DJ Sister Smalls - Anything is possible
Age appears to be one of the biggest questions for females in the industry. Sister Smalls and I share both our takes on why age really is not a barrier at all and how anything is actually possible. There are many ways we can be a DJ in the world and truly make a difference. Sister Smalls is one such DJ who is finding and living her purpose as a DJ and offers valuable insights and wisdom garnered from her own personal journey. Truly well worth a listen with many great take aways. An inspiring discussion around how we perceive our careers, all the things that come with that and how we personally navigate around it. For those that are introverted, highly sensitive and take a bit more of a spiritual approach in their personal lives, we covered quite a bit around how we incorporate life lessons learnt, the wisdom we have acquired and how we apply that to our profession and personal lives. Sister Smalls shares some tips and techniques around preparing for a set and overcoming performance anxiety. You can find Sister Smalls music on Mixcloud and tune into her Radio Show, “Find your Happy Bass” on Brum radio. All links can be found in her bio. Supporting disabled artists in the industry
It is common to see many interviews out there from well-known DJ’s and musicians; however, rarely do we hear about the grit, the resilience, the determination of lesser-known DJ’s and musicians. There are many voices but very few of them heard. In The Spotlight Podcast exists for women that have a story to be told and unique viewpoints on issues that are seldom heard about. We have long forgotten the importance of community, support, nurturing and providing spaces for people to flourish and succeed in life. This week I was fortunate to have DJ Joolee.B on my podcast. The issues highlighting lack of opportunity for women who are gender diverse and/or have a disability is not spoken enough. Julie and I go into a deep dive about her experiences in life that have shaped her and her journey. Forget the disability, race, color, or creed, this is one inspirational and resilient woman forging her own way and creating something out of nothing. A must listen for an inspiring and grounded talk around how she navigates her life around having Lupus and what it takes to be a DJ in a world that does not recognise artists with disabilities.
