Inside the Writer's Cafe with Cheryl Nason – BELIZE: The Journey To Paradise by William Wesley and Deloris Stamm

BELIZE: The Journey To Paradise by William Wesley and Deloris StammThe book is not as you might expect, a simple travel book about a beautiful, tropical island.  Instead, the book tells the story of the journey that led Deloris and Alan Stamm to the village of Placencia, Belize, Central America. It tells how they were compelled to buy a hotel that neither of them wanted or needed. The tropical air is intoxicating! The aqua-blue seas of the Caribbean are like no other on earth! This story is but one example of how “tropical fever” entangles the human soul and encourages a person to embrace a fantasy they never imagined possible. The people of Placencia helped to set the plan in motion for the couple to unwittingly become a part of the community that they so dearly love now.In the book, you'll hear about the hardships, as well as the giggles that the savvy American couple shared as they took on this project and began their journey to Paradise. This is the first in a three book series. As their story continues, you'll begin to see the evolution of Paradise as well as the changes in both Deloris and Alan.

Inside the Writer's Cafe with Cheryl Nason – THE BOY FROM BROOKLYN by Adrien Martin

THE BOY FROM BROOKLYN by Adrien MartinThis book came into this world October 18, 2014. The book is for the reader to get completely involved with the gravity of each situation. It is a difficult story to tell because of the shifting moods of the characters and situations.  My grandmother, was the very definition of misery. The apartment she lived in was given to her by my uncle, her son. She took us in when we had no place to live. She has her own story. We were so poor there was no money for toys. My Uncle Jess bought me a red fire truck, the kind you sit in and peddle. I was not allowed to take it into the street so I drove it on the roof of that garage next door. The roof was our private playground going round and round. I loved that truck as it was the only toy I had. Boy, poverty sucks but has its advantages: you learn to live without things and it makes you strive for more, willing to do anything to get out of poverty-.Everything this book is, intended to relay the total experience: the happiness, the sadness, and most of all the fear. For example, when I was 6 years old, I was wrapped up in a quilt and hung me out of the window with only the pressure of the window holding me up. The window I hung from was on the eighth floor of the building so if I fell I would most assuredly be dead from the fall. I could see down as my head was partially hanging out of the quilt, a crowd started to gather below. The book is also intended to be a tribute to the brave men and women in the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement. I try to bombard your senses with strong feelings of what life was like for these people. For example, when I was in Viet Nam, I thought to myself this is a murder assignment and I was right! We were there for one reason and one reason only: to eliminate the enemy, to win this war by attrition.

All he only knows for sure is that, financially and professionally, he must take the case and win!Cane enlists the aid of his longtime friend Barton Lisle, the newspaper reporter who covered the story more than a year ago of the councilwoman’s mysterious disappearance. He also recruits his friend and local barmaid, Sandy Schooley.Almost as soon as the investigation begins, strange and sinister troubles affect the three friends. Even though they are unable to connect these events with their investigation, the deeper they dig, the more apparent it becomes that somebody doesn’t want the matter solved.Their search leads them to Arizona. Well of the Three Sisters is a tiny, dusty, high-desert town that sits on property Rita invested in shortly before her disappearance. The property also shares a border with the Navajo reservation where, over the last few years, horrifying events have affected those Native Americans living nearest the town.In Arizona, Larry, Bart, and Sandy meet Littlebird, Rita Stanton-Loy’s half Native American daughter. They also John Todachine, a Navajo engineer, and deputy sheriff Ramon Gutierrez, who believes the answer to the mystery lies in Rita’s investment property to the team. When the investigation turns to the land, a faceless opposition resorts to a less subtle means of dissuasion—guns.Frightened but committed to solving the case, the six forge ahead in their quest, leading to unimaginable evil and a spine-chilling showdown with a multibillionaire presidential hopeful. In the meantime, Larry is finally able to search for the woman he loved and lost to the Arizona desert many years ago, but will finding her only endanger her life?RUNNING ON THE SPOT by Iniobong AwakRunning on the Spot is a narrative on poverty, illiteracy and lack of opportunities. From Mbente to Eniong, Ebiet Asibong to Ine Ekpenyong, Atakpa to Fernando Po, poverty looms large. Yet the human spirit is irrepressible, making the story to also be about love and betrayals.Edem Ikon, the central character, abandons his wife and his village, hoping to better his lot elsewhere. He returns, unexpectedly, after forty years of sojourning in various places, a spent man in his seventies carrying a sack on his head which makes the elders question his sanity, a walking symbol of failure though an unprecedented welcome party is spontaneously held for him.According to Elder Isang, Asibong, Edem's father, was a weakling who incurred the wrath of the gods by bringing into their community a woman from Adiabo who had had a twin in an earlier marriage. "Edem is the product of that unholy union. He is a symbol of desecration and abomination. Nothing good can come out of him." Is Edem's failure, therefore, fatalistically determined?Through a crushing irony, the author casts doubt on this line of reasoning. Isang has led the Mbente army fora decade and he is considered to be a lion. However when the Inokon invaders come on a reprisal attack, he is killed like a chicken in his own backyard and the enemies evaporate without even a rustle of the leaves. As a cult leader, he has compromised his office. The curse on Edem and his pedigree who he despises falls on him instead. The lion falls in place of the weakling. As the book of Ecclesiastes tells us, "a living dog is better than a dead lion."

