Part of the Growing Up With Shanghai series. Growing Up With Shanghai is a social sound project that documents the culture and people of Shanghai during the city’s development boom in the 1990s. The project follows 30-40 year old Shanghainese young adults- whose own personal development was also during a time when Shanghai was beginning its transformation into the metropolis we see today. What began as a personal project for me, became an outlet that Shanghainese could document their life and culture in their own personal way. Subtle details within their stories document local customs and dialects and touch on contemporary social issues such as remigration and urban development. The stories are recorded in the location where they occurred not only to help the storytellers recall their memories, but also to provide a complementary backdrop for their not so distant past. The stories encompass the entire Shanghai Municipality to also document the Shanghai culture beyond its city limits. The goal for this project is to record 100 people. Walking through their memories, each story brings you closer to the city. The more stories that are recorded, the more meaningful the connection with the city becomes. Each street now has a face and life to it making you a part of someone’s life. These streets are never going to be the same to you again. Every recording has a digital booklet produced that includes hand-drawn route maps, photos, Shanghainese character and Mandarin transcriptions, and English translations of the audio as a guide for people to ideally follow on location, or anywhere they may be. Walking with Terence, he shows me around his neighborhood in one of the old shanty towns, or ‘Peng Hu’ areas, near Suzhou Creek. His story reveals the raw living conditions of all residents both young and old. The Peng Hu neighborhoods are fast disappearing within the inner ring. With property values at an all time high and the relatively poor living conditions of residents barely an eye seems to be batted when another one is lost. Because the areas are usually not historically significant, these areas are the first to go in any new developments. Terence’s soundwalk takes place at night. The dynamic of loud and quiet was amazing, some parts were spoken almost as a whisper to match the general ambience. Parts of his story matched the eerie darkness of the area heightening the senses. As usual, I recommend doing the walk at the same time of day as it was recorded to to match our experience. Chongming Dao is the largest alluvial island in the world and it is a county within the Shanghai Municipality. Mostly an agricultural landscape most of its history has literally had an isolation from the surrounding society only a stones throw from its shores. Until recently, ferries were the only means of transport between the mainland and now, a new bridge and tunnel system has been built to reduce travel time and facilitate its economy. This new addition left some of the once bustling port towns quiet and empty. Remnants of its not so distant past still line the streets now only catering to the local population and waiting for its rebirth. The town of Buzhen was a port town in its previous life. Today it is more relaxed and on this beautiful summer day, it was nothing more, or less, than peaceful- a welcome reverse effect of the new artery. Ben recounts his childhood growing up in Bu Zhen. Although he lives in Shanghai City now, he still comes back to see his mother. His friend’s old house was near the ferry terminal so we borrowed old rusty bicycles from his family to cover the long distance along the main street. Nanjing Xi Lu is a main road that cuts through the heart of Shanghai’s downtown area. Amidst the tall skyscrapers and flashy storefronts is a small nongtang that is pretty rare to see for this address. This story is told by my friend who still lives in the nongtang right off of Nanjing Xi Lu. He tells of a time when the scale of the area was much lower and before the Nanbei Gaojia was built, and Chengdu Lu was just a regular two-lane road. Most of the details are hard to realize since so much has changed in the area in the past 30 years. Recorded March 19, 2010.Zijin Lu was the 12th recording of Growing Up With Shanghai and was recorded almost 10 years ago. It was the first walk that Shen Yi took photos for and when I finally saw them developed I was so happy I finally found the look I wanted for