Listen to The Shadows on the WallThe Shadows on the Wall by MARY E. WILKINS FREEMAN
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/998135 to listen full audiobooks. Title: The Shadows on the WallThe Shadows on the Wall Author: MARY E. WILKINS FREEMAN Narrator: Julie Ann Marra Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 28 minutes Release date: December 9, 2025 Genres: Popular on #BookTok Publisher's Summary: When Edward Glynn dies suddenly in the family home, the surviving siblings gather in mourning—yet grief quickly gives way to dread. A strange shadow begins appearing on the study wall each night, a tall and unmistakably human silhouette that refuses to fade, no matter how the room is rearranged or the light is moved. Caroline, Rebecca, and Emma Glynn struggle to hold themselves together as the tension among them thickens, suspicions grow sharper, and their brother Henry’s behavior turns increasingly frantic. What is the shadow? Why does it look like Edward? And what secret is Henry so desperate to bury that even death can’t silence it? First published in 1903, The Shadows on the Wall is a masterfully crafted example of quiet, psychological horror—an eerie New England ghost story that unfolds inside a suffocating Victorian household where guilt, fear, and the supernatural intertwine. Narrated with chilling subtlety by Jule Ann Marra, this classic tale proves that some hauntings don’t come from beyond the grave… but from the living who carry what they dare not confess. Perfect for fans of gothic fiction, domestic ghost stories, and atmospheric supernatural mysteries.

Rick Strassman - My Altered States: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Trauma, Psychedelics, and Spiritual Growth
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/831226 to listen full audiobooks. Title: My Altered States: A Doctor's Extraordinary Account of Trauma, Psychedelics, and Spiritual Growth Author: Rick Strassman Narrator: Rick Strassman Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 9 hours 17 minutes Release date: December 10, 2024 Genres: Medicine & Naturopathy Publisher's Summary: “Every reader will find this account fascinating. A lively and intensely personal addition to the drugs-memoir genre.”—Kirkus Reviews “You're such an important part of the psychedelic history.”—Joe Rogan Experience, episode #1854 • Recounts several dozen of the author’s experiences of drug and non-drug altered states of consciousness from birth to early adulthood • Applies the lenses of four explanatory models—psychoanalysis, psychopharmacology, Zen Buddhism, and medieval Jewish metaphysics—in understanding how and why they occurred • Demonstrates the importance of careful unflinching recollection and documentation of both heavenly and hellish altered states in one’s psychological, emotional, and spiritual life Why do we seek out altered states of consciousness, or why, in some cases, do they happen unbidden? What do we see and hear, and what happens emotionally, physically, and psychologically? How and why are these experiences different from or similar to one another? Are they meaningful? And what do we do with them after they have passed? Addressing these questions, renowned psychedelic researcher Rick Strassman, M.D., draws upon his journals and analyses of dozens of episodes of altered consciousness that occurred during, or are intimately tied to, his life between birth and young adulthood. Just as significant as the ecstatic blissful experiences are the uncensored and, at times, painfully unvarnished narratives of less elevated ones. Visually augmenting all these accounts are the striking images of artist Merrilee Challiss. Understanding and applying the meaning and message of any altered state—its integration—first requires a clear-eyed recollection of the actual experience in all its aspects, neither pushing away the ugly nor grasping after the beautiful. This book provides a profound example of how one might go about accomplishing this daunting task.

Title: Only Stars Know the Meaning of Space: A Literary Mixtape Author: Rémy Ngamije Narrator: Anthony Oseyemi, Aaron Goodson, Dennis Kleinman, Janina Edwards Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 19 minutes Release date: December 3, 2024 Genres: Short Stories Publisher's Summary: A vibrant and brilliant new collection of award-winning short fiction from the acclaimed author of the “charming, witty, and incredibly humane” (The Pittsburgh Gazette) debut The Eternal Audience of One. Presented as a literary mixtape, Only Stars Know the Meaning of Space is a work of literature that provides you with a modern reading experience. The A-Side, read as one narrative, tells the story of a soon-to-be thirty-year-old aspiring writer navigating a complicated world. The B-Side, taken as a separate experience, features (seemingly) independent and unrelated short stories. There’s “Crunchy, Green Apples (or, Omo)”, a story about loss told by the strangest of narrative devices: a shopping list. “Sofa, So Good, Sort Of (or, John Muafangejo)” is a first-person account of a family’s history and a long journey towards hope. A group of friends attempts to navigate a recent breakup in “From the Lost City of Hurtlantis to the Streets of Helldorado (or, Franco).” When read together, however, a third world emerges—a complex, intergenerational, and interconnected world exploring the universal gaping void of grief. Rather than attempting to cross this black hole directly, the collection carefully traces around its edges, revealing the enormity of this cosmic force from the “electrifying voice you have been waiting for” (Maaza Mengiste, author of The Shadow King).

