Late-Stage Babylon: Navigating the Post-Secular Spiritual Crisis (Part One) | Angie Speaks | HITW 224
Watch the full episode for free by becoming a member of the HITW Patreon community: http://patreon.com/howlinthewildernessHowling with writer and cultural commentator Angie Speaks about Carl Jung, Rudolf Steiner, spirituality, Sophia, A.I. and identity politics. From the heights of celebrity to the corridors of tech power, the rationalist ideals of the modern age are being abandoned. In their place, we’re witnessing a revival of religion, mysticism, and the occult. Why are figures like Kat Von D and Russell Brand converting to Catholicism? Why are Elon Musk and Peter Thiel funding esoteric research and invoking the arcane? Why are U.S. senators speaking in hushed tones about nonhuman intelligences under the cold glare of mainstream news cameras? This isn’t irony—it’s a crisis. In a world supposedly ruled by science and reason, belief is back with a vengeance.Drawing on the insights of Carl Jung and the darker undercurrents of the digital age, this book decodes a culture turning inward—toward archetype, myth, and shadow. As the boundary between the rational and the irrational dissolves, Late-Stage Babylon offers a map for navigating the strange terrain of our post-secular future.Tabitha (Angie) Baba-Ahmed, known as Angie Speaks, is a writer and video essayist. Her work has been featured in publications such as NewsWeek and Spiked Magazine and presently, she hosts the thought-provoking podcast Mystic and the Machine. Delving deeper into cultural matters, her video essays, available on her YouTube channel Depth Diaries, offer an analytical and depth-psychology-driven exploration of contemporary issues.References:Late Stage Babylonhttps://angiespeaks.substack.comhttps://www.youtube.com/@AngieSpeaks___________________________🔥 SUPPORT & SOUL WORKJoin the pack on Patreon: http://patreon.com/howlinthewildernessDepth Counseling with Brian James: http://brianjames.caArchetypal Men’s Coaching Program: http://brianjames.ca/fourinitiationsPersonal Myth Program: http://brianjames.ca/personalmythFollow me on Instagram: http://instagram.com/brianjames.soulworkHITW YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/@howlinthewildernessSend a donation via PayPal: http://paypal.me/brianjamessoulTags: carl jung, politics, archetypes, spirituality, podcast

Warrior Allies & Bawdy Crones: Feminine Archetypes of Descent & Dissent | Elizabeth Nelson (Part One) | HITW 223
Watch the full episode for free by becoming a member of the HITW Patreon community: http://patreon.com/howlinthewildernessHowling with depth psychologist and writer Elizabeth Nelson about myths of warrior women allies, bawdy crones, the healing power of humour and embodied sensuality.“As homo faber, human beings are makers of many things—including the stories, poetry, songs, and images that comprise the great goddess tradition. We have a material record of Her presence for millennia, despite toxic patriarchy. We are also homo faber in our embodied actions that leave no material trace yet influence critical moments in someone’s story. Two fascinating goddesses—Inanna and Demeter—owe their being to the actions of a supposedly small or minor character, which only goes to show: there are no small parts, only small actors. This presentation explores two goddess makers: the warrior ally Ninshuber, who performed a pivotal role in Inanna’s release from the Sumerian underworld, and the crone/midwife/trickster Baubo, whose lascivious dance punctured Demeter’s paralyzing despair.”— Elizabeth Nelson, Warrior Allies & Bawdy CronesReferences:https://www.elizabethnelson-phd.comPsyche's Knife: Archetypal Explorations of Love and PowerThe Porn Addicted Magician (essay) https://thevale.substack.com/p/the-porn-addicted-magicianJames Hillman: In Defense of Pornography https://youtu.be/1EZjekNE2qwJames Hillman, Pink Madness https://youtu.be/2hy0vZPpoDs___________________________🔥 SUPPORT & SOUL WORKJoin the pack on Patreon: http://patreon.com/howlinthewildernessDepth Counseling with Brian James: http://brianjames.caArchetypal Men’s Coaching Program: http://brianjames.ca/fourinitiationsPersonal Myth Program: http://brianjames.ca/personalmythFollow me on Instagram: http://instagram.com/brianjames.soulworkHITW YouTube channel: http://youtube.com/@howlinthewildernessSend a donation via PayPal: http://paypal.me/brianjamessoulTags: myth, jung, feminism, archetypes, depth psychology, podcast

The book offers an in-depth-psychological analysis of what happens when a person becomes possessed by the unconscious energies of the Self. The book also reveals that spirituality is an inherent dimension and one of the most essential human needs. Most of the time we pay little or no attention to these structures of ideas, behavior and experience. When we do, it is often because we discover that somewhere else “they” do things differently. They speak funny. They have weird ideas. They think foolish things. If we are alert, and lucky, we may then wonder why “we” think what we do, why we do the things we do. And in that moment we can see the glimmer of our freedom. Watch the full episode for free by becoming a member of the HITW Patreon community: http://patreon.com/howlinthewildernessHowling with artist and author Enrique Martinez Celaya about the book Tending the Fire: Creativity, Purpose, and the Unfolding Self co-authored with Jungian psychoanalyst James Hollis“As an artist, the willingness to challenge received ideas and certainties is essential, and while it carries risks, I was never afraid of them. Art has nurtured this confidence while keeping it from hardening into hubris. In different but connected ways, art and the world have revealed the beauty at the heart of things, the interplay of tenderness and destruction, and the sustaining tension between transience and permanence. In doing so, they have shown me that questioning is not mere defiance, not a restless urge to reinvent the wheel or reject meaning, but a pursuit of something that endures both time and scrutiny.” — Enrique Martínez CelayaEnrique Martínez Celaya is an artist, author, and former scientist whose work encompasses painting, sculpture, drawing, immersive environments, essays, poetry, and fiction. His practice examines the experience of the individual amid social, ethical, and existential conditions, and the capacity of art to widen perception and lend structure to meaning. These concerns take form through materials ranging from oil paint and bronze to tar, blood, and sugar, as he investigates the nature of art, memory, exile, and the legacies of history.