the rest of the project. I remember it was a cold day on the street, and entering the narrow Nongtang, I felt it was freezing in the shadows. Celia takes us around her neighborhood just blocks away from the Bund around the area she used to live with her Grandma. In 2010, the Bund tunnel was about to open just in time for the World Expo, and the Shanghai Natural History Museum was in its old location under the shadow of the Yan‘an Lu Elevated road. She walks along her daily route to school and tells us stories of how it was growing up here with all her cousins and friends. We get lost a little when looking for the park that she used to learn Wushu with her friends after school. It’s a great story in a great location. Maxine’s old house was right at the exit of the new Xin Jian Lu Tunnel. The area used to be mostly occupied by Japanese during WWII and the structures remained largely unmodified until its recent demolition. Maxine and her family agreed to relocation in Baoshan District, just north of the city, two years before the recording. This long 1.5 hour walk takes you through the new and old parts of the area where you can see its development in different stages- old to new. She talks with local residents still living amidst the change waiting for the opportunity to be relocated. We walk past the Ti Lan Qiao Prison, the only prison in Shanghai built by the British in the early 20th century and the old Jewish quarter with its amazing townhouses with intricate brickwork. Her story also give insight to the life and habits of local Shanghainese. If your legs can take it, this walk will give you a comprehensive view of a part of the city that is off the beaten path. Mandy had lived in a small house on Huai Hai Lu her entire life until November 2009 when her house was demolished. Mandy had contacted me after hearing about the Growing Up With Shanghai project on TV and thought it would be interesting to document her memories in the area around her now demolished home. She had mentioned her Grandfather was very knowledgeable about the history of this area of Huai Hai Lu but he was unavailable for the walk- there only in spirit by some scribbled notes on a folded piece of paper.Mandy was a bit nervous in the beginning, relying mostly on her notes to guide her dialog. However, when we finally reached her old house she became more candid, emotional, and spontaneous. Walking down the narrow alleyway that was the entrance to her old neighborhood, it seemed as if we walked into another world. Just beyond the flashy street facades, lay a wasteland of demolished and half-demolished buildings. The few that were left standing still had residents. This is a great document of pre-Expo Shanghai and the changes that were happening to the city we saw and the parts of the city we didn’t. It has been one year since the recording and nothing still has been built on the site. Recorded on a beautiful sunny spring day, Elisa showed us around the area where she grew up. Elisa used to live in this neighborhood her entire childhood and adolescence. Her neighborhood (Taiyuan Lu Xiao Qu) has not changed much compared to the streetscape. She recalls antique markets on Yongkang Lu, the streetside vegetable market on Jiashan Lu being so narrow one could barely walk, and finally meeting her friend’s family in the old French concession house she grew up in. Recorded July 12, 2009 at 11:19 a.m.Hua Ting Lu is the birthplace of the Xiang Yang Lu market which is now located at the Science and Technology Center subway station. Nowadays it is a very quiet street connecting Chang Le Lu and Huai Hai Lu. Some clothing stores and restaurants remain as the only indication of its ancestry. Along this road Pei Hua shares an intimate memory of her past love. Their first meeting was at the KFC at the end of the road which is still there. The table where they sat was occupied when we arrived so we sat at the table behind. Softly she spoke of her feelings about a man whom she met by chance. At that moment, who would have known what the future would hold for them? Part of the Growing Up With Shanghai series. Growing Up With Shanghai is a social sound project that documents the culture and people of Shanghai during the city’s development boom in the 1990s. The project follows 30-40 year old Shanghainese young adults- whose own personal development was also during a time when Shanghai was beginning its transformation into the metropolis