Berserkers wore bear skin robes and bear snout masks. Because they ate human flesh, they were cursed, unable to have a restful death, and fated to be reincarnated in their descendants. Six college students stumble across the Berserker legend when they vacation at a campground called Rainbow Valley, a place that was settled by Norwegian immigrants. On the way to the campsite, the youngsters are warned about killings in the area, supposedly the result of a wild bear. But is it a bear or a berserker somehow transported to the twentieth century?

Interview with Writer Jeff Kwitny: Animaniacs, Cow and Chicken, and Histeria!

In the previous episode, Steven talked with Jeff Kwitny about his work as the director of the films ICED (1988), BEYOND THE DOOR III (1989), and LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE (1993). After directing films, Jeff wrote for several animated television series, including Animaniacs, Road Rovers, Cow and Chicken, and Histeria!—which he conceived. In 1995, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on an episode of Animaniacs, which was produced by Steven Spielberg. Jeff started writing for Animaniacs in the third season. Three of the stories that Jeff wrote made it to the screen. In “Three Tenors and You’re Out,” a segment from S3.E2, Slappy takes Skippy to see a baseball game and is surprised to find she is attending a “Three Tenors” concert at Dodger stadium instead. This segment was part of an hour-long episode that was broadcast in prime time. In “Method to Her Madness,” a segment from S3.E5, Slappy attends a “Method” acting class with Skippy. After being disgusted by their whiny ways and incoherent mumbling, she gives the actors some lessons of her own. S4.E1 was entitled “One Flew Over the Cuckoo Clock.” After flipping through too many channels with 90s talk shows, Slappy has a meltdown, and Skippy is left to pick up the pieces. Jeff wrote many episodes of Street Sharks, and he talks about his memories of working on that series. Also discussed is the Cow and Chicken segment that Jeff wrote, “Chicken in the Bathroom.” In this segment from S3.E6, Chicken hates taking a bath so he decides to waste his time. Cow, Mom and Dad are all desperate to go to the toilet and attempt to persuade Chicken to take his bath. Finally, Jeff talks about Histeria!, an animated series about world history. Jeff wrote S1.E23, “Russian Revolution.” From 1998 to 2019, Jeff worked as a high school English teacher. He is now writing novels. During the conversation, Jeff mentions RoboCop, Action Man, Extreme Dinosaurs, and Mummies Alive! These are other animated television series for which he wrote.

  45. 2

Interview with Director Jeff Kwitny: ICED (1988), BEYOND THE DOOR III (1989), and LIGHTNING IN A BOTTLE (1993)

Steven interviews director Jeff Kwitny about the horror films Iced (1988) and Beyond the Door III (1989). Also discussed is Lightning in a Bottle (1993), the drama film Jeff directed, which won the top prize at the Houston Film Festival. While living in San Francisco, Jeff created the sci-fi film Illegal Alien (1982), a parody of Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979). Jeff sent the short film to the producer of Alien (1979), who was so impressed that he invited Jeff to Los Angeles. Illegal Alien (1982) also garnered respect from actor and writer Joseph Alan Johnson, who wrote a script that was titled Blizzard of Blood. Joseph hired Jeff to direct the feature film, which was released as Iced (1988). During the conversation, Jeff mentions low-budget film pioneer Roger Corman, independent film producer Ovidio G. Assonitis, and award-winning director James Cameron.