Keenly aware of the fickle and conflicted nature of the human mind, Gotama and Socrates inspired their followers to act with humility and courage, risk and resolve, doubt and confidence. Psyche's Knife examines the myth of Eros and Psyche as a metaphor for the development of soul in the psychology of women, explicating the tropes of love and power as depicted by Psyche's use of a knife in attempting to learn the identity of her lover. Elizabeth Eowyn Nelson examines the metaphor of the knife from all angles — alchemical, sacrificial, lunar, phallic — and delves into the mythology and imagery of women and knives, connecting our deep past to our present lives and our possibilities for the future with archetypal explorations of love and power.http://www.elizabethnelson-phd.com

Finding Your Mythic Mojo | Dr. Catherine Svehla | HITW 182
Howling about myth, storytelling, dreams, creativity and looking at your life through a mythic lens“I suspected that myth had a meaning which I was sure to miss if I lived outside it in the haze of my own speculations. I was driven to ask myself in all seriousness: “What is the myth you are living?”I found no answer to this question, and had to admit that I was not living with a myth, or even in a myth, but rather in an uncertain cloud of theoretical possibilities which I was beginning to regard with increasing distrust. I did not know that I was living a myth, and even if I had known it, I would not have known what sort of myth was ordering my life without my knowledge. So, in the most natural way, I took it upon myself to get to know “my” myth, and I regarded this as the task of tasks…” — C.G. JungDr. Catherine Svehla is a storytelling scholar and consultant in the field of mythology/depth psychology, artist, creativity coach, outdoorswoman, lover of the Mysteries and mentor in the mythic life. She partners with artists and other creative individuals to realize the visions they hold for their projects and their life, and hosts the Myth Matters podcast.Catherine’s website: https://mythicmojo.comMyth Matters podcast: https://mythicmojo.com/myth-matters-podcast-blog

Make a one-time contribution to http://paypal.me/brianjamessoul“The self-confidence of the warrior is not the self-confidence of the average man. The average man seeks certainty in the eyes of the onlooker and calls that self-confidence. The warrior seeks impeccability in his own eyes and calls that humbleness.”― Carlos CastanedaThe world is increasingly at war—literally and metaphorically. To cope, many seek personal methods of gaining peace—through meditation, yoga, time in nature, exercise, even therapy. But these methods are often utilized to escape difficult emotions like fear and anger. Even developing emotional intelligence can be motivated by a desire to think about emotions rather than feel them. Because the world is engulfed by fear and anger, conscientious people are doing everything possible to eliminate them, which is not helping because it just enacts another kind of war. We are caught between the guru and the soldier and paradoxically enough, both must often kill their emotions to complete their mission, which can leave behind a trail of massacred lives in one form or another. We are suffering from the cultural and psychological absence of the Warrior. Indigenous cultures have always recognized the importance of the Warrior for the human community because the Warrior is experientially trained to honor fear and anger. Without the Warrior we lose what fear and anger can teach us. When we oppose these emotions, we put ourselves in conflict with the psyche itself and no one at war with themselves can live peacefully with others or the earth.DYLAN FRANCISCO, PhD, is co-chair and a core faculty member of the Jungian and Archetypal Studies MA/PhD program at Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California. Dylan grounds his teaching in the depth psychology of C. G. Jung, decolonialism, and Mestizo/Mexican/Indigenous traditions that provide a primordial, holistic, and sacred worldview within which to understand the psyche, to embody its wholeness individually, and to live it relationally through honoring Spirit, the ancestors, and the land.

Faith Without Belief: Searching For Meaning In A Secular Age | Abi Millar | HITW 176
Howling about faith, belief and the quest for meaning in the modern world with journalist and author Abi Millar.About the Spirituality Gap: Searching For Meaning In A Secular Age'A beguiling exploration of what contemporary spiritual practices might offer to a world that’s lost its religion.’ — Dr Sharon Blackie, author of If Women Rose Rooted Abi Millar is looking for something. She grew up in an evangelical church, but after she lost her faith, she found herself searching for spirituality in other places. Torn between the logical part of her brain and the part that secretly believes in magic, and in the wake of a great loss, she wondered whether her crisis of faith was part of a larger story: at a time when more and more people in the Western world are moving away from organised religion, what does spirituality look like? The Spirituality Gap follows Abi as she receives a shamanic healing, drinks ayuahuasca, delves into astrology, experiences an awakening in a lake, and attends an atheist church. Written with great warmth, curiosity and humour, it explores our post-religious world from the perspective of someone who is neither a ‘spiritual but not religious’ hippie nor an angry atheist. Throughout, she asks: how can we embrace ritual in our own lives even if we are wary of religion?

*Referenced in HITW ep 174 with Ipek Burnett"War is a timeless force in the human imagination--and, indeed, in daily life. Engaged in the activity of destruction, its soldiers and its victims discover a paradoxical yet profound sense of existing, of being human. In A Terrible Love of War, James Hillman, one of today's most respected psychologists, undertakes a groundbreaking examination of the essence of war, its psychological origins and inhuman behaviors. Hillman's broad sweep and detailed research bring a fundamentally new understanding to humanity's simultaneous attraction and aversion to war.