Mondrian: His Life, His Art, His Quest for the Absolute | Nicholas Fox Weber
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/752256 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Mondrian: His Life, His Art, His Quest for the Absolute Author: Nicholas Fox Weber Narrator: Patty Nieman Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 25 hours 33 minutes Release date: October 22, 2024 Genres: World Publisher's Summary: THE NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS' CHOICE • The extraordinary and surprising life of Piet Mondrian, whose unprecedented geometric art revolutionized modern painting, architecture, graphic art, fashion design, and more—from acclaimed cultural historian Nicholas Fox Weber 'As fastidiously passionate as his subject's paintings. How wonderful it is to read of Mondrian's gaiety and zest. . . as well as his rigour and unrelenting commitment to his own, absolutely his own, view of art and the world.' —John Banville, national bestselling author of The Lock-Up In the early 1920s, surrounded by the roaring streets of avant-garde Paris, Piet Mondrian began creating what would become some of the most recognizable abstract paintings of the 20th century. With rectangles of primary colors against a dazzling white background, this was geometric abstraction in its purest form. These revolutionary compositions exhilarated, intoxicated, confused, and enraged the international public—and changed the course of modern art forever. Now, for the first time, Mondrian emerges alongside his thrilling art. Here is the life of an elusive modern master: from his youth in a religious household in the Netherlands where he first began painting Dutch farmhouses and sand dunes, to his move to Paris where he embraced the work of Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, and Cézanne, to the 1920s and onward where, surviving the turmoil of two world wars and embracing a rapidly shifting culture, Mondrian challenged the concept of art and invented a new world of undiluted colors and rhythmic straight lines. His work would go on to affect painting, architecture, fashion, and design in decades to come. Here is also an intimate portrait of a complex artist, his solitude and avoidance of intimacy, his eccentricities and his philosophy, his passion for ballroom dancing, and his unwavering belief in art as a vehicle to reveal universal truths.

Smash Hit: Race, Crime and Culture in Boxing Films [Written by David Curcio]
Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/821033 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Smash Hit: Race, Crime and Culture in Boxing Films Author: David Curcio Narrator: Chuck Bowler Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 9 hours 19 minutes Release date: September 25, 2024 Genres: World Publisher's Summary: David Curcio’s SMASH HIT: RACE, CRIME, AND CULTURE IN BOXING FILMS joins Armin Lear Press’ titles exploring the way key social issues surface in the arts. Cinema emerged alongside the rules that ushered in boxing’s modern age and the “squared circle” proved the ideal stage for cinematic display. The public had its first taste of the new medium in 1894 through a heavyweight bout, recognized today as the world’s first feature film. As the two attractions fast-grew into the country’s most popular entertainments, nascent Hollywood studios were quick to spot an opening for a surefire combo. Like a snap-jab to the teeth, the boxing film emerged as a popular genre wherein the fighter assumed his place among the private dicks, rebel cops, and desperate underdogs mired in America’s expanding urban landscape. Devoting equal time to both mediums, SMASH HIT: RACE, CRIME, AND CULTURE IN BOXING FILMS uses twenty films as the basis of a hard-nosed exploration as to how the genre held a bloody mirror to twentieth century America’s most prominent social anxieties, elucidating two conjoined mediums that serve as bellwether to an ever-shifting cultural zeitgeist. “David Curcio’s Smash Hit is a first-round knockout filled with strong writing and deep insight.” -Bob Batchelor, author of Roadhouse Blues: Morrison, the Doors, and the Death Days of the Sixties and Stan Lee: A Life 'David Curcio's absorbing, fascinating book sent me down a rabbit hole of so many memorable movies....and Smash Hit belongs in the company of the best of them.' -Donald McRae, The Guardian 'Smash Hit is not about the sport of boxing so much as a view of American society in the context of boxing culture, film history, and Hollywood gossip. An entertaining, informative, lively read.” -Glen Sharp, author of Punching in the Shadows

