Betsy Mellor on a Beatnik Summer Camp

Send us Fan MailIdyllwild School of Music and the Arts began in 1950, located in a pine forest in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California. The school was started by Bee and Max Crone, artists who believed everyone should grow up exploring all the arts. They thought nature was the best environment for that exploration. So, they brought their artist friends up the mountain, a mile above sea level, to teach in outdoor classes. The classrooms were surrounded by trees, alongside a creek, with a view of the meadow. The outdoor art classrooms had cement floors, a wood wall or two, covered by a wooden roof or a parachute. The pottery classroom was on a bluff and remnants of cast off ceramics littered the pine needles beneath. The amphitheater covered in grass, and shaded by large green parachutes, still exists today. Wellfleetian Betsy Mellor grew up in Southern California. She attended classes in those pines at the ISOMATA. Here she talks about her father Dr. Norman Mellor, a physician, Camp Emerson science teacher and one time chair of the Idyllwild School of Conservation and Natural Science. The Neuroscience of Fear, Empathy and Altruism with Dr. Abigail Marsh

Send us Fan MailThis episode focuses on fear and empathy in humans and other animals. Dr. Abigail Marsh also talks about our biological predisposition toward empathy and care, how adolescent brains evolved to rebel and take risks, why teens are more anxious than in previous generations, and psychopathy as a spectrum. Find out why fearful expressions evolved to protect us and why we love cute animals so much. Dr. Marsh was rescued by the heroic act of stranger which led her to study altruism. In studying empathy, she began by studying the brains of those who are empathy deficient, or what we call psychopathic. She found that psychopathy is on a spectrum, which includes people who are anti-psychopathic. She also found it all connects with fear and the neurological function and structure of the amygdala. The amygdala is complicated and it has two main axonal pathways which connect it with other parts of the brain. Oxytocin modulates the amygdala in a way that it supports nurturing care, even in the case of danger or threat, related to protection of others at the expense of protection of self, as with caring for those in need and in the case of saving a stranger's life. People with altruistic behaviors have larger amygdalas and people with psychopathic behavior have significantly smaller amygdalas! But there are interventions that can change and influence the development of the brain in adolescence. Children can grow out of callous behaviors. Dr. Marsh is a Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience at Georgetown University where she directs the Laboratory on Social and Affective Neuroscience. She is the author of The Fear Factor: How One Emotion Connects Altruists, Psychopaths, and Everyone In-Between.

Send us Fan MailKeith Stokes, Vice President with the historical consulting firm, 1696 Heritage Group is "dedicated to helping persons and institutions of color to increase their knowledge and access to the light of truth of their unique American heritage." Learn about how the skills, culture and creations of African and indigenous heritage people built Rhode Island, New England and our American culture. “I think the most important thing for people to recognize is, is that for African heritage people our history is so much more than our racial trauma. And, slavery is an incredibly important aspect of our history, it’s how many of us arrived here, but it shouldn’t define us. And there is so much unrecovered history that talks about the people, our culture, our heritage. "I was fortunate to be in a household where it was really cool to be black. I mean, because I was able to connect with ancestors before enslavement, and more importantly who survived and thrived despite slavery, or despite the civil war and discrimination and Jim Crow, and even here in New England. So, for me it was a sense of power and I’m always very excited when I can connect with kids of color, particularly African heritage kids, and give them a sense of the power that they have, and that their ancestors have and again, here in Newport and we invite people to come to Newport, we have the oldest African burial ground in America, right here in Newport. It dates back to the early 18th century and many of the markers are actually carved by and represent early enslaved and free Africans, dating back to the 18th century. "So, we’re very proud of that, because again people come to New Port and they enjoy our  jazz, our sailing, our music mansions, but they don’t even realize the fact that many of the contributors to New Port’s history were people of African heritage. And when young kids get to see that and feel that I can’t tell you how excited they get, because all of the sudden history is not about them, it is them.”    ~Keith StokesThis show is a re-run for January 2022.

In this story, a woman plants rue while waiting for a love that may never come, yet she chooses her own path, embracing her freedom. Though love doesn’t arrive, she still finds happiness and fulfillment."Despite centuries of persecution for witchcraft, herbal folkloric healing practices continue today. The practitioners of this traditional healing use drumming and other instruments alongside rituals and herbal medicine.Especially important today, the song speaks to women breaking from oppressive sexist norms, while embracing love and magic that was there all along at the roots of the culture which honored women's magic. Polky blends Americana with traditional Polish and global roots.
