The Final Days of Socrates Audiobook by Plato
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Final Days of Socrates Author: Plato Narrator: Ray Atherton, Donal Donnelly Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 3 mins Language: English Release date: 12-16-99 Publisher: Recorded Books Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 26 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Plato recorded the final days of his mentor, Socrates, who was tried and condemned in Athens in 399 B.C. on trumped-up charges of being a heretic and corrupter of the young. This collection comprises 4 books: Euthyphro, in which Socrates engages Euthyphro in a debate on the steps of the courthouse where he is to stand trial, The Apology, in which Socrates argues on his own behalf, Crito, in which Socrates's friends and supporters visit him in prison and urge him to recant, and Phaedo, in which there is a debate on the destination of the soul, and, eventually, the philosopher's end. Editorial Reviews: Precocious children are often jokingly scolded for being too smart for their own good. For the Greek philosopher, Socrates, there was no joking when his punishment was levied. The great thinker proved to actually be too great a thinker, and thus was put on trial and sentenced to death. Here in four books, performed with a polished clarity by Ray Atherton and Donal Donnelly, are Plato's records of his mentor, Socrates', final days. These dialogues not only catalog the events of Socrates's end, but offer invaluable debate on piety, justice, and the soul.

Aristotle collected and studied the constitutions of over 150 city states before writing his Politics. (P)1990 Jimcin Recordings Editorial Reviews: "Every state is a community of some kind, and every community is established with a view to some good; for mankind always act in order to obtain that which they think good," writes Greek philosopher Aristotle in the first line of his authoritative treatise Politics, in which he examines human affairs. The text is the culmination of his research on more than 150 city states and their constitutions. Jim Killaveys solemn and clear voice complements the weighty material, making it easy to digest.

The Meditations: An Emperor's Guide to Mastery Audiobook
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Meditations: An Emperor's Guide to Mastery Author: Sam Torode, Ancient Renewal, Marcus Aurelius Narrator: Sam Torode Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 23 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: Ancient Renewal Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 6 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: How to think clearly, act purposefully, overcome any obstacle, and find peace and happiness along the way. Marcus Aurelius (121-180 CE) was one of the few true philosopher-kings in history. His father died when Marcus was three. At age fifteen, he was adopted by Emperor Antoninus Pius, putting him in the line of succession; and at 40, Marcus became a reluctant emperor of the Roman Empire. Marcus was reluctant because the demands of being emperor - on top of the temptations of wealth and power - seemed incompatible with his true ambition: to be a humble student of philosophy. Over time, though, Marcus worked out a practical philosophy that kept him grounded amidst the stresses and excesses of palace life. That's why his philosophy is so relevant to us today, in the modern world. The Meditations is a collection of Marcus' personal journal entries. They were not intended for publication but to remind Marcus himself of his principles and priorities. As a result, they are intimate, direct, and extremely useful. This new edition is rendered in contemporary English, with a foreword by Sam Torode. A companion volume, The Manual: A Philosopher's Guide to Life, is also available from Ancient Renewal.

Histories Audiobook by Herodotus
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Histories Author: Herodotus Narrator: Alastair Cameron Format: Unabridged Length: 27 hrs and 9 mins Language: English Release date: 11-30-17 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 10 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: When it comes to classic literature, Histories by Herodotus is one of the masterpieces. In this classic, Herodotus tells of how a group of Greek states banded together to defeat the mighty Persian Empire. Throughout the story, Herodotus includes colorful descriptions of Egypt, as well as tales of lake dwellers in Europe and even a dog that can heal the ill and ants that dig gold from the earth. Although the line between fact and legend is blurred in this account, Herodotus does provide some interesting insight into the way ancient Greeks viewed the world around them. Born in Halicarnassus in about the fifth century, Herodotus is known as the father of history. He was the first person known to collect and record history in a systematic way. Although there are questions as to the accuracy of his histories, Herodotuss accounts do provide snapshots of that time period in history.

