115. Why Your Job Search Feels Scattered (And How to Get Clear on What You Actually Want)
If your job search feels scattered, frustrating, or like you're spinning your wheels… this episode is for you.In this second episode of the Job Search Series, we’re stepping back to something even more foundational than your resume or interviews: clarity.Because if you don’t know where you’re going, everything else—your resume, your applications, your networking, and how you show up in interviews—will feel unfocused and ineffective. In this episode, I’m walking you through: Why lack of clarity is the real reason your job search isn’t working What “career clarity” actually means (hint: it’s not one perfect job title) How to identify what you want more of—and less of—in your next role The 3 simple steps to start finding your direction How to use informational interviews and strategic volunteering to test new paths Why your resume should reflect where you’re going—not just where you’ve been If you’re a mid-career woman ready for a career change but unsure what your next step should be, this episode will help you move from feeling stuck to taking aligned action.🎧 This episode is part of a multi-part Job Search Series designed to help you land the right role—not just any role.Strategic volunteering leads mentioned on the episode: Catchafire.orgVolunteer Match (Idealist)Free ResourceGrab the Strengths-First Resume Template - ideal for career transitions, whether you’re returning after a break, navigating a layoff, pivoting roles, or ready for a change._________________________________________________________________________________________________Work with MeWant an HR expert’s eyes on your resume?Book a 30-minute Resume Review with Christina - live on Zoom, recorded, and focused on one goal: getting you interviews. 114. You’re Not Getting Interviews for a Reason - Let’s Fix That
If you’ve been applying for jobs and not getting interviews, it’s not random - and it doesn’t mean you’re not qualified. In this episode of Her Next Chapters, we kick off a practical job search series for women who are ready for something new - whether you’re returning to work or feeling stuck in a role that no longer fits.We start with the resume problem that quietly holds people back: bullets that read like a job description instead of showing real impact. You’ll hear clear before-and-after examples and learn how to add scope, results, and simple metrics - even if you don’t have exact numbers. Then we shift to strategy. Your resume is not your full career history - it’s a marketing document for the job you want next. That means choosing a direction, using the employer’s language, and pulling keywords directly from the job posting so your resume stands out to both ATS systems and hiring managers. We also talk about why applying online alone gives you the least control in your job search, and how small, intentional networking steps - including outreach on LinkedIn - can create momentum, conversations, and real opportunities. If you’re ready to stop second-guessing your resume and start positioning yourself for your next chapter, this episode will give you a clear place to start.Subscribe, follow along with the series, and share this with a friend who’s ready for a change.Ready to take the next step?• Download the free Strengths-First Resume Template to get a clear, confident starting point • Want personalized feedback? 113. Stop Waiting for Motivation: What to Do Instead
Ever find yourself waiting to feel motivated before you start? You’re not alone. And it might be the exact reason you’re stuck. In this episode, I’m sharing a real-life moment from this week when I caught myself putting something off… and what I did instead. (Spoiler: motivation never showed up.)We’re flipping the script on the idea that motivation has to come first, and instead focusing on what actually works: taking small, simple actions that build momentum.Whether you’re navigating a job search, trying to get back into a routine, or tackling something that feels overwhelming, this episode will help you stop waiting and start moving forward.Inside the episode, I talk about: why waiting for motivation keeps you stuck how procrastination shows up in everyday life (and how to catch it) simple ways to take action when you don’t feel ready why small steps create real momentum practical examples from job search, productivity, and daily life If you’ve been putting something off, this is your nudge.Free ResourceGrab the Strengths-First Resume Template - ideal for career transitions, whether you’re returning after a break, navigating a layoff, pivoting roles, or ready for a change._________________________________________________________________________________________________Work with MeWant an HR expert’s eyes on your resume?Book a 30-minute Resume Review with Christina - live on Zoom, recorded, and focused on one goal: getting you interviews. 112. "Hope You Speak Japanese" — An Unexpected Conversation
