If I Could Add a Chapter to My Book On Brand, This Is What It Would Be

What if you don't need a rebrand at all? What if you need a co-brand? Personal story time… A few weeks ago, I shared that I was launching The Daily Salad — Today’s News, Chopped and Seasoned with Bite. It’s a longer-form extension of what I’ve been doing on Instagram, now building out on YouTube. The focus is the U.S.–Israel relationship, the rise of antisemitism, global threats, civic integrity, and political accountability, with the occasional crouton of trending pop culture. It’s not a recap of everything happening in the world. It’s a curated reality check on the headlines I choose to highlight because I actually have something to say about them. I connect hidden dots, surface context others ignore, and break down the narrative with a dose of clarity, satire, and bite. I don’t "both sides" the issue just to get to the point. In other words, a sharp pivot from the career most of you know me for. For over 25 years, I built credibility in fashion PR, marketing, social media, career advice, and personal branding. I pioneered DKNY PR GIRL, one of the first examples of a social media personality. I wrote two books. I’ve spent decades helping others define and own their brand. So when I decided to lean fully into news commentary and analysis, I immediately thought: Do I need to rebrand? Since October 7, my LinkedIn felt like one world. My Instagram activism and news felt like another. Two identities. Two lanes. Don’t mix them. When I announced The Daily Salad here, it felt like planting a flag. Like I was finally saying out loud: this is where my passion and purpose are right now. But here’s what I realized, and it’s the chapter I would add to On Brand: Rebranding would mean stripping away everything I’ve built. Walking away from decades of credibility to become “someone new.” That didn’t feel right. Because when I really looked at it, what do I actually do? I engineer narratives. I understand optics. I analyze positioning. I connect dots that others overlook. In PR, we used to joke that we were the smoke and mirrors department. We knew how stories were shaped. How context was framed. How timing altered perception. Today, when I analyze the news, I’m using the exact same skill set. Different subject matter. Same muscle. After a career spent shaping narratives, I’ve realized the most important skill in today’s world isn't just consuming the news; it’s seeing through it. I do this through the lens of a proud Jewish voice committed to American values. In On Brand, I talk about the Venn diagram exercise. One circle is who you’ve been. The other is who you’re becoming. The magic lives in the overlap. When I did that exercise for myself, I saw it clearly. The through line is narrative engineering. Not fashion. Not news. Narrative. So if you’re feeling split between two professional identities, or building something new while protecting what you’ve already built, pause before you torch your brand. Maybe you don’t need a rebrand. Maybe you need a co-brand. You don’t have to abandon credibility to evolve. You can build on it. I hope you'll explore my new show. I’m here to start the conversation, not finish it. You don't have to agree with every one of my takes, but we definitely need to be talking more. I hope to see you in the comments.

Toxic Nonchalance: When Relaxed Leadership Causes Team Stress

In this episode, I’m talking about something I’ve seen again and again in leadership: Toxic Nonchalance. It's when a manager appears calm, easygoing, and “empowering,” but their lack of direction and decisiveness quietly drives everyone crazy. They think they’re creating space. What they’re really creating is stress. I break down how this leadership trap shows up — from unclear expectations and delayed decisions to endless “You decide” moments that leave teams spinning. Drawing on insights from Forbes and Harvard Business Review, I’ll unpack why leaders fall into this pattern, what it signals to employees, and how to shift from passive to purposeful. You’ll learn: Why indecisive leadership damages trust and engagement How “relaxed” leaders accidentally create anxiety and burnout The difference between empowerment and abandonment How to balance calm with clarity My self-diagnosis checklist to see if you’re slipping into toxic nonchalance yourself If you’ve ever worried that being too chill might come across as careless, this episode will help you find that sweet spot between calm and confident leadership. Because being easygoing isn’t the goal. Being clear is.