The Socratic Dialogues: Early Period, Volume 1 Audiobook by Plato, Benjamin Jowett - translator
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Socratic Dialogues: Early Period, Volume 1 Subtitle: The Apology, Crito, Charmides, Laches, Lysis, Menexenus, Ion Author: Plato, Benjamin Jowett - translator Narrator: David Rintoul, full cast Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 32 mins Language: English Release date: 10-16-17 Publisher: Ukemi Audiobooks Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Here are the Socratic Dialogues presented as Plato designed them to be - living discussions between friends and protagonists, with the personality of Socrates himself coming alive as he deals with a host of subjects, from justice and inspiration to courage, poetry and the gods. Plato's Socratic Dialogues provide a bedrock for classical Western philosophy. For centuries they have been read, studied and discussed via the flat pages of books, but the ideal medium for them is the spoken word. Some are genuine dialogues while some are dialogues reported by a narrator supposedly at a later date. Ukemi Audiobooks presents all of the Socratic Dialogues in a series of recordings divided into Early Period (Volumes 1 & 2), Middle Period (Volumes 1 & 2) and Late Period (Volume 1) - based on their likely composition by Plato. This opening volume starts with perhaps the most famous speech, The Apology, Socrates' doomed defence against the charge of heresy and corrupting the young. It is followed by Crito, in which Socrates' friend offers to spirit him out of Athens to avoid execution. Among the others are discussions on Courage (Laches), and Friendship (Lysis). The role of Socrates is taken by David Rintoul, a widely admired and experienced audiobook reader who studied philosophy at university before taking a different path to RADA, TV, theatre and film. He is joined by a broad range of readers, most known to Audible listeners. Each Dialogue is prefaced with a short introduction to set the scene for newcomers to Plato. Translation: Benjamin Jowett.

Title: House of Names Author: Colm Tóibín Narrator: Charlie Anson, Pippa Nixon, Juliet Stevenson Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 47 mins Language: English Release date: 08-01-17 Publisher: Bolinda Publishing Pty Ltd Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: From the thrilling imagination of best-selling, award-winning Colm Tóibín comes this ambitious, violent and modern retelling of one of our oldest and most enduring stories. 'They cut her hair before they dragged her to the place of sacrifice. Her mouth was gagged to stop her cursing her father, her cowardly, two-tongued father. Nonetheless, they heard her muffled screams.' On the day of his daughter's wedding, Agamemnon orders her sacrifice. His daughter is led to her death, and Agamemnon leads his army into battle, where he is rewarded with glorious victory. Three years later he returns home, and his murderous action has set the entire family - mother, brother, sister - on a path of intimate violence as they enter a world of hushed commands and soundless journeys through the palace's dungeons and bedchambers. As his wife seeks his death, his daughter, Electra, is the silent observer to the family's game of innocence while his son, Orestes, is sent into bewildering, frightening exile where survival is far from certain. Out of their desolating loss, Electra and Orestes must find a way to right these wrongs of the past, even if it means committing themselves to a terrible, barbarous act. House of Names is a story of intense longing and shocking betrayal. It is a work of great beauty and daring from one of our finest living writers. Critic Reviews: "Tóibín creates suspense out of the simplest emotions: fear, love and, most poignantly, regret." (Time) "If there is a more brilliant writer than Tóibín working today, I don't know who that would be." (The Irish Times)

The Satyricon Audiobook by Petronius
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Satyricon Author: Petronius Narrator: Nicholas Boulton Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 55 mins Language: English Release date: 07-06-17 Publisher: Ukemi Audiobooks Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Libidinous, licentious, salacious and very, very funny, The Satyricon is one of the most remarkable documents from ancient Rome. It tells the ribald story of Encolpius, a man of active and varied appetites (powered notably by his passion for his favourite lover, the handsome Giton), who plunges without inhibition into the life of Roman pleasures: orgies of food, feasting, abundant sex and escapades. The kind of hedonism found occasionally in Roman mosaics is here brought to life. In the feast at the house of Trimalchio we have an extraordinary account of a Roman banquet where dish after dish - each more extravagant than the last - is presented to the diners, who lie on their couches for course after course. And after all that they still find the energy to indulge in intense pleasures of a different kind. Again and again. There are historical questions around the author - Petronius (c27-66 CE), who lived during the time of Emperor Nero - and the text, which was originally much longer than the sections that have survived. This is of interest to academics but need not deter the enjoyment of the delightfully personal tale that has come down to us. Among the characters Encolpius encounters is Eumolpus, a poet philosopher whose extravagant (and loud) journeys into epic poetry attract the Roman equivalent of rotten tomatoes. Very, very funny. It must be said, however, that this is literature, aiming high. It presents an engaging picture of Roman low life: 'women hot after gladiators or dusty muleteers', old men casting glances (and more) at shapely youths, and an elaborate ceremony to Priapus in an attempt to restore lost vigour. But it does so with style and elegance, full of classical references to poetry, history and philosophy though often with dry, humorous asides. Not for the faint-hearted, The Satyricon is a delight from beginning to end, and especially in this hugely entertaining reading by Nicholas Boulton, which opens with a fascinating introduction to the work and its provenance. Translation: Alfred R. Allinson.

