Hope this finds you in good spirits? Today I'll be solo-bolo for an 'In Between The Story'. We're going to talk a bit about the "feels" and the importance of not losing our humanness while navigating through this New Age of Intelligence. A topic that always seems to come up with me. Today Rachel joins us, and she has a story to tell."From a Kick in the Head to a Kick in the Ass" is the name of Rachel's memoir. Initially, it was only meant for her two boys. She raised her kids without telling them exactly what was going on with her health wise. From infusions to Ocular Melanoma diagnoses and therapy treatments, she kept her condition hidden from both her boys.This memoir was Rachel's way of giving her boys a peek behind the curtain. An explanation to those treatments, therapies, and, in her words "so they could see life wasn’t bad and, as a family, they made my life a lot easier to navigate."Listen to Rachel's optimism, and her refusal to "throw a pity party" , the joy and love she has for life, and for her family, and the resilient spirit which no diagnoses, disability or medical condition can choke out. We're back!!! And it feels good, too. On this new installment of 'In Between The Stories' we'll talk a little bit about the "quick fix." And, it's great exchange that promises to give us something for NOTHING!! In his book The Art of Being, Erich Fromm outlines two modes of existence - having and being. The first, having, primarily possession-centered i.e. objects, status, desires; destructive or not. Is a life focused on consumption-we acquire, use up, discard, then repeat. And its complete opposite, being, is a mode which is more activity-centered (experience, feeling). As with love, reason or productive activity. It cannot be bought, collected or hoarded.One of the barriers when learning the art of being, writes Fromm, is the "no-effort, no pain" doctrine. From methods of education, with courses made to be as easy and pleasant as possible. Thus, studying too, should be felt as pleasant, and not forced. Where comes this idea of "effortless learning?" And this one in particular was special for reasons that go back to a childhood fear of mine. You see, when I was young I had this obsession with death. I was terrified of it. Not knowing exactly what lies beyond the grave. Is it the long sleep? Without sound, light, and in total darkness? Or will it be hell for some and heaven for others, according to what's written in the "good old book"?Bob has gathered wisdom from over 100 near-death experiencers, and one of the main messages shared is "Love is the highest truth." Hope you all are well, today Alex joins us, and he's got a story to tell.This will have graphic, and sensitive content. It's a raw conversation about sexual abuse, and the journey towards healing. At 23 years old, Alex was biking around the Netherlands, and afterwards felt an extreme discomfort in his pelvic area. What followed was a host of other health conditions that led him on a search for answers.With no results after years of different therapy treatments, it was something Tim Ferris talked about that caught Alex's attention, MDMA. A forethought of wanting to work through his anxiety, quickly turned into Alex revisiting his childhood trauma, and the sexual abuse he suffered by a piano teacher of his when he was very young. For Alex, psychedelics aren't just party favors, but an extremely powerful treatment that has helped him with healing his own childhood trauma and chronic pain issues. He's hear to share some of that journey with us, and shed a light on the psychedelic treatment that's been a BIG reason why he now enjoys a life worth living. Today, Stephanie joins us, and she's got a story to tell.Having gone through the fire. Ridiculed as a child for "being different", loss of loved ones, lack of support at home, trauma from abusive relationships. Stephanie knows the pain life can bring. But, there was a song deep inside of her, that sang for greater things. From her hometown in Charleston, South Carolina to Puerta Vallarta, Mexico onto Santa Barbara, California, then to Costa Rica, and even Guatemala. A refund of $1,800 was due, but was never processed. It was flagged because of fraud. Four years later, and a handful of roadblocks, Gabriel finally received his refund in 2024. Real stories, told by real people.Dealing with a major depression disorder, and anxiety as well, today, Derek joins us. And he's got a story to tell.Derek is a former award-winning sportswriter. He talks about the day he gave up his dream job in order to keep 50% custody of his daughter after his divorce. Since middle school, Derek struggled with major depression, and anxiety. And after losing his career, his mental health would only get worse. When the meds didn't work or seemed to worsen his condition, he sought answers elsewhere. Diggin' into self help books, listening to psychology based podcast, participating in talk therapy. And then, he learning about meditation. And that was the big break through for Derek. He's currently working on completing his meditation teaching certification. With plans to bring to