Popular Horror • Another Small Haul
There are three books in here that you may have heard of! Also, one that may be new to you. Revisiting the backward bookshelf, I added one book to my reading list from there, and added another. In this episode, I get into some of the popular horror books I've picked up recently, as well as a more obscure title for fans of strange stories. I'll have a dedicated review video coming up, as well as the top books for next month. In the meantime I have gotten quite a bit of good reading done! Thank in part to good recommendations, so if there is something you think I ought to read let me know. Also - over at patreon, I expanded on my question about Jack in the Box and The Swords using your PDF version of Pray Lied Eve 2 [ / 156581106 ] so let me know what you think! ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Letters to the Purple Satin Killer by Joshua Chaplinsky https://amzn.to/4cS1oiFBetween Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman https://amzn.to/4tCxSVoBuffalo Hunter Hunter by Stephen Graham Jones https://amzn.to/4sX4UyaCold Hand in Mine by Robert Aickman https://amzn.to/4eb4JMcPsychosomatic Slaughterhouse by Alicia Durst https://amzn.to/42wiyNYBookworms horror zine https://www.bookwormshorror.com/Halt by Foetus https://www.foetus.org/content/discog...#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber Typical Books 388- Another Spring Haul✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Sorrow's Leap • An Unexpectedly Modern Haunting
Today I'd like to review a fun, if not light, horror by Chris Sorensen. The Haunting of Sorrow's Leap is the story of a very reluctant psychic with fading powers who is wrapped up in a sort of locked-room mystery. Similar to 13 Ghosts or Hill House, she is cloistered with other psychics for a chance at cashing out after staying a night in a haunted mansion. What this book is not, however, is a typical gothic horror story. I didn’t expect it to be a meta horror like Kill Creek, and was pleasantly surprised that it was. The cover drew me in entirely, and I had wanted to read more Sorensen after the Nightmare Room. It was a book about a voiceover actor and I really liked how the author wove his knowledge into the story. This is no exception. Light on scares and not gory at all, I hesitate to say this is cozy or a thriller; it is a tale of a haunted house, and haunted people with some very dynamic and well wrought characters. While I was drawn in by the illusion of Sorrow’s Leap as a cliffside gothic, I got so much more from this modern haunting and tale of hidden talents and strength in numbers. ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮The Haunting of Sorrow's Leap by Chris Sorenesenhttps://amzn.to/41IhwhK#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. 6 Vintage Horror Staples • I’ll Never Stop Recommending These Books
Here are six classic vintage horror books I'll always recommend, and will never ever part with. There are certain horror novels that never leave your mind. These ones are worn, familiar; stories you circle back to weekly in thought and conversation. They’re all vintage, all widely loved, and most of them have long since slipped into other forms and other mediums or inspired legions of writers to work these themes into their own work. What I think about is how startlingly modern they must have felt when they first appeared. These weren’t dusty relics when they were written like they are now! They were sharp, unsettling, and a little bit dangerous, and even now, they still have a way of lingering. We all strive to read books like this on the regular, don't we? This is what the goal of book hunting is. And then, some of of us wish we could write like this. These six books don't only thrill me as a reader, they are why I write... well, these and Stephen King books 🩶✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Hell House by Richard MathesonThe Amityville Horror by Jay AnsonPsycho by Robert BlockRosemary's Baby by Ira LevinThe Stepford Wives by Ira LevinBlack Christmas by Thomas Altman#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. This Horror Feels Like a Memory • Nowhere Burning
