The Historical Jesus Audiobook by The Great Courses, Bart D. Ehrman

https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/73/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The Historical Jesus Author: The Great Courses, Bart D. Ehrman Narrator: Professor Bart D. Ehrman Format: Original Recording Length: 12 hrs and 21 mins Language: English Release date: 07-08-13 Publisher: The Great Courses Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 285 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: From the late Roman Empire all the way to our own time, no continuously existing institution or belief system has wielded as much influence as Christianity, no figure as much as Jesus. Worshipped around the globe by more than a billion people, he is undoubtedly the single most important figure in the story of Western civilization and one of the most significant in world history altogether. Yet who was Jesus of Nazareth? What was he like? It's a question that's been pondered by people and groups of varying convictions for more than 2,000 years. And everyone with even the faintest knowledge, says Professor Ehrman, has an opinion - with those opinions differing not only among laypeople but even among professional scholars who have devoted their lives to the task of reconstructing what the historical Jesus was probably like and what he most likely said and did. This series of 24 lectures from an award-winning teacher and scholar approaches the subject from a purely historical perspective, with no intention of affirming or denying any particular theological beliefs. He explains why it has proven so difficult to know about the "Jesus of history" and reveals the kinds of conclusions modern scholars have drawn about him. He begins with a discussion of the four New Testament Gospels - our principle source of knowledge about Jesus - and other sources, explaining what they are, how they came to be written, and how biblical scholars plumb them for historical understanding, before integrating them into the historical context of Jesus' life and a scholarly reconstruction of Jesus' words and deeds in light of the best available historical methods and evidence. The War Scroll: The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness Audiobook

https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/73/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: The War Scroll: The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness Subtitle: History, Symbols, Texts, and Commentary Author: Joseph Lumpkin Narrator: Dennis Logan Format: Unabridged Length: 5 hrs and 4 mins Language: English Release date: 01-19-18 Publisher: Fifth Estate Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: Following in the apocalyptic visions of Daniel, Ezekiel, and Revelation, The War Scroll reveals the conflict between good and evil in the final days of mankind. Popularly known as "The War of the Sons of Light Against the Sons of Darkness", The War Scroll is one of the seven original Dead Sea Scrolls discovered in Qumran in 1947 and holds the Qumran library designator of "1QM", meaning it was produced from the dig of cave one. The War Scroll is a very important piece of literature in our understanding of the concepts of divine justice and retribution held by the Jewish community of the Essenes and the Qumran Community in the time of Jewish persecution by Rome. The scroll reflects a belief that in the end times, evil would be eradicated by the Power of God and his Sons of Light. The Qumran community saw itself as a righteous light in the world, solidly on the side of good. As Gods army, they would fight evil in the world, and with God's help, through his agent, Michael the Archangel, they would win the battle against the Sons of Darkness and bring back righteousness and peace. The text is replete with parallel biblical and apocryphal verses, commentary, and references to numerical symbolism, all intended to lead the listener into an appreciation and understanding of the text.

Aldrete PhD Format: Original Recording Length: 12 hrs and 15 mins Language: English Release date: 01-05-18 Publisher: The Great Courses Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 8 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: The Roman Republic is one of the most breathtaking civilizations in world history. Between roughly 500 BCE to the turn of the millennium, a modest city-state developed an innovative system of government and expanded into far-flung territories across Europe, Northern Africa, and the Middle East. This powerful civilization inspired America's founding fathers, gifted us a blueprint for amazing engineering innovations, left a vital trove of myths, and has inspired the human imagination for 2,000 years. How did Rome become so powerful? This mystery has vexed historians from the ancient Greek writer Polybius to 21st century scholars. Today, removed as we are from the Roman Republic, historians also wonder what it was like to be a Roman citizen in that amazing era. Beyond the familiar names of Romulus, Caesar, Octavian, Brutus, and Mark Antony, what was life like for the ordinary people? And what did the conquered peoples think of this world power? The Great Philosophers Audiobook by James Garvey, Jeremy Stangroom