others what's been a huge help for Derek with reducing his anxiety and improving his overall health. Real stories, told by real people.Crystal grew up within a strict religious structure, inside the Mormon church. And today she's going to talk about some of the challenges it presented. She was married at 17 years old, and taught that women are to stay at home, and have children. That's their role. Period, point, blank. It wasn't until later on in life that she would learn what religious trauma was.There was a lot of trauma stemming from the conditions and programs placed on her psyche, and spirit. She struggled from the exhausting efforts that came with leading a double life, and the pressures from the church and her family to stay in line. Crystal also battled with addictions.We're gonna hear how Crystal was able to break free, and take a different path in life. One leading toward self discovery. She'll talk about sobriety, and how she was able to get there. Self forgiveness. Why is it so difficulty for some? Have you struggled with it? We're gonna talk about it today. And not just its difficulty, but what we can start doing today, to help us out. If this is something you've been struggling with. Forgiveness, letting go, and moving on. Easier said than done, right? I know, I know. This is something I've wrestled with for a long time.Shame, Guilt. Disgust. Embarrassment. Anger. Are only some of emotions that come with falling short or missing the mark. Not living up to our own standards, or the standards of someone else - family, friends, society."It is by embracing all of who we are that we earn the freedom to choose what we do in this world" – DEBBIE FORDBy accepting who we are, imperfections and all, we can start to heal, grow, and work towards truly being free. This is another installment of 'In Between The Stories'. I recently returned from Cologne, Germany. About a 1 1/2 hour train ride from where I live. The reason for my visit? - I had a date with Mama Ayahuasca. Today Yvette joins us and she's got a story to tell.Since the age of 9 years old Yvette has struggled with Mental Health. Her childhood was broken up by abuse, and bullying. Being so young, and without any outside support, Yvette talks about the struggles she had with trying to cope with the pain - self harm, cutting, and even suicide attempts. At fourteen years old her mental health and depression seemed to only get worse. Yvette tried therapy, but that was something at the time through no fault of the therapist that didn't work.We're going to hear how Yvette came to find Therapy in writing. Journaling, and that wonderful tool known as 'writing' to express her emotions, experiences, dreams, passions, and past traumas has been a big part of her recovery. Today Allan joins us, and he's got a story to tell.Allan's taking us for a ride, sharing his first hand experience with Ayahuasca. He's sat through hundreds of ceremonies in Peru with lineage Shipibo shamans, and experienced healing from Dissociative Disorder. Allan's upbringing was far from ideal. Alcoholic parents. His mother in and out of mental institutions. When Allan was in the 1st grade, his brother was killed in a farming accident. A chaotic childhood, losing his brother early on, Allan found himself battling with his own addictions. He started to drink heavy as a teenager. Using drugs, and struggling with the inner turmoil, and trauma from childhood. It was at the age of 29 that he decided, enough was enough. "It's time to get sober." Not long after his sobriety, he realized quitting the drugs and alcohol wasn't enough - "what about the emotional hangover?"Dissatisfied with working for the Canadian government as a journalist, and in media. He left a good pension to start his own business. Which turned out pretty successful. But throughout the years, he had an obsession with the human condition -"what drives humanity?" A characteristic he later learned is very common among people with Dissociative Disorder. And this brings us to Ayahuasca, and Allan's very own experience with her healing touch. Today Kim joins us, and she's got a story to tell.As a child, and through her early school years, Kim's family moved around quite a bit. That meant her having to adjust with living in different states, and changing schools. Being Asian-American, Kim dealt with racism, and being picked on and bullied by class mates. She talks about how that affected her as a young girl, and even as an adult.Kim talks about the birth of her two children, and post partum depression. In 2020, Kim gave birth to her second child. As the lockdowns from covid ramped up, so did anxiety, and the uncertainty of the times. Kim's daughter suffered from reflux issues, for seven months. Worried about her daughters health, the state of the world, and business affairs. These combined factors, along with depression and anxiety. Kim found herself spiraling downward.In her darkest time, Kim reached out for help. Wanting to provide a supportive and loving environment for her children. Three ingredients that helped Kim with her recovery : her faith in God, a supportive husband, and