Young also expresses regret for the environmental impact of his past cars, and now passionately advocates the use of clean energy. Special Deluxe is a mix of memoir and environmental politics by one of the most gifted and influential artists of our time.

Adrenalized: Life, Def Leppard, and Beyond by Phil Collen

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/247512 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Adrenalized: Life, Def Leppard, and Beyond Author: Phil Collen Narrator: Steve West Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 6 hours 47 minutes Release date: October 27, 2015 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 4.33 of Total 3 Ratings of Narrator: 5 of Total 2 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: A revelatory, redemptive, and “wild...juicy” (Rolling Stone) memoir from the lead guitarist of the legendary hard rock band Def Leppard—the first ever written by one of its members—chronicling the band’s extraordinary rise to superstardom and how they maintained it for three decades. Meet Phil Collen. You may know him as the lead guitarist in Def Leppard, whose signature song “Pour Some Sugar on Me” is still as widely enjoyed as when it debuted in 1988. Maybe you’ve heard of him as the rock star that gave up alcohol and meat more than twenty-five years ago. Most likely you’ve seen him shirtless—in photos or in real life—flaunting his impeccably toned body to appreciative female fans. But it wasn’t always like this. Collen worked his way up from nothing, teaching himself guitar from scratch and slogging it out in London-based pub bands for years; that is, until Def Leppard formed and transformed from unknowns to icons, from playing openers in near-empty arenas to headlining in those same stadiums and selling them out every night. But as Collen discovered, true overnight success is a myth. Like the other band members, he had to struggle and fight his way to the top; in the end, he says, “our work ethic saved us.” Just as it still does. Adrenalized is an amazing underdog tale featuring a bunch of ordinary working-class lads who rose to mega-stardom, overcoming incredible obstacles—such as drummer Rick Allen losing an arm in a car crash and the tragic death of guitarist Steve Clark, Phil’s musical soul mate. Featuring personal, never-before-seen photos of Collen and his band mates on stage and off, Adrenalized is a fascinating account of the failures, triumphs, challenges, and rock-solid dedication it takes to make dreams come true.

Other world leaders he interviewed included Nelson Mandela, Mikhail Gorbachev, Vladimir Putin, Henry Kissinger, Benazir Bhutto, Shimon Peres, Yasser Arafat and Benjamin Netanyahu. Many of these encounters were set amid the turbulence of world events with the interviews becoming defining moments of history themselves. And yet there was so much more than politics: Frost’s interviews saw him lock horns with film stars, royalty, musicians, comedians, authors and sporting heroes. His range was unique and extraordinary and is unlikely ever to be equalled. From his humble background as the son of a Methodist minister, through his defining years at Cambridge and then quickly onwards through the 1960s to when Frost became the most successful TV host in the world, his work defined the mood of the moment. During that period, Frost didn’t just report the news, he made the news. This would be a trait he carried throughout his life and career. Frost: That Was The Life That Was, written in collaboration with Sir David Frost's wife and three sons, features many unpublished writings from Frost and exclusive access to his vast archive. It also offers opinions on Frost from his extraordinary list of friends. Frost is an epic story of personal achievement set amidst a rapidly changing world, encountering the great and the good that have dominated news and entertainment over the last fifty years.

He tells the detailed stories, experiences, and emotions behind such beloved songs as “Alison,” “Accidents Will Happen,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Oliver’s Army,” “Welcome to the Working Week,” “Radio Radio,” “Shipbuilding,” and “Veronica,” the last of which is one of a number of songs revealed to connect to the lives of the previous generations of his family. Costello chronicles his musical apprenticeship, a child's view of his father Ross MacManus' career on radio and in the dancehall; his own initial almost comical steps in folk clubs and cellar dive before his first sessions for Stiff Record, the formation of the Attractions, and his frenetic and ultimately notorious third U.S. tour. He takes readers behind the scenes of Top of the Pops and Saturday Night Live, and his own show, Spectacle, on which he hosted artists such as Lou Reed, Elton John, Levon Helm, Jesse Winchester, Bruce Springsteen, and President Bill Clinton.  The idiosyncratic memoir of a singular man, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink is destined to be a classic.

