127. Mixology & Murder: Heaven’s Gate
Jess and Alice crack open Mixology & Murder and mix the night’s cocktail—the Purple Shroud—as they walk through the Heaven’s Gate story: Applewhite & Nettles, “Next Level” theology, Hale-Bopp, the farewell tapes, and why so many cults target people who are isolated and looking for belonging. Along the way: pop-culture echoes (Yellowjackets, The Rookie), the “we’re not a cult” tell, and a quick sidebar on Dirty John before recipe-sharing and studio shenanigans. Come for the drink, stay for the breakdown of how language, ritual, and “community” get weaponized.Producer/editor: @yunkjunk IG and TikTok: @insidethemorguepod

126. Favorite Cinematic Deaths (Live Episode)
Recorded live in the Yunkjunk studio, Jess and Alice break down iconic movie deaths the way only death investigators can—cause, manner, and the messy gray zones in between. From Bill’s “exploding heart” in Kill Bill Vol. 2 to Tatum’s garage-door fate in Scream, Glenn’s blood-geyser in A Nightmare on Elm Street, the tanning-bed double in Final Destination 3, the Wicked Witch’s “melting” in The Wizard of Oz, and the Bent-Neck Lady in The Haunting of Hill House, they talk through blunt impact vs. arrhythmia, thermal injury vs. accident, layered neck dissections, and when “undetermined” is the only honest call. Plus: why legal charges aren’t the same as manner of death, and a quick dive into real-world cases and effects trivia from set accidents to pugilistic (boxer’s) pose.Producer/editor: @yunkjunk IG and TikTok: @insidethemorguepod

A woman’s body lies near a refrigerator. Around her are typical kitchen items—a bowl and rolling pin on the table, a cake pulled out from the oven, an iron on the ironing board. What happened to her? Was it an accident? Suicide? Natural causes? Murder? This scene is not from real life but inspired by it. It is from one of 19 miniature dioramas made by Frances Glessner Lee (1878–1962), the first female police captain in the U.S. who is known as the “mother of forensic science.”Instagram: @insidethemorguepodYouTube: @insidethemorgueEmail us show suggestions: [email protected]/Producing: @yunkjunkReferences: https://insider.si.edu/2017/10/dollhouse-sized-dioramas-renwick-portray-murder-mystery-miniature/

97. Momento Mori - Postmortem Photography
So, it’s no secret that the Victorian era was a macabre time by today’s standards, which is why it’s our favorite time period. Mortality rates were high, and diseases were rampant. So people of that day and age were quite familiar with the concept of death, and they had a much different relationship with death than we do today. They came up with creative ways to remember their passed loved ones; one of those ways being post mortem photography to immortalize their loved ones…after they had already died (hence the post mortem part). For many people in this time, post mortem portraits were their first experience with photography. This new technology allowed them a way to immortalize their dead loved ones, many of whom had never been photographed when they were alive. 96. A Bone? OH MY GOD
In this episode, Jess and Alice are once again wow’ed by Bones and her team and all of their main character energy. This episode has it all from fires to murders to anthropology. Dr Temperance Brennan, a forensic anthropologist who works at the Jeffersonian Institution and also writes books, has an impressive ability to read clues from victims' bones. Consequently, law enforcement calls her to assist with investigations when remains are so badly decomposed, burned or destroyed that standard identification methods are useless. Brennan often finds herself teamed with Special Agent Seeley Booth, a former Army sniper, who mistrusts science and scientists when it comes to solving crimes but who has developed respect for Brennan, both professionally and personally.Show information: Bones S10 Ep5 The Corpse at the ConventionInstagram: @insidethemorguepodYouTube: @insidethemorgueProducer/editor Dylan: @yunkjunkReferences:https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-61786575https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Daniel_Brophy