Title: The Cop and the Anthem Author: O Henry Narrator: John Michael MacDonald Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 16 minutes Release date: September 9, 2024 Genres: Historical Publisher's Summary: William Sydney Porter was born on 11th September 1862 in Greensboro, North Carolina. At age 3 his mother died from tuberculosis. From an early age it was clear Porter had a large appetite for reading as he absorbed the world around him.He first attended at a school run by his aunt before enrolling at the Lindsey Street High School and then worked at his uncle’s drugstore and gained a pharmacists’ license in 1881. A persistent cough took him to Texas in the hope that a change of climate would help his symptoms. He took on various types of work, initially from ranch hand and cook and then as varied as pharmacist, draftsman, bank teller and journalist. He also began to write, though for now, purely as a hobby. He was a member of several singing and dramatic groups when he met 17 year old Athol Estes, daughter of a wealthy Austin family. Despite her mother’s objection owing to Athol’s tuberculosis, they began courting and in July 1887, they eloped and soon married.Athol, impressed by his writing, encouraged him to get them published. A job as a draftsman at the Texas General Land Office paid a healthy $100 dollars per month and life was good. But then life turned cruel. His son died a few hours after birth although a daughter, Margaret, came the following year. His job had to be vacated but another was found at the First National Bank of Austin. The bank operated informally and Porter was careless in keeping the books. He lost that job but began writing for the humourous weekly The Rolling Stone and the Houston Post. Some time later the federal Bank auditors went through his former accounts and he was arrested on charges of embezzlement.Porter fled the day before his trial to Honduras. Holed up for several months he began to write. Athol had become too ill to travel to meet him and learning that her health was deteriorating he surrendered to the court in February 1897. Bail was obtained so that he could stay with Athol during her final days. Porter was sentenced to five years at the Ohio Penitentiary in Columbus. His pharmacy qualifications got him the job of night druggist. His sentence also gave him time to write and publish fourteen short stories. In December 1899 in McClure’s Magazine he published a short story as O Henry. He was released two years early in July 1901, and reunited with Margaret, now 11, in Pittsburgh. He now began his most prolific period of writing; a short story per week for the New York World, while also publishing works in other magazines. Eventually over 600 of his short stories were published.Porter was a heavy drinker and in 1908 his health, which had deteriorated for several years, took a dramatic turn for the worse, as did his writing. O Henry died of cirrhosis of the liver complicated by diabetes and an enlarged heart on 5th June 1910.

Violet’s Own Author: Anna Katharine Green Narrator: Laurel Lefkow Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 40 minutes Release date: September 9, 2024 Genres: Coming of Age Publisher's Summary: Anna Katharine Green was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 11th, 1846.Anna’s initial ambition was to be a poet. However that path failed to ignite any significant interest and she turned to fiction writing. She published her first―and most famous work in 1878―‘The Leavenworth Case’. Wilkie Collins praised it and it sold extremely well.It led to Anna writing 40 novels and to becoming known as ‘the mother of the detective novel.’In helping to shape the genre she brought many other innovations including a series detective: her main character was detective Ebenezer Gryce of the New York Metropolitan Police Force, but in three novels he is assisted by the nosy society spinster Amelia Butterworth, another innovation and a prototype for Miss Marple, Miss Silver and others. She also invented the 'girl detective': in the character of Violet Strange, a debutante with a secret life as a sleuth. Anna’s other innovations included the now familiar dead bodies in libraries, newspaper clippings as "clews," the coroner's inquest, and expert witnesses. Yale Law School once used her books to demonstrate how damaging it can be to rely on circumstantial evidence. Her career was now well advanced and she was much admired. On November 25, 1884, Green married the actor and stove designer, and later noted furniture maker, Charles Rohlfs, who was seven years her junior. They had three children; Rosamund, Roland and Sterling.Although Anna was a progressive she did not approve of many of her feminist contemporaries, and was opposed to women's suffrage. On November 25, 1884, Anna married the actor and noted furniture maker, Charles Rohlfs, who was seven years her junior. Title: Invisible No More: Voices from Native America Author: Raymond Foxworth Narrator: Jason Grasl Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 16 minutes Release date: August 27, 2024 Genres: Animals & Nature Publisher's Summary: For too long, Native American people in the United States have been stereotyped as vestiges of the past, invisible citizens in their own land obliged to remind others, 'We are still here!' Yet today, Native leaders are at the center of social change, challenging philanthropic organizations that have historically excluded Native people, and fighting for economic and environmental justice. Invisible No More is a collection of stories by Native American leaders, many of them women, who are leading the way through cultural grounding and nation-building in the areas of community, environmental justice, and economic justice. Authors in the collection come from over a dozen Native nations. While telling their stories, authors excavate the history and ongoing effects of genocide and colonialism. At the same time, the authors detail ways that listeners might imagine the world differently, presenting stories of Native community building that offer benefits for all. In a world facing a mounting climate crisis and record economic inequality, Invisible No More exposes the deep wounds of a racist past while offering a powerful call to care for one another and the planet. Indigenous communities have much to offer, not the least of which are solutions gleaned from cultural knowledge developed over generations.