Effortless Influence: How Jane Birkin Rewrote the Rules of Reinvention with Marisa Meltzer

In this episode of Leave Your Mark, I sit down again with New York Times bestselling author Marisa Meltzer to talk about her new book, IT GIRL — the first comprehensive biography of Jane Birkin, actress, singer, and legendary style icon. Jane Birkin was synonymous with chic. Her effortless style and artistic legacy have been immortalized through her music and film career. And of course, she was the inspiration behind one of the world’s most coveted bags, the Hermès Birkin. But who was the real woman behind the it girl? Marisa sheds new light on Birkin’s enigmatic life and explores her profound influence on generations in a rigorously reported biography unlike any other. It Girl paints a vivid portrait of Birkin’s life — from her early years in 1960s London to her rise as a beloved celebrity in France — revealing her creative drive, personal challenges, and the delicate balance between her public persona and private self. Together, we talk about how Birkin redefined femininity, inspired an entire cultural aesthetic, and carved out a creative identity that was far more than a muse. Far from being just the woman behind the bag, Jane Birkin was a woman ahead of her time — and It Girl finally gives her the recognition she deserves.

Using Jimmy Kimmel’s recent headlines as a case study, Peter explains how morals clauses work in talent agreements, what rights companies have to suspend or fire employees over remarks, and why business risk often drives decisions more than legal standards. Public Apologies, Private Agendas, and the War on Truth with Aliza Licht and Co-host Samantha Ettus

In this episode of Leave Your Mark, my dear friend and special co-host Samantha Ettus joins me to unpack what happens when people and institutions get their apologies disastrously wrong. From a Vice President at Penguin Random House reposting a vile mockery of an innocent Jewish woman’s murder, to the New York Times publishing a dangerously misleading story about starvation in Gaza, we explore how these failures not only erode public trust but also fuel antisemitism. This episode goes beyond PR missteps to unpack the moral and societal cost of bad apologies, and the silence that often follows them. With candor, urgency, and clarity, we break down: - Why the “I didn’t read it” excuse doesn’t fly when you’re an editor - The anatomy of a real apology and the red flags that scream deflection - What the New York Times gets consistently wrong about Israel and the Jewish people - How modern journalism is failing at its duty and what that means for public safety - Why brands and institutions must speak out and what silence really signals This is more than a conversation about saying sorry. It’s about who gets protected, who gets harmed, and what real accountability looks like in a world where perception is power. The Strategic Missteps of Jaguar's Rebrand: A Fashion Marketer's Analysis

In this episode of Leave Your Mark, I analyze Jaguar's recent controversial rebranding campaign, 'Copy Nothing.' As someone deeply embedded in luxury marketing, watching Jaguar's recent "Copy Nothing" rebrand was akin to witnessing a heritage fashion house abandon its signature codes. The automotive equivalent of Saint Laurent dropping Yves is a move that requires precision, strategy, and, above all, deep market understanding. Jaguar's pivot from its storied British luxury codes to stark minimalism, no doubt visually inspired by the beauty and fashion worlds, reflects a fundamental misread of the luxury market, their customer, and the climate today. Brands must evolve, but Jaguar's approach stripped away the DNA that positioned them in the luxury automotive sector in the first place. Drawing parallels to successful luxury fashion rebrands – consider Gucci under Michele or Celine under Slimane – even radical departures maintained a dialogue with house codes. The most successful brand evolutions in the luxury sector don't erase heritage; they recontextualize it. Jaguar's break with their visual legacy demonstrates a disconnect with contemporary luxury marketing principles. Join me for a marketing-focused episode where I discuss Jaguar's drastic changes to their logo and brand identity and the significant backlash the campaign received. I explain the importance of not abandoning brand heritage and engaging cross-functional teams in rebranding. Drawing on my experiences with major rebrands, I offer crucial lessons for marketers on navigating brand evolution without alienating existing customers. In luxury markets, whether automotive or fashion, brand equity is built over decades but can be compromised in a single season. The key lies in evolution that honors legacy while embracing the future – a lesson Jaguar's rebrand makes painfully clear. 00:00 Introduction to Leave Your Mark 00:26 Jaguar's Controversial Rebrand 01:12 Analyzing the Campaign's Flaws 02:42 Lessons for Marketers 05:52 Comparing with Successful Campaigns 10:16 The Fallout and Future Steps 12:55 Conclusion and Final Thoughts Use my link https://porkbun.com/LeaveYourMark24 to get a .bio domain for less than $2 now at Porkbun!
