HUMANS
Hello everyone. I hope you are doing well. Today, the topic of our episode will be Humans.Let’s start with a masterpiece, The Great Dictator by Charlie Chaplin. Unfortunately, I did not have the chance to watch it, but I still managed to read its plot and watch the final speech given by Hynkel, in reality, the barber, which I can only define as absolute cinema. I am usually a laid-back person, but Chaplin’ s words gave me literal goosebumps. The motivation it gave me is unparalleled by any political speech I could ever hear. I sadly cannot say the same about Paolo Nutini’ s song. I have tried listening to it multiple times, even reading the lyrics, but I could not understand any of the words. I can sense that it has a deeper meaning, but I couldn't grasp it, perhaps it was because the images were so detached from each other, confusing me even more than I already was. Turning back to the main question, “What does it mean to be HUMAN?”, let's begin with the broad concept of humanity. What is humanity? Humanity is an animal species, specifically bipedal mammals, but what separates us from the other families with these same traits? Conscientiousness. We evolved in a certain way that no other living being could. Thousands of millennia ago, we were just apes, but we began to become smarter and more aware of life as more than just survival. We did not just adapt to the environment as others do, we changed our surroundings to our own pleasure. A Human is a single individual who, like the rest of humanity, has developed self-awareness. Once we have defined humanity as a broader concept, we can go deeper. Now, all my arguments toward us, humans, are negative ones, I do not believe that humanity has ever made any good from the dawn of its existence. According to Science Focus, animals do not kill each other for no purpose whatsoever. They usually kill other species for territorial dominance or mating, which we also do. Humans kill each other for money, drugs, land, pride, sexism, racism, and homophobia, all frivolous aspects that other species do not care about. Wars for oil, not a basic material like food or water, have been going on for nearly a century on this planet. Oil that we extract from the earth itself just to pollute it, damaging the environment (as I said, we change the environment for our own ego). We have serial killers, who kill people for pleasure, PLEASURE, yes, some animals behave similarly, but have you ever seen a tiger pay to go shoot children during a city siege in Bosnia? We have hate-crime deaths, killing other humans only for a different skin colour, for instance, slavery is not practised by any living creature in the whole universe but us. Lastly, we have men killing women for politely refusing their advances, a trend that has been going on for a while in Brazil, some male birds kill other males to gain a chance to reproduce with a female. We have the opposite, so-called males advising others to kill women for saying no. Furthermore, I will not consider genocides because it would just humiliate all of us.Having said all of this, I can affirm that we have one positive thing: democracy. Social animals usually have a leader who decides over the group; we have democracy, where we can all choose what we want to have or be. Democracy is not granted, as I am speaking, nearly 75%, three-quarters, of the world population lives in an authoritarian regime, with some having zero freedom or human rights. For this reason, I am sure of one thing: I will fight for democracy! I don’t know who you are, I am not interested, I just know that we all share the gift of life, way too precious to waste it being trapped or subjugated, to live freely, and for this reason, I will fight for your freedom. If you are hearing this, every time you lose hope in humanity by reading the newspaper, try to think about how to at least do something to make the world a better place, to fight for the liberty that others do not have. Thank you for listening. That's all for today. See you in the next episode!