therapy. In a much better place, Kim has been able to grow and establish her own photography business, based in San Diego, California.Creating, performing, and striving, for her children, husband, and love for photography. Today Justin joins us, and he's got a story to tell.From a small town in Montana with a population of roughly 300 people. Justin enjoyed time as a child. Remembering the times his mother would take him up to the mountains in a jeep. But things would get a little shaky as he got older. As a teenager, rumors and false accusations began to spread about him. It turned ugly quick. And he was bullied because of it. Being harassed, and threatened in and out of school. And an angry mob of teens, attacking him, out of fear, Justin dropped out of school. He refused to go out in public, stayed inside, and completely out of sight.Reflecting back as an adult, Justin talks with us about what he was going through as a child. As well as the emotions, pain, fears, and destructive habits that would follow-- heavy drinking, gambling, and depression. Destroying his health, relationships, and desire to live. Eventually he hit a wall, and became sick of the person he had become. And that's when things started to change. He's now enjoying life on his terms. With being creative, traveling, and enjoying a healthy relationship with both his daughters. Today Jonathan joins us, and he's got a story to tell.Originally from Ecuador. Life as a kid was pretty normal for Jonathan. He played soccer, hung out with friends, and enjoyed time with family. But at 12, life would completely change. Countless hospital visits, and huge medical cost with trying to find a treatment for his condition. Left no results. Eventually, with nothing, but the clothes on their back. Jonathan and his mother left for Canada. Seeking any kind of assistance, medically, that might help save his life. Having survived cancer twice. Jonathan recalls one of many, near death experiences.He's also a recipient of a bone marrow transplant. 10 people underwent surgery at the same time as Jonathan, only 2 are still alive. Through the pain his body endured, the effects from chemo therapy and radiation, graft versus host disease, and a long list of other complications. He's still hopeful for the future, and doing much better.Along with the medical staff and their support, his mother was a big reason he was able to keep fighting and stand strong. Talk about the unconditional and unwavering love a mother can have for their child. In his own words, "she was the only reason I kept fighting and held on." He also acknowledged gratitude (offline, after recording) towards the donor (from Germany) who was his perfect match. Making the transplant possible, and a success. Jonathan might be the first to give someone else credit before he gives it to himself. But, today we're going to honor this man's courage, and resilient spirit. You're without a question, another GIANT AMONGST US. Today, Ethan joins us and he has a story to tell.In school, everything came pretty easy for Ethan. His teachers considered him gifted. But, not too long into high school, he started noticing a change - depression, feeling sluggish and tired all day, brain fog, problems with sleep. His condition wouldn't get better, and he found himself struggling socially, shying away from people, he felt awkward, overwhelmed with anxiety, which was a startling contrast to how he was as a child.This led him down a year long journey trying to figure out what it was that was affecting him mentally, physically, emotionally. And despite all his efforts - engaging in hobbies, intermittent fasting, changes in diet, psychotherapy, his condition seemed to only get worse.Eventually, he stumbled upon a condition, and things started to click. Upper Airway resistance syndrome, which is a type of sleep apnea. And something I wasn't too familiar with prior to our conversation.Ethan's going to walk us through how this type of sleep apnea affect every aspect of his life. What may of caused it, some of the ways he's tried to cope with it, including a past surgery, and a big motivation as to why he has fought tooth and nail, being totally pro active in his road to recovery, and his big why being music.So here goes, another GIANTS AMONGST US. An abusive home, full of violence, drugs, and instability. D'Angelo took to the streets at the tender age of 11, to escape the abuse at home. He was hurting, afraid, and longing for acceptance in love. From juvenile halls throughout his adolescence to becoming a registered nurse as an adult. Working in trauma units, while still struggling with his own childhood trauma. D'Angelo eventually found himself in the belly of the beast, addicted to drugs, robbing banks, and then came an 11 year prison bid.What happened during his incarceration? How did he handle those demons which haunted him for so long? D'Angelo opens up and talks about some of these questions. He also has his book - ‘On My Own-Reflecting on Yesterday' , a memoir now available. There's children books he's working on, educational material on addiction. Writing, and penning