Anne Hutchinson gave birth to 15 children over the course of 24 years. Born in England in 1591, she was a midwife, Puritan leader, spiritual advisor, religious reformer, and an important participant in the fledgling Massachusetts Bay Colony from 1636 to 1638 — her role as a mother was central to her life before she was banished. During her trial and banishment in 1637–1638, she was 46 years old and pregnant with her final child. After relocating to New York, she and most of her children were killed in 1643 during a Siwanoy Indian raid, with only one daughter, Susanna, surviving. Pocahontas became a MOTHER, when she married English planter John Rolfe in 1614 and gave birth ten months later to their son, Thomas Rolfe, in January 1615. Thomas Rolfe, who survived into adulthood and had his own descendants, lived in England and later returned to Virginia. Pocahontas took her son with her when she traveled to England in 1616, where she was introduced to high society. Shortly before returning to Virginia, Pocahontas died in 1617 of a suspected illness at age 22, leaving Thomas in England with his uncle before he later went to live in Virginia. While some oral histories suggest she may also have had a child named Ka-Okee with her first husband, Kocoum, this is not documented in mainstream historical records, which focus on her son with Rolfe. Her marriage and son were seen at the time as a symbol of the "peace" between the English settlers and the Powhatan people, and her name at baptism, Rebecca, was interpreted by some as "mother of two peoples". In 1608, Pocahontas (1596–1617) befriended the daring English explorer and adventurer John Smith (1580–1631) and later converted to Christianity. Her story has been romanticized over the years, many aspects of which are fictional, with the most famous being the many celebrated stories told about her and John Smith. Saint François de Laval (1623-1708) was a French Catholic prelate who served as Apostolic Vicar of New France from 1658-74 and as Bishop of Quebec from 1674 until he retired due to poor health in 1688. He continued to work in New France until his death in 1708. He was declared a Saint in 2014 and his feast day is May 6. 1609, an English adventurer hired by the Dutch government led an expedition to find a path to Asia through North America. His expedition led to the European discovery of the Hudson River and the establishment of New Amsterdam, a colonial settlement that later became New York City. A strange medieval affliction caused a mass hysteria event in Europe where people inexplicably and uncontrollably danced for weeks, leading to several deaths from exhaustion. Likely caused by extreme stress, famine, and disease, victims believed they were cursed by St. Vitus, the patron saint of dancers, actors, and epileptics, traditionally associated with healing nervous disorders known as "St. Vitus’ Dance". Dancing sickness or disease was a documented, fatal phenomenon. This and other bizarre events lead up to the infamous Massachusetts Salem Witch Trails that took place in 1692. The exact site of the Popham Colony was lost until 1888 when a plan for the site was found in the General Archives in Spain. This plan exactly matches the location at Sabino Head near Maine's Popham Beach State Park. Later archaeology in 1994 confirmed the location and the accuracy of the plan. English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen Elizabeth the First, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. He played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". The Plymouth Company was chartered by King James in 1606 with responsibility for colonizing the northern east coast of America. The merchants agreed to finance the settlers’ trip in return for repayment of their expenses plus interest out of the profits made. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London. The Popham Colony was named for its chief investor and Lord Chief Justice of England Sir John Popham who presided over the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes.