Title: Dancing with Myself Author: Billy Idol Narrator: Billy Idol Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 12 hours 11 minutes Release date: September 29, 2015 Ratings: Ratings of Book: 3.89 of Total 9 Ratings of Narrator: 5 of Total 4 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: A Rolling Stone Top 10 Best Music Books of the Year “That’s what I’m talking about…Of all these memoirs, Dancing With Myself was the only one that stimulated my envy—made me want to be Billy Idol for five minutes….He’s a genuine romantic, writing in a kind of overheated journalese about his London punk rock roots…and then falling head over heels for America.” —James Parker, The New York Times Book Review In this highly original memoir—following Billy Idol from his childhood in England to his rise to fame at the height of the punk-pop revolution—the iconic superstar tells the real story behind the sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll that he is so fabulously famous for, in his own utterly indelible voice. An early architect of punk rock’s sound, style, and fury, whose lip-curling sneer and fist-pumping persona vaulted him into pop’s mainstream as one of MTV’s first megastars, Billy Idol remains, to this day, a true rock ‘n’ roll icon. Now, in his New York Times bestselling autobiography, Dancing with Myself, Idol delivers an electric, “refreshingly honest” (Daily News, New York) account of his journey to fame—from his early days as front man of the pioneering UK punk band Generation X to the decadent life atop the dance-rock kingdom he ruled—delivered with the same in-your-face attitude and fire his fans have embraced for decades. Beyond adding his uniquely qualified perspective to the story of the evolution of rock, Idol is a brash, lively chronicler of his own career. A survivor’s tale at its heart, this sometimes chilling and always riveting account of one man’s creative drive joining forces with unbridled human desire is unmistakably literary in its character and brave in its sheer willingness to tell. With it, Billy Idol is destined to emerge as one of the great writers among his musical peers. “I am hopelessly divided between the dark and the good, the rebel and the saint, the sex maniac and the monk, the poet and the priest, the demagogue and the populist. Pen to paper, I’ve put it all down, every bit from the heart. I’m going on out a limb here, so watch my back.” —Billy Idol

Out here, a dark-skinned woman’s traditional hair color is honey blonde.”) “Player” tells the story of Kaling being seduced and dumped by a female friend in L.A. (“I had been replaced by a younger model. And now they had matching bangs.”) In “Unlikely Leading Lady,” she muses on America’s fixation with the weight of actresses, (“Most women we see onscreen are either so thin that they’re walking clavicles or so huge that their only scenes involve them breaking furniture.”) And in “Soup Snakes,” Kaling spills some secrets on her relationship with her ex-boyfriend and close friend, B.J. Novak (“I will freely admit: my relationship with B.J. Novak is weird as hell.”)   Mindy turns the anxieties, the glamour, and the celebrations of her second coming-of-age into a laugh-out-loud funny collection of essays that anyone who’s ever been at a turning point in their life or career can relate to. And those who’ve never been at a turning point can skip to the parts where she talks about meeting Bradley Cooper.

