless but at this point the ship drops from hyperspace and the gate console comes to life with at least one world indicated and three more red lined. Rush explains that the ship may have brought them to this system as it contained the materials required to fix the air processors of the ship and there is no time to waste, for some reason a countdown has been initiated until the ship jumps back to FTL. Young puts together a team and explains that everyone has to prove themselves and so he sends Eli along with Rush and other science and military personnel. Air Part 2 is another cracking episode of Stargate Universe, difficult to really judge it as a standalone given it was meant to be part of a feature but the episode has everything. There is great dialogue and character interaction, some mighty fine visual effects and the narrative continues to expand helped by more titbits of information on the ship and the people who are currently resident. Once again we want to think Jeff and Steve for joining us for the show and they will both be back next week. Gatecast 311 SGU Air Part 1

Air Part 1 Welcome to our very first look at Stargate Universe and the first episode Air Part 1 which in this case is part of the extended release on the DVD/Blu-ray, for the purposes of the podcast we cut the double episode in half and will be looking at Air Part 2 next week. The story of Stargate Universe begins with the view of the Destiny (as we come to learn) and onboard the activation of a Stargate, by mixing up the timelines we learn that the SGC has an off world base codenamed Icarus which is using the geo-thermal properties of an alien world to power its Stargate and access the ninth chevron. The complexities of energy manipulation has prevented a successful activation until the puzzle is sent out into the real world by means of a computer game. This game is solved by Eli Wallace (played by David Blue) who is then shanghaied by General O’Neill and brought to Icarus to work with Dr Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle) and along for the ride comes the Senator who was instrumental in securing the funding for the base and his daughter who came up with the idea to exploit gamers. During the visit the base comes under attack from the Lucian Alliance and Eli has a flash of inspiration, the symbols required are not just an address but also incorporate a code, the Earth symbol should not work but when used the wormhole is opened and with no other option the survivors of Icarus flee through the gate. They arrive on board Destiny with many injuries including Colonel Young (Louis Ferreira) and begin to explore not realising at first they are onboard a starship billions of light years away from the Milky Way and Earth… Well there you go the first look at Stargate Universe and it was far better than I remembered infact all three parts of Air were a very rewarding viewing experience. The main cast is incredible and as you would expect the Stargate producers have made full use of continuity and the acting pool of Stargate veterans to populate the screen, it paid off big time for those of us who are familiar with the franchise. The production quality right from the start was incredible for television and felt very different to what SG1 and Atlantis has offered in the years before, as it turned out that may have played a part in the show only getting two seasons but those two seasons are an adventure to say the least:) We’ve got to thank Jeff for returning to the podcast (sucker for punishment) and our first timer Steve who is a veteran podcaster in his own right. Together with myself and Alan I think we did one of our better episode commentaries/discussions, the fourth voice I think added that extra something and for once Skype was well behaved. So next week we are back with the same line up and taking a look at Air Part 2, we hope you join us and we want your feedback on the podcast and Stargate Universe, if nothing else SGU generated discussion in the Stargate fan community:) Promo… SciFi Diner Podcast Links… Air Part 1 IMDB Air Part 1 Wiki Robert Carlyle Louis Ferreira Lou Diamond Phillips Christopher McDonald Brian J. Gatecast Interview Keith R. A. DeCandido

Keith R. A. DeCandido Well here we are with something a little different, an interview with the author Keith R. A. DeCandido. Keith is a New Yorker born and bred who took to literature at a very early age encouraged by his parents with an interesting choice of authors. You may want to think back to what you were reading as a youngster then compare it to Keith’s reading list, for me a world of difference:) Keith is also a professional editor and has written his own original novels as well as making full use of  licensed content and novelisations. His media and online endeavours populate an extensive list of accomplishments, check the links you will be amazed. Join Alan and Mike on this podcast as we chat with Keith about his work in the media and more specifically the appeal of Stargate and the result of said interest with his new novel “Kali’s Wrath” which was released on May 19th as an ebook and the paperback is out soon. We want to thank Keith for giving us his time and since the interview was recorded a few days before the book was released and this podcast is being released a few days after I have tagged on a small review of the novel at the end of the interview, spoiler free. Next week we are going to be kicking off our Stargate Universe adventure starting with Air Part 1, Steve and Jeff joined us for that so gear up it turned out rather well:) Links… Twitter DeCandidio Net Kradical Wiki Facebook Tor Kali’s Wrath Amazon UK Amazon US Crossroad Press Smashwords   The post Gatecast Interview Keith R.