Despite its generation-defining significance, there has been a surprising lack of independent research examining the decisions and measures implemented in the weeks leading up to the Wuhan lockdown, as well as the missteps that allowed the novel coronavirus to spread with minimal hindrance. In Wuhan: How the COVID-19 Outbreak in China Spiraled Out of Control, Dali L. Yang scrutinizes China's emergency response to the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, delving into the government's handling of epidemic information and the decisions that influenced the scale and scope of the outbreak. Yang's research reveals that China's health experts had an excellent head start when they implemented a health emergency action program to respond to the outbreak at the end of December 2019. With granular detail and compelling immediacy, Yang investigates the political and bureaucratic processes that hindered information flows, as well as the cognitive framework that limited understanding of the virus's contagiousness and hampered effective decisions. Yang emphasizes the importance of retaining public trust during a pandemic and underscores the need for transparency, openness to new information, and direct communication of risk with the public.

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/805249 to listen full audiobooks. Title: 10 to 25: The Science of Motivating Young People Author: David Yeager Narrator: David Yeager Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 12 hours 43 minutes Release date: August 22, 2024 Genres: Mental Health & Psychology Publisher's Summary: Brought to you by Penguin. Acclaimed developmental psychologist David Yeager reveals the new science of motivating young people in this groundbreaking book. It is a must-read for parents, educators and mentors. In 10 to 25, David Yeager explains the emerging science of adolescent and young adult brains to reveal how we can engage, teach and support the young people in our lives. Neuroscientists have discovered that around age ten, changes in the brain spur young people to crave socially rewarding experiences, such as pride, admiration, and respect, and to become highly averse to social pain. This sensitivity to status and respect continues into the mid-twenties. 10 to 25 helps adults to use this science to learn how to encourage young people and avoid frustrating patterns of miscommunication and conflict. Yeager explains how to adopt the mentor mindset – a leadership style that’s attuned to young people’s need for status and respect – by following a few highly effective and easy-to-learn practices. These include validating young people’s perspectives (rather than dismissing them), asking them questions (rather than telling them what to do), and holding them to high standards (rather than coddling them). Yeager’s scientific experiments have shown these practices reduce a wide variety of behaviour problems, including mental health issues, unhealthy eating, stress and purposelessness. Young people in this age group are poised to learn, grow, and accomplish incredible things – if only we can tap into the basic neurobiological systems that drive their motivation and behaviour. 10 to 25 offers long-term strategies to help nurture well-adjusted, independent, accomplished young adults, and is necessary reading for all parents, educators and mentors. ‘Required reading for anyone who aspires to be a wise influence on the young people they care about.’ Angela Duckworth ‘One of the most fascinating and important books of the past decade . . . It will change millions of lives.’ Carol Dweck ‘This book is life-changing . . . a must-read for anyone who works with young people.’ Laurie Santos, Professor of Psychology at Yale University and host of The Happiness Lab podcast 'An important and extremely useful book.' Title: Tablets Shattered: The End of an American Jewish Century and the Future of Jewish Life Author: Joshua Leifer Narrator: Eli Schiff Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 13 hours 13 minutes Release date: August 20, 2024 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4 of Total 2 Ratings of Narrator: 2.5 of Total 2 Genres: World Publisher's Summary: From esteemed journalist Joshua Leifer, a definitive look at the history and future of American Jewish identity and community from the tipping point we are living in. Tablets Shattered is Joshua Leifer’s lively and personal history of the fractured American Jewish present. Formed in the middle decades of the twentieth century, the settled-upon pillars of American Jewish self-definition (Americanism, Zionism, and liberalism) have begun to collapse. The binding trauma of Holocaust memory grows ever-more attenuated; soon there will be no living survivors. After two millennia of Jewish life defined by diasporic existence, the majority of the world’s Jews will live in a sovereign Jewish state by 2050. Against the backdrop of national political crises, resurgent global antisemitism, and the horrors of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Leifer provides an illuminating and meticulously reported map of contemporary Jewish life and a sober conjecture about its future. Leifer begins with the history of Jewish immigrants in America, starting with the arrival of his great-grandmother Bessie from a shtetl in Belarus and following each subsequent generation as it conformed to the prevailing codes of American Jewish life. He then reports on the state of today’s burning Jewish issues. We meet millennial Jewish racial justice organizers, Orthodox political activists, young liberal rabbis looking to “queer” the Torah through exegesis, Haredi men learning full-time at the world’s largest yeshiva, progressive anti-Zionists attempting to separate Judaism from nationalism, and right-wing Israeli public intellectuals beginning to imagine a future without American Jews. As it traverses today’s Jewish landscape through uncommon personal familiarity with the widest range of Jewish experience, Tablets Shattered also charts the universal quest to build enduring communities amid historical and political rupture.