Inside the Writer's Cafe with Cheryl Nason – Author Interviews with: Jeff Ahlin and John Flanagan

OVERRUN: The Battle for Firebase 14 by CDR Jeff AhlinThis novel is a dramatization of many of CDR Jeff Ahlin's experiences on the USS Kitty Hawk (CVA-63) in Vietnam and South East Asia between the summer of 1969 and the summer of 1971. During that time then Lt. Ahlin became friendly with one of the Naval Pilots from Squadron VA-192, The Golden Dragons. Lt. Dennis Pike flew the A7-E Corsair II and was a trombone player in the ship's band, "The Yankee Air Pirates," with Lt. Ahlin, who played the banjo. The story outlines some of the difficult circumstances, logistical problems and abject terror that permeated the jungle warfare. The U.S. Army Rangers and the U.S. Marines were subjected to many difficult battles in the Central Highlands, A Shau Valley, and near the borders of Cambodia, Laos, and the 17th Parallel, the border of North Vietnam.LCDR Pike was lost over Laos in the spring of 1972. Dennis and his aircraft vanished off the face of the earth. There were unconfirmed reports of him being held in a prison camp in Laos in the summer of 1972.In the fall of 2011 his helmet was found by a farmer in a stream in Laos. There were reports the Russians and Chinese took pieces of downed aircraft and six of our pilots as POW's; but all the pilots were released after the war. The question remains, what happened to LCDR Dennis Pike?MICHAEL DEVLIN AND THE CHEYENNE by John FlanaganPenniless Irish immigrant Michael Devlin arrives in New York City, in 1864, the third year of the American Civil War. With a group of friends from his home in County Galway, he enlists in a cavalry regiment. After basic training, they are thrown into the Union Civil War against the Confederate South. On a reconnaissance mission, Michael discovers he is unable to fire on Confederate soldiers. To avoid the taking of human life, he volunteers for duty with a special unit of cavalry in Denver, Colorado. Michael's mission in the Mounted Cavalry in Fort Weld, Denver, Colorado, was to escort a tribe of Cheyenne Indians from a traditional Indian village to a new reservation one hundred miles away. Among the Indian nations, a reservation was a euphemism for a prisoner of war camp. It was the depth of winter; harsh inclement weather would claim many Indian lives. Beaten and whipped, the weakened Cheyenne tribe could travel no further on the forced march. Michael witnessed Us soldiers sadistically slaughter defenseless braves, women and children. The killings had a profound effect on Michael and change the course of his life. On learning of a secret government conspiracy to exterminate American Indians by means of genocide, Michael becomes a leader of the persecuted Cheyenne tribe. He initiates several triumphant and bloody skirmishes against the murderous Us Cavalry soldiers. He leads the remainder of the Cheyenne tribe to eventual freedom after a long exodus to Mexico.

CALLED INTO THE WILDERNESS  by Gabriel Sosu"Writing this book has first and foremost helped me as an individual person to come to terms with things that are happening to me and around me. It has helped me gradually to discover my strengths and weaknesses, my successes and failures. It has also helped me to see how my day-to-day existence can enrich the lives of others by allowing myself to touch them, by extending a helping hand to them in the name of love. It has helped me to see how my life can resonate with the lives of countless others with whom I come into contact as a man of God. It has helped me to discover as a unique person, amongst the millions, or rather billions of God's creations, that my life experiences can help others also to discover his love for us."-Gabriel Sosu, author, priest, missionary

Very little has been written, however, to chronicle the lifelong struggle of people to understand and come to terms with two distinct sets of emotions, one male and one female – a single soul, at times divided, at times united, by two clearly identifiable spirits.”- Georgia Lee McGowenDear Mom and Dad: You Don’t Know Me, But … traces the life of George through the eyes of Georgia, the female half of their soul, from early childhood in the post war Texas oil fields through the innocence of his early school years in northeastern Oklahoma. With the onset of puberty, Georgia watches the omnipresent feeling of not being normal cast a destructive pall over nearly everything George attempts. After the collapse of his lifelong dream, George begins again with hopes, new dreams and the love they’ve both longed for. Georgia finally emerges, but understanding her part in their soul comes slowly and is complicated by a tragedy of profound proportion. Dear Mom and Dad considers the ultimate understanding of God’s will for both George and Georgia and its unusual conclusion, sharing a story of struggle and self-acceptance.