I considered walking out of a tiny Tokyo restaurant because it felt uncomfortable, unfamiliar, and way too hard to navigate in English. It seemed like every head turned when we walked in, the menu was handwritten in Japanese, and then a “free delicacy” landed on the table that looked like chopped-up worms. That moment could’ve ended with us retreating to the nearest convenience store and calling it a night.Instead, I took a bite. It was raw baby squid, and it was actually delicious. That tiny choice sparked a conversation with a local man named Hiro and, somehow, turned into the funniest, sweetest connection of our entire Japan trip. We talked, laughed, and even sang Country Roads together when it started playing in the restaurant. It reminded me how rare real connection can be when most interactions as a tourist are quick, polite, and transactional. You never know what's waiting on the other side of an awkard moment. This episode is a reminder to stay open, say yes, and not walk away too quickly — in travel, in networking, and in life. 106. My Word of the Year for 2026: Present
Instead of New Year’s resolutions that fade fast, this episode explores choosing a word of the year—and why present became my anchor for 2026. We talk about what it really means to be present in midlife: not stuck replaying the past, not waiting for “someday,” but recognizing when the future you planned for is already here.I share the moment my husband said, “the future is now,” and how that landed as we're launching young adults into the world, entering a new season of life, and realizing how often we postpone joy while waiting for perfect conditions. Being present, especially for women and moms in transition, is about letting yourself enjoy what you’ve already worked toward. We also unpack the double meaning of present—being fully here and sharing your gifts (presents). This episode connects presence, purpose, and energy. If you’re choosing a word of the year, I also share how to use AI to brainstorm and refine a word that truly fits. What’s your word for the year? 104. Leaving a Six-Figure Job to Start Over: Renee’s Story of Alignment and Purpose
In this week’s episode of Her Next Chapters, I sit down with mindset coach and former school principal Renee DeVore, whose story is one of the most powerful midlife reinventions I’ve heard yet. After a 25-year career in education — including 16 years as a principal — Renee walked away from her six-figure job, sold everything she owned, and moved to Mexico in search of alignment, authenticity, and a life that actually fit.But her transition wasn’t linear. And it definitely wasn’t easy.In our conversation, Renee opens up about the deeper reasons she entered education, the years of ignoring the whispers that she was on the wrong path, and the panic attack that finally forced her to choose herself. She talks about trying (and failing) to transition into corporate, facing hundreds of rejections, and the moment she realized she had a gift she could build a business around. We walk through every chapter of her evolution — from launching an Etsy shop, to failed partnerships, to retreats, to TikTok growth, to finally creating Sol School, a year-long coaching and community experience for high-achieving women ready to leave burnout behind and design work on their own terms. This episode is a powerful reminder that:Reinvention in midlife is not only possible — it’s normalYour transferable skills can take you further than you thinkPivoting (again and again) is part of the process, not a sign you’re lostTaking action — even small, messy action — is what creates clarityYou don’t have to burn it all down to find your next chapterThe life you actually want might be on the other side of letting go of other people’s expectationsIf you’re a woman navigating a career transition, thinking about entrepreneurship, craving more freedom, or just trying to figure out what’s next after burnout or a career pause, Renee’s story will hit home in all the best ways.Doors to Sol School open December 8. If you’ve ever told yourself, “I should be able to figure this out,” this episode is for you.I’ve been there, too—trying to do it all on my own because I can. But sometimes, doing everything ourselves comes at the cost of time, energy, and peace of mind. 99. Permission to Pause
Sometimes we all need permission to pause. In today’s episode, I open up about a heavy couple of weeks — the kind that stopped my momentum completely. 91. Protect the Asset: My Biggest Takeaway from the book Essentialism, by Greg McKeown
Let’s be honest—“self-care” can feel cliché at best and selfish at worst, especially for moms who’ve spent years putting everyone else first. But what if the real problem isn’t the concept, but how we frame it?In this episode, I share how the phrase Protect the Asset from Greg McKeown’s book Essentialism completely shifted the way I think about wellness, motherhood, and energy management. When we see ourselves as the asset, self-care becomes essential maintenance—not indulgence. This mindset shift was game-changing for me.I share small but meaningful habits I’ve been building—like sleep, mindfulness, movement, and hydration—and why they matter so much in this season of life. Whether you’re deep in motherhood or navigating midlife transitions, this is a chance to reclaim your wellbeing, support your mental health, and show up as your best self. And if you're ready to make a career comeback or pivot into work that lights you up, my group coaching program returns this September. 87. From Empty Nest to What’s Next: Rebuilding Community and Identity