Title: The Great Philosophers Subtitle: From Socrates to Foucault Author: James Garvey, Jeremy Stangroom Narrator: Stephen Crossley Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 3 mins Language: English Release date: 12-05-17 Publisher: Arcturus Digital Limited Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: Philosophy has been underway for more than 2,000 years. The Great Philosophers traces the biggest and most influential thoughts in philosophys long stride through history, beginning with the ancient Greeks and early Romans, the first philosophical thinkers in the West, to whom much is owed. How their concerns became the concerns of those who followed is clearly laid out, as is the way their answers shaped what we now recognize as philosophy. The medieval philosophers are also represented, combining their religious concerns with ancient thought and carrying it into the Renaissance. The modern era, the explosion of philosophy sparked by Descartes, is well represented here too. Founders and representatives of both rationalist and empiricist schools make an appearance, as do philosophys skeptics with their often-darker conclusions. Philosophys long walk continues, and you will find here the thoughts which make its contemporary form what it is, and perhaps what it is on the way to becoming. Philosophy is very much still underway, and The Great Philosophers pays regard to both the discipline as it is practiced now and to the history which made contemporary philosophy possible.

The Fate of Rome Audiobook by Kyle Harper

Title: The Fate of Rome Subtitle: Climate, Disease, and the End of an Empire Author: Kyle Harper Narrator: Andrew Garman Format: Unabridged Length: 15 hrs and 20 mins Language: English Release date: 10-27-17 Publisher: Recorded Books Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 23 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: A sweeping new history of how climate change and disease helped bring down the Roman Empire Here is the monumental retelling of one of the most consequential chapters of human history: the fall of the Roman Empire. The Fate of Rome is the first book to examine the catastrophic role that climate change and infectious diseases played in the collapse of Rome's power - a story of nature's triumph over human ambition. Interweaving a grand historical narrative with cutting-edge climate science and genetic discoveries, Kyle Harper traces how the fate of Rome was decided not just by emperors, soldiers, and barbarians but also by volcanic eruptions, solar cycles, climate instability, and devastating viruses and bacteria. He takes listeners from Rome's pinnacle in the second century, when the empire seemed an invincible superpower, to its unraveling by the seventh century, when Rome was politically fragmented and materially depleted. Harper describes how the Romans were resilient in the face of enormous environmental stress, until the besieged empire could no longer withstand the combined challenges of a "little ice age" and recurrent outbreaks of bubonic plague. A poignant reflection on humanity's intimate relationship with the environment, The Fate of Rome provides a sweeping account of how one of history's greatest civilizations encountered, endured, yet ultimately succumbed to the cumulative burden of nature's violence. The example of Rome is a timely reminder that climate change and germ evolution have shaped the world we inhabit - in ways that are surprising and profound. Author bio: Kyle Harper is professor of classics and letters and senior vice president and provost at the University of Oklahoma. He is the author of Slavery in the Late Roman World, AD 275-425 and From Shame to Sin: The Christian Transformation of Sexual Morality in Late Antiquity. He lives in Norman, Oklahoma.

Title: The Storm Before the Storm Subtitle: The Beginning of the End of the Roman Republic Author: Mike Duncan Narrator: Mike Duncan Format: Unabridged Length: 10 hrs and 13 mins Language: English Release date: 10-24-17 Publisher: Hachette Audio Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1134 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: The creator of the massively popular, award-winning podcast series The History of Rome brings to life the story of the tumultuous years that set the stage for the fall of the Roman Republic. The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled. Almost as soon as they had conquered the Mediterranean, Rome became engulfed in violent political conflicts and civil wars that would destroy the Republic less than a century later. Chronicling the years 133-80 BCE, The Storm Before the Storm is a rollicking deep dive into the bloody battles, political machinations, and human drama that defined a dangerous new political environment - a stark warning for modern listeners about what happens to a civilization driven by increasing economic inequality, political polarization, and ruthless ambition. One ancient solstice custom is mummering. In North America today, it is a popular part of Christmas now only in Newfoundland and Pennsylvania. Title: Jerusalem and Islam Subtitle: The History and Legacy of the Holy City's Importance to Muslims Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Scott Clem Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 31 mins Language: English Release date: 03-31-17 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: "The most holy spot [al-quds] on earth is Syria; the most holy spot in Syria is Palestine; the most holy spot in Palestine is Jerusalem [Bayt al-maqdis]; the most holy spot in Jerusalem is the Mountain; the most holy spot in Jerusalem is the place of worship [al-masjid], and the most holy spot in the place of worship is the Dome" - Thawr ibn Yazid, circa 770 In the campaign leading up to the election of Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate frequently discussed the importance of moving the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. For many conservative Christian Americans and Israelis, this was tantamount to the United States agreeing to Jewish control over Jerusalem. As it stands now, the US has a consulate in Jerusalem, yet no country houses their embassy in Jerusalem due to the conflicting claims of the Israelis and Palestinians. The political issue is just one more reminder of how important Jerusalem is as both a secular and religious flashpoint. One of the oldest cities in the world, Jerusalem is a holy and special city to the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Throughout its more than 6,000 year history, Jerusalem has been a center of contention, from conflicting clans to warring states. In addition to its religious significance, Jerusalem's strategic location has also made the city desirable throughout history.

Title: Scriptural Translation of Egyptian Hieroglyphic Vignettes, Volume 1 Subtitle: The Book of Abraham Author: Abraham Narrator: Trevor Clinger Format: Unabridged Length: 15 mins Language: English Release date: 12-26-16 Publisher: Travis Wayne Goodsell Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: From my books from the Translating the Hieroglyphic Vignettes series, I demonstrate how to translate the Egyptian illustrations containing deities. I pointed out that this was how Joseph Smith translated his Book of Abraham text. And I pointed out that Joseph Smith's translation was not complete. I therefore make a more complete textual translation of the facsimiles and other vignettes from the Book of Breathings and maybe even the Book of the Dead papyri. I will not at this time make a translation of the papyri texts, just the hieroglyphic vignettes. I do not follow Joseph Smith's manner of translation, nor do I follow the pattern of the King James version. The translation is after my manner of speech. And at this time I will not separate the text into chapters and verses, nor provide a footnoting system with my reference guide to the scriptures and my doctrinal guide to the scriptures. This will all be done at a later time.

Fahy, James S. Valliant Narrator: Chris MacDonnell Format: Unabridged Length: 11 hrs and 34 mins Language: English Release date: 11-14-16 Publisher: Crossroad Press Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 36 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: This explosive work of history unearths clues that finally demonstrate the truth about one of the world's great religions: that it was born out of the conflict between the Romans and messianic Jews who fought a bitter war with each other during the first century. The Romans employed a tactic they routinely used to conquer and absorb other nations: they grafted their imperial rule onto the religion of the conquered. After 30 years of research, authors James S. Valliant and C.W. Fahy present irrefutable archaeological and textual evidence that proves Christianity was created by Roman Caesars in this book that breaks new ground in Christian scholarship and is destined to change the way the world looks at ancient religions forever. Inherited from a long-past era of tyranny, war and deliberate religious fraud, could Christianity have been created for an entirely different purpose than we have been lead to believe? Praised by scholars like Dead Sea Scrolls translator Robert Eisenman (James the Brother of Jesus), this exhaustive synthesis of historical detective work integrates all of the ancient sources about the earliest Christians and reveals new archaeological evidence for the first time. And, despite the fable presented in current best sellers like Bill O'Reilly's Killing Jesus, the evidence presented in Creating Christ is irrefutable: Christianity was invented by Roman Emperors. Today, most people know about the relationship between the ancient Israelites and the Egyptians from the Old Testament book of Exodus, and the numerous feature films that often depict the dealings between the two peoples in contentious ways. The deadly plagues, the crossing of the Red Sea, the arduous 40 years the Israelites spent in the desert, and the Ten Commandments all make the Exodus unforgettable, but they've also left generations of scholars wondering just how accurate the scripture is, with some seeking to prove the historicity of the account and others trying to tie it to the Babylonian exile of the Israelites in the 7th century BCE.

Different types of Homo evolved depending on the area that they lived in. Neanderthals developed in the hotter climates of earth and are adapted best for this climate, and other Homos are best suited for the places they are found the most. After millions of years, Homo sapiens started to expand over the globe, mating and killing the local Homo species until it was Homo sapiens that dominated the earth. This can be seen in those native to different areas of the earth now, who possess around 1-5% of the genes of those Homos from that area. Once Homo sapiens were spread around the earth, a variety of changes happened over many thousands of years so they became adapted to finding food and functioning as a society. Homo sapiens moved from the middle of the food chain to the top as they possess a skill no other animal does, the ability to imagine concepts and scenarios. This means that humans can have a common bond with any other person without having met them before just because they believe in the same God or the strength of the tribe. Title: Jungle of Stone Subtitle: The True Story of Two Men, Their Extraordinary Journey, and the Discovery of the Lost Civilization of the Maya Author: William Carlsen Narrator: Paul Michael Garcia Format: Unabridged Length: 16 hrs and 35 mins Language: English Release date: 04-26-16 Publisher: HarperAudio Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 199 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: "Thrilling.... A captivating history of two men who dramatically changed their contemporaries' view of the past." (Kirkus) In 1839 rumors of extraordinary yet baffling stone ruins buried within the unmapped jungles of Central America reached two of the world's most intrepid travelers. Seized by the reports, American diplomat John Lloyd Stephens and British artist Frederick Catherwood - each already celebrated for their adventures in Egypt, the Holy Land, Greece, and Rome - sailed together out of New York Harbor on an expedition into the forbidding rainforests of present-day Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico. What they found would rewrite the West's understanding of human history. In the tradition of The Lost City of Z and In the Kingdom of Ice, former San Francisco Chronicle journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist William Carlsen reveals the unforgettable true story of the discovery of the ancient Maya. Enduring disease, war, and the torments of nature and terrain, Stephens and Catherwood uncovered and documented the remains of an astonishing civilization that had flourished in the Americas at the same time as classic Greece and Rome. Their remarkable book about the experience became a sensation and is recognized today as the birth of American archeology. Most importantly, Stephens and Catherwood were the first to grasp the significance of the Maya remains, recognizing that their antiquity and sophistication overturned the West's assumptions about the development of civilization. By the time of the flowering of classical Greece (400 BC), the Maya were already constructing pyramids and temples around central plazas. Within a few hundred years, the structures took on a monumental scale. Over the next millennium dozens of city-states evolved, each governed by powerful lords, some with populations larger than any city in Europe at the time. The Maya developed a unified cosmology, an array of common gods, a creation story, and a shared artistic and architectural vision. They created dazzling stucco and stone monuments and bas reliefs, sculpting figures and hieroglyphs with refined artistic skill. At their peak an estimated 10 million people occupied the Maya's heartland on the Yucatan Peninsula. And yet, by the time the Spanish reached the "New World", the classic-era Maya had all but disappeared; they would remain a mystery for the next 300 years. Today the tables are turned: The Maya are justly famous, if sometimes misunderstood, while Stephens and Catherwood have been all but forgotten. Based on Carlsen's rigorous research and his own 2,500-mile journey throughout the Yucatan and Central America, Jungle of Stone is equally a thrilling adventure narrative and a revelatory work of history that corrects our understanding of the Maya and the two remarkable men who set out in 1839 to find them.

Jones explains how, centuries earlier, Egyptian priest Manetho and Greek mystic Timotheus created the cult of Sarapis at the behest of Pharaoh Ptolemy Soter. Hypatia's identification with this religion got her killed and her works suppressed, but the philosophy today's scholars call Hellenic Neoplatonism was rediscovered in the Renaissance and then again in the New Age.

Title: Ancient Alien Origins Author: OH Krill Narrator: Philip Gardiner Format: Original Recording Length: 1 hr Language: English Release date: 12-17-15 Publisher: Sector 5 Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: Hidden from us by misunderstanding and mistranslation and clouded in mythology, the birth of religion on this planet was no mere accident. It was the result of a vast alien invasion that sparked the worship of the original ancient gods. Those gods are the oldest recorded figures of worship in any world history and extend much further back in antiquity. They are the root of all the major world religions. They gave rise to the great powers of Egypt, Mesopotamia, and more. They spread outward around the world and were the genesis of a very real holy bloodline that remains with us today. They were also known as "the watchers" - those who came to Earth as beings of light to teach and guide mankind. The aliens left Earth millennia ago, but the signs are growing daily that the prophecy of their return is imminent. "Startling insight into our forbidden past." (OH Krill) "We're talking about a complete re-write on accepted history." (United Media Network) "History is a set of lies agreed upon." (Napoléon Bonaparte) "The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history." (George Orwell)

In telling this story, I am not interested in taking any side. I just want to tell the story of how one small nation and a small group of people have had the tenacity and courage to defy the odds and preserve an ancient culture that has become the epicenter of not just conflict but religion, philosophy and human society as a whole. Because Israel has contributed so much to all of us, what was once just an Israelite culture has grown to become what is by and large an inherited world culture. As the scriptures promised to Abraham, "I will make your descendants countless as the dust of the earth; if anyone could count the dust upon the ground, then he could count your descendants." I believe that this scripture does hold true. Because the whole earth has indeed benefited and been greatly influenced from the powerful traditions and thought that have reverberated from Israel throughout history. Since the days of the Covenant that was made with Abraham in the desert, we have all become great inheritors of this tradition. With an inheritance that is as countless as the dust of the earth. Many great and wonderful things have come out of Israel and its people and the world would just not be the same without it.

Title: Civilizations of Africa: The History and Culture of the Mbuti (Pygmy) Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Gary D. MacFadden Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 29 mins Language: English Release date: 07-02-15 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: "[T]heir eyes had an untameable wildness about them that struck me as very remarkable." (French-American explorer Paul du Chaillu, 1867) The indigenous Africans known as pygmies have interested outsiders for thousands of years. In the 2200s BC, the Egyptian pharaoh Pepi II referred to one as a "dancing dwarf of the god from the land of spirits", and the Ancient Greeks were also familiar with them. Homer makes mention of pygmies in The Iliad, and Herodotus recounted the experiences of a Persian explorer who encountered "dwarfish people, who used clothing made from the palm tree", on the western coast of Africa. In fact the term pygmy comes from the Greek word for "dwarfish". Not surprisingly, foreigners' interest in pygmies has never waned. When medieval Europeans first traveled to Africa and parts of Asia, many of them were stunned when they encountered people who were considerably smaller than the average height. Perhaps the most famous account comes from the legendary Marco Polo, who was so confused about the people known as pygmies that he refused to believe they were actually human. In his famous account, Marco Polo wrote about seeing some of them in Indonesia, "I may tell you moreover that when people bring home pygmies which they allege to come from India, 'tis all a lie and a cheat...for nowhere in India nor anywhere else in the world were there ever men seen so small as these pretended pygmies." Marco Polo believed that the pygmies were actually monkeys that people manipulated and shaved to resemble smaller people. Today, of course, anthropologists know a lot more about the pygmies, a collective of indigenous groups in Africa who are still defined by the fact that they have an average height of less than five feet tall.

Black Civilizations of Southeast Asia Audiobook by Ra Hen-Nefer Amun

https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/73/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Black Civilizations of Southeast Asia Subtitle: Austro-Asiatic, Book 1 Author: Ra Hen-Nefer Amun Narrator: Tim Harwood Format: Unabridged Length: 2 hrs and 40 mins Language: English Release date: 07-01-15 Publisher: Black Publishing Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: This book demonstrates that the builders of Southeast Asia's first civilizations were black people of Australo-Melanesian and Negrito type. This book does for Southeast Asian civilization what Professor Cheikh Anta Diop did for Egyptian civilization: it demonstrates it was been built by black people. The genius of Diop's demonstration is that he quoted the leading experts of the field to clearly make his case, even though the experts in question would have opposed his black origins position. The author of this book manages the same by quoting the leading experts of Southeast Asian archaeology in books and peer reviewed articles to clearly make his case. Most Internet articles that are quoted are from university and museum websites and sourced from the top professors and PhDs in the field of Southeast Asian archaeology. In chapter six, the author also explores the subject of the origins of the Austro-Asiatic languages by referencing genetics, archaeology, and linguistics by citing Encyclopedia Britannica, the journal Evolutionary Biology, and the work of Dr. Roger Blench. This is a very sensitive subject and it would be naive to think that there will not be some nasty responses to this scholarly work. Whenever a book is written about the black origins of a civilization, some people will react as if the book is advocating for the inferiority of other races. The standard of such critique can be gauged from the complaint that the book highlights where civilization-builders are called "black and curly haired" but does not highlight the word "ugly". This is because the point of the book is to show the people were black and not show that someone thought they were ugly. Worse still, the same distorter claims "Throughout [the book] expect scholarship is ignored". This statement, from the person from the so-called Association for the History of Language, is a lie because the leading experts in the field are cited.

The Temple of Solomon: The History of Jerusalem's First Jewish Temple Audiobook

Title: The Temple of Solomon: The History of Jerusalem's First Jewish Temple Author: Charles River Editors Narrator: Winston Strobridge Format: Unabridged Length: 1 hr and 26 mins Language: English Release date: 06-22-15 Publisher: Charles River Editors Ratings: 3 of 5 out of 9 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: "In the 480th year after the Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord." (1 Kings 6:1) "In the year that king Uzziah died. I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and lifted up, and his train filled the hekhal (sanctuary)." (Isaiah 6:1) There was not any one entity more central to the Yahwistic Judean religion during the monarchy than the temple of Solomon. It symbolized the presence of YHWH in the nation, as well as his enduring protection of the nation and the Davidic royal throne. Judean worshippers directed their prayers toward the Solomonic temple, and eventually, the Judean prophets and theologians declared that this was the only legitimate location where priests could perform sacrifices and other religious rites for YHWH. Its significance can be seen most clearly in the dramatic cognitive dissonance experienced by the Judeans in Babylonian captivity after the destruction of the temple, which had been so central to their religious conception that they had great difficulty reconciling its destruction with their continued belief in YHWH. The Temple and the Biblical descriptions of it have fascinated people for centuries and led to all kinds of conjecture and imagination. In addition to countless works of art, Isaac Newton tried to make a model of it in his writings, and he wrote about the temple extensively. Even Freemasons give a nod to Solomon's Temple by calling their meeting places temples as well. That said, the Temple remains an enduring mystery due to conflicting accounts and descriptions of it in the Bible, and some scholars have even put forth theories that the structure was not originally designed to serve religious purposes in the first place.

Sophisticated beyond the Spaniards' wildest imaginings, these people were the Aztecs, the Maya, and related cultures that shared common traditions of religion, government, the arts, engineering, and trade. You'll focus mainly on the Maya, who have been in Mesoamerica for thousands of years, and the Aztecs, who mysteriously appeared late and rose swiftly to power. Why were the Aztecs so quickly defeated by the conquistadors, while the Maya resisted the invaders for generations? Although the Spanish eventually conquered all of Mesoamerica, much remains of the original cultures. Beautiful artifacts fill museums. Impressive ruins dot the landscape. And millions of descendants of ancient Mesoamericans still live in their ancestral homes, speaking native languages and practicing time-honored traditions. Title: Christ Actually Subtitle: The Son of God for the Secular Age Author: James Carroll Narrator: James Carroll Format: Unabridged Length: 13 hrs and 38 mins Language: English Release date: 11-13-14 Publisher: Penguin Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 28 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: A New York Times best-selling and widely admired Catholic writer explores how we can retrieve transcendent faith in modern times Critically acclaimed and best-selling author James Carroll has explored every aspect of Christianity, faith, and Jesus Christ, except this central one: What can we believe about - and how can we believe in - Jesus in the 21st century in light of the atrocities of the 20th century and the drift from religion that followed? What Carroll has discovered through decades of writing and lecturing is that he is far from alone in clinging to a received memory of Jesus that separates him from his crucial identity as a Jew, and therefore as a human. Yet if Jesus were not taken as divine, he would be of no interest to us. What can that mean now? Paradoxically, the key is his permanent Jewishness. No Christian himself, Jesus actually transcends Christianity. Drawing on both a wide range of scholarship as well as his own acute searching as a believer, Carroll takes a fresh look at the most familiar narratives of all - Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. Not simply another book about the "historical Jesus," he takes the challenges of science and contemporary philosophy seriously, even as he retrieves the power of Jesus' profound ordinariness, as an answer to his own last question - what is the future of Jesus Christ? - as the key to a renewal of faith.

Title: Before Atlantis Subtitle: The Land That Time Forgot Author: Frank Joseph Narrator: Paul Hughes, OH Krill, Frank Joseph Format: Original Recording Length: 52 mins Language: English Release date: 10-22-14 Publisher: World Wide Multi Media Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: Exploring emerging and suppressed evidence from archaeology, anthropology, and biology, Frank Joseph challenges conventional theories of evolution, the age of humanity, the origins of civilization, and the purpose of megaliths around the world. He reveals 20-million-year-old quartzite tools discovered in the remains of extinct fauna in Argentina and other evidence of ancient pre-human cultures from which we are not descended. Joseph traces the genesis of modern human civilization to Indonesia and the Central Pacific 75,000 years ago, launched by a catastrophic volcanic eruption that abruptly reduced humanity from two million to a few thousand individuals worldwide. Tying in his extensive research into Atlantis and Lemuria, Joseph provides a 20-million-year timeline of the rise and fall of ancient civilizations, both human and pre-human, the evolutionary stages of humanity, and the catastrophes and resulting climate changes that triggered them all--events that our relatively young civilization may soon experience.

Title: Jesus on Trial Subtitle: A Lawyer Affirms the Truth of the Gospel Author: David Limbaugh Narrator: Walter Dixon Format: Unabridged Length: 12 hrs and 16 mins Language: English Release date: 09-08-14 Publisher: Brilliance Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 325 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: In Jesus on Trial, New York Times bestselling author David Limbaugh applies his lifetime of legal experience to a unique new undertaking: making a case for the gospels as hard evidence of the life and work of Jesus Christ. Limbaugh, a practicing attorney and former professor of law, approaches the canonical gospels with the same level of scrutiny he would apply to any legal document and asks all the necessary questions about the story of Jesus told through Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. His analysis of the texts becomes profoundly personal as he reflects on his own spiritual and intellectual odyssey from determined skeptic to devout Christian. Ultimately, Limbaugh concludes that the words Christians have treasured for centuries stand up to his exhaustive enquiry - including his examination of historical and religious evidence beyond the gospels - and thereby affirms Christian faith, spirituality, and tradition.

Ultimately, Goldsworthy realizes the full complexity of Caesar's character and shows why his political and military leadership continues to resonate some 2,000 years later. Big Gods Audiobook by Ara Norenzayan

https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/audiobook/73/ to download full audiobooks of your choice for free. Title: Big Gods Subtitle: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict Author: Ara Norenzayan Narrator: Paul Nixon Format: Unabridged Length: 8 hrs and 33 mins Language: English Release date: 05-05-14 Publisher: Audible Studios Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 38 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: How did human societies scale up from small, tight-knit groups of hunter-gatherers to the large, anonymous, cooperative societies of today - even though anonymity is the enemy of cooperation? How did organized religions with "Big Gods" - the great monotheistic and polytheistic faiths - spread to colonize most minds in the world? In Big Gods, Ara Norenzayan makes the surprising and provocative argument that these fundamental puzzles about the origins of civilization are one and the same, and answer each other. Once human minds could conceive of supernatural beings, Norenzayan argues, the stage was set for rapid cultural and historical changes that eventually led to large societies with Big Gods - powerful, omniscient, interventionist deities concerned with regulating the moral behavior of humans. How? As the saying goes, "watched people are nice people." It follows that people play nice when they think Big Gods are watching them, even when no one else is. Yet at the same time that sincere faith in Big Gods unleashed unprecedented cooperation within ever-expanding groups, it also introduced a new source of potential conflict between competing groups. In some parts of the world, such as northern Europe, secular institutions have precipitated religion's decline by usurping its community-building functions. These societies with atheist majorities--some of the most cooperative, peaceful, and prosperous in the world - climbed religion's ladder, and then kicked it away. So while Big Gods answers fundamental questions about the origins and spread of world religions, it also helps us understand another, more recent social transition--the rise of cooperative societies without belief in gods.

The Ark Before Noah Audiobook by Irving Finkel

Title: The Ark Before Noah Subtitle: Decoding the Story of the Flood Author: Irving Finkel Narrator: Irving Finkel, Gareth Armstrong Format: Unabridged Length: 9 hrs and 2 mins Language: English Release date: 04-30-14 Publisher: Tantor Audio Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 82 votes Genres: History, Ancient Publisher's Summary: Since the Victorian period, it has been understood that the story of Noah, iconic in the Book of Genesis, and a central motif in Judaism, Christianity and Islam, derives from a much older story that existed centuries before in ancient Babylon. But the relationship between the Babylonian and biblical traditions was shrouded in mystery. Then, in 2009, Irving Finkel, a curator at the British Museum and a world authority on ancient Mesopotamia, found himself playing detective when a member of the public arrived at the museum with an intriguing cuneiform tablet from a family collection. Not only did the tablet reveal a new version of the Babylonian Flood Story; the ancient poet described the size and completely unexpected shape of the ark, and gave detailed boat building specifications. Decoding this ancient message wedge by cuneiform wedge, Dr. Finkel discovered where the Babylonians believed the ark came to rest and developed a new explanation of how the old story ultimately found its way into the Bible. In The Ark Before Noah, Dr. Finkel takes us on an adventurous voyage of discovery, opening the door to an enthralling world of ancient voices and new meanings. Critic Reviews: "[Finkel's] conclusions will send ripples into the world of creationism and among ark hunters." (Guardian)
