Turns out, pausing, breathing, and occasionally acting like humans instead of productivity robots might actually help. We dive into team culture and realize—surprise!—your vibe as a leader is contagious. If you’re running around stressed and skipping lunch, your team’s not exactly going to be sipping tea and setting boundaries. Jabina provided a special lens during this one-hour deeper dive - understanding the demands faced by lactation professionals in private practice and her expertise in the field of mental health. Combining these two gives vital insight into how lactation consultants can say yes to their needs so they can meet the needs of others.Jabina G. Coleman is a Licensed Social Worker and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. She received her bachelors of science for the Pennsylvania State University and her Masters in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania School of Social Policy and Practice. Jabina has dedicated over a decade to serving women, children, and families throughout the Philadelphia region. Jabina engages with communities through her work as the owner of Life House Lactation & Perinatal Services, LLC, where she provides lactation consultation services and reproductive psychotherapy with a focus on perinatal mental health. She also serves as the co-founder and president of Perinatal Mental Health Alliance for People of Color, unifying professionals of color to support communities’ perinatal mental health needs.Additionally, Jabina is the co-founder of Breastfeeding Awareness & Empowerment (BAE), a grassroots organization created in response to the public outcry surrounding adverse perinatal health outcomes for U.S. black families. Jabina is a dynamic, national speaker spearheading the call to action: Everyone wants to hold the baby, who will hold the mother? Her professional experiences in hospital social work, community organizing and engagement, and private-practice has drawn many to her for mentorship and leadership. Jabina uses her personal and professional experiences to inspire, and promote emotional wellness and balance among her peers.Jabina’s work has been published in the Clinical Lactation Journal. She is a published author for Breastfeeding and Human Lactation 6th edition and has been featured in multiple media outlets including the Huffington Post, Philadelphia Inquirer, WHYY and KYW. Jabina has been honored as a recipient of the United States Breastfeeding Committee Cultural Changemaker Award and was a commencement speaker for the 2011 graduating class at her alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania. In this episode, we dive headfirst into the emotional topic that is client communication, especially the kind that happens when everyone’s stressed, sleep-deprived, and possibly holding a crying baby (or crying themselves). As a lactation consultant, it turns out, your mood matters. Shocking, right? If you're under-caffeinated, over-caffeinated, or just generally cranky, your ability to be empathetic can fly right out the window. Good communication means actually listening (and not just waiting for your turn to talk), choosing our words carefully, and never, ever being the reason a client walks away more stressed than when they showed up.The goal? Set realistic expectations, offer encouragement, and stop ourselves from promising the moon just to avoid awkward silence." You have to put as much energy into training your communication skills as you are learning all the physiological reasons people have low milk supply. People don’t know what they don’t know about breastfeeding. As a lactation consultant, you have the unique opportunity to educate families, other healthcare providers, and members of your community about the different feeding methods. By increasing awareness and understanding for breastfeeding, chestfeeding, formula feeding, and supplementation, you are making your job easier down the road when people feel more comfortable coming to you for help when they feel they need it.“You’re building a community that values infant feeding and values continuing education about lactation…creating a connection that is fulfilling for everyone.”In this episode, we will cover:IBCLCs are the gold standard for lactation care because of the high expectations and great responsibilities that they have to their clients and communities, and part of this is being competent in educating.You may find it helpful to offer classes such as Basics, Getting Started, Returning to Work, Starting Solids and Weaning, or other focused classes to the families in your community.In online and in-person community groups, it is best to just stick to announcing your classes and not get sucked into responding to clinical questions or engaging in advocacy inside someone’s personal thread about their own experienceA great way to educate healthcare providers is to create informational resources that they can review and hand out to relevant patients.Look into creating continuing education opportunities locally and at conferences to meet healthcare providers (and medical students) where they are.Consider reaching out to local schools and groups to see if you could share with students about lactation consulting as a profession since many of them have never heard of it but might consider following that path in the future.The more we talk about breastfeeding in the community, the more comfortable people will be breastfeeding and talking about breastfeeding, and the positive impacts on the community of a more healthy breastfeeding culture are too great to be measured.This episode is sponsored by IntakeQ.