This is a horror review of Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward, focusing on how trauma shapes its characters and how the story feels more like a memory than a traditional narrative. This is a mainly psychological horror story that feels fragmented, links to something half-remembered that I could not find in the news...A good example of horror done well without explicit shock value; true terror and horror rooted in its core, channelled underground, and floating in the air.Catriona Ward is not only instant buy for me, but instant immersion. It helps that I love outdoors horror, and this takes place at an abandoned woodland sanctuary. Nowhere was a compound of sorts, where a very rich man did strange and dangerous things. This was another through-line for me; runaway kids. Specifically, kids running away to an abandoned place in the wilderness.Pick up a copy here: https://amzn.to/3PHdrHD✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber Typical Books 383 - Nowhere Burning✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever🩶As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Exploring Richard Laymon • My Top 6
Richard Laymon wrote a lot of books, and I am sure I have read more than half of them. I have my favourites for sure, and choosing a top five is impossible so here is a Top Six... plus another one. Everyone has their darlings, and you'll not be surprised by a few usual suspects; Island, The Woods are Dark, and Cuts. These may be some people's less cherished picks too. There is no accounting for taste and for certain, tastes can change. Since I am embarking on this slow reread of my 'darlings' I thought we could take stock here and now of the top six and once I have read every Laymon on my shelf, come back and see if the lists still match. So far so good!Do you have a number one or top three Richard Laymon books? (and why is it Island?) I am sure Savage ranks quite high and I have hopes of it entering the race soon! Here is the ranking so far: https://tiermaker.com/create/lydias-b...✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮Night in the Lonesome October review: • Night in the Lonesome October review • A r... Weird Winter and a Splatter Spring • Horror Haul
Over the winter I didn't get much reading done, but I sure did acquire a lot of books! Here is a quick roundup up what I read recently, and a longer chat about the horror books I now have in my library. We play a rousing game of whats-in-the-box and check out a coveted collection of papery periodicals. One highlight here is our trip to the Canadian War Museum. New Horror Books • 14 Chillers for December!
Happy December! The shortest day of the year where I live is fast approaching, as is the cold snow. There are 14 books that caught my eye - lucky 13 plus one more from November. I added in two thrillers and you'll also find quite a few story collections here. Two things I read more of in the winter months are short stories and oddball thrillers. Last winter I read some Riley Sager books and found them incredibly cozy. When I saw the vast amount of wintery thrillers I decided I wanted a few on the list. There are also not as many stand-alone horror books out in the winter for whatever reason. Maybe we use up all of our creative juices in the fall and harvest season and writers are all busy writing. Typical Books 370 - Edward Lee • The Header series is extreme horror royalty
As mentioned previously, I have a great addition to my extreme horror collection, specifically for my Edward Lee shelf. If you want to hear about the convention, DreadCon, check the previous video DreadCon • An indie horror haul dream! for a load of indie author books! Edward Lee has been a huge inspiration to me as a writer and reader of horror. From the first time my mother and I stumbled upon the City Infernal series, or that time I special ordered 'Goon' while feeling homesick at college, or finding Gast at the local library, to last week (and every time) someone discovered his books on the ExtremeHorrorLit subreddit; my heart grows a little (blacker) each time. Now that he has announced his retirement from writing, I thought I'd take the plunge and pick up some hard to find and just out of my price range books - only because I was lucky enough to find them in my home province!Huge thank you to Fred for collecting and giving these books a 'fine' home. Reach out to me for Fred's Fine Editions contact information if you are looking for hard to find or excellent horror fare.Buy Fred's book here: https://subterraneanpress.com/the-wor...From the Deadite Press website: Edward Lee is the premier practitioner of splatterspunk and has written over fifty books. He is the author of such hardcore horror classics as The Bighead, The Pig and the House, Gast, and many more books to test your gag reflex. Typical Books 369 - DreadCon 2025 • What books did I buy?
This is the second annual DreadCon; and I am happy to support this since there is nothing like it near me. I wish there were more horror conventions in Canada!I took the train in to Burlington - I’d not been to Toronto for over ten years, and not downtown since I was a kid. So happy see writers I am a huge fan of, have come to know well, and writers whose work I’ve reviewed under one roof.S.J. So great to meet on his first convention ever and his son’s first trip to Canada - they had so much to choose from it was hard to decide so I grabbed Satacnic Static for the great title. Now, I didn’t see enough panels. I sat in on Queer Horror, Canadian Horror, and the Dacre Stoker talk. I missed all the readings I wanted to attend though, so I have to plan better next year. I also picked up some great extreme horror from Fred’s Fine Editions which I will cover in my next video. • Edward Lee • The Header books https://www.dreadconcan.com/https://sjshank.com/The Canadian Horror panel: • dReadcon Canadian Horror Panel / @darkbites ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮15 books! Here are 40 new horror books for September! Two of these I am reading this month, and even more I want to pick up. Typical Books 365 - Revival by Stephen King • I do love a good storm!
Today I am talking about Stephen King, specifically the 'electrifying' book Revival. I share my thoughts about the book and make connections to my love for weather, other King books, and how many meanings 'revival' can have here. I hope you like this booktube video!Revival has been recommended to me online and off for years then sat on my shelf since finding this at a book sale. I love the themes so I feel foolish for not picking it up earlier. This is Stephen King at his best, and for a more modern choice it is refreshing that we can recommend a book that is not older than I am as a quintessential King.On that topic, Revival was his 53rd, and it is always amazing to me how his voice is unwavering, and while I did not see a nod to constant readers in a foreword, the whole book is fan service notes back-to-back. While I went into this knowing it was religious(ish), from the jacket copy, recommendations and the title, I was intrigued by the lightning angle on the cover. I had not known abut the Doctor Frankenstein inspirations throughout and was delighted by each incarnation of Jacobs as we follow his experiments and fascination with electricity. ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮To come on the show: the latest by Eric LaRocca#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber #stephenking ✮✮✮✮✮✮ Nails by EZNails semi-cured gel wraps - not sponsored but I have a referral code 🩶 https://eznails.ca?kb_ref=65a1ced449134▹ See if there are books in the Shoppe https://typicalbooks.com/shoppe/▹ Bookworm Central on Patreon ▹ / typicalbooks ▹ Bookworm merch is here! ▹ https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever▹ Books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6▹ A list of horror books out each month ▹ https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Typical Books 364 - August Reading Forecast • Going Full Stephen King
July was a fairly busy reading month and I head into August with a few half-read books, so more on that soon, I want to wrap them all up in this first week so I can get to this readathon! As noted in the poll posted earlier, All-In-August will be all Stephen King. I'm reading, in order:RevivalFairy TaleThe Girl Who Loved Tom GordonFor more on Stephen King: https://amzn.to/47kkNYg and https://stephenking.com/Also, my thoughts on recent reads: Full Brutal by Kristopher Triana, Toadhead by Andrew Lyall, Tales told around a Strange Fire by Bud Templin, Looking Glass Sound by Catriona Ward, and The Knave of Graves by S. J. Shank. Some books to come: No One Rides for Free by Judith Sonnet, How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix (maybe, eventually, it was on sale). I have a feeling I may get them all read this month but promised myself I'd put a book down if it was proving to be a chore. Since that represents all of the SK books I have here that I have not read, I may dip in to Sleeping Beauties if I do run out of King to read - since that is two King's in one!Roya's launch video: • All-In August Readathon & My Stephen King ... ✮ Mergers and Acquisitions ✮#booktube #youtube #horrorbooks #horrortuber #allinaugust✮✮✮✮✮✮ Nails by EZNails - they are semi-cured wraps I simply adore. Reading and Rumps • A Richard Laymon Read-a-thon!
You know I love me some Richard Laymon. He is one author I have read every summer for the past few years too. So, thank you, Regina for organizing this event! This June, buckle up for a backwoods bloodbath, lusty librarians, haunted basements, and enough bad decisions to fill a swamp. We're honouring the master of pulpy mayhem, Richard Laymon, with a month-long read-a-long that's as unhinged as his characters.Grab a paperback, lower your standards, and prepare to scream, laugh, and possibly blush your way through the carnage. Scroll down for the prompts and join the madness..But beware: side effects may include uncontrollable screaming, raised eyebrows, and a full-blown case of Laymania!#ReadingandRumps #LaymaniaRegina of Regina’s Haunted Library and Alex, The Bookubus created this tag. When Horror Stops Being Scary • Why actually scary books may not exist
Today I want to talk about a critique I see all the time in the horror community. You see it in reviews, Reddit threads, BookTube comments—people asking for recommendations that will finally, actually, really scare them, like there’s one perfect book out there that’ll do the trick. Some seem to have bought into marketing and literally want a white-knuckled thrill-ride of scares... and that might just be impossible. Fear is incredibly personal, and what terrified one reader might feel totally flat to someone else. And more importantly most seasoned horror readers aren’t actually looking to be scared every time. This is just the genre and the themes they enjoy. It’s not always about fear—it’s about atmosphere, tension, projection, characters, and dark imagination. So I’ve pulled together seven reasons why horror novels might not be scaring you anymore—and why that’s not necessarily a bad thing.Let me know in the comments what the last book was that genuinely creeped you out—or if like me, you think horror doesn’t have to actually scare you to be great. April Reading Catchup • Buying less and reading more!
So far this month I've read quite a few advance reading copies of good books. One was a real fit for me with some writing style snags, and one was not a fit at all, but I read it anyway to see how the creatures fared. One book bought, TED Klein's Reassuring Tales; and one book gifted, Pieces of Madness by Kasey Pierce. Coming up I'll be reading Senseless by Ronal Malfi and a few more books off thebackward shelf. Speaking of which, I'll be tracking all of this a lot better using a new spreadsheet method. I've been looking for a better way to track my reading and this may just be the thing! Victorian Psycho • Naughty Notty Book Review
Victorian Psycho was a book that I noticed while compiling the new release list for February 2025. The yellow colour of the cover jumped out at me with the use of a fitting scalloped font and the oil painted girl’s face. You may recall that I likened this to the cover of the film Incident in a Ghostland. The book and film are very different but have a similar tone because in both there is someone completely unhinged rampaging around a gorgeous cluttered Victorian mansion. For readers that have sought the darkest of dark Victorian literature I think this would be a superb addition. The research and attention to detail about 19th century life are Illuminating and interesting. Of course it has modern element like a sophisticated worldview, modern pacing uses fairly genre language. This dance between dark disturbing and outright grotesque is something you would only find in contemporary literature. While it can be compared to a strange blend of Turn of the Screw, The Yellow Wallpaper and American Psycho, I think that there are also some film comparisons to be made with The Haunting of Hill House, the series Penny Dreadful and Crimson Peak. I absolutely enjoyed this book and it will seek previous books and forthcoming work from Virginia Feito. I listened to her interview on Talking Scared podcast, which was an interesting chat this Spanish-born author where we learn this is being made into a film right this very minute. A dark joy to read in a very cool tone, Victorian Psycho has been the most refreshingly sick books I’ve read so far this year. New Horror Books for March • 18 creepy covers and twisted tales!
There are 18 new horror books this month that caught my eye. Some of these covers are truly perfect, and we have everything from collections, gothics, and eco-horror to choose from. There is a mini-trend of using thorns on the covers this month, and only one with yellow text (insert sad trombone noise of lore and infamy here). Duotone covers remain a trend, though we see more photographic entries this time around. The most often used font is Helvetica, and that can't be a surprise as it is the most often used font in the entire world. I should say that anytime I say Helvetica, I do mean a grotesk type of font; a sans-serif Helvetica-like font. I don't do the research needed to name each one exactly. Arial, Grotesk, Impact, Proxima, who knows! What I call a bellbottom or bootleg or bootcut font is probably better described as a psychedelic or hippy font.As ever in horror, a lot of books feature black and houses on the covers, and this month is no exception. Late Winter Reading Catchup • Some Hits, Some Misses
Over the last month I was able to get into a few review copies, a potential Bram Stoker nominee, some of the books on the backward shelf, and plan my reading to come. Two if the most popular books I got to - and loved - were Victorian Psycho by Virginia Fieto and This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer. No wonder so many people had these on their reading list over the last few months! Really great work, on both counts. Reviews will be up on typicalbooks.com shortly. I read the wonderful MrBallen graphic novel which was very fun and wonderfully illustrated. If you've not watched his channel and like the 'strange, dark and mysterious' I'd check it out. After finishing an Eric LaRocca book I was not that keen on, I am looking forward to another. At Dark I Become Loathsome has had mixed reviews as well but there is nothing I like better than seeing a book out for myself. Coming up I have Pressure by Jeff Strand and with luck, Little Eve by Catroina Ward as well. 17 Best New Horror Reads: Sinister stories, stunning art for February
Back to regular books! 17 of them! There are quite a few books coming as if there were not enough last month and they are making up for it. So many covers this month feature a black background and bright yellow text. Lithograph or woodcut style is in vogue, as is madness and folk horror. Sure, we have some outliers like books about snuff films (yes, please) and books bucking the trend with black text on a slime green background, but it seems the stamped or inked look is in. We have quite a few debut authors here. If December and January had a lot of heavy hitters, in February we see a lot of new names on the front pages. So, enjoy this list! My Top Ten Horror Books of 2024 • Out of 40+ harrowing reads!
Another year, another top ten, and yet another where I did not make my goal of 52 books. Close! But not quite. The top ten surprised me in a few ways, but the very top book was a given for me ~ as with any year, that number one spot just sort of stands out. I also discuss a few plans going forward, like reading more Richard Laymon, Edward Lee, and Ronald Malfi - all of which feature here. Indeed, there is a Lee book in the mail as we speak, and a few more in the works. You may see a few books mentioned through the year - or even recently read - that are not in the list. Either I totally forgot them, they were not on Goodreads, or I did not actually finish them. Four honourable mentions that should have been here, with three making the top fifteen are: All These Steps Lead Down - Nelson W. Pyles Did You Hear What Eddie Gein Done? - Eric Powell and Harold Schechter Rare Specimen and Other Stories - S.J. Shank Acts of Violence: Twelve Tales of Terror - Marcus Hawke Nineteen Little Stab Wounds - Alexis DuBon As mentioned, I will be reading along with the #richardlaymonbookclub on instagram curated by @constantreader89! Flipping Unread Books • Reading What I Own
For the 2025 version of the Read What You Own Challenge, I decided to flip the script. And flip the books. Literally. I chose 26 books that I have not read from my shelves and turned them around to create a fore-edge shelf. This is an aesthetic style of shelving that many people dislike... and you know... it kind of looks neat when it is just one shelf like this. The list has some Stephen King, Eric LaRocca, Richard Laymon, Josh Malerman and more! So, after talking a little about the books I have read lately, and how great L'Entre-Sort bookshop is, we get into the 26 books, where they came from, why they sat unready and how excited I am to get to them. I'll choose a book every week or two to read and that is my challenge for the year sorted! Be sure to check out L'Entre-Sort of Etsy and subscribe to Madam LaMort's channel. Is it all to give us a boost in the dawn of 2025 that good things ar to come? If so... I believe it is working! See all of the books I talk about today at https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror. We have Lee, Larocca, Chapman, and Hendrix; plus a slew of other books with amazing cover art. Perhaps I am getting choosier or the art departments are working overtime. Extreme Horror Haul ft. Edward Lee + January Reads
I’ve read a good amount of books so far in January and had some amazing book mail too! I did get a chance to finish Linghun by Ai Jiang, and have wrapped up Strange Stones, The Rising: Selected Scenes from the End of the World, Wake Up and Open Your Eyes, then jumped into The Ushers by Edward Lee, a short story collection by one of my most favourite extreme horror authors. The Edward Lee book came from a shipment of books ordered from an amazing dealer and writer who is downsizing his collection - and there is more to come. I have a real soft spot for old Deadite Press books so there are a few of those, and maybe more Edward Lee eventually. For now, we have The Ushers, Dahmer’s Not Dead, Flesh Gothic, Brain Cheese Buffet, and White Trash Gothic 2. I swore I had White Trash Gothic so may have to find that one elsewhere, On top of that, I did order We Used to Live Here by Marcus Kliewer which is what I am reading now. To round out my January reading I picked two mystery books off of the backward shelf to begin the reading challenge for the year as well. If you are interested in extreme horror, there is more to come next week when I talk about the very cool ‘starter pack’ thread on reddit! ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm Central on Patreon ▹ https://www.patreon.com/typicalbooks ▹ Bookworm decor is here! ▹ https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials, the shop and news ▹ https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever ▹ Read books I wrote ▹ https://amzn.to/3k20OY6 ▹ A list of horror books out each month ▹ https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror ▹ Music by ænorex ▹ https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Fear Fuel for Yule • 21 winter horror novels
For every twenty Halloween and autumn horror books there must be at least one winter horror, or dare I say Christmas horror book out there. Chilly snowy horror is especially scary to me because for one, Christmas is creepy and unhinged, and most of all I can’t take the cold. I am not a Chrismtas fan, and indeed I resent capitalizing it. I love the look of winter, the idea of staying cozy, the starving wolves surrounding your cabin at night and firelight to fend off the shortening days. Winter sports are interesting to me but I’d rather chop wood over figure skating, ice fishing over downhill skiing. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing are really great but I’d rather take a winter stroll on a packed trail or winter market for sure. Even with winter horror I would rather hear the sound of snowfall over carols and seeing the story’s hero melting snow for water to survive over mixing drinks at a family dinner. Most of the big names in horror come out to play, however, and there is something for everyone on a list like this. If you are after more tinsel and mistletoe, there are hundreds of lists online, but I wanted a little list here that is well rounded and offers some of the best names in horror and a few smaller or less known titles too! The Shining by Stephen King Black Christmas by Thomas Altman Snow by Ronald Malfi Nos4A2 by Joe Hill The Christmas City Vampire Larry Diebert A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens Human Santapede by Adam Millard The Thief of Always by Clive Barker Snowblind by R. Saint Claire Served Cold by various edited by R. Saint Claire Where the Dead Go to Die by Aaron Dries and Mark Allan Gunnells Krampus by Brom Dead of Winter by Darcy Coates Voices in the Snow by Darcy Coates Ghost Story by Peter Straub Moon of the Crusted Snow by Waubgeshig Rice Hell house by Graham Masterson Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin Let Me In John A. Lindqvist A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons Honourable mentions! The Terror by Dan Simmons and The Hunger by Alma Katsu ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm Central on Patreon ▹ https://www.patreon.com/typicalbooks ▹ Bookworm decor is here! Best New horror books • Chilly holiday haunts for December 2024
Horror takes a holiday in the winter - but then, don't we all? Publishing agents, editors, bookbinders and print shops are no exception. Everything slows down in December, but we all still buy books. Sometimes many times more due to gifts! See all of the books I talk about today at https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror. Books are my gift of choice, and it is not even a celebration of Jolabokaflod; just wanting to spread bookworm joy. Usually there are more winter horror and holiday themed books to choose from but 2024 is a little slim. It is a little slim all around, as not many horror books are coming out this December at all; but I found some real gems for us! We start with three x-massy books, and dig into some new standalones, new collections and some splatter westerns to see us off into the sunset. Are you reading anything special this year? Maybe with so few new books coming out, we can read something a little different or choose some cozy favourites off the shelf. These will still make great gifts for the horror love in town, for sure! My current horror reads • And one book to avoid!
Happy December! There has been a lot of reading going on here as I've overlapped so many books the past month, and have just gotten around to finishing and reviewing some. Books I recently read The Keeper of the Key by Nicole Willson - https://wp.me/p85rtJ-1ih Gone to see the River Man by Kristopher Triana - https://nightface.ca/triana-river-man/ The Ghost Eaters by Clay Chapman - link to come Books I want You Can't Take It With You by Marcus Hawke Bellevue by Robin Cook Wake up and Open Your Eyes by Clay McLeod Chapman Strange Stones - Edward Lee and M Sangiovanni Books I will avoid Witchcraft for Wayward Girls by Grady Hendrix (just for now - curous to hear about it though!) The Book - I can't bring myself to link to it but will link to a four-year-old reddit thread that is still active because this is how long this questionable publication has been sliding into your algo https://www.reddit.com/r/rational/comments/kbqtyt/kickstarter_the_book_the_ultimate_guide_to/ Interested in supporting the show? Dark Gifts on a Dark Day • My Horror Birthday Haul!
Some amazing books were gifted to me or picked up while thrifting for my 49th birthday. My wonderful husband knows my tastes better than I do! Here we find some Bradbury, Brom, Ballingrud, Ballen, and more! We talk about the Stephen King series The Dark Tower, where I was slowly collecting the old Plume editions—and have now completed that. I suppose I’ll have to find the Scribner ones to finish it off next. The biggest change is a new camera! I'll be experimenting with this for a while, but so far, it looks great! Thank you, Chris, for this! Birthdays are odd for me, being so close to Christmas. Many late-December Sagittarians may commiserate—how do you separate the holidays and your day? I often wish I could celebrate in January, but then, why not May? How about October! I’m very lucky to spend birthdays—now that I’m older—reading and relaxing, with a fine meal as a highlight. Then, more books! Horror Galore! • dReadCon Literary Festival 2024
Last weekend I was at dDread Con Literary Festival in Waterloo and - wow - was it an amazing time. 50 horror authors, some great panels and hundreds of books to be had! *** Today at 1 p.m. EDT I will be at Cliff's Dark Gems! • Join the wonderful Lydia from @typica... & Pray Lied Eve 1, 2, and 3 are free on Kindle! https://www.amazon.com/author/lydia *** This is truly the first event of its kind in Canada - and if you are familiar with Shock Stock or maybe even the dealers room at a large horror authors convention, it is like that for just books. Treasure Trove: Thrift Store Discoveries & This Week's Reads
There is a thrift store near me - the one I went to literally only 'look' at books during my book buying ban, no less. Now, since I can shop there once again, I try to stop in every month or two. I'm truly looking for one elusive book I want to find in the wild, but always find something interesting instead... ✮✮✮✮✮✮ ▹ Bookworm decor is here! https://shop.typicalbooks.com/ ▹ All socials, the shop and news: https://linktr.ee/LydiaPeever ▹ Read books I wrote: https://amzn.to/3k20OY6 ▹ A list of horror books out each month: https://typicalbooks.com/newhorror ▹ Bookshop: https://bookshop.org/shop/typicalbooks to shop local! ▹ Music by ænorex: https://aenorex.com As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases when you use Amazon links here. Heads Will Roll • Summer Camp Horror Book Review
Heads Will Roll lives up to the cover and I enjoyed this quite a bit. It's skews a little young though not quite YA, but maybe not as brutal as I had hoped. Heads Will Roll by Josh Winning 2024, G.P. Putnam's Sons, Penguin https://amzn.to/3YY6Lre Cover design by Vi-An Nguyen I think every time I read a camp slasher I go back to Friday the 13th or Sleepaway Camp as far as film goes and in books you know... I really only have Con Season by Adam Caesar to equate this to. If you know of any other campground in the cabins pine needle strewn pathway camp slashers that live up to those, let me know. I've also likened it as well to Supermassive games like The Quarry so I highly recommend that if you haven't played it yet or if you did enjoy it, definitely check out Heads Will Roll.