has been therapy for him. This is about redemption, and not being bound to the past. Today Peter joins us, and he's got a story to tell.Peter comes from humble beginnings "I grew up off grid....like solar power house....my dad would haul water, and pump it up this huge hill." He would ride bikes, build mini bikes, wreck a few every now and then. It was an interesting childhood, but beautiful with two loving parents. Unfortunately, Peter would lose his mother to breast cancer. He was only 12 years old when his mother passed away. Struggling with grief, and losing his mother, he started acting out. Although, Peter would be the first to tell you that's no excuse for his actions.Things would eventually escalate. From smoking weed, and stealing cars to meth and heroin addiction. Peter's life quickly stared to spiral out of control. His addiction took him down a dark path of selling dope, robbing, people over dosing around him, being on the streets, hustling for his next high and then hitting a wall - county jail. Peter's made some BIG changes in life since then. He's started an LLC, owning a business and pushing to hit six figures this year. Plus he's sober. It's good to be back for another episode. Hope you guys are well, and in good spirits. If this is your first time tuning in, this is Giants Amongst Us, where we share in the unique Human experience. Real stories told by real people, aimed at highlighting the resilience of the Human spirit. So, if you're in a dark place right now, let these stories be reminder, that you're not alone, and things can in fact get better. There's 2 decisions we're faced with. One of them being to accept things the way that they are. And the other, to accept responsibility to change the situation. The choice is yours. For years, and years, I've struggled with this. I wanted to sit down and share some of those struggles with you all today.I was using and abusing drugs and alcohol for 15 years. Cocaine, hard rock (crack), methamphetamines, ecstasy, and narcotics. These chemicals took precedence over everything else. No self control, self worth or plans for the future. I was only concerned about the moment. Which turned into a vicious cycle fueled by negative thoughts, that led to poor choices, feeding bad habits, and in the end, killing me from the inside-out. It was fun for a time, but "nothing gold stays." In desperation to get back on track. I decided to enlist in the Military. The day the towers in New York were hit (9/11), was the day my recruiter picked me up to send me on my way. I share a little bit of how that all played out and what happened during my short time as an infantry man.From receiving two D.U.I's and spending 30 days in jail. To losing my girlfriend of 5 years, who was killed by a drunk driver. I wasn't in a good place at all. It felt like life had ate me up, and spit me right back out. My mentality for so many years, was to blame everyone and everything else for my problems. How did things change? When did things change? The drugs, heavy drinking, and lack of responsibility and accountability? I talk about that as well. Along with meeting my wife, who has been a huge blessing in my life. Couldn't of asked, hoped or prayed for a better woman by my side. Ladies and Gentleman, welcome back to another edition of 'In between The Stories'. We're gonna get into something I've been thinking about lately, party due to my re-reading of a book by John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down. If you haven't read it, I highly encourage you to give that book a decent read. It isn't very long, but really packs a punch. A school teacher in New York City for 30 years, Mr. Gatto became outspoken and critical of modern education, it's ideologies, history and methods. His colleagues, and staff at times didn't appreciate his way of doing things. But, his students loved him.Today I wanted to share some thoughts on public schooling and homeschooling. Kids are the future. Was it Aristotle who said "give me a child for 7 years, and I'll show you the man?" Those early years are critical for a child's development - mentally, physically, emotionally. As for myself, I attended public school throughout my adolescents. I've gauged some of the conversations on and offline from parents who have children in public school, and some of the concerns seem to involve the safety, and lack of support for their child's needs. Over the years there's been an uptick with parents pulling their kids out of public school. Have you noticed that in your area?And on the flip side, you have parents and children who had a negative experience with homeschooling. Suggesting more resources toward public education - adequate teacher training, sufficient funding. When these 2 needs are met, progress can be made. Taking those things into consideration along with a few points Mr. Gatto's book highlights, fueled this episode. Family, friends, and any support once had, gone. All because a difference in belief. Scott, lost his entire family, 17 members on his fathers side, ex-communicated him. Scott left the church 15 years ago, and hasn't had any contact