©2017 GOODmood (P)2017 GOODmood

Kenney - translator Narrator: David Timson Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 5 mins Language: English Release date: 06-27-17 Publisher: Naxos AudioBooks Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: "In this hapless state I looked myself over and saw that I was now no bird, but an ass...." In this ancient picaresque adventure, Lucius, an insatiably curious young man, finds himself transformed into a donkey after his fascination with black magic and witchcraft goes awry. While trapped in his new body, he becomes the property of thieves, farmers, cooks, soldiers, and priests, and observes the hypocrisy and ineptitude of Imperial Roman society. The Golden Ass is considered the only novel to survive the Roman period, and the earliest novel to survive complete in the Western literary tradition. It is brimming with slapstick humor and sexual escapades, and foreshadows later works by Boccaccio, Rabelais, Cervantes, and Chaucer, upon whom it was a direct influence.

Jason and the Golden Fleece Audiobook by Apollonius of Rhodes
https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/49/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Jason and the Golden Fleece Subtitle: The Argonautica Author: Apollonius of Rhodes Narrator: Jonathan Keeble Format: Unabridged Length: 6 hrs and 17 mins Language: English Release date: 06-27-17 Publisher: Ukemi Audiobooks Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Jason and the Golden Fleece is one of the finest tales of Ancient Greece, an epic journey of adventure and trial standing beside similar stories of Perseus, Theseus and the Labours of Heracles. The finest classic account comes from Apollonius of Rhodes, the Greek poet of the 3rd century BCE and librarian at Alexandria. Though less well-known than Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and much shorter, it is an epic poem which is both exciting and moving, with remarkably vivid portraits of the main characters, Jason and Medea. In the hands of Apollonius, these are far from one-dimensional figures of ancient myth. Jason is a very human hero, forced to undertake the quest by a vengeful ruler, and though he leads a ship full of heroes - Heracles, Peleus, Caster and Polydeuces among them - he has moments of doubt and prevarication which he has to overcome in order to ultimately grasp the Golden Fleece. And Medea, a virgin witch possessing consummate skill with spells and an ability to be cruel, is shown here with some sympathy, for she is under the sway of the immortals Hera and Athena. Succumbing to their machinations and Eros's arrow, she finds herself on a dangerous path, flouting the will of her powerful father Aeetes, King of the Colchians, to help the Argonauts. And then there is the ship itself, Argo, wrought with the help of Athena to survive the challenges of a distant voyage past Scylla and Charybdis into the Black Sea. Apollonius weaves plot and poetry, courage and boldness, tenderness and sympathy, to fashion one of the greatest monuments of Western literature. R. C. Seaton's classic translation has been considerably revised for this recording by Nicolas Soames, and it is read with verve by Jonathan Keeble.

His conclusion is that happiness is the best possible human condition, though he is not referencing the emotion of happiness. Instead, Aristotle concludes that true happiness comes as a way of life in which the individual contributes to the good of his community, as well as his mind. Nicomachean Ethics also discusses subjects such as the importance of moral virtue, responsibility, and friendships on one's journey to creating a happy life. Throughout history, there have been a number of authors inspired by Aristotle's works. Today, authors of moral works still frequently reference his writings.

The History of the Peloponnesian War includes information on the development of military technologies of the time as well as the Athenian empire and earth sciences. Unlike much of the literature that came out of ancient Greece, the gods are not a focus, though Thucydides does draw heavily from Greek myth.

Title: A Macat Analysis of Aristotle's Politics Author: Katherine Berrisford, Riley Quinn Narrator: Macat.com Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 41 mins Language: English Release date: 06-06-16 Publisher: Macat International Limited. Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Politics is one of the first books ever to investigate the concept of political philosophy. Written by the famous Greek thinker Aristotle in the fourth century BCE, it focuses on trying to understand how best to create political communities that support, serve, and improve their citizens. Aristotle investigates a number of different areas before drawing conclusions. These include an examination of existing regimes to see which are best, a look at political theories, and even an exploration of the systems of education. He comes to the conclusion that people form political groups because they want to be better human beings. The state should therefore support them in their quest by establishing a good constitution and making laws prudently. Politics was the starting point for political science studies as we know them. Not only are outcomes observed, but also the reasons behind those outcomes are examined. Aristotle's book continues to be useful to political theorists over 2,000 years after it was written.

