Jaws of Justice Radio

It is the intention of Jaws of Justice Radio to investigate how to achieve justice in America, this includes issues of economic injustice, political injustice and the criminal justice system. We want to put a human face on those caught in the grasp of injustice and those that are part of an unjust system. We strive to dispel the misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system.

UPDATE ON LARRY’S LAW FROM MARIA MILLER; CHRIS GILYARD TALKS ABOUT LIFE IN PRISON

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Bev Livingston speaks with Maria Miller about Larry’s Law.  Maria is a CURE member St Louis, Missouri.  She has spent more than a decade seeking answers after her brother died in state prison and is now advocating for legislation that would create an independent oversight agency for the Missouri Department of Corrections. Two Missouri House bills, HB 2832 and HB 1616, and a companion bill in the Missouri Senate known as “Larry’s Law” would establish independent oversight of the Missouri Department of Corrections. The proposed independent agency would monitor prison conditions, track compliance, establish a reporting system to collect data, and issue annual reports about the department. The bills are currently in the House Corrections Committee, where there was a hearing in early 2026. The bills are supported by advocates for improved prison safety because they would establish a formal system to track data and issue annual reports regarding prison conditions. Maria Miller lost her brother, Larry, more than 12 years ago after he was stabbed in prison. Miller said her family received little information following his death and that the lack of transparency prompted her to advocate for systemic change. The Missouri Department of Corrections has not taken a formal position on the bill. In a statement, a department spokesperson said the agency already has oversight mechanisms in place. The Department of Corrections is one of Missouri’s largest, with a $935 million 2026 budget and more than 10,000 employees. Those mechanisms include an anonymous complaints hotline known as the CLEAR line, an internal investigations unit, an Office of Professional Standards, a grievance system for incarcerated residents, contract monitors for medical and mental health providers, a Constituent Services Office for families and a Sunshine Law unit for public records requests. The department also conducts autopsies for nearly all deaths in custody and provides weekly reporting of all deaths and causes of death. In the second part of our hour, Jaws of Justice will play another talk with Chris Gilyard, resident at the Missouri Crossroads Correctional facility. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

CINDY COHN TALKS ABOUT HER NEW BOOK ON INTERNET LAW: PRIVACY RIGHTS; GUNS TO GARDENS KANSAS CITY, A SAFE ANONYMOUS FIREARMS DISPOSAL EVENT

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke speaks with author Cindy Cohn about her new book, Privacy's Defender, My Thirty-Year Fight Against Digital Surveillance and her work as executive director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is the world’s biggest and oldest digital rights organization. https://www.eff.org/Privacys-Defender Cindy Cohn recounts the fight against sweeping government surveillance after 9/11, her reservations about internet regulations backfiring if placed in the wrong hands, and why the solution to these problems is a combination of comprehensive privacy law, revised business models of giant tech companies who make money off of user data, and more platform choices for individuals. Part memoir and part legal history for the general reader, the book is a compelling testament to just how hard-won the privacy rights we now enjoy as tech users are, and also how crucial these rights are in our efforts to combat authoritarianism, grow democracy, and strengthen other human rights. Cindy Cohn is an American civil liberties attorney specializing in Internet law. She has served as executive director for the Electronic Frontier Foundation since 2015.   In the second part of our hour, I will speak with the Rev. Phil Woodson, Pastor, Stilwell United Methodist Church, Stilwell, Kansas and Dianna Heffernon, church member and retired teacher. They will talk about the Saturday, May 2, 2026 event, Guns to Gardens Kansas City, from 1 – 3 PM at the Stilwell United Methodist Church, 19335 Metcalf Ave, Stilwell, KS 66085 This event welcomes everyone who wants an opportunity to dispose of unwanted firearms safely, responsibly, and anonymously. Grocery store gift cards will be offered in appreciation for safely disposing of firearms, while supplies last. https://www.gunstogardenskc.org/ On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

THE BURN LIST: THE CONSEQUENCES OF PRIORITIZING POWER OVER PEOPLE and THE MIDWEST INNOCENCE PROJECT (MIP) IS MARKING A SIGNIFICANT MILESTONE