with his family for 13 of those 15 years. In the world of Jehovah's Witness, it's called "shunning - "children being taken ... grand kids being cut off .... tragic family separations"Leaving the church, and the want to remove himself from anything to do with the cult, he eventually moved to Vietnam. And that's where things get interesting - "I would of probably just lived with that traumatic thing inside, and never said anything about it, but something started happening living there." From trying to escape his story to becoming an activist.Since 2016, he's been part of a project : The Witness Underground documentary, as well as The Witness Underground podcast. Real stories, told by real people.Today, F.S. joins us and he's got a story to tell. From the womb, indoctrination is encouraged by Jehovah's Witness. The listening of tapes, and sermons out loud while pregnant was something his mother did, says F.S - "my doctrination started before I was born." Child to teenager, then to an adult, F.S, his whole world revolved around a governing body, the ruling council of Jehovah's Witness.There's a lot to unpack, and F.S does a great job in doing this. Sharing life growing up as a Jehovah's Witness. The trauma instilled in him as a child, because of Armageddon, and the destruction that was to follow -"It made me suicidal big time, as a child, the first suicidal thought I had, I was 10 years old." F.S. also shares with us, in detail, the death and abuse this organization is responsible for. It'll be surprising for some.Just recently (a couple years ago) he separated himself from the organization, and because of it, lost everything. Family, friends, and ultimately the world as he knew it. Leaving him at ground zero, and alone in a world he was programmed to believe was against him. He had his truth, his conviction, and an awakening. But, it came with a price. That's his reason for wanting to share his story with us today. He's angry, and rightfully so. And the reason it's special, is because joining, is one of the big inspirations behind Giants Amongst Us. She's the light in my corner, and the wind to my back. My sunshine, when the days go gray, and feel cold. She's been right by my side, and I by hers. Ladies and Gentleman, my wife, Monique wanted to sit down with us today, and she's got a story to tell.Growing up in East Germany, while the wall was still up, she moved out and headed West (Frankfurt) at 17 to pursue her childhood passion. And that was to become a nurse - "I knew very early that I wanted to be a nurse .... I was 6 years old. My aunt's were nurses, working in a home for the mentally ill and disabled ... they were my heroes. I always wanted to visit, and I would volunteer and help at the homes with my aunt's ... feeding them and reading books to them."Monique would eventually become a nurse, working in Intensive Care Units for 23 years. She also worked in a psychiatric ward and with handicap and disabled children. Monique, after 2 major surgeries - spinal fusion for her back, and a year later, another spinal fusion, but this time for her neck, decided it was time to finally hang up her scrubs and move on.As hard as it was for her, considering how much she loved being a nurse, she decided it was time to hang up the scrubs and move on. Still a nurse at heart, Monique talks about her transition away from working in ICU. She also talks about her recovery after the surgeries, and she'll be the first to tell you - "Even though I have these health issues, and diagnosis, I'm more than that. I want people to see me, for me." She's definitely more than that, and is without question a GIANT AMONGST US. She's happy, full of life, and surrounding herself with things that fill her with joy, and love - stone painting, crocheting, hula-hooping, and giving sound baths are just a few. As I recall two "close calls" if you will, where things could of turned bad, but luckily, not. It's a few memories that I had while living in El Monte, California. A city about 15 miles East of Los Angeles, for anyone unfamiliar with the area.First one happened when I was about 5 years old. While playing on top of the staircase, I fell and cracked my head open. Happened to chip my skull, and might of even knocked a few screws loose. But, the doctor stitched me right back up, and I was right back on the horse in no time. Second one, was a few years later. One teacher in particular, encouraged some of the other kids to harass Clarence, and show up at his house to beat him up. There's a lot to unpack, and what I've decided to do with our conversation is to break it up into two parts. The chunk of it you'll hear in this episode. Clarence has from an early age, and pretty much his whole life, he's suffered from a whole host of health conditions. Autistic (in the process of undergoing an official diagnosis), ADHD, facial blindness, turrets. amphantasia, all of these disabilities may of put him at a disadvantage.But, you can't help but to be inspired after listening to how he worked out ways to better himself in areas where he lacked and fell short. From even teaching himself how to talk. You'll