Title: Permafrost, MN Series: Part of The Great Northern Audio Theatre Collection Author: Jerry Stearns, Brian Price Narrator: Donna Alexander, Irene Ruderman, A Full Cast Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 0 hours 30 minutes Release date: September 15, 2015 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: Permafrost is an unincorporated (and entirely concocted) town on the logging road, off the gravel road, off the county road from Big Falls, in Koochiching County, Minnesota. It went into the unusually hard winter of 1887–88 and never came out. Oh, it isn’t frozen in time, it’s just frozen. There is what is called a “microclimate” around Permafrost. About two square miles around the town and a lake are below freezing all year round. It doesn’t get bitter cold even in winter, or warm even in summer, just freezing, all the time. It’s no wonder Permafrost is the ice-fishingest place around. Permafrost, MN is an audio serial in thirteen three-minute episodes about the people who live and work in the town. Together they tell about one important event in the history of the town, and each episode tells a part of this tale with a short story of its own. You’ll meet Finch Shelmerdine and her parents who run the Frozen Filet Cafe. You’ll hear from Bux Hootkins, who lives in Permafrost but has a place in Texas that he visits in the summer because he likes the extremes. You’ll find Melody McCleod, Permafrost’s mail carrier and town gossip who, if there’s not enough to gossip about in a small town, just makes it up. Then there is Les Decksia, town historian, who claims he remembers the threat of a thaw back in ’69. And they are all a little nuts to live in a remote and frozen place like Permafrost, Minnesota. This is a very Minnesota program, with likable characters and humorous situations and events, written, produced, and performed by Minnesotans and richly enhanced with original music and sound effects. Permafrost, MN is one of the plays from the Great Northern Audio Theatre, which creates its own unique, original brand of lighthearted, comic stories that evoke the inventiveness of Firesign Theatre and the sophistication of Norman Corwin, celebrated American creator of radio drama. Permafrost, MN performers include Irene Ruderman, Donna Alexander, Don Cosgrove, Rebecca Fay, David Hennessey, Dean Johnson, Carolyn Press, Mark Sulander, Jerry Stearns. Original theme music is by Mike Wheaton. Radio music is by Darren Callahan.

Her perfect ’50s American childhood upturned by a newly acquired taste for rock ’n’ roll, motorbikes and the ‘get down boys’ seen at gigs in and around Cleveland – Mitch Ryder, the Jeff Beck Group, the Velvet Underground and David Bowie among the many. Wrapped up in the Kent State University riots and getting dangerously involved in the local biker and drug scenes, she escaped - to Mexico, Canada, Paris and finally London where she caught the embryonic punk scene just in time not only to witness it first-hand, but more importantly to seize the opportunity to form her own band, the Pretenders. Iggy Pop, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Vivienne & Malcolm, Ray Davies … on every page household names mingle with small town heroes as we shift from bedroom to biker HQ; from squat to practice room; from pub gig to Top Of The Pops – the long and crooked path to stardom, and for the Pretenders, ultimately, tragedy. That Chrissie Hynde is alive to tell the tale is, by her own admission, something of a miracle. Throughout she is brutally honest, wryly humorous and always highly entertaining. She has written one of the most evocative and colourful music memoirs to be published in recent years. Narrated by Rosanna Arquette.

Title: The Life of Riley, Vol. 1 Series: Part of The Classic Radio Collection Author: Hollywood 360 Narrator: William Bendix, A Full Cast Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 5 hours 50 minutes Release date: September 1, 2015 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: Created by Irving Brecher, The Life of Riley starred William Bendix as Brooklyn-born Chester A. Riley, a family man who worked as a wing riveter at the fictional Cunningham Aircraft plant in California. The stories were usually set at home, where Riley would cheerfully disrupt life with his malapropisms and ill-timed intervention into minor problems. His stock answer to every turn of fate became a popular catch phrase: “What a revoltin’ development this is!” Trouble usually arose when Riley received bad information from his coworker, Jim Gillis. Paula Winslowe played Riley’s wife, Peg; John Brown doubled as undertaker “Digger” O’Dell and Jim Gillis; Tommy Cook, Bobby Ellis, and Scotty Beckett each played the role of Riley’s son, Junior; and Sharon Douglas played the Riley’s daughter, Babs. Alan Reed, the voice of Fred Flintstone, played multiple characters, including Riley’s boss, Mr. Stevenson, as well as Peg’s father. The program aired on radio from 1944 until 1951, making a successful transition to television in 1949. Due to a contract dispute, Bendix couldn’t initially play Riley on television, so the role went to Jackie Gleason. In 1953 Bendix was free to star as Riley on the small screen and continued with it until 1958. Episodes include: “Cissio’s Marriage”“Riley the Dogcatcher”“Riley Fixes Dinner for Mother’s Day”“Fish Story”“The Boss’ Son-in-Law”“The Halloween Show: Haunted House”“Big Football Bet”“Riley’s Mash Note at Night School”“Wedding Anniversary”“Five Dollars Is Missing”“Gambling Does Not Pay”“Riley Thinks He’s Promoted”

Title: Ralph Peer and the Making of Popular Roots Music Author: Barry Mazor Narrator: Ketch Secor, Dom Flemons Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 11 hours 0 minutes Release date: July 7, 2015 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: This is the first biography of Ralph Peer, the adventurous—even revolutionary—A&R man and music publisher who saw the universal power locked in regional roots music and tapped it, changing the breadth and flavor of popular music around the world. It is the story of the life and fifty-year career, from the age of cylinder recordings to the stereo era, of the man who pioneered the recording, marketing, and publishing of blues, jazz, country, gospel, and Latin music. The book tracks Peer’s role in such breakthrough events as the recording of Mamie Smith’s “Crazy Blues” (the record that sparked the blues craze), the first country recording sessions with Fiddlin’ John Carson, his discovery of Jimmie Rodgers and the Carter Family at the famed Bristol sessions, the popularizing of Latin American music during World War II, and the postwar transformation of music on the airwaves that set the stage for the dominance of R&B, country, and rock ’n’ roll. But this is also the story of a man from humble Midwestern beginnings who went on to build the world’s largest independent music publishing firm, fostering the global reach of music that had previously been specialized, localized, and marginalized. Ralph Peer redefined the ways promising songs and performers were identified, encouraged, and promoted; rethought how far regional music might travel; and changed our very notions of what pop music can be.

Title: Dreams to Remember: Otis Redding, Stax Records, and the Transformation of Southern Soul Author: Mark Ribowsky Narrator: Dan John Miller Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 10 hours 49 minutes Release date: June 1, 2015 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: When he died suddenly at the age of twenty-six, Otis Redding (1941-1967) had already become the conscience of a new kind of music. Sure, Berry Gordy might have built the first black-owned music empire at Motown, but Redding was doing something as historic: mainstreaming black music within the whitest bastions of the post-Confederate south. As a result, the Redding story still largely untold is one of great conquest but, sadly, grand tragedy. Now, in this transformative work, Mark Ribowsky contextualizes Redding's life within the larger cultural movements of his era, whisking us from the sinful clubs of Macon to the trendsetting studios in Memphis and, finally, to the pulsating stage of the Monterey Music Festival where, in a single set, Redding immortalized himself as soul legend. What emerges in Dreams To Remember is not only a triumph of music history but also a reclamation of a visionary who would come to define an entire era.

'Unvarnished. Funny. Leaving no stone unturned.' . . . So say the publishers about this book I've written. What I say is that this is the story of my life, told as clear as a Texas sky and in the same rhythm that I lived it. It's a story of restlessness and the purity of the moment and living right. Of my childhood in Abbott, Texas, to the Pacific Northwest, from Nashville to Hawaii and all the way back again. Of selling vacuum cleaners and encyclopedias while hosting radio shows and writing song after song, hoping to strike gold. It's a story of true love, wild times, best friends, and barrooms, with a musical sound track ripping right through it. My life gets lived on the road, at home, and on the road again, tried and true, and I've written it all down from my heart to yours. Signed, Willie Nelson.

Blood, Sweat and My Rock 'n' Roll Years: Is Steve Katz A Rock Star? by Steve Katz

Please visit https://thebookvoice.com/podcasts/1/audiobook/245404 to listen full audiobooks. Title: Blood, Sweat and My Rock 'n' Roll Years: Is Steve Katz A Rock Star? Author: Steve Katz Narrator: Dan Triandiflou Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 8 hours 23 minutes Release date: May 1, 2015 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: On paper Steve Katz's career rivals anyone's except the 1960s' and '70's biggest stars: the Monterey Pop Festival with the legendary Blues Project, Woodstock with Blood, Sweat & Tears, and even producing rock's most celebrated speed addict, Lou Reed. There were world tours, and his résumé screams 'Hall of Fame' — it won't be long before BS&T are on that ballot. He has three Grammies (ten nominations), three Downbeat Reader's Poll Awards, three gold records, one platinum record, and one quadruple platinum platter (the second Blood, Sweat & Tears album), not to mention three gold singles with BS&T. All together, he's sold close to 29 million records. He had affairs with famous female folk singers, made love to Jim Morrison's girlfriend Pam when Jim was drunk and abusive, partied with Elizabeth Taylor and Groucho Marx, dined with Rudolf Nureyev, conversed with Martin Luther King, Jr. and Tennessee Williams, hung out with Andy Warhol, jammed with everyone from Mose Allison to Jimi Hendrix, and was told to get a haircut by both Mickey Spillane and Danny Thomas. But his memoir is more Portnoy's Complaint than the lurid party-with-your-pants-down memoir that has become the norm for rock 'n' roll books. It's an honest and personal account of a life at the edge of the spotlight—a privileged vantage point that earned him a bit more objectivity and earnest outrage than a lot of his colleagues, who were too far into the scene to lay any honest witness to it. Set during the Greenwich Village folk/rock scene, the Sixties' most celebrated venues and concerts, and behind closed doors on international tours and grueling studio sessions, this is the unlikely story of a rock star as nerd, nerd as rock star, a nice Jewish boy who got to sit at the cool kid's table and score the hot chicks.

Drawing on new interviews with surviving members and people in their inner circle along with previously unknown details gleaned from the group's extensive archives, David Browne, acclaimed music journalist and contributing editor at Rolling Stone, lends the Dead's epic story the vivid feel of a novel. He sheds new light on the band's beginnings, music, dynamics, and struggles since Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. No longer dismissed as relics of the hippie era, a new generation has lionized the Dead for creating a culture that paved the way for social networking, free music swapping, and the uncompromising anti-corporate attitude of indie rock. Now, fifty years after the band first began changing rock 'n' roll—both sonically and psychically—So Many Roads paints the most vivid portrait yet of the Grateful Dead, one of the most enduring institutions in American music and culture.

Title: The Amos ’n’ Andy Show, Vol. 2 Series: Part of The Classic Radio Collection Author: Hollywood 360 Narrator: Charles Correll, Freeman Gosden Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 5 hours 17 minutes Release date: April 1, 2015 Genres: Comedy, Satire & Parody Publisher's Summary: Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll made their radio debut January 12, 1926, as the comedic, blackface characters Sam 'n' Henry. On March 19, 1928, they introduced Amos 'n' Andy, which went on to become one of the most popular and longest-running programs in radio history. During the height of the show's popularity, almost the entire country listened to the fifteen-minute adventures of Amos and Andy that aired Monday through Friday. Department stores open in the evening piped in the broadcasts so shoppers wouldn't miss an episode; movie theaters scheduled their features to end just prior to the start of Amos 'n' Andy so they, too, could pipe it in. The characters were members of the Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge, of which George Stevens was the 'Kingfish.' Amos and Andy ran the Fresh-Air Taxi Company, with the more stable, married Amos doing most of the work while Andy chased girls. In 1943, after 4,091 quarter-hour episodes, it switched to a half-hour weekly comedy. While the five-a-week show often had a quiet, easygoing feeling, the new version was a brassy Hollywood-style production, complete with a studio audience, a full cast of supporting actors, and a full orchestra. Many of the half-hour programs were written by Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, later the writing team for Leave It to Beaver and The Munsters. In the new version, Amos became a minor character to the more dominant Andy and Kingfish duo. The new Amos 'n' Andy show lasted for the next twelve years as one of radio's most popular weekly programs. Episodes include: 'Violets''Culture''Diamond Ring''Sunday, Monday or Always''Madam Queen, Part 1''Madam Queen, Part 2''Insurance, Part 1''Insurance, Part 2''Amnesia''Get Acquainted''Chauffeur''Secretary'

Title: Furious Cool: Richard Pryor and The World That Made Him Author: Joe Henry, David Henry Narrator: Dion Graham Format: Unabridged Audiobook Length: 9 hours 4 minutes Release date: November 5, 2013 Genres: Arts & Entertainment Publisher's Summary: Richard Pryor was arguably the single most influential performer of the second half of the twentieth century, and certainly he was the most successful black actor/comedian ever. Controversial and somewhat enigmatic in his lifetime, Pryor's performances opened up a new world of possibilities, merging fantasy with angry reality in a way that wasn't just new—it was heretofore unthinkable. His childhood in Peoria, Illinois, was spent just trying to survive. Yet the culture into which Richard Pryor was born—his mother was a prostitute; his grandmother ran the whorehouse—helped him evolve into one of the most innovative and outspoken performers ever, a man who attracted admiration and anger in equal parts. Both a brilliant comedian and a very astute judge of what he could get away with, Pryor was always pushing the envelope, combining anger and pathos, outrage and humor, into an art form, laying the groundwork for the generations of comedians who followed, including such outstanding performers as Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, and Louis C.K. Now, in this groundbreaking and revelatory work, David and Joe Henry bring him to life both as a man and as an artist, providing an in-depth appreciation of his talent and his lasting influence, as well as an insightful examination of the world he lived in and the influences that shaped both his persona and his art.

His parents were charming and gregarious, their five children much-loved and given freedom typical of the time. As he grew older, the holidays were filled with loud and lively parties in his parents' Cornish barn. But ever-present was the unpredicatible mood of his bipolar father, with Rick frequently the focus of his anger and sadness. When Rick was 18 his father killed himself. Emotionally adrift, Rick left for Australia, carrying a suitcase stamped with his father's initials. Manual labour in the outback followed by adventures in America and Mexico toughened up the naive public schoolboy, but at heart he was still lost and unsure what to do with his life. Eventually, Cornwall called him home. From the entrepreneurial days of his mobile disco, the Purple Tiger, to his first, unlikely unlikely nightclub where much of the time was spent breaking up drink-fuelled fights, Rick charts his personal journey in a way that is both wry and perceptive; engaging and witty. Narrated by Rick Stein himself.

National Book Awards Autobiography of the Year 2013. Born the son of a Billingsgate market porter at the height of the Second World War, David Jason spent his early life dodging bombs and bullies, both with impish good timing. Giving up on an unloved career as an electrician, he turned his attention to acting and soon, through a natural talent for making people laugh, found himself working with the leading lights of British comedy in the 1960s and '70s: Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Bob Monkhouse and Ronnie Barker. Barker would become a mentor to David, leading to hugely successful stints in Porridge and Open All Hours. It wasn’t until 1981, kitted out with a sheepskin jacket, a flat cap, and a clapped-out Reliant Regal, that David found the part that would capture the nation’s hearts: the beloved Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter in Only Fools and Horses. Never a one-trick pony, he had an award-winning spell as TV’s favourite detective Jack Frost, took a country jaunt as Pop Larkin in the Darling Buds of May, and even voiced a crime-fighting cartoon rodent in the much-loved children’s show Danger Mouse. But life hasn't all been so easy: from missing out on a key role in Dad’s Army to nearly drowning in a freak diving accident, David has had his fair share of ups and downs, and has lost some of his nearest and dearest along the way. David’s is a touching, funny and warm-hearted story, which charts the course of his incredible five decades at the top of the entertainment business. He's been a shopkeeper and a detective inspector, a crime-fighter and a market trader, and he ain't finished yet. As Del Boy would say, it's all cushty. The introduction to the David Jason audiobook is narrated by David himself.