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Host Terri Wilke will speak with Julie Cruse, a writer, advocate, and former academic working to expose and dismantle abuse in higher education. Cruse has become a leading voice for survivors navigating academic systems that too often protect institutions over people. She is the founder of AcademicAbuse.com, a survivor-led platform that documents abuse of power in universities and provides resources for both faculty and students navigating trauma and seeking justice. Cruse’s advocacy is grounded in the belief that academic abuse is a systemic problem tied to unchecked authority and weak enforcement of Title VII and Title IX protections. Through her work, she connects individual stories to broader labor and social justice issues, showing how abuse is allowed to persist inside institutions tasked with advancing the public good and teaching the next generation. Her book, The Burn List, A Memoir of Abuse from Home to Higher Education is based on the testimonies of survivors. It traces how academic exploitation unfolds over time and why existing reporting mechanisms so often fail.   Host Keith Brown El will speak with representatives of the Midwest Innocence Project including Executive Director Tahir Atwater, Board Member and former KC Chiefs and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Will Shields. The Midwest Innocence Project celebrates 25 years of freedom with a Faces of Innocence “Be the Light” Event on April 30th, 2026. The Midwest Innocence Project (MIP) is a not-for-profit dedicated to investigating, litigating, and exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals across five states. They are marking a significant milestone  and inviting the community to take part. On Thursday evening, April 30 (7-9 p.m.) MIP will host its Faces of Innocence: Be the Light event at the Midland Theatre, celebrating 25 years in the fight for freedom. With lives still waiting to be restored, this moment calls for action. Tickets and sponsorships are available now at themip.org under “Faces of Innocence 2026.” Faces of Innocence is MIP’s signature annual fundraiser—and this year’s event carries added urgency. The evening will spotlight the real impact of MIP’s work: bringing innocent people home, advancing ongoing cases, and accelerating efforts to free those still wrongfully convicted. Guests will engage with immersive experiences and interactive exhibits that bring these stories to life. A Golden Ticket Raffle offers the chance to win one of three dream vacation packages, while drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be served throughout the evening. Attendees will also hear a powerful musical performance by MIP client Faye Jacobs, who was released after 26 years of incarceration; MIP continues its efforts to have her conviction overturned. Adding to the evening’s significance, Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Kansas City Chiefs lineman Will Shields—a dedicated MIP Board Member—will host an exclusive Golden Hour Reception for sponsors. Held in the Midland’s Chandelier Bar, this intimate pre-event gathering offers a unique opportunity to connect directly with Shields and support a cause where time truly matters. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.   https://kkfi.org/listen/

JUSTICE-IMPACTED INDIVIDUALS CAN BE ASSETS TO THE COMMUNITY

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. On February 23, 2026, host Bev Livingston will speak with Latrell Stanton, a community organizer and strategist with over 12 years of experience in grassroots mobilization and policy advocacy in St. Louis. His work focuses on criminal justice reform, recorded expungement, juvenile justice and policy change. Latrell has been a key contributor in several statewide ballot initiatives, most recently the “Healthy Families” minimum wage initiative. He has served on task forces dedicated to inspecting carceral conditions and recommending policy changes to state and local officials. He has testified before the Missouri House and Senate on behalf of the Clean Slate Initiative. He is now serving as the Executive Director of EXPO StL. EXPO is an acronym for Ex-Incarcerated People Organizing.  EXPO is an organization composed of formerly incarcerated individuals devoted to prison reform, ending mass incarceration and the collateral consequences of being impacted by the system. EXPO StL is a chapter of EXPO Wisconsin which was formed in 2014 in Milwaukee. They have 3 official chapters and are in the process of adding more chapters throughout the country. Their goal is to humanize individuals currently and previously involved in the criminal justice system. EXPO believes everyone should be given a second opportunity to pursue a happy life and harmony within society. https://mcustlouis.org/expo/ On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

MESSAGE FROM A CORRECTIONAL FACILITY RESIDENT; HOST CRAIG LUBOW SPEAKS WITH ML SMITH, FOUNDER OF MISSOURI JUSTICE COALITION

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Jaws of Justice will broadcast another conversation from Chris Gilyard, a resident of Missouri Crossroads Correctional Facility, who will share his opinion about life, mistakes and corrections. Crossroads Correctional Center is located in Cameron, Missouri.  Chris reached out to Jaws of Justice.  He was interviewed using the telephone. In the second half of our hour, host Craig Lubow will speak with ML Smith, Founder of Missouri Justice Coalition. https://mojustice.org/ MoJustice is dedicated to serving as a unifying force across the state of Missouri, bringing together individuals impacted by the criminal punishment system. Their mission is to educate, empower, and unite community members, transforming them into a powerful advocacy base. Through collaborative efforts, MoJustice strives to drive meaningful reforms within the Missouri prison system, addressing the systemic injustices, inhumane conditions, and absence of accountability. They firmly believe that collective amplification and collective action are essential in building a statewide base of effective and sustained prison advocacy. MoJustice envisions a Missouri where the criminal punishment system is characterized by fairness, accountability, compassion, and rehabilitation. Their vision is a future where everyone, regardless of their background, is treated with dignity and humanity within the prison system. Through collective action, they foster a society where rehabilitation and restorative justice are at the forefront, ultimately creating a safer, more inclusive, and equitable Missouri for all its residents. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.

