I meet Michael Davy in the mainlodge of Sungani Lodge. We do overlook the beautiful Sungani lagoon where wildlife come and go during our armchair podcast safari. We are in the very remote most southern part of the South Luangwa National Park. Here the Davy family started 5 years ago a bold dream to open up their two camps, Sungani Lodge and Kulandila Camp. Paul, Michael's Father and Michael himself arrived in 2019 at an old safaricamp ruin. They decided this must be the place to built Sungani. The name Sungani means keeper or custodian and this is what they had in mind. In deze aflevering reizen we af van Breukelen naar de ruige bush van het Hwange NP in Zimbabwe.  Zo zitten Hans en Martina in April nog in het zeer natte Nederland en zo staan zij tijdens hun eerste safaritocht bij een groep leeuwen met hun 'kill in het warme Hwange NP. Ik kan me een slechter begin voorstellen. De dagen die hier op volgen zijn al niet veel minder. Jagende Cheetah broers op wildebeesten, leeuwen op jacht naar hun dagelijkse maaltijd, olifanten in overvloed en natuurlijk een bezoek aan het bijzondere neushoorn project wat door de lokale Ngamo community wordt gerund in samenwerking met Imvelo Lodges & Camps.Reizen in het groene seizoen kent vele voordelen zoals een fors lagere prijs. Maar het kent ook risico's zoals een geheel ondergelopen deel van het park door hevige regenval. Hierdoor dienen reizigers soms flexibel te zijn wanneer een reisschema noodgedwongen moet worden aangepast.Luister naar de verhalen en ervaringen van mijn dorpsgenoten Hans en Martina Bierhuis die het wel zagen zitten om eens te gaan reizen tijdens het Afrikaanse groene seizoen. Whats on top of the hill or beyond? One of our great character safari guides, Peter Allison (Natural Selection) is taking us back to the mid ninetees in Africa. 18 years old, Peter was flipping a coin to decide where to explore first. Africa it was and so he went! His first guiding steps were in the Sabi Sands but the Okavango Delta in Botswana became the real deal for him. Deep down in the African Bush of the Zambezi region (Caprivi) we can find the untouch world of the Babwata National Park. Wat doe je met 2000 neushoorns die op een Zuid Afrikaanse neushoornboerderij zijn opgegroeid en de kosten te hoog zijn geworden om het project in leven te houden?Gelukkig was daar in 2023 African Parks Network die het beheer en zorg voor alle 2000 neushoorns op zich heeft genomen met de belofte deze dieren in de komende tien weer terug uit te zetten en verder te beschermen. African Parks is een non-profitorganisatie voor natuurbehoud die de verantwoordelijkheid op zich neemt voor het herstel en het langdurig beheer van nationale parken, in samenwerking met bedrijven en lokale brandstoffen. African Parks beheert 22 nationale parken en beschermde gebieden in 12 landen met een oppervlakte van ruim 20 miljoen hectare.En hoe kun je met nog maar 2 levende noordelijke witte neushoorns de soort behouden voor de toekomst?
