Glad to have you listening with us today! I've been interested in reading the Harvard Classics, and plan to share a few stories from each volume as I go. This is Volume one, containing multiple ancient philosophies, and here we will focus on one in particular. Today I will read you a bit of the classic writing that is actually pretty interesting and fun to read. This is The Apology of Socrates, written by his student Plato. Socrates was a great philosopher, who very much annoyed everyone. Everyone except his students at least. The Apology, is an apology in the classical sense meaning a defense of, so this is Socrates defending himself in the Athenian court of Law, with his life on the line. Welcome back to another of our Staff Selects! Today I read a bit about one of my favorite poets. I was introduced to Poe in school, like alot of people, but have sense been fascinated by poetry and how it is written. The book I am reading from is "Poe: Essays and Reviews" which is a book published under the Libraries of America with a collection of Poe's writing gathered by G.R. Thompson. I like the idea of eventually reading a few poems here on the channel so I thought it fitting to begin with Poe's thoughts on the composition of poetry. It's a very wordy breakdown, but I enjoyed it and felt some of you might also. Last weeks Part 1 was about the composition and theory of poetry, and this weeks Part 2 will be where Poe dissects the Raven and explains his thought process that led to the legendary poem. Welcome back to another of our Staff Selects! Today I read a bit about one of my favorite poets. I was introduced to Poe in school, like alot of people, but have sense been fascinated by poetry and how it is written. The book I am reading from is "Poe: Essays and Reviews" which is a book published under the Libraries of America with a collection of Poe's writing gathered by G.R. Thompson. I like the idea of eventually reading a few poems here on the channel so I thought it fitting to begin with Poe's thoughts on the composition of poetry. It's a very wordy breakdown, but I enjoyed it and felt some of you might also. This weeks Part 1 will be about the composition and theory of poetry, and next weeks Part 2 will be where Poe dissects the Raven and explains his thought process that led to the legendary poem.
