Episode 19: Interview with Mr. Frizo
Finally the wait is over...... My exclusive interview with Racine,Wisconsin urban pop Mr. Frizo. He talks his beginnings, his new album, and the state of indie music. Bio 25 year old, Jon Friso, aka “Mr. Frizo” to Hip Hop music fans, is one of those rare recording artists whose musical style can truly be described as unique. While the Racine, Wisconsin artist creates music that is clearly a form of Hip Hop and Rap, it has also been described as Urban Pop and Suburban Hip Hop at the same time. The reason for the wide variance in labels is that Frizo is able to blend so many styles into his music. What sets him apart is that he is a strong lyricist who knows music and music history, and that he brings more instrumentation to his rap than most even think about. Add to that, Frizo’s roots in a place off the typical beaten path for Hip Hop and Rap, the East and West Coasts, and you begin to understand why people who hear him find his music so fresh and appealing. Frizo is also smart enough to know that he can’t pretend to be some urban rap wanna-be. He is who he is and by recognizing that, he has carved out his own place in the game. And in the process he has also made Hip Hop more accessible to people who might otherwise feel it is not something they could relate to. Recently signed to the L.A. based Marlo Music record label, Frizo is about to truly go national with the official release of “Behind The Music,” his first of several albums expected under the label. While this is the first album to get a national push, it is Frizo’s fourth album since 2004. So once again, what will look like overnight success to some, is nothing of the sort as Frizo has been working the clubs and in his recording studio for several years now, refining his craft and getting it to the place where it is today, ready for its explosion worldwide. Playlist 1.)Ethan Keller- Something Deadly(Milwaukee,WI) Ethan Keller is a singer, songwriter, and son-of-a-preacher-man. Playing a wide spectrum for over a decade, Keller uses folk, rock, & jazz guitar styles, while his soulful, youthful voice and poetic lyrics naturally dive to spiritual depths. Keller may employ Milwaukee’s living musicals legends for a combo, or a loop machine for a solo gig, but every show is original and fresh. Ethan Keller’s full-length 2006 debut, “Face Light”, garnered critical praise, and 2008’s "One Way" EP, is being added to college and internet radio across the country. Having has sold over 10,000 records, and played in 35 states, Ethan relentlessly perseveres; always performing recording, and creating what a listener recently called, “music with a purpose.” Next Show: Ethan Keller has a show coming up on 12/11/2009 at 09:00 PM @ Union Stre... in Traverse City, MI Website: http://www.ethankeller.com/ 2.)Haruko Ohinata-Movin’ on(remix)(Tokyo,Japan) Music has no boundries. This is what you realize when you listen to Haruko Ohinata's first album, "GENESIS". Haruko Ohinata is a Japanese singer-songwriter currently under anything music. (http://www.anythingmusic.net) She was a piano prodigy from the beginning, playing by ear at age 2 1/2, and writing her own songs by age 14. Singing in bands and gospel choirs during her school years, she has a unique wide range of style which consists of a mixture of Pop, R&B/Soul and jazz. As a songwriter, she has written for several famous pop artists in Japan such as BoA, Crystal Kay and many other major label artists. Her first release titled "GENESIS" (produced by Taishi Fukuyama), released winter of 2006. 3.)Gem Avery- Colors(Alabama,AL) About Granted a voice that provides soul sustaining sustenance, world wide musical hunger is Gem Avery’s to satisfy.Using her own recipe, this saucy Alabama raised artist slowly simmered the seemingly unrelated elements of Blues, Country, Soul, Jazz and Gospel and came to serve her signature sound on an inviting plate called Ambient Soul. When asked how she arrived at the term that so accurately describes her distinctive art form, she explained with a positive smile accompanied by a tone warmly saturated with assurance. “I love all music but the two genres I love to mix are packed with feeling. I love ambient music because it will embrace senses you didn’t even know you had and I love soul music because it seeps into the cracks of your inner being and stays there” she stated and continued to speak with an unconscious passion for her art, “Ambient and Soul together is entrancing – life altering even. I want to gently embrace and realign my listeners with the feeling of music...and so Ambient Soul came to define the Gem Avery brand of Neosoul”. The spread of the Gem Avery brand of Neosoul is quite evident. The sound offered in her debut album, GAS MONEY, is continuously devoured by listeners around the globe. Boasting thirteen (13) spirit elevating songs, Gem Avery’s GAS MONEY is an integral part of the menu at mood lounges, soul kitchens and neosoul café type venues everywhere. GAS MONEY is a literal buffet of flawless music production and soul enchanting explorative lyrics. The rich flavor starts at song one with “Heard” which speaks to an artist acceptance of infinite anonymity and moves to the pessimistic-and-matter-of -fact title cut “Gas Money” the hopeless mantra of self-defeat “Fly Away” to the self-enlightened “Focus” to the renewed outlook voiced so eloquently in “Righteous” near the album’s end. Gem Avery’s invaluable contribution to the famine world of music speaks to human beings’ universal and continuous transition between self doubt and self realization. A classic debut, Gem Avery’s work has no place other than among timeless rare grooves. Gliding effortlessly from contralto to altissimo, Gem Avery’s 5 octaves