Marc A. Pullen - Decipher - 8 - All For Nothing
------------------------------------------ Story: ------------------------------------------ 1. Awaken You wake up, very cold, staring straight up at the cloudless sky. Fingers and toes are numb and won't move, can't feel anything. Head hurts, like you were struck by something. You aren't wearing boots or gloves. 2. Struggle As you open your eyes, you see you are partially covered in fresh snow and tree debris. You struggle to get your blood pumping and can feel your limbs regaining feeling and movement. 3. Observe You manage to get on your feet and see nothing but snow covered mountains all around. The trees are all bare. There's blood on the snow where your head was resting. You feel your head, but your fingers are still numb. But you can see blood on your hand from where you touched your head. Something gave you a good crack on the back of your skull. 4. Regroup Scanning the area, no direction looks safe or has any evidence of civilization. No footprints - human or animal, no roads, no signs, nothing. You turn around to see a small cave entrance that was behind you. You enter the cave and inside it opens up to a large cavern. You can see a backpack and a makeshift campfire that has burned itself out. Did you go outside to look for firewood? 5. Discovery In a dark corner of the cavern, you see something that doesn't fit. It's a skeleton of a man who died here, long ago. He has similar clothing as you, but has mostly faded away over the years. He has a briefcase with a handcuff attached to his left arm. You grab a stone next to you and smash the hand, and remove the briefcase. It's heavy and made of metal, but the lock mechanism looks fairly simple. Using some of the bone shards, you pick the lock of the briefcase and open it, but it's too dark to see what's inside. The sun has already set outside. Time to make a fire. 6. Purpose You find your wet and partially frozen boots and gloves near the burned out campfire, and remember that's why you headed outside. You carefully exit the cave entrance and feel around for fallen tree limbs and twigs, collect as much as you can find nearby. You also find some cloth buried beneath the snow, and find it's a parachute. Is that how you got here? Or was it from the old timer inside the cave? Your head hurts worse now. You start a small fire inside the cave with some matches in your pocket and start thawing out your boots and gloves, and warm yourself up. 7. The Answer To Everything You take a lit branch from the campfire over to the skeleton and see markings on his uniform that indicate he was some kind of US Special Ops personnel, probably from the mid-1900's. How did he end up here? You turn to the unlocked briefcase, slowly open it, and bring the lit branch near. You can't understand what you are seeing, it makes no sense. As you bring the heat of the lit branch closer, the heat seems to make the contents shimmer, as if it's both here and somewhere else. You touch the object in the briefcase and suddenly you understand everything, then you pass out. 8. All For Nothing You awaken when the sun shines into the cave and crosses your face. In your excitement, you forget to put on your boots and gloves, grab the briefcase, and hastily move to the cave entrance. As you breach the entrance, you slip on the snow and ice, bumping the side of the entrance, knocking loose some large stones above. The stones fall and hit you on the top of your head, knocking you to the ground. You pass out after seeing a pool of blood running into the snow around you. The knowledge you gained is now lost as you fade away and freeze to death.