From the explosive confrontation between Achilles, the greatest warrior at Troy, and Agamemnon, the inept leader of the Greeks, through to its tragic conclusion, The Iliad explores the abiding, blighting facts of war. Soldier and civilian, victor and vanquished, hero and coward, men, women, young, old - The Iliad evokes in poignant, searing detail the fate of every life ravaged by the Trojan War. And, as told by Homer, this ancient tale of a particular Bronze Age conflict becomes a sublime and sweeping evocation of the destruction of war throughout the ages. Carved close to the original Greek, acclaimed classicist Caroline Alexander's new translation is swift and lean, with the driving cadence of its source - a translation epic in scale yet devastating in its precision and power. Title: Aristotle's Poetics Author: Aristotle Narrator: Ray Childs Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 24 mins Language: English Release date: 04-04-16 Publisher: Agora, New Internet Technologies Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 42 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Aristotle's Poetics is best known for its definitions and analyses of tragedy and comedy, but it also applies to truth and beauty as they are manifested in the other arts. In our age, when the natural and social sciences have dominated the quest for truth, it is helpful to consider why Aristotle claimed poetry is more philosophical and more significant than history. Like so many other works by Aristotle, the Poetics has dominated the way we have thought about all forms of dramatic performance in Europe and America ever since. The essence of poetry lies in its ability to transcend the particulars of everyday experience and articulate universals, not merely what has happened but what might happen and what ought to happen. © Agora Publications

Title: Greek Mythology Subtitle: Greek Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, Heroines, Monsters, and Classic Greek Myths of All Time Author: Lance Hightower Narrator: Jim D Johnston Format: Unabridged Length: 3 hrs and 47 mins Language: English Release date: 12-28-15 Publisher: Make Profits Easy LLC Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 5 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Some of the best stories about Ancient Greece are mixed with actual historical events: equal parts truth and fantasy, and that's what makes them so intriguing. The Trojan War for example, in which we see the hero Achilles, the bulwark of the Greek army who saved the kidnapped Helen, is told from the perspective of his goddess mother. But did you know that according to the ancient Greeks, Achilles had the choice to live a long and happy life or die by his ambition to be remembered as a hero? Even with all the intervention of his immortal mother who called in favors from the gods, she could not change the fate of her son, which was allegedly set by the Fates when he was born. Greek Gods, Goddesses, Heroes, Heroines, Monsters, and Classic Greek Myths of All Time is filled with interesting tidbits about the most popular heroes, gods and goddesses, as well as some little known facts and interpretations about their lives. You'll find timelines and the genealogy of the immortals as well as the men and women who were subjected to their whims and used as pawns to further their intentions. It gives us deep insight into the philosophy of this "religion", into the minds of great thinkers of the time and how they viewed their world - the earth, the heavens, the stars, and the afterlife. But this book is as entertaining as it is informative. Discover how the great Olympian and king of the gods, Zeus himself, was controlled by his wife, Hera, and how something as meaningless as a pomegranate seed fated poor Persephone to being the goddess of the Underworld, at least part-time, that is. Find out about the four seasons, what or who inspires music and poetry, why life is limited to a certain span of time, how each person is allotted certain gifts and why, how the gods intervene, what came before Olympus, and how we got the names of many of our constellations and stars.

Title: The Iliad Author: Homer Narrator: David McCallion Format: Unabridged Length: 17 hrs and 52 mins Language: English Release date: 06-30-15 Publisher: A.R.N. Publications Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 28 votes Genres: Classics, Greek & Roman Publisher's Summary: Most of the great Greek stories and epic tales are initiated over women, which is exactly what happens in the very beginning of The Iliad by Homer. The Trojan War has been waging for nearly a decade, and really erupted when Helen, the wife to Menelaos, was kidnapped and thus launched the "thousand ships" in pursuit of her. This is the reason that the Achaians and the Trojans have been fighting each other for so long. Achilles, who has become hero to the Greeks, is given the present of a slave girl for his excellence in battle. Agamemnon, the king, desires this slave girl, and thus the fight between them breaks out. Both men then draw on their friends, families, and of course the Greek Gods to help them in their specific quests, as both the Achaian and Trojan armies fight each other multiple times throughout the story. In the end, when Achilles has killed the Trojan warrior Hektor, making it seem that he is the victor in the entire debacle, but he shows compassion at the end when he returns Hektor's body to his father, Priam, so that they can begin a proper burial ceremony and so that the town can mourn the deceased warrior.