be surprised at that all played out.Clarence also suffered a lot of abuse. Sexual, Physical, Mental, and that led to depression, and eventual weight gain. Over 400 lbs, and sleeping 17-18 hours a day for about a year, he was in a bad place. He's story, as you may of guessed, didn't end there. It was only the beginning. He talks about life for him as a child - an abusive mother, being raised in a cult, and kept away from his father, and all alone. When the authorities, police officers, school board members, and other adults did nothing in response to his pleas for help and reports of abuse. Emmanuel out of desperation and fear, fled and ran away at 15 years old.Through all the pain, suffering, trauma and the guilt of blaming himself for the abuse. There's also healing and forgiveness. And Emmanuel, who credits his faith in God for being a reason as to why, years later he was able to forgive his mother for the abuse suffered as a child. That was a big part of his healing. From her father being out of the picture, and growing up in poverty, to losing her sister at an early age. The neglect, abusive relationships, and "soul crushing" work as a nurse. Pamela's journey in finding herself through all the abuse and trauma is every bit of INSPIRATIONAL and reason why she is without question a GIANT AMONGST US.Finding a good therapist, EMDR therapy, and journaling were a few of the resources that helped her along the way. Her stories a reminder to all of us that "it's never too late." She's now in her 50''s and living her best life - "I love everything that I do. I do love my life now, and I didn't even know that was possible before, you know, before 50. After putting a pause on things for a brief moment, we're back on track, John joins us, and he's got a story to tell. John is a quadriplegic who happens to be 100% grateful things turned out that way. He was in a motorcycle accident, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. John called that moment in his life his "hard reset" - the chance to do things the way he should of done them in the first place.Before his accident, John was womanizer. Addicted to crack and obsessed with women, he found himself spiraling completely out of control, and that went on for years. John shares some childhood memories with us, and life before and after the accident. After listening to his story you'll get a better idea of why he calls himself the "Grateful Quad." He's not angry or bitter with the way things turned out he's GRATEFUL to be alive, and spreading positivity with his second chance at life. Real stories, told by real people.We've a new episode, and a new GIANTS AMONGST US. Today Nate joins us, and he's got a story to tell. Nate's a musician, who's been in love with music for as long as he can remember. At an early age, he was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. With there being no real treatment or medication for his condition, he was prescribed pain killers at one point, and found himself heavily addicted for 13 years. Nate talks about the point where he finally decided to kick the habit (cold turkey), and his growing discouragement with Western medicine.There's also 2016, where Nate was diagnosed with lung cancer - "the middle & bottom lobes of my right lung removed during a 9 hour surgery. Luckily the surgeons got all of the cancer out and I didn’t need chemo or radiation." It's not the size but the fight in the dog, and Nate's got plenty of fight in him. Despite his condition, he's still ROCKIN', he's still ROLLIN' and he's without a doubt one of the GIANTS AMONGST US. From acupuncture sessions, to hot spring waters, floating tanks, and an investment in his own sauna. Plus, the loving support of his wife and kids. Nate is still enjoying life, and doing what he loves, and that's create MUSIC.It's not all doom and gloom, and he's proof of that. Real stories, told by real people.Today's GIANTS AMONGST US is with Cie, from the Philippines. And she's got a story to tell. Throughout childhood, her parents were absent. They worked long works in order to make ends it for her family. Growing up Cie talks being at home mostly, she's an introvert - "we were at home most of the time when we were kids. So maybe that's why we're introverts, because we prefer being alone rather than being with other people."Cie talks about emotional intelligence, and the lack of it earlier on in her life. Did the absence of both her parents during those key childhood years, play any role in it? What's more important, financial or emotional support? Cie shares her thoughts with us and also how Stoicism helped her at one of the lowest points in her life. She's taken back control of her life, and emotions and I'd like to welcome her as one of the GIANTS AMONGST US.After listening to this episode, I'd like to challenge you all. Just give it a week, one week, of not picking up your phone first thing in the morning to check emails, messages or getting online to tango with any of your social medias. Stay away from it for the first hour, and instead pay yourself. Take a walk, meditate, journal, sit outside and get some air.