is nourishment for enlightened music aficionados worldwide. Heavily influenced by Sade, Minnie Riperton, Nancy Wilson, Dinah Washington, and Betty Wright Gem's artistic eminence evolved to share common ingredients with several legendary female trail blazers. Her sound burns with the vocal intensity of Anita Baker, it speaks with the vocal dexterity of Chaka Khan, yet it brags with the sassy sincerity of Erykah Badu. For listeners who crave a delicate taste that will more than soothe picky palates, Gem Avery’s perfectly seasoned art is sweet enough for dessert yet savory enough for the main course. The sound – the feel, rather – of her voice is powerful yet subtle, gritty yet smooth, soothing yet electrifying, original yet nostalgically familiar... The table is set for you at www.GemAvery.com and a satisfying Ambient Soul feast has been prepared, Ladies and Gentlemen. Partake, indulge in, and enjoy your prized musical treasure, Gem Avery. 4.)Ian Jazzi- E b so IanJazzi is an accomplished artist and entrepreneur. The song, which is both lyrical and autobiographical, is a call to action to men who abandon their children. devastating after effects of children living without fathers in their lives. About the music: Since its formation in 1993 in the city of Santa Fe, Argentina, BUTUMBABA is a band that has been dedicated to research and experimentation with rhythms and related derivatives to Ska and Reggae. Throughout these years, constant work, the band undergoes a series of changes and transformations in both the human and the product of the logical musical growth over time. Its release was limited to 600 cds. exhausted. Is currently recording her CD with guests from 2d-known bands from Argentina, Mexico and Spain. Among his most important presentations, we can highlight the show with Bad Manners (English band of the 80 '), production in Cosquín Rock 2003, this year's most important festival of the genre, "OYE REGGAE 3" and "Oye Reggae 4 "on the mountain, Quilmes Rock 2005 Santa Fe Festival" Vibrations of America 2005 "in Guadalajara, Mexico. BUTUMBABA website has an average of 7,000 visits per day and is a reference on Jamaican music for the Latino community. You can download this release from their jamendo website: http://www.jamendo.com/en/artist/butumbaba 1ENEMY3 1Enemy3 was formed in April 2004, hailing from Anchorage Alaska. Originally a six piece band featuring 3 guitarists, the guitar work naturally steered toward technical precision to make each part stand out. They auditioned several bass players over a 1 year period, but couldn’t find the right fit to match the groove that they were molding, said to be a combination of Alice In Chains, Pantera, Led Zeppelin and Queensryche. One of the original self released demos was dropped off at the largest local music instrument store in Alaska, where the owner decided to contact the band. 1Enemy3 didn’t take long to bring aboard their new bass player who attended Musician’s Institute for Bass (BIT) in the past. They were now a complete unit. 1Enemy3 subsequently rose to the top of the music scene in Anchorage in a very short time. Many high profile events began taking place for the band in 2006. They were accepted for 9 entries on the 2006 Grammy ballot from tracks on their 2005 E.P., “1Enemy3”. The categories included: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Hard Rock Performance (3 entries), Best Rock Song, and Best Rock Album. Being one of the busiest bands on the local scene, they were also chosen to open for Godsmack at The Sullivan Arena in June 2006. (In the past, members have also opened arena shows for Motley Crue, Megadeth, and Dio). They began to receive airplay, asked to participate in live interviews and showcase events for 106.5 KWHL, 94.7 KZND, and 88.1 KRUA. The buzz also carried over to The Anchorage Daily News and The Anchorage Press. As if this wasn’t enough to keep the band busy, they were offered a generous recording package by Sean Cobb of 12 Records, the highest quality recording studio in Alaska. This offer resulted in their first full length album, “The Warning”, mastered by the world famous Bernie Grundman in Hollywood, which will be released in April 2007. Due to the buzz of the Grammy ballot entries, the band was shopped to several record labels by their representative in Providence, Rhode Island. The only ingredient the band was missing was touring experience. Being isolated from the real music scene in the continental United States, they made the life changing decision to drop everything, purchase 2 large motor homes, and head south to garner a larger fan base and create a lengthy show log. One of the original guitarists couldn’t carry on with the band, and they were now an air tight group of 5. After several appearances down the West Coast, 1Enemy3 landed in Los Angeles in late November 2006, where once again, they are on their rise to the top of the local scene. They have played multiple shows at The Knitting Factory and The Whisky a Go-Go. To build their new fan base they have also appeared at The Cat Club, as well as several other clubs in Venice, Long Beach, Hermosa Beach, San Marcos, Corona, Yucaipa, Yucca Valley, 29 Palms, Downey, Tarzana, Studio City, Roseville, Las Vegas, and Scottsdale. Episode 10
I'm still sick so I have decided to change the format of the show there will be no more talk on my podcasts. There will be some special episodes where the podcast will have a talk show format but I noticed that I was talking way too much and it was taking away from the purpose of the show which is to showcase the best in all genres of indie music. I will do a showcase featuring diversity within the music genres. Send your comments and let me know what you think about the new format.
