    VP4 Spaceship Noises

A quick take to show how you can use external controllers with your Fractal Audio VP4 to control effect parameters in real time and do whacky stuff like make your delay blast off in to outer space.

Dead & Co - Clean - Althea Intro

A Dead & Co-inspired Deluxe Reverb tone. I wanted something that had that signature scooped-mids DR tone, but a nice, tight bottom end. I found it by mixing a factory Deluxe Reverb IR with a JBL E130 IR captured by Tyler Grund. Clip was a Suhr Custom on neck single coil > Axe-Fx III > Logic X. No post processing. Everything you hear is from the black box. You can get the preset here: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=6499 You can get that JBL IR here: http://www.tylergrund.com/patches/JBL%20E130%20SM57%20C.syx You can discuss the preset here: https://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/a-dead-co-inspired-deluxe-reverb-setup.142383/

    Land Down Under

A take on that iconic 80s guitar sound: it's all about the Boss pedals and Fender amps and guitars! Signal chain for this was: Schecter Strat with the coils tapped -> Axe-Fx II -> Logic X All processing was done in the Axe-Fx II. Patch: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=3982 Thread that prompted delving in to this tone: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/any-idea-how-to-get-that-sound-land-down-under-by-men-at-work.109098

    Heavenly Rotations

A study of the rotary block in the Axe-Fx II XL+ running Quantum 1.06 firmware. Signal chain: PRS Hollowbody -> AFIIXL+ -> GarageBand via USB 1. Clean, both pickups 2. Dirty, neck pickup 3. Overdriven, bridge pickup (with a change in drive using volume knob on guitar) Patch: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=3975

    Watery Chorus

Someone on the Fractal forum asked how you could get a watery chorus sound akin to what the Earthquaker Devices "Sea Machine" pedal does. It's not hard, really. Just move the mix on a chorus block past 50%, up the depth and rate and that chorus starts to sound like a vibrato. It's got a faux-rotary sound to it that's just wonderful to play with. You can get the chorus block settings I used on the forum here: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/seasick-chorus.107667/#post-1288408

    Jerry

Based on a Gear Page thread on Jerry's tone where John Silberman talked about middle pickup on a Strat in to a clean Twin preamp and a ultra-clean, linear power amp to a JBL speaker I decided to try it out in the Axe-Fx II. John's description of that core Jerry setup was spot, freakin' on. I used Tyler Grund's JBL IR because I couldn't find any other JBL or similar IR out there and it worked remarkably well. There's a ton of nuance in these settings. Dig in and you get a little edge, hold back and it chimes. Switch to middle + neck or middle + bridge and it quacks and clucks. Jerry was on to something cool here. The purists, I'm sure, will argue it's not exactly Jerry, and that's not the point. The point is, with a few quick twists and the right IR you're not just in the ballpark, you're on the field and in the game and maybe even pinch hitting. You can get the patch here: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=3802 You can get the IR here: http://www.tylergrund.com/patches/JBL%20E130%20SM57%20C.syx You can discuss this sound here: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/threads/jerry.106370/

    Drive My POG

An emulation of a dirty EHX POG effect. Gives you a low octave below what you're playing in to a hard clipping fuzz. 30ms Tape Delay Doubler

Using the tape delay in stereo mode to create a doubled guitar studio effect. First half is no delay effect. Second half is delay effect. Track was reamp so takes are otherwise identical.

    Quantum Creamy AC-30

Mikko's clip of some awesome AC-30 tones here (https://soundcloud.com/clark-kent-job/axe-fx-quantum-vox-ac30-treble-boost-with-ml-sound-lab-irs) reminded me that some of the best rock tones can be had from a really pushed AC-30. It overdrives in this way that's really compressed, but smooth, and it sounds freakin' awesome with a hollowbody guitar in front of it. You keep some chirp on the notes, but you get this deep grind that all AC-30. Check out some 90s-era Our Lady Peace or Foo Fighters to see what I mean. It's a favourite of Bob Rock and Joel Kosche too so I did a little Collective Soul clip to show it off. You can get the patch here: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=3645 Firmware used is actually Quantum 1.0b1 despite Axe-Change saying 19!

Dynamic Asymetric Tremolo into Stereo Vibroluxes.

Dynamic! Stereo! Tremolo! Fender! I wanted to show off one of my favourite features of the Axe-Fx II: the ability to assign performance-dependent controllers to all kinds of parameters in effect blocks to create things that move and breath and change with your playing. In this example we start with a really nice pair of stereo Fender Vibrolux amps. The amp blocks are just slightly different and they're running through different, hard panned, speaker IRs to give it all some width and variance. Out in front of these is a Tremolo/Panner block set in mono Tremolo mode. It has its Depth and Rate parameters attached to an envelope controller that tracks the amplitude of my guitar signal. If I play harder the tremolo goes deeper and faster, and as the signal fades it goes slower and shallower. It's a wonderful feeling sound to play with; the whole setup feels amazingly alive as it changes with your touch and pick attack. You can do this sort of thing to lots of different parameters on lots of different effects with the Axe-Fx II. Something that's nearly impossible to achieve in the analog equivalent of the world. You can find the patch I used here: http://axechange.fractalaudio.com/detail.php?preset=3613 And a discussion post here: http://forum.fractalaudio.com/axe-fx-ii-discussion/103651-going-deeper-dynamic-control-effect-parameters.html

    Josephine

Live off the rehearsal floor. This was me trying out the upcoming ML Sound Lab IRs. In this clip I'm using my regular Trey A patch but with an ML Sound Lab IR mix of a Suhr 2x12 running Celestion G12-65 speakers. It's got a nice bit of mid-honky to it that sits well with the band. Guitar was a PRS Hollowbody Spruce. Everything was recorded with a Tascam portable recorder sitting in the middle of the room.