SURVIVING THE AGE OF ICE: IMMIGRATION 101

Thank you for the generous support we received during our recent pledge drive. It keeps us going. Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. Tune in to hear a recording from the August 19th Solidarity School of Resistance, Immigration 101 presented by Judy Ancel of The Cross Border Network for Justice and Solidarity Cross Border Network, Claire Murphy Shaw of The Asylum Clinic and Karla Juarez of Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR). The U.S. immigration system is complex and can be difficult to understand. Immigration in the United States is complex and ever-evolving. Explore layered topics like how and whether immigrants can become citizens and what individual protections look like under the law. The Cross Border Network for Justice and Solidarity is a grassroots organization based in Kansas City which recognizes the common interests of working people in the world and builds ties for common action among them. https://www.crossbordernetwork.org/ Luchando por los trabajadores entre fronteras! La Red Transfronteriza para la Justicia y la Solidaridad es una organización de base con sede en Kansas City, que reconoce los intereses comunes de los trabajadores en el mundo y construye vínculos de acción común entre ellos.   The Asylum Clinic promotes justice through the delivery of accessible legal services and support that empower underserved immigrants and refugees in The Heartland. https://www.asylumclinickc.org/ Advocates for Immigrant Rights and Reconciliation (AIRR) recognizes and is working tirelessly to keep families together and end the humanitarian crisis our immigrant community is facing on the belief that all people, no matter where they were born, deserve a chance at a safe and dignified life. AIRR is committed to empower and uplift the voices of the immigrant community and provide them with the tools they need to better protect themselves and their families. https://airrkc.org/ Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has recorded its deadliest year since the early 2000s as agency officials push to increase the number of people in its custody. At least 20 people have died in ICE custody so far this year. ICE is also holding nearly 60,000 people in immigration detention, the highest number in several years. Historians note that public opinion on accepting refugees and immigrants has not always been in line with the narrative of open arms. We find it difficult to live up to the promises made in those stories. Nevertheless, a story in which people are killed while in the care of the state points to a complete breakdown of the legal system. This reflects a real-world moral failure of the prison system, where authorities have a responsibility to protect those in their custody. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are. https://kkfi.org/listen/

    “LENS OF A LAWYER”

Jaws of Justice Radio investigates how we can achieve justice from a system of laws deeply rooted in economic, social and political inequality.  We want to dispel misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system. We hope you will listen. "Lens of a Lawyer" is a podcast series hosted by David Bell that examines the justice system through the human stories and real-world issues behind the law.  It features conversations with people who have experienced the legal system, activists, and legal professionals. It aims to reveal the complexities of the justice system and the human stories behind legal issues, focusing on empathy and insight. The podcast explores what the justice system says about society and how real-world issues play out beyond headlines. “Lens of a lawyer” can mean a perspective on life and law from a lawyer's viewpoint, which involves applying their analytical skills, understanding of legal principles, and ability to assess risks and benefits to analyze situations and advocate for clients. A lawyer's "lens" involves using strong analytical skills to break down complex information and identify key legal principles at play. This perspective involves evaluating situations to propose viable solutions, negotiate disputes, and help clients make informed decisions. Lawyers view cases through the lens of their client's best interests, advocating for specific legal interpretations and actions that are most favorable to them. A deep understanding of relevant laws and procedures, enables them to explain legal options, risks, and benefits to their clients. A lawyer's perspective is also grounded in integrity and a commitment to justice, ensuring their actions are both ethical and effective. We begin our broadcast of this series with the episode, Lens of a Lawyer - Erik Hulse - Zen and the Art of Keeping Your Cool. Erik Hulse’s journey is anything but ordinary.  He was once a troubled teen and gifted musician; he went on to serve as an undercover cop and eventually became a police captain. But it wasn’t until he discovered Buddhism and mindfulness that he found real peace and purpose. Now a teacher of both, Erik joins David to talk about how crime and legal struggles often stem from a loss of control, and how practices like meditation and self-reflection can help us reclaim it. On Jaws of Justice, we examine how to find justice in our society.  Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.   https://kkfi.org/listen/

ABOUT THIS SHOW

It is the intention of Jaws of Justice Radio to investigate how to achieve justice in America, this includes issues of economic injustice, political injustice and the criminal justice system. We want to put a human face on those caught in the grasp of injustice and those that are part of an unjust system. We strive to dispel the misconceptions created by the news and entertainment industry, politicians and our educational system.