we see today. What began as a personal project for me, became an outlet that Shanghainese could document their life and culture in their own personal way. Subtle details within their stories document local customs and dialects and touch on contemporary social issues such as remigration and urban development. The stories are recorded in the location where they occurred not only to help the storytellers recall their memories, but also to provide a complementary backdrop for their not so distant past. The stories encompass the entire Shanghai Municipality to also document the Shanghai culture beyond its city limits. The goal for this project is to record 100 people. Walking through their memories, each story brings you closer to the city. The more stories that are recorded, the more meaningful the connection with the city becomes. Each street now has a face and life to it making you a part of someone’s life. These streets are never going to be the same to you again. Every recording has a digital booklet produced that includes hand-drawn route maps, photos, Shanghainese character and Mandarin transcriptions, and English translations of the audio as a guide for people to ideally follow on location, or anywhere they may be. After almost three hours of getting lost, I finally meet Lemon, her sister, and her boyfriend, Jason at Feng Jing town which is actually about one hour outside of Shanghai. Feng Jing is another ancient water town right on the Shanghai – Zhe Jiang border and its history dates back several centuries. This small town has gone through some amazing changes. The water town area has been renovated and is more tourist friendly but still maintains its local vibe. Not as many tourists come through here as compared to some other water towns so it is still a relaxing day trip destination. This walk is one of our favorites, not only because it is the only walk we recorded that was outside of Shanghai city, but also because of the playful and animated dialog of Lemon and her sister. They talk of catching crawfish in the stream, eating Xun La Si (roast frog), and falling down stairs – all with a laugh and a smile. The sometimes mysterious alleyways, delightful views, and the easy country life make this a place not to miss. Their dialect is a bit different from the Shanghainese spoken in the city. More Mandarin words are mixed in with a few local words that may not even sound like typical Shanghainese. It’s a pleasant reminder of how large the Shanghai province is and that there are many amazing places to visit outside of the City. If you only go on one of the walks, make this the one. 几乎走散了三个小时后，我终于和Lemon、她的姐姐、她的男朋友Jason在枫泾镇重逢。实际上，枫泾镇离上海大约还有一个小时的路程。枫泾镇是一个古老的江南水乡，就在上海与浙江交界的地方，已有几百年的历史。这个小镇经历了惊人的变化，现在已经被修葺一新，更加受游客的青睐，但它仍然保留了本土特有的风情。与其他江南水乡相比，来这里的游客不算多，所以游客喜欢到此一日游，放松心境。这次漫步是我们最喜欢的旅行之一，因为这是我们在上海之外的唯一一次旅行，加上我们与Lemon和她姐姐的谈话十分风趣，十分欢畅。她们谈到了在小河里抓小龙虾，吃烤青蛙，还有那摇摇晃晃的趸船，所有这些描述都充满了欢声笑语。神秘的小道、令人心旷神怡的风景、简约的乡村生活，让人觉得这是个不容错过的好地方。 她们的方言与上海话有点不一样，普通话词汇较多，中间夹杂着少量与典型的上海话听起来不一样的方言词汇，让人不由得想起上海之大以及上海城之外还有许多美丽的地方值得一游。 如果您仅仅想体验一次漫步，就选这段录音吧。

This walk starts down Jiangning Lu and finally begins at Anyuan Lu towards the middle of the track. This part of Shanghai has seen quite a bit of change and is now quite modern. Nearby is M50 on Moganshan Lu and there are quite a few galleries scattered about the area. Like a jewel in the rough, this‘ Nong Tang’, still preserves the simple life that was so abundant in this area before and gives an intimate view into the lives of the local Shanghainese. Echo grew up here, mostly under the care of her Grandmother, and still has family and family friends in the area. As we walk into the Nong Tang, the places that she describes are still there and the smell of freshly cooked dinner fills the air. Toward the end of the alley, we just happen to run into her Grandmother’s sister and some family friends and share some dialog with them. This unexpected break in the typical soundwalk format is a refreshing example of the uncontrollable nature of life in these recordings. It also shows the deep connection that the speaker still has with her family and this location. 走过江宁路，这次漫步从安远路开始，朝街道的中心地带进发。这里已经发生了不少变化，已经十分现代化。附近是莫干山路M50，这里散布着许多画廊。这个"弄堂"就如一个天然的宝物，仍然保留着以前那种简单而丰富的生活方式，让我们能够近距离体验上海本地人的生活。Echo在这里度过了童年时光，基本上她是奶奶带大的。现在，她的家人和朋友仍然住在这里。我们漫步在弄堂里，看到了她描述的那些地方，闻到了空气中弥漫的新鲜饭菜的香味。 走到胡同的尽头，我们碰巧遇到了她奶奶的姐姐和一些朋友。于是，和他们聊了起来。声音漫步之旅中穿插的这些意想不到的片段，毫无保留地展现了录音材料记录的生活本质，令人耳目一新。同时，也说明录音中的说话者与其家人及成长之地仍然有着紧密的联系。