A country that still can say “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free” (Emma Lazarus). I still want this country to be around for my grandchildren's grandchildren, so let's keep the American dream alive! Hoorah, semper fidelis!

There are no pistols or shotguns visible, no banks involved, and few if any wanted posters displayed in your local Post Office. The weapon of choice has become the keyboard, the smart phone and laptop computer. It has become a merging bacteria spreading like wildfire perilously and dangerously close to imploding on God's moral laws and His judgment upon this Nation. Call it scams, live sex cams, or our youth behaving badly, its tentacles reach all socioeconomic households in this country. Adding to this mix of immorality we have prostitution, illegal drug smuggling and its use, human slave trafficking, domestic abuse, abortion, same sex marriage, political chicanery, etc.Society has created a cocktail of criminal behavior to rival the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. The question then arises out of this storm of immorality is not if; but when God will exact His wrath upon this Nation.

Inside the Writer's Cafe with Cheryl Nason – TRIO by Boman Desai

TRIO by Boman DesaiThe trio in the novel is composed of three musical geniuses: Robert and Clara Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Clara married Robert, with whom she fell in love when she was just sixteen, though it meant challenging the iron will of her father, who wished her to marry an earl or a count, certainly not an impoverished composer. The Schumanns had eight children, and Robert's greatness as a composer was never in doubt, but he was also mentally ill, attempted suicide, and finally incarcerated himself in an asylum, where he died two and a half years later.  Johannes Brahms entered the picture shortly before Roberts incarceration and fell deeply in love with Clara but was just as deeply indebted to Robert for getting his first six opuses published within weeks of their meeting. Clara was forbidden to see Robert in the asylum because the doctors feared she would “excite him too much.” Brahms became a go-between for the couple, ferrying messages to and fro, but both loved Robert too well to abuse his trust. Brahms learned instead to associate deep love with deep renunciation-and, coupling this love with early experiences of playing dance music for sailors and prostitutes in Hamburg's dockside bars, he became a victim to the Freudian conundrum: where he loves, he feels no passion, and where he feels passion, he cannot love. Germany grows in the hinterland of the story from four hundred-plus principalities to one nation under Bismarck. The great composers of the century (Mendelssohn, Chopin, Liszt, and Wagner among others) have their entrances and exits, and the ghosts of Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert are never distant. Though firmly grounded in fact, the book unfolds like a novel, a narrative of love, insanity, suicide, revolution, politics, war, and of course, music.

Inside The Writer's Cafe – Women Who Knew Jesus

WOMEN WHO KNEW JESUS by Dr. Bonnie RingAs you come to know each of the women that Jesus knew, you may be surprised to discover how quickly your own stories are evoked by hearing theirs and how similar you are to some of them. In this way, they may become role models for your own journey of faith and witness. In each of these encounters, you will meet Jesus and come to know him as they did, perhaps for the first time. To enrich your experience, there are questions to ponder and memories of your own to recover.  The stories help each of us to see parts of ourselves, parts we like as well as parts we would prefer to deny, hide, or eliminate. As you proceed, two attitudes will be helpful: a willingness to let these biblicalwomen speak with their own voices and an openness to hearing what you may not have heard before. The stories can help you uncover the richness of your own stories and see them for the sacred wonder that they are.    First century social mores barred women from interacting with men outside the family or marriage; yetJesus appears to have been unafraid to approach women, to listen to them, to heal them, and to affirm God's love and acceptance of them. Often without a name, these women had convictions about Jesus and a sense of security with him that surpassed that of his male disciples. The stories in this book show us that social equality existed among Jesus's male and female followers. Each woman who met him went away from him changed. The existence of so many biblical stories about women is a sign that the history of God's salvation cannot be told without women's active participation, and the life of Jesus cannot be told accurately without the women who encountered him. (https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif)

Dr. Pammy, has continued to work in the burn center in the British hospital in Vienna. One of her patients is former SS captain Leo Lechner.  Lechner reminisces about when he was young and climbed the Dolomite Alps. He recalls the old saying that high up in the Dolomites, there is no sin. Marbach learns from Lechner that there are papers that identify a Nazi escape route out of Europe, and that infamous Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann is using this route to flee from Europe. Marbach gathers up some colleagues and goes on an exciting chase pursuing Eichmann and the Odessa papers.