What happens when the community we built through our kids starts to fade? After years of bonding with other parents on sports sidelines, at school events, and in group texts, many women in midlife find themselves navigating a quiet but powerful shift—in friendships, identity, and purpose. In this episode, I share how my own shift from new motherhood to empty-nester-in-progress revealed just how temporary some of those connections can be. And how that loss often shows up right when we’re craving more meaning—in our relationships, in our work, and in our identity beyond “Mom.”That’s why I’m reaching out to you. I’m exploring the idea of creating a space for midlife women navigating this transition—community, career support, personal growth… maybe even a retreat. Summer hits, and suddenly everything is off: school’s out, routines vanish, the weather changes our habits, and even good things—like graduations, college kids moving home, or family vacations—can leave us feeling scattered and unmotivated. If your energy is low and your to-do list feels overwhelming, this episode is for you.I’m sharing the truth that helps me every single time I feel stuck:Motivation doesn’t create action—action creates motivation. 85. Summer Refresh: Declutter with Guest Melina Kane (Replay)
It's the first week of June, and with my college freshman home for the summer, I'm definitely facing the challenge of decluttering! I recently tackled my son Alex's overflowing room after moving him home from the dorm (barely fitting all his stuff in our SUV), a task that immediately brought back memories of my most popular episode with professional organizer Melina Kane.In this timely replay, originally aired in January 2025, Melina shares invaluable insights and practical tips for organizing your space. While my basement clean-out is still a work in progress (a relatable struggle, I'm sure!), I'm making headway with Alex's room, including letting go of childhood treasures like the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series.Melina's advice on creating a "joy day" really stands out to me—it's not just about boxing up memories, but about regularly taking out those special items to touch, hold, and enjoy. With my own children's birthdays approaching in July, August, and September, I'm planning to bring out their childhood keepsake boxes to celebrate those mementos.Tune in for a fun, tactical, and meaningful discussion that I hope will inspire you to tackle your own organizing projects!Curious about your Organizing Personality Type? 81. The 1-10 Scale Every Family Should Know About
Have you ever wished for an easier way to check in on your loved ones' mental health without awkwardness or fear? Today's powerful episode introduces a life-saving communication shorthand that could transform how your family discusses emotional wellbeing.Born from personal experience, this simple numbered scale system creates a gateway to discuss even the heaviest topics, including suicide ideation. We unpack both the "mood check" (assessing general emotional state) and the more targeted "safety check" (gauging suicide risk) that allow families to regularly connect without overwhelming conversations. The episode walks through specific scenarios of how to interpret responses, what follow-up questions to ask, and when to seek professional help. We debunk common myths—like the fear that bringing up suicide might "plant the idea"—while providing practical guidance on compassionate responses when someone indicates they're struggling. You'll learn how to implement this system in your own household, creating a foundation of trust and open communication before it's desperately needed.Mental health conversations shouldn't be taboo, especially within our families. As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, I invite you to take ten minutes to establish your own version of these check-in scales with your loved ones. Program 988 (the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline) into your phone now, because preparedness is paramount when supporting someone through crisis. 73. "If I knew then what I know now" - ChatGPT interviews me about career advice
This week, I’m doing something a little different—I let ChatGPT interview me! The topic: “If I Knew Then What I Know Now”—advice career returners and career changers wish they had known earlier. In this unique episode, I hand the “mic” to ChatGPT (yes, really!) to ask me the big questions about my 13-year journey from stay-at-home mom back to HR professional—and the strategies that finally broke through my job search plateaus. We cover: ✅ Mindset & Confidence ✅ Resume & Job Search Strategy ✅ Networking & Interviewing ✅ Negotiation & Career Growth ✅ Work-Life Balance & Adjusting Back to WorkOne of my biggest shifts? Realizing my unpaid experience had value. Strategic volunteering rebuilt my confidence, and my Strengths-First Resume flipped the script—highlighting skills first instead of gaps. This simple change transformed my results (and you can grab the template in the show notes! ⤵️).I also learned to stop justifying my career break in interviews—because employers don’t need your life story, they need to know you can do the job. Now, I help my clients interview with confidence.Ready to take the next step? Download my resume template and connect with me on LinkedIn